How are your ferns doing in these self watering pots now a year later? I just got a maidenhair and I have these pots in my Amazon cart waiting to hear back from you!
When I bought my maidenhair I immediately transferred it to a self-watering pot. That was 35 years ago. Still in the same pot. I do put it in fresh potting mix every few years and don’t think I could kill it if I tried.
@@felicia8330 Maidenhair s don’t mind being root bound. However when I change the potting mix I halve the plant if I think it is getting too crowded. I then put one half into a new self watering pot (same size) which I give away as a gift.
Wow wow wow, I've never heard of a 35 yr old mhf. At the same time, my 3 mhf's are in self watering and doing amazing, first time I've never accidentally killed them quickly!
Thank you! It is currently struggling since I didn't water it! But it's bouncing back!! Love the self watering pot - they just don't water themselves! 🤪
Many years ago, I had trouble keeping maidenhair ferns alive. Now, I have 6 of them and they're doing well. I keep them indoors next to a north-facing window. They are on a wick watering system. I make sure to check them regularly so that they never run out of water. I mist them occasionally.
Such a good video! Would love an update on how this worked out-I've been trying to work up the courage to try a maidenhair fern and this may have been the push I needed haha
I saved a grape ivy by using a self-watering pot. Ferns do well, too. I have let some pots dry out some before adding more water. I’m thinking of planting micans in one.
LOVE self watering pots for "difficult" plants. For me, anyway LOL I put my variegated ficus in one and no more leaf drop! I just got a maiden hair fern and she is already giving me trouble so she's going in one!!
pebbles at the bottom of my tray is what i do, so far so good, and no i dont water every day they would rot, but i do spray it, and keep the pebble tray half full, for moisture
I just got a Maidenhair about 2 weeks ago and I’m literally scared of her... I’m so glad I watched your video, I will be ordering their pot to keep her “Happy”!
Sled-watering pots have changed my entire “fern life” - many examples, but my crocodile fern is a wonder! Always an “insta-kill” for me in the past. The problem: my heart leaf fern was also doing beautifully in a self-watering pot (African Violet style - pot in pot) … until about a month ago. Suddenly, fronds/leaves are drying up & browning. Enough lost foliage that we’re near critical at this point. Fwiw, the soil is a mix of Coast of Maine organic potting mix, perlite, charcoal & orchid mix for drainage. I’ve treated with organic insect spray as well as neem oil topically, and as with most of my plants, it’s also treated with systemic granules for pest control (Bonide). The soil does seem wetter than usual at the moment, so I’ve pulled the inner pot from the reservoir and am giving it a chance to breathe, in case that helps. Any other ideas/suggestions, heart fern & self-watering pot pros out there? Thanks in advance
Over time those clay pot in pot things stop working. The pours in the clay gets filled with minerals from the water and fertilizer and it stops wicking water.
I’ve had my maiden hair fern living for almost an entire year. Not as lush as when I purchased her but alive and happy. I’ve kept her inside a cash-po in the original she came with. I fill the cash-po with distilled water and keep it like that filled only about an inch in water. And when the water evaporates (usually like 3-4 days) I fill it up again. I have her on a west facing window-direct sunlight and she’s happy. Give it a try. I promise it’ll work. Just don’t let the water dry out
You know if you "kill" a maiden hair you can revive it by cutting off all the dead leaves, watering and feeding it and leaving it in a light spot. In 2 weeks it will be back with beautiful fresh growth.
I keep mine rope watering, which is pretty much the same as wick watering but with a rope. I actually water my African violets the same way. Hi, I am new to your channel. I just started my plant channel. My name is Mya.🤓
I use african violet soil plus vermiculite for my maidenhair, repotting 1-2 times a year. Using 5 ropes in the self watering pot, after 1year it is now 14 ins tall and 24 ins wide! I sometimes use soft water from my aquarium to water💚🪴
Is it possible to put too many wicks in a self-watering maidenhair fern? I have mine in a Lechuza pot, but when I put in the wick, it was on one side only, and I didn't want it only to draw up water on one side.
I am so happy I found out about them. I have my rabbit foot fern, bird nest fern, grape ivy, oxalis, German ivy, multiflora hoya, nerve plant and Swedish ivy in self watering pots (the ceramic two piece type). I tell you, I was having a devil of a time with the Swedish ivy. It was loosing leaves, was always dry and crispy. Now it is lush and growing strong. It is now one of my favorite plants period. Am thinking about using them for my wandering jewel, zebrina. What do you think? I think I will let these reservoir dry out now that fall and winter are here though. Would you agree?🤔
J m so far, so good! It’s been about three weeks, I guess, so too soon to tell if all is well, but the yellowing on the leaves did stop, and it’s looking favorable. I’ve only filled the reservoir once, but again, it’s not in a very bright place so not a lot of photosynthesis taking place!
Savannah Orozco basically, they would ideally love warm, wet, bright conditions. So if you have a self watering pot, that will help with the wet. Bright indirect light is going to be best. I have mine in low light. It’s SURVIVING but it’ll thrive in more bright conditions.
Hi! Being home over the last year has helped me not completely kill them. I love my maidenhairs. Even so, I have two that are recovering from letting them dry out. We may be traveling in the next year as things open up. How do I help them stay alive if we're gone for a few weeks?
I use a self erring for my rabbit’s foot fern! I have killed a few and finally thought omg I can do hydroponics with cocopeat :) I used the same brand as you and they told me I could mix it with regular mixed soil if needed (since the cocopeat has no nutrients and if not added fertilizer the plant would die :/). It’s been amazing. I got the Blue at fern, and I’m gonna report it in semi hydroponic soon.
@@rosettagrows3315 Please tell more; how do you dilute it, and how often do one fill the thank with fertilizer? I've got several Peace lilies in self watering pots, and to no surprise they're doing great. A bit more surprising the Monstera Deliciosa is thriving in self watering as well 👍 Neither of them are fertilized since april, when they were repotted. It's about time I learn how to, so please do tell 🙋♀️
I just got a heart leaf fern this weekend and I just order the self watering pot from Amazon. My question is how will I fertilize my fern since you dont need to water from the top?
I have these other water indicators that turn blue when they are good and white when they need water.. it DEFINITELY helped me be a plant mom😂 But with that said putting the water on top I was getting gnats so I switched 2 plants to these last night. I really want to stop the gnat problem
Oh man. I hear you on the gnats. I don't have that issue with mine in the self watering pots. But it can still happen in moist soil. I hope it doesn't for you! Let me know if you need more help!
I have fancy goldfish and have to change the water etc regularly and my ferns love the water. If your maidenhair dries up do not toss it it will grow back.
Sorry - just seeing this - Yes, I imagine you could! I don't have any experience (or any GOOD experience) with leca so I can't really speak to that. Have you tried it?
These pots are great and look neat. However you can achieve the same by simply wicking your plant pot to a water container below it, which allows for your choice of water reservoir size
🥺 I’ve killed 3 I even put one in an enclosed terrarium & open terrarium 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ oh have you been to Mickey’s in WeHo? 🥰💚🌿 I’m missing that place. I saw some heart ferns there last year. That’s a cool pot!
iddybiddyladybug Leeza I miss mickeys too!! It’s been so long! I’m hoping that the self watering is going to fix all my humidity problems! 🤷🏻♀️ We will see!
Hi! Thanks for asking! Its is doing fine. Here's the truth: I have forgotten to fill the reservoir a couple of times and so it is alive and has a couple new leaves but it isn't as amazing as I would hope. They really hate to dry out and I've done it twice. 😬
Wish someone told me at the store. I told them i kill all plants and they said this plant was easy to care for but mine started drying out 2 weeks after i got it 😩
You've only killed 5! LOl You've got nothing on me. I just add them to the shopping list every other month! How do you keep them alive if they are in a mixed planter with an orchid?
Lol. Oh no! I would remove them from the orchid. I usually keep plants that have similar growing needs together - but orchids have different care, for sure.
This model is too many issues, find one of better quality. Especially the water meter is unreliable, it can get stuck, giving you the impression that it still has enough water.
Are you using self watering pots? What are you growing?
Rosetta Grows nope some have saucers lol

Self watering pots seem so useful - I tend to either over or under water my plants! Will have to look into them 🙂
Steph & Den they work well for plants that like lots of water!
