    I used to ride this line from Harvard to Chicago every summer I visited my grandparents and it drove me crazy how many stops there were, especially after Barrington

      If the amount of stations drive you crazy, then the BNSF line is your sworn enemy. On that line, every stop is like a half mile from each other up until Downers Grove.

      Yet still a quiet zone due to there being just enough Karens who belong in Lake County existing there.

    I remember this line. As a kid living in Des Plaines, my father took this train line from Cumberland Road back when Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. As an adult working in Cary IL, across the street from the office I worked at is the Cary Metra Station. After work early Saturday afternoon, took the train to Chicago

    I used to ride this train route 5 times a week during 2000 to the loop. I'm now retired in Maui and just purchased a Kato version of this train. I was hoping to capture train announcements for my layout.

    I wish they'd put the station names on screen so hearing impaired could see them. Most other train videos do this.

    First crossing right off the bat provided the public with about 7 seconds of warning time before occupying the crossing. Exactly what rule book is this train operating off of? Think the FRA needs to pay a visit to that crossing.

    • @massbytrainmpw
      @massbytrainmpw 2 роки тому

      It's definitely set up so that the crossing doesn't go down while trains are loading/unloading here (being a terminus, trains will often dwell at the platform for an extended period of time). But yeah, the engineer should have a way to lower the gates BEFORE they start moving the train. Alternatively they should have a flag person here manually operating the gates/signals.

  • @bdubnyc

    Great video! Anyone know why the train passed the red block signal at 47:35? I am just guessing that is a block signal by the way it looks. Is it possible the engineer is going by cab signals and ignoring the block signal?

    • @garysprandel1817
      @garysprandel1817 Рік тому +1

      Going to assume some sort of issue with the signal as that's the distant signal for the Barrington interlocking. Going by the extremely reduced speed between there and clearing the plant limits and then accelerating to a more normal speed despite the closeness to the Barrington depot I'm assuming the engineer got the ok to pass the red from dispatch.

      It's a weekend day, when a single ticket is good for the whole weekend. (Update in 2021: ...or a single weekend day.) Overheard it from the conductor as he was collecting tickets leaving Harvard. There's also a good deal for families, so hence you hear more children's voices. Makes for a nice family trip into downtown Chicago.

      Harvard, Illinois, the first station on this trip, has had a significant Hispanic population for at least 20 years. It's a weekend ride into Chicago with family-friendly fares. First-generation kids talking with their parents in the language of their parents is as ordinary is it gets.
