    **Thank you for watching! We really like this apartment and find it to be suitable for our needs right now as we are travelling so much. It’s the perfect lock and leave apartment as it’s secure and the bikes are safe in the gated area with CC TV downstairs. We might move to a bigger place in future, but we will wait for the 100% perfect apartment/villa/house to come along!
    **Just for a laugh, I’ve pre-prepared some negative comments so those who are feeling negative don’t have to go to the trouble of writing their own. Just comment the corresponding number from the list below! It has never been easier to flaunt your superiority and/or negativity! 😂😂😂
    1. “You’re wasting money. You can rent an apartment for $50.” 😀
    2. “You’re paying way too much/You’re being ripped off. I have seen much better apartments for $XX (insert stupidly low amount).” 😀
    3. “You’re so tight/cheap/stingy. You should be paying way more and not living so cheaply.” 😀
    4. “You’re taking housing stock away from Khmers,” or, “You expats are driving the prices up for locals.” I had a variation of this one recently. There is so much housing stock in Siem Reap that these are ridiculous statements. 😀
    5. “I pay $XX (insert stupidly low amount) a month for electricity. You are stupid/soft/clueless/being ripped off.” 😀
    Please take this in the fun spirit it was intended. We've done a fair few of these apartment tours in our time, and the negative comments always seem to be the same!

    I'm a recently retired single man who I lost my wife 10 years ago.
    I recently discovered your channel and I'm glad I did..
    I am seriously tired of the political unrest and division going on in the USA and will be visiting Cambodia, and now Seim Reap, soon in hopes of retiring there and living out my life in peace.
    I appreciate your time in doing those and the good works you're doing..

      There is certainly good value to be had in Siem Reap. Some of the landlords are still being a little unrealistic with their prices, particularly when brand new apartments in brand new buildings are coming onto the market all the time. Yes, it's good value compared to many we have seen. We paid a month deposit and a month in advance on moving in. That's standard, although some places try for a 2 month deposit. I wouldn't stay in a place that wanted 2 months. I'm ok with the stains but they bothered me the first week or two. Thanks for watching!

    Comfortable, modern apt, and lovely video! Well done.
    Just a small suggestion: at 0:26 you mention your electricity charge per kilowat hr (maybe that's interesting to fellow Aussies or Kiwis?), but it was only at the video's end that you said you pay about $ 60 / mth for electricity.
    So, a summary:
    Apt rent: $ 175
    Electricity 60
    Water ($3-4) 4
    WiFi (good!) 0
    TOTAL $ 239

    Your apartment looks absolutely perfect for my needs, but I don't find any note of what apartment complex (or location) this is in Siem Reap? It'd be helpful to know the name of the housing, or have a realtor or landlord contact, if you wouldn't mind providing this. TIA!

      @ForRiel  6 місяців тому

      Thanks Sharon! We didn't share the location because we were still living there when the video was published, and it's a bit weird having people know where we live. We've moved now, so happy to share. I can't remember which agent showed it to us, though. maps.app.goo.gl/zB3MDsZqx9DUBmtX7

      No, we moved into a villa nearly a month ago. It's our first time in a stand-alone place, but we are loving it.

    How is the contract set up, if there is any? Minimum period of time, open end or fixed period? Do they take a deposit?

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  11 місяців тому

      Yes, there is a contract that contains the details and passport numbers, etc. Standard is a one month deposit and the first month in advance,so effectively you need 2 months' rent to move in.

    Thanks for the information, you are really doing a good job. Am curious, what medical checks are there in Cambodia when processing a work permit? That's if there is.

      I had one once. They did height, weight, lung check, blood pressure, then a bit of a poke around the abdominals. Thanks so much for watching.

    That’s awesum.. it looks really great .. soo cheap 👍.. there wouldn’t be many if any that would come under the monthly rental you scored here especially with location and everything it has come with well done .. the bed comment was a Lol .. but so true 😂

      @ForRiel  Рік тому

      Thanks so much - it's a real bargain given everything it contains. We lock up and leave a lot and it's perfect for that scenario. Yeah, the bed.... someone chose it from all of the available beds! 😂😂😂

    Are these places secure to use as a home base and not be there all the time? I mean be away a month or two at a time?

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  Рік тому +1

      Yes, that is exactly what we have been doing. Our electronics and our passports are our most valuable possessions, and those are always with us when we travel, so we have no concerns at all about locking and leaving. And that's not to say that we are in any way fearful of being robbed. It's very safe here.

    Another enjoyable video for my Sunday morning coffee. Thanks again Claire! I am curious how you pay your bills? Is it online, phone or do you receive a paper bill somehow and have to pay it at some location?

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  Рік тому +2

      There is a single bill for water and another for electricity that cover the whole building. Every month, when the rent is due, we take a photo of the two metres, work out the cost, then pay the total amount to the landlord via ABA transfer. The metres are individual. We send her the metre photos as well.

    Thanks fore sharing your perspective Claire.
    Siem Reap is on my
    short list of places to investigate further.
    What is the tempurature at night in July, 95 degrees?
    What is the crime rate?
    Are Digital Nomads from America viewed positively?
    Do you need to speak the local language to get by for 8 weeks?

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  6 місяців тому

      Thanks so much for watching! Glad you found it useful. I am not sure of the temps exactly, but in July it is wet season, and probably around 25 (c) at night. Cambodia generally, and Siem Reap specifically, are very laid back places. Locals are curious about what you might be doing in terms of working, but that's about as far as it goes. There is no judgement that I have experienced. I made a video about safety in Cambodia if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/XhSdTuDBA-k/v-deo.html

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  6 місяців тому

      I don't know that it has a name, and we didn't include the location when we made this video because we were still living there. If you google Smiley Guesthouse, it's two doors down from there.
