Where to live in Siem Reap, Cambodia? Ultimate expat guide for 2023!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- This video will show you everything you need to know about Siem Reap’s different areas. If you are considering a move either from outside Cambodia or from another place in Cambodia, I hope this guide will be helpful. I explore the four sangkats or communes closest to Siem Reap’s city centre and take a look at what each one has to offer in terms of daily essentials like markets, supermarkets, and gyms. Then we go for a little ride around each area and check them out! See what they’re really like on the ground! Which is cheapest? Which has the most expats? Which is the greenest? Which has the best range of restaurants and bars? It’s all here!

Thanks so much for watching; I hope you found the information in this video useful - apologies again for my pronunciation, particularly of Sala Kamraeuk - I can't seem to get my head around that one no matter how many times I ask locals how to say it and then repeat it back to them. Where would you choose to live? We have lived in Svay Dangkum and Sala Kamraeuk, three apartments in each location. I'd like to try Slor Kram next, maybe after our current lease finishes. Tour of our current apartment coming soon-ish. Check out Julia Haw's channel if you haven't already: www.youtube.com/@juliahaw
Svay Dangkum I think , I will be there in July and make a choice as to my retirement home
Are you doing a year-long lease each time?
Great video. Very very informative. Just the facts. No BS. No self-indulgent meanderings like in so many other people's videos. Keep it up.
Thanks so much! We try to keep it quick and relevant :)
My wife and I spent 5 months there, stuck during the height of COVID in 2020. We were house sitting for an Australian man in Sala Kamraeuk. It was such a surreal time to be there, we were some of the very few foreigners in town, and so many businesses were closed. We visited Angkor Wat and for two days we wandered the temples completely alone, not a soul in sight. Truly magical.
That happened to us as well, except we kinda chose to be stuck 😅
During this time we fell in love with Cambodia 🇰🇭
I think that the quietest out of the way place, would be the best place to live for me. I don't need flashy or a lot of convenience. Peace and quiet is what I need, even if means dirt roads and narrow lane ways I don't care.
You might be best to explore some of the other Sangkats beyond the four in the city centre. Maybe one of the villages in Sra Ngae?
@@ForRiel thank you for your reply.
@@ForRielso in your opinion there is no quiet place to live .you have to go no A/C VILLAGE AND DIE. Even you can't explain QUIET PLACE DO YOU UNDERSTAND LITTLE BIT THE IMPORTANCE OF QUIET? IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FROM ALL YOU EXPLAIN BLA BLA
Thanks so much for this Informative locations INFOS. Great job dear friend! 😳🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💪💪💪👍👍👍👍👍🥰🥰🥰
So pleased you found it helpful! 🙏🎉🇰🇭🐘🍍🎉🇰🇭
Very interesting and informative. Could you please do some videos on some of the various apartments, restaurants, supermarkets and shopping centers in the various areas. Thanks😀
Thanks so much! I will be making more videos about the different areas, but in the meantime, check out this video I made about the restaurants on Taphul Road in Svay Dangkum: ua-cam.com/video/aHZVRWzsx44/v-deo.html
@@ForRiel It would be great to see a dedicated video of Svay Dangkum area and another video on Sala Kamreuk area.
Thank you
I enjoy your videos very much
Thanks 🙏 you very much for sharing
Thanks so much for taking the time to let us know. 😊🙏👍
Great video! Been living in Bangkok for many years and Siem riep is on my list of possible places to live. Thanks
That's great. I'd love to live in Bangkok, but the visa seems to be too difficult there. Siem Reap is a really good place to live, but you might find it very quiet after Bangkok.
Very informative. Many Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Impressive work… thorough and very useful information. Thanks very much for your hard work.
Thank you so much for watching - much appreciated!
What about the Rolls-Royce that went past at 12.04. Not what you would expect in Cambodia! Great video, very informative. Thanks.
There's a hotel in town that has a couple of Rolls. They use them to pick up guests from the airport, etc. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic job putting this video together. Super helpful info. Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching - glad it was useful! 🙂🙏🛵🍭🍭🍭
The improved roads are also less dusty. White shirts no longer turn orange.
I agree, it's just so much better now.
better buy orange shirts then! 🤷🏻🤣🇰🇭
We’re is the best area for quiet living and affordability do you suggest 😊
Affordability is pretty well the same across Siem Reap. Quietness is very dependent on what's close by, and you can only discover this by going to the place. Having said that, we really like being near the river in Slor Kram.
Always something to learn about Siem reap
There's a lot to uncover for such a relatively small place! 🙂🙏🛵🍭🍭🍭
Another really informative and interesting video. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching! 🙂🙏🛵🍭🍭🍭
Thank you. Well thought out and informative. Where is Angkor Wat? Is it near any of these areas.
Thanks for watching. Angkor Wat is about 5km from the centre of town along the road that divides Slor Kram and Kouk Chak. goo.gl/maps/nvfCYQc5yHdH93CE6
Good one! 👍🇰🇭
Thank you, glad it was useful.
Another very helpful vid. Thank you for including gyms. Helps me to balance out the cheap beers 🙏🏻😊
The gyms are amazing value here. No need to worry about trying to find an apartment with one. Thank you forcwatching.
Really like your presentations - I have a rather niche question that maybe you would want to look at. I’m a swimmer ( like serious😊) would you be able to do a survey of which resorts with great pools for lap swimming ( 25m +) allow drop in swimming? Thanks!
A new sports club called Royal sports Club has just open up.
Hello, I’ve followed your channel with great interest for quite some time in preparation for a long-term move to Cambodia. Life has thrown a couple of curveballs at me and I have to make some changes to my plans. I’ve been travelling for over a year by bicycle and now I have some damage to my bicycle that cannot be repaired in Laos. Another issue is that my less-than-a-year-old iPad Pro has gone belly up on me. The screen is black and stays black. The bicycle mechanic in the told me that ordering parts from Europe or North America were virtually impossible because the government carefully scrutinizes every piece of packaging that comes into the country. Apple computer will not under any condition do repairs that originate from Laos. Apple has a send-in policy where I would send my computer to them. They would fix it and send it back to me, but in this case they will not accept anything sent from Laos nor will they ship anything to Laos. This has left me in a real predicament; no bicycle no computer, but there is a silver lining to all of this bs. Cambodia was my choice destination where I was planning on spending a good deal of time editing and just enjoying cycling the country. It’s just been pushed forward a little not a big problem. Here comes the “Can you do me a favour.” question. I’m arriving in Siem Reap on 26 September this month and I’m just wondering if by chance you might know of a studio or a one bedroom apartment in your area that might be available. I am a Canadian, non-smoker non-drinker, quiet guy and I just want to get my work done and get my bicycle fixed, I would like to get a three month lease, extendible if possible. I know you’re busy with your own life and your page on UA-cam, but I just thought by chance you may have just heard of something that might suit me. ff you can make any suggestions, I would be happy to follow them, thank you very much John Montpetit
Hi John, do you know about Triple Cats Cycle in Chiang Mai? A friend of ours had his touring bike built there and was very happy with their work. We're around in Siem Reap and can help you find a place when you arrive. There are so many apartments to choose from, and most are happy to accept a shorter than 6 month lease for a slightly higher monthly rent. Honestly there are at least 100 vacant places for every person looking, so it won't be a problem. Can you email ( visible on the desktop version of YT) us or message us on Instagram or Facebook? YT does not like links and often they cause the comment to disappear.
I'm hoping to move there in the future so this is really helpful. Thank you. :)
Best of luck! 🙂🙏🎉
Thank you for the information. I live in México now but plan on moving to Cambodia. Could you please give your opinión the best área to live. I didn't have a penny ready. Don't worry l understand it's only your openion. I would like to get an idea of what housing looks like. Again thank you and l would welcome any information and advice you could give. God bless
The best idea is to come and look around for a week or two and get a feel for the areas. Plus join Cheap Rentals Siem Reap group on Facebook.
Nice video and very informative... Thanks a lot for you time and work on these video, i would go to Svay Dangkum, and i am planning a vacation for the end of 24 hopefully things will be done by then so i can go. but i will look at more of your video for sure to learn more.
There are many good areas in SR so would focus on the apartment then the area. Most places are only a 10 min maximum Tuktuk ride.
Another great video. My gut feeling is Kouk Chak, as I grew up in Singapore up from 6 to 12 and we were one of 3 white families in the street.
Oh wow! That is an interesting story 😃 must have been a different upbringing.
Unluckywise I spent only 8 days in SR on my last trip. But I found the area around the chocolate garden (Sala Kamraeuk) very quite and peaceful. And a bit further it seems to be almost rural. What I don't know is how far the noise of pub street is spread at night. Due to my age I like to sleep at night🙃
Yes that area around Chocolate Garden is quite lovely. There are some very appealing pockets in Siem Reap, and it's fun to find them. I think Pub Street noise is quite well contained. Once you are a few streets away it isn't an issue. I find it far too loud there. 🙂🙏🛵🍭🍭🍭
Thanks for another great video. Really very enjoyable. So much useful information. I am from Canada, so I am hoping to retire somewhere with warmer weather. Thailand and Cambodia come to mine. I realize Cambodia is so much cheaper than Thailand. Are the prices that inexpensive in Phnom Penh as well? One problem I have with moving abroad is moving money to foreign bank accounts. How do handle the two factor authentication required for online banking ? Many thanks for your kind help. Ben
Hi Ben, yes the 2FA is a real pain. We ended up calling our bank and asking them to remove it, which they did. If I had my time again, I would look for a bank that uses an app for 2FA rather than sending a code via SMS. It just seems so backward when they could use a second party app, or even have it built into their own app like the wonderful ABA bank here does. Thanks for watching!
Very informative thanks. Cook chook 😂
Any time 😇
Really appreciate the candor and authentic feedback that you share.
Your videos have played a significant role in our planning a move to Siam Reap. We are emailing some international schools as well. Our boys are 5 and 7
Thanks again. I know there must be a lot of work behind these videos.
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are very happy that our videos have been helpful.
Seam Reap , is a great fit for me , except one thing, no beaches,
Only a short flight to Thailand from SR! 🏖
Understand that very well. But: if it is for swimming there is a great 50 m pool, Bluewater Park Bakhend Rd., where you can do your laps for one dollar. Of course no sand to walk....🙃
I'd go Sala Kamruk . I'm toying with the idea of Cambodia for retirement.
Thanks Dwayne from Port Macquarie Australia
Nice one, Dwayne. Come have a look for yourself if you can. 😊
@ForRiel I think I'll do two intrepid travel tours and that'll give me a month in the country. If I like what I see I'll come back solo and spend a month in SR getting a feel for it. Thank you.
Lots of questions
Which is the most leafy. Maria and Col.
I'd say Slor Kram. It's very nice near the river north of the highway.
Thanks for all that. Very practical information. I'm definitely hoping to pay a visit sometime early in 25, with an eye toward a possible move. Vancouver Canada where I live, has become very unaffordable for renters. Tho I have a fairly good deal where I currently live.
Question: Do you find everything to be within fairly easy walking distance in those 4 areas? Like, anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes by foot? I like to be able to walk from point A to point B.
If you want to be able to walk everywhere, I'd suggest Wat Bo, Wat Damnak (both in Sala Kamreuk) or Svay Dangkum. There are many, many apartments available in those areas. You will have no problem at all finding a suitable place.
@@ForRiel Thank you very much for that additional info.
Great video with a lot for us to learn!!! And GymTime is the go too, quit with all that you need :)
I've been meaning to check out GymTime! Bargain at that price, but Siem Reap Fit is closer for us. Thanks for watching, and love what you are doing out in the community! 💪
Claire, the current home you are in what was the main reason for that part of Siem Reap? Just wondering from one part to another in Siem Reap, what do you like being near the most, or any from?😊 Also, since you lived in a few places, how was the process of leaving the agreement with the owners/ landlords? Looking forward to more updates with visas, local life/culture for expats... when you can ☺️ 🛺
I think the longer you live here, the less being close to things matters. We both have motos and I can independently get myself wherever I want to be. If you are new to SR and mostly walking, then an area like Taphul with supermarkets and restaurants (the two things you need most often) is best. Now we live in Slor Kram and I like it here because it's quiet and green. WRT leaving apartments, sometimes we left before the term of the lease had ended, and in these instances, we forfeited the deposit. When we stayed the full duration of the lease, we never had an issue having our deposit returned. Landlords understand that people move around as their requirements change and they become more used to living here.
hello.did i speak to you about a month ago outside the supermarket on road 6.was you driving a green electric type golf car?. sorry if i have made a mistake.
Definitely not us in a green golf car! I ride a Click and Jeremy rides a PCX.
The first area looks roostery.
Yeah, you're never far from those guys.
Wow, you really did your research on that one 😊
I always thought that I lived in Sala Kamraeuk but i am on the West side of the river.
Learn something new everyday 🤗
Thank you for this video 😊
Yeah it took a bit of putting together - luckily no system crashes before I saved! Yeah, pretty sure you're in SD not SK, but perhaps the river road is included in SK.... Take care and see you soon!
Where is new airport sho that
I made this video before the new airport opened. In any case, I don't think many expats would want to live near it as it's quite a long way from town. Thanks for watching.
Great video - thank you so much for explaining the Sangkats, I had been trying to figure out apartment prices and areas of Siem Reap. Not ready to move yet, but planning for my retirement :o)
Our pleasure! 😀
Love your breakdowns
Thank you for watching!
One of your most useful videos. Watching it again. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful enough to watch it twice!
so informative! thank you for all the hard work you put into this video
Glad it was helpful! 🥰
Are there public restrooms in the city, market, or in general?
There are good facilities in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Generally in town you can use the facilities of any of the restaurants or cafes if you buy a drink. There are usually bathrooms in the markets, but they are often filthy.
Thank you for the information and effort you put into this video. Appreciated 😊

Is it safe to live in the area that has been shown in the maps
Apart from a few areas of town that get a bit dodgy late at night, I think it is very safe in those areas. Thanks for watching.
@@ForRiel Thank you very much
Hiya! I have seen in vlogs a long line-up of street food trucks along the riverside. Which side is that on, or both N and S of Road 6?
Also, is the main source of noise coming from the Pagodas chanting through a loudspeaker, like we heard for a funeral? (in Slor Kram)
Thanks!!
Food stalls spread out from the old market and also road 60 near the Angkor ticket centre.
Transliteration is NOT the same as Romanization. You are talking about Romanization. Let's be clear. Otherwise, a very helpful vid. Also, we can use romanization with either transcription or transliteration....if I am not mistaken.
Thanks so much!
What is the quality of overall city infrastructure and safety arrangements for electricity, plumbing, safe roads, garbage collection, etc.?
Plumbing can be questionable and therefore can be smelly, but we have good water supply that is very inexpensive. Much of the electricity is not earthed, and it's pretty common to get little zaps from appliances. Having said that, outages are becoming increasingly rare. Residents (and landlords) have to opt in for garbage collection, and it's a private service you have to pay for. If you're away from the town centre, the garbage collection company won't service you unless it is worth their while, i.e. several residents opt in.
Are there Ubers because we understood you don't need a car, but things are spread out. What do people do for online purchasing like Amazon?
Yes, there are rideshare apps: PassApp, Grab, and some others. You can choose a small tuktuk or a bigger remork. Online shopping has to be done through a third party. A little fiddly, but very possible.
Locals are starting to be priced out of the real estate market. We don’t want that to happen like Mexico and Khmer can’t run illegally to America like Mexican, Central American and South American.
I think if there is an issue, it's that apartment buildings are being built with foreign occupants in mind. I hope there will always be enough and a reasonable price for those who need them.
Thank you so much Claire! This came across my FB group feeds today! Perfect timing! We arrive 4Nov23 and will be searching for a long term let. Awesomely presented! 🙌
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching.

I love that area too.
Thanks for explaining the administrative levels. Good info for anywhere in Cambodia :)
I think the Sangkats are called Khans in Phnom Penh, but apart from that it's consistent all over the Kjngdom.
Impressive that you break them all down. Thank you
Glad it was helpful, and thank you so much for watching.
Looks a great place to Live, Australia is starting to get so expensive, the Political scene is NOT healthy. (alleged corruption is crazy). Do they let unvaxxed into Cambodia (i'm not a anti-vaxxer, was just cautious). great video and very informative.
There are no vaccination checks anymore, so it doesn't matter if you have had them or not. I was just talking to my parents about how much things are costing back in Aus. It's a real problem and I can't see how it's going to change anytime soon.
@ForRiel Thanks for that, if i come over i will get the J/E and D/F vax's. i never got C/Vid, took lots of D3, Zinc, K2 and honey fermented garlic plus don't laugh Tonic Water.
This is great stuff! I used to live on Street 20 near Wat Bo and loved it. I lived in the same apartment building as Dave from Dave Does Cambodia and he became a good friend. I can't wait to return to Siem Reap in June! Your channel is thorough and helpful!
We remember you! Is it Bill? Good to hear you're going to give it another go. 😊
@@ForRiel It is! Thank you! I'm doing it a bit wiser this time, and really looking forward to i!
I asked you about pools - just read down and someone mentioned blue water park. I just looked it up👍👍
Royal sports club
Really interesting. A good update on your video that you published a few years ago. A video dedicated to each of these locations might be of interest to viewers contemplating a move to SR or a move from one district to another. Hope the current heat is not too brutal for you.
I also would love seperate videos on each of these areas. Loved this video. I've watched the one you did a few years ago several times
I watched the video I made a few years back and was a little horrified about the shaky camera footage. Thought I'd better make a more respectable update! I think a video about each area would be a good idea - I can work on that but might take a little while. Thanks so much for watching.
Haha! I’m flooding your comment section. Sorry. Blue water only seems to be open sat and Sunday so back to my original request - lap pools at hotels or resorts for drop in please😁
There is a new sports club opened called Royal Sports Club which has a large swimming pool
👍👍thanks. It looks like it is exactly what I’m looking for
how about muskitos? can we buy local anti muskito cream?
Yeah, it's cheap and readily available. There's also mozzie coils and citronella candles.
Very helpful thanks...couple questions if you dont mind.
1. Do you use local currency or US dollars and are credit cards common to use or is there an extra fee applied.
2. Which part would be the most walkable froendly area to reach most things without the need of a motorbike?
Thanks :)
Hi, thanks for watching. We very rarely use cash but when we do, it's always Riel. For bigger items like rent and even groceries, we use ABA transfer. ABA is the leading local bank. We never use credit cards here.
I think for walkability Sala Kamraeuk and Svay Dangkum would be best. Specifically, in Sala K, Wat Bo and Wat Damnak would be best. Svay Dangkum is huge, so it would need to be in the section that is closer to the town centre. I hope that helps!
@@ForRiel Cool! Will check out those areas. My ATM fees are rebated so guess the easiest would be to access cash that way and then just deposit into an ABA acct to use for local purchases.
You've really made some great vids here. So informative and useful. Thanks for the IPS tip! I'll be in SR in 3 weeks.
Thanks Mitchell. IPS will look after you very well.
Hey, are there any language schools in SR worthy of note?
Hi Clare. You showed the ATM hub being built. Simple question. When you use an ATM does it give dollars? Thanks.
It will dispense Riel or USD depending on what you choose. Thanks for watching.
#1: Sala Kamreuk #2: Svay Dangkum for me.
Yes, we've always lived in those two areas. I'd like to try Slor Kram one day.
Very helpful. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Hi there, have been watching your videos all day now as we're coming to siem reap in November, one way ticket
Oh wow, that's fantastic. Have you been to Cambodia before?
@ForRiel I have not but my partner lived in cambodia and taught English a few years back and has been on at me to make the leap!
Can foreigners own land in Cambodia?
No, only apartments above ground floor.
Hello. Very informative as usual. On my two previous visits I have stayed in Chreav for the simple reason it is out of town.
I'm in PP at the moment and return to SR in two days, to again stay in Chreav while exploring other areas to reside permanently.
Thanks again.
Best regards.
Lynn.
Thank you so much. Yes, it's nice to get out of town and into the villages where life has a slower pace. How long are you going to stay in Siem Reap?
@@ForRiel Indefinitely. I'll apply for the R visa on Friday. I plan to use Siem Reap as a base to explore the remainder of the country. Hope all is good with you two. Cheers. Lynn
That's fantastic. Siem Reap is the perfect base. So easy to travel anywhere. We're in Singapore right now and Malaysia in June.
@@ForRiel Safe and exciting travels.
Are there any pool (billiards) rooms there?
Plenty of bars with a pool table!
Good info Maria and Col Thailand
Thank you!
So based on this it's a bit hard to guage. Probably one of the lower quadrants simply because the abundance of supermarkets are a good indicator of affluent / dynamic neighbourhoods. However I watched this many months after you posted and I watched your moto news of February 7th where you go around Road 30 I think. That's certainly an area I found attractive, the sort of townhouse vibe.
Don't know if I should bring thid up but I do notice in many of your videos you target a western audience or at least you refer to western and expat interchangeably. Don't know if that's completely unconscious or deliberate. It's actually a big world out there. Be careful of doing the white immigrant (sorry expatriate) thing of living in a foreigner bubble. No offense.
We do have a few Cambodian friends, but it's hard as we haven't learnt Khmer yet. After we return from Australia we are going to fully embrace Cambodia with language classes a lot of travel.
A very nice video. Pity for me that if I ever settled in Cambodia it would be in a coastal town so I can't use the information directly. But I continue to learn about the country by watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much! Kep and Kampot are both pretty tiny so the areas aren't such a big deal like they are in Siem Reap. All the best!
@@ForRielI sense Sihanoukville is not even worth considering anymore in your opinion?
We've never been, but going from the experience and advice of others, I'd say not. We're hoping to check it out for ourselves later this year.
@@ForRiel Thanks. Your assessment after the trip will make for another interesting video I'm sure.
Gold Fitness is a world class gym. Highly recommended.
It looks very fancy. I've never been in because of the price.
@@ForRiel It's only expensive if you pay daily. The promos they seem to have every holiday make long term membership very cheap - around $1 per day or less.
Sauna + steam room + a real freezing cold pool to jump in after, + very large swimming pool, + everything else you can imagine. Really fantastic and huge.
That sounds fantastic! We usually go 2 or 3 times a week to a local gym, but the annual deal seems good value for all of those facilities.
Interesting to watch as Siem Reap is always changing. Each time I go back there are new shops and ones that close down and move around. Enjoyed your video.
Yes, things move around so much in Siem Reap - business are always closing and popping up somewhere else. Thanks for watching. 🙂🙏🛵🍭🍭🍭

Certainly! 😁 Question: Regarding drainage, are stinky pipes (sewage smell) just part of life in Siam Reap? How about little critters like roaches? About the same as Thailand? Thanks! 🙏
Great video Claire , plenty of useful information , I too have lived in both Svay Dangkum & Sala Kamraeuk , love both areas , so easy to travel about Siem Reap , my only complaint presently , is the heat we have all been experiencing lately , looking forward to the rainy season , hope you and Jeremy are doing well , take care , catch you on the next one , Peace
It would be nice to have some rain and some reprieve from the heat. It must be really awful for the older people around town, but they seem to tolerate it so well. Glad you enjoyed the video - thank you for watching!

I gotta say - weddings and funerals are my least favourite part of Cambodia. Blocking road access (even dead-end roads so no one can get out), and obnoxious "music" and chanting being blasted at full volume at extremely early hours. Not sure why they have to be so loud. I get that weddings are festive and happy, and people may want to rest of the village to come and give money to the bride and groom, but why funerals? I often think about someone getting angry being woken up by chanting at 4AM, and then generating more corpses.
So I have been told is that music is very loud at funerals to scare away bad Ghosts 👻
Or just make people eat faster and leave 🙄
Really very informative excellent video congratulations Claire...‼️🤝💐👍🌷🙏🍺👌🥂👏🍹🙏.
