- For everyday drivers, driving in the rain raises the risk of a fatal crash by 34%. For professional race-car drivers who regularly compete in the rain, talent can only help so much when you're driving over three times the pedestrian speed limit. We spoke with IndyCar racer Colton Herta about how he and other drivers survive and even win such high-speed races during a torrential downpour.

How Professionals Survive Racing 200 Mph In The Rain | Cars Insider - Авто та транспорт
Watch Formula one Brazil 2016, that race was wet masterclass from verstappen
I agree! That and 2008 British Grand Prix, fantastic win by Lewis Hamilton in the wet at his home race.
Verstappen just casually drifting a Formula 1 car in the rain
Yes, especially when he passed Nico. The amount of bravery to find grip in slippery conditions. Wow.
Upvote👌
Definitely one of the best wet racing driver out there
The person with this kind of superior skill is called “The Rainmaster”. Only two F1 drivers I know hold that title, Senna & Schumacher.
And Hamilton
Silverstone 2008
Turkey 2020
Monaco 2008
Brazil 2016
Japan 2007 & 14
Also seb torro rosso 2009 Sebastian 2019
Then max 2016 is a new chapter on its own.
Then you have likes of Alonso too...
Seb 2012 brazil . Button in canada. Along the listed
I guess we're going to forget about Fernando Alonso then, huh? 🥲
@@ratuldeoun7228 alonso always gets forgotten
Fascinating that we had a race car driver in the world, who was king in the rain. Aryton Senna.
Sir Jackie Stewart won a wet race by four minutes . Gilles Villeneuve qualified in the wet , and the second fastest time was eleven seconds slower . All of these three are masters .
Two words:
Donington. Park.
Nowadays it's verstappen who is king of the rain. Obviously he's nowhere near Senna's level, but better than all other current drivers in the wet imo
@@nathanaelmalm5641 why is he nowhere near senna?
@@derekcrymble9085 rip villeneuve. the greatest drivers.
0:54 what a save!
My favorite part of this is that they showed plenty of clips at COTA talking about the racing line but completely forgot about the corner where track limits aren't observed for IndyCar at COTA
Imagine if they interviewed Max Verstappen
Imagine if they interviewed Kimi
"Bwoah you just drive slower and be more careful."
@@KitKitChanIsaac it would be more like: “bwoah idk”
"I just ... drive normally but ... slower ..."
Bwoah it's wet
"Yeah I mean... I drive yeah"
Interviewing an American driver, and mostly showing only IndyCar clips.... the European slander is coming, and as an Asian onlooker, Im ready for the spectacle.
True lol, at least Colton has some European appeal from his links with F1 so it shouldn’t be **too** bad
@@lj5732 I mean I watch formula one but I have no problem with him it's close as formula one
100% chance they couldn't get clearance to use F1 footage, which would have been less relevant anyway given an IndyCar driver is the talking head.
nah I've got a lot of respect for IndyCar. In my opinion it's at least equally demanding as F1
Hamilton in Turkey 2020 pulled off possibly the most impressive wet weather drive ever given how slippery the track was even before there was rain.
While it was a superb drive, it wasn't "the best".
Was good noth the best
Simple answer - downforce and special tyres!
Downforce if you don't know is pushing the car into the ground/track, which is depending on how much angle there is of the wing. More downforce produces more grip but massively reduces straight line speed.
The tyres used are not all around solid (aka slick tyres), they are like normal road tyres but made for racing. This allows the standing water to get caught in the cut out line part of the tyre and kick it up into the air which most likely instant evaporates due to the heat of the tyre.
It also means you can keep more contact on the track, rather than slick tyres which will skim across the water known as aquaplaning.
Hope this is useful 😂
Why does the steering wheel seems so loose? Lot more movement in the steering wheel than in the front tires.
The steering is a lot more sensitive, so the wheels turn less
So they can be more precise since even a few cms or even millimeters off sometimes is the difference between a win and a trip to the grass or gravel off track
Not really, it just seems like. They only need a few degrees to take the most sharp corner of the calendar. It is also even more direct and aggressive than that of a normal car.
Mi ingles es basura
Adding to previous replies to your comment, IndyCars also don't have power steering. You gotta really crank the wheel to save the car sometimes.
I watch f1 more than Indy car but it could be due to understeer, frequently happens in f1 but I’m not too sure if it applies as much in Indy car in such conditions too
They should've mention formula 1 that takes a crazy amount of experience to even drive in the rain.
Watch Lewis Hamilton's victory in the British Grand Prix in 2008. Pure brilliance.
nice. This makes me ant to learn mroe about cars and become racer
You know it’s a motorsports video aimed at non-fans when the comments section is nothing but f1 fans
Skills
Senna, hamilton and Schumacher are the best in history on the wet
Take dow Hamilton and put Clark 🙃
@@eliasgill2453 Why not Hamilton?
@@WarayF1 because Hamilton is in top 4 and Jim is on top 3 with Schumi and Senna (talking about racing on the rain).
....
You know what, your right, let's put them on top and add Alonso to the list: Senna, Clark, Schumi, Ham and Alonso🤘
Seb:
Am i joke to you?
@@mequana senna would absolutely destroy seb in the rain
watch the cota nascar 2021 race and the mid ohio 2017
Cota 2021 for nascar was crazy
Omg those two races were crazy and the fact that they drove in the rain and those cars are that heavy, total respect
Something that I always asked myself, mostly with open single seaters is how the pilot can manage the impact of the rain on itself. Like. If you are doing 200kph, the droplets from the rain are hitting your body at that speed.
Does the suit fully protects you from the impacts, or is it still somewhat painful?
I remember hearing that one time a while back an indycar driver fractured a finger (or something like that) after a fly struck it while travelling at 200Mph so hundreds of raindrops must have some impact
@@racecardriverrr4201 oh, lol, that must have been painful.
Did he carried on driving?
>has a picture from the 2007 european grand prix in the thumbnail
>also doesn't talk about or show F1 even once in the video
>only interviews one driver
seems legit
I know it's crazy other motorsports than F1 exists. Weird right?
Me watching this while heavy rainfall
I live for this shit !!!!!
Should've asked Senna & Schumacher or ask Hamilton today

And people still ask why racing is a sport?
Yeah for most people racing is just driving fast around a track.
Most people do not know how challenging this is.
Why is nobody mentioning Fernando Alonso because he is the actual master of rain in F1!
lol, Fuji 2007?
🧢
donnington 1993
Plot twist : they dont
Those clips are nothing compared to the european races. If you wanna see a masterclass in the wet, watch the 1996 Spanish Grand prix where some guy in a shitbox Ferrari wins the race by a mile.
