  • After years and years of riding a Vespa GTS250 scooter, I'm still amazed at what a satisfying ride it is. I've ridden many other scooters and motorcycles over the years and I have to say that the GTS remains a unique experience.
    In this video I'll share 5 of the reasons why I love riding the Vespa GTS so much. If you have other reasons, share them in the comments. Or if you find riding the Vespa something different, share those too.

      I normally choose some more subdued music for a video. I just decided to see what UA-cam Music had to offer in the Jazz realm and stumbled upon the track. It kind of matched how I felt while I was riding.

    Great review thank you Steve for sharing your experience your riding experience and your thoughts with us. Great photos you have taken with your Vespa sir.
    I am new to the Vespa and I really like it for many reasons.
    Ease of use, yes indeed, tick that box
    Zippy, you can get ahead of the traffic
    Easy to park, give that another tick
    Great for inner city riding in the traffic, cars don’t get annoyed at you when you are overtaking them, in fact they give way to you and make room for you to get through in stationary traffic. Unlike my Blackbird where cars looks to cut you off, on my scooter they do the exact opposite.
    Also the fuel economy it is frugal especially with today’s fuel prices the Vespa uses very little fuel.
    In addition, they look great and the build quality is superb.
    I have a 2014 250GTSie and I love it.

I'm not ready to give up on a brand new BMW R1250 GSA so early in my experience even at this older age but as I am a caregiver for my wife who has dementia I may approach it differently if that's possible. It's a challenge I want in life right now as learning and gaining skills on a variety of 2 wheeled vehicles comes with the territory. The music and performance studio I'm building in my house is the other passion. A fever and holdover from my playing professionally through the 70's. Remember those?? Well done, as always. I liked the dash on my 250 GTS better than on the 2020 300 GTS. The riding experience was similar, but the HPE engine on the 2020 did pull stronger, and the ABS brakes and traction control were a real plus.

    • @ScooterintheSticks

      Thanks Jim for the kind words about the video.
      The dash on the 250 is really useful with tons of information. It may not look as elegant as some of the newer ones, but I'll take the information any day.
      I've thought about ABS brakes and traction control as being something for which I would trade up. But the reality for me, I've never had the need for either, even riding in snow. As an instructor once told me, you should seldom if ever engage the ABS. He felt too many riders relied on it rather than learn how to brake. I'm not sure how I feel about it but I know with the Himalayan, I've not triggered the ABS yet either on the road or off.

    Thanks for the great video, Steve. Your scenic shots and the music plus your calm affect really capture why this scooter and the experience of riding it is special.
    I have a project of paintings and drawings of Vespas, Lambrettas and other scoots, mostly vintage, and your shots were inspiring me to do more of some modern Vespas, too.
    I have had a long love affair with these machines. I have a ‘64 that I love riding as much as I can and fills me with joy.
    But recently I have been looking into some modern options as a way to extend my riding into less favorable weather conditions, which is how I came across your videos. I’m going to check out your video on winter riding next.

      @@ScooterintheSticks Thanks, Steve. I got to ride in to work today on my ‘64 Allstate (with some upgrades to the performance), which was a wonderful way to start my day on a gorgeous Fall day.
      I’m in Portland, OR, and my bigger concern for winter is traction with ice and rain. I’ve had one bad experience with my drum brakes not cooperating in a heavy rainstorm some years ago, and since then I am much more cautious about riding in marginal weather anymore. I also now live in a hilly, wonderfully curvy, forested area, but where there is a lot more slippery, organic debris on the roads in the winter. That is why I am looking for other options for the poorer weather months.
      But I don’t think I could ever give up my vintage Vespa alltogether. In one of your other videos, I think in the one about the Vespa experience, you mention that riding a motorcycle is like being a fighter pilot, but on your scooter you focus more on the landscape and the scooter disappears.
      The flying analogy holds true on an older scooter, too, only it’s not a fighter plane, it’s a Stearman. My dad was a pilot, and many of my road trips growing up were in smaller, propeller airplanes. I never got my pilot’s license, but I certainly did a lot of right seat flying. Well, on my old Vespa I have always felt like a barnstormer riding in an old, open cockpit biplane. It’s noisy, and you have to fight the machinery a bit more, but it also gives me a feeling of flight unlike anything else that does not have wings.
      Keep doing what you’re doing, some of us out there really appreciate it, and I enjoyed bumping into your stretch of the world in the internet!
      If you are curious about the paintings and drawings, you can see some at knaebelart.com.
      Cheers.

    Have just run across your channel and watched a few of your videos. Really like what I have seen so far. You are doing what I would love to do with mine - leisurely rides on the backroads with some photography thrown in. I just bought a 2023 Super Tech. I am a new rider and will get my license in a few weeks. I love the back roads you have in your back yard. There are many backroads where I live too but I am in Texas. Places are measured by time not distance because the state is so big and everything is so spread out - which means everyone pretty much drives at mach 5 with their hair on fire, even on the back roads. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

    • @ScooterintheSticks
      @ScooterintheSticks  8 місяців тому

      I can't imagine riding in Texas. I suppose I can't even get my head around the size and scope of the state. And because of how spread out everything is it probably doesn't have the spiderweb of roads we have here in Pennsylvania. No big speads of privately owned land here and even the state forests are crisscrossed with many roads.
      The hair on fire Mach 5 travel seems a likely outcome of those vast distances. Be careful to not get caught in someone's afterburner!

    • @mannfan12

      @@ScooterintheSticks LOL yeah gotta stay away from those afterburners. We have the nation's highest speed limit. 85 on a toll road between San Antonio (where I live) and Austin. Hello again. After taking long time to think about what I will get as bike to replace my Kymco and .. I will not getting a Vespa. My local terrible eastern european roads are almost like off-road at places. I was thinking about the Honda super cub at first but then I just fell in love with the new Royal Enfield classic 350 and the price is just a little it more over the Cup .. And felt like my bike from the first moment. With this 19/18 wheel and long stroke suspension is very good for my roads.. I would say it's a little bit like adv bike. Yes, it's not cvt drive but at least can be fitted with heal-toe shifter /like the cup and the meteor 350/ and have very light clutch. I will not stop to watch your videos .. On rough roads, especially ones with a lot of potholes, the bigger wheels and longer suspension will be a good choice. I've had my eye on adding a Classic 350 to the garage. I have a GIVI 370 topcase on the rear rack all the time and I use it often. The front rack seldom gets used unless I have some strange item to haul like a watermelon. Or a tent and sleeping bag.
      If I had to reduce to one machine, right now in my current physical condition, it would probably be the GTS with the Himalayan running a close race. The GTS is so functional in so many ways, especially in hauling stuff. The Himalayan ranks close mainly because the novelty hasn't worn off yet. I really enjoy riding it and going places that the Vespa struggles with.

The big items to date have been a fuel pump, rear shocks, tires, muffler, bottom repainted (because of winter salt), and regular maintenance stuff like oil changes, belt changes, fluid flushes. I also use an Insta 360 camera to get some of the odd angles and views. I don't generally use any sound from that camera because of the wind noise. That means I have to lay in other audio in the editing process.
      For the opening shot I recorded with my Canon G5 Mark II point and shoot camera. I recorded the audio on a digital voice recorder in my pocket using a lavalier mike. Again, I add that digital audio in editing.

      @ScooterintheSticks  Рік тому +1

      I live in Central Pennsylvania. We have cold, snowy winters here. Regarding traction in rain, snow, and ice, I'm not fearful but I go to great lengths to manage the risk. That includes special winter tires, much slower speeds and less aggressive cornering, and careful choice of routes. And on days when it is already snowing, or the forecast calls for really bad weather, I'll leave the scooter at home.
      For many riders I know, and car drivers as well for that matter, winter riding when traction is bad is a problem for them because they want to believe they can operate in the same way they do when things are dry and warm. No tire, no 4WD, nothing will allow that. Slow down, plan well, think ahead, things like that are the key. A big change. And you know how people are with change...

    What would you think of a 77-year-old man buying a Vespa. In my 20s and 30s I rode Hondas and Harleys. Have never ridden a Vespa but I did ride a Sears Allstate when I was 15. I think those were made by Vespa.

    • @ScooterintheSticks
      @ScooterintheSticks  7 місяців тому +1

      You raise a topic that more and more occupies my thoughts -- riding as I get older. My immediate gut reaction is to declare, "Hell yes get a Vespa." But I realize that such a decision is dependent on many aspects of our health and abilities. I hope I can keep riding at 77 but that's still a way off for me.
      I suppose the only thing I can really say is that if you are physically and mentally able to ride then the only remaining question is how much risk you are willing to take on. Falling off a scooter or motorcycle at 77 isn't the same as it would be at 60. Or younger.
      Already I've scaled back the risks I'm willing to take in homage to my aging body. But I can also say that when I can't ride a motorcycle anymore I will still be riding a Vespa scooter.
      In regard to a modern Vespa, they are deceptive in their power, quickness, and nimble nature. I know more than one Harley rider who has scared themselves on their first ride on a Vespa GTS scooter. The reaction to the throttle from a standstill is almost as instantaneous as an electric vehicle. And the small wheels make it possible to dart around in ways you would never achieve on a Harley. So go slow and be careful when you have your first chance to try out a new Vespa.
      And yes, the Sears Allstate from the '60s was a Vespa!
      Good luck. Hope this helps.

    I see you also ride in winter. Have you ever had issues with salt and rust? It's easy to find forums saying do and don't, no conclusions...

    • @ScooterintheSticks
      @ScooterintheSticks  Рік тому

      I suppose the key to your question is the definition of "issues." My Vespa has paid a price in terms of rust and corrosion on various parts which affect the cosmetic appearance of the scooter. If you want to maintain a clean and shiny scooter with no imperfections in the finish then winter riding is definitely not possible. I've just accepted that my scooter won't be as pretty as it could be.
      Then there's the more severe results of slush, salt, and grit that threaten performance and the structural integrity of the scooter.
      In my case it meant having to brush, sand, and refinish the muffler every spring and eventually replace it when it corroded through. I also had to repaint the underside because the rust had blistered away the paint and threatened to rust through. That was after 10 years or so of winter riding.
      And other parts have shown extreme corrosion that eventually required replacement. The brake calipers being the most serious. The centerstand also rusted through. But these were more annoyances than anything that would "kill" the scooter.
      In my experience Vespa scooter riders seem to fall into two categories -- those who want to ride and have a shiny new looking scooter, and those who want to ride and don't care as much whether the scooter maintains that brand new look. I fall into the latter category and allows me to ride through the salt and grit of winter.
      There's not really a right or wrong choice. Just an understanding is needed of your personal preferences and tolerance in regard to the damage being done to your scooter.
      And none of this discussion has touched on the risk of riding in winter. That's a different subject.
      Hope this helps.
