  • Converting HDMI to SDI doesn't have to be expensive! I found a smaller HDMI to SDI converter for $30 and in this video I show you how rig it up for use with 4K cameras. HDMI to SDI Converter Box on Amazon (PAID LINK): geni.us/6ojZg33
    USB Battery on Amazon (PAID LINK): geni.us/ankerusbbattery
    Power Cable on Amazon (PAID LINK): geni.us/0DHLb

    Alternative Cheese Plate on Amazon (PAID LINK): geni.us/NDa6Ll4
    HDMI to SDI Box on Amazon (PAID LINK): geni.us/6ojZg33
    If you're looking for some nice SDI cables, I've found these colored cables to work great. The colors make it easy to trace the cables and see where each camera is connected.

    Thanks for this tutorial. I was looking at buying some Blackmagic HDMI to SDI boxes to use with the BM Atem Mini. I thought it better to use SDI leads instead of HDMI because I need 15ft plus distance from the 2 cameras I'll be using.

    Perfect timing, I may need to convert my GH5 to SDI soon! My only concern though is that it would need to work with an interlaced system from time to time. I don't suppose there's a way to convert the signal to 1080i instead of 1080p?

    Hello, thanks for the video... Has converting the HDmi out from Lumix to sdi removed the latency issue and lag? Or does the converted sdi signal still have it? Assuming the camera shoots in 4K. Is the HDmi to Sdi adapter able to take the signal and downs ale it without a lag? Does the camera give you a message about.. Downconverting causing a slowness in AF response or not...
    Thanks

    SDI is also super easy to apply a distribution amplifier for, so even tho SDI can run really long, it's still not expensive to even longer runs - say from a switcher to a football stadium.

    awesome , will buy and try . I do some work for low cost TV and live broadcast work and i have been borrowing a converter up until now . Because in broadcast its all about SDI 1080i 50i signal . Or 720p\50 over SDI for some live streaming stuff. 4K ? when talking to broadcast people, they dont see 4K coming until many years from now in this kind of work .

    Quick question. Does the on screen display on Lumix camera can be set off so it wont appear on your video as it passes the switcher? with some camera with hdmi having problems that the onscreen displays cannot be turned off. So your recorded video passing to the switcher has icon and everything on whats on the camera screen. Thank you and nice info here on your video.

      The BM ones I found to be more compatible with projectors and things along the lines. I use this same model of SDI converter for myself up as my vision mixer (Roland V-1HD) only inputs HDMI, and whilst my cameras all output HDMI they are limited to 10m max before you get signal cut out. This is especially prevalent in what I use them for which is boxing and MMA event filming, the vibration from the canvas caused A LOT of interference in HDMI cables and causes them to cut out. So I use a small 1.5m HDMI cable, convert to SDI and then back to HDMI on the opposite end, I can then set up wide-angled cameras up to 100m away with the SDI cable. This model of SDI converters works great for that. However, I've found when trying to get my output onto a projector for the screens in the venues i got to (we are talking top of the range A/V equipment now, not your standard home theatre projector) The converters don't seem to won't to know! I have to convert from HDMI out of the vision mixer to SDI, some of the projectors will take SDI, the converter doesn't work for that, and then for the ones that only take HDMI or VGA, the converter also won't work. However, I found the BM ones work flawlessly each time. This isn't to say it happens on every projector, a couple of ones I've come across it works on, however there has been on a couple of occasions incidents where the one demoed on this video has failed.

    The SDI cable link to Amazon takes you to a single SDI cable on Amazon UK costing £35 alone, that is even before buying any of the other items you have listed Caleb. - that takes it to at least £75 (@$90+) so far for such a project in UK.

    I am looking at a Lilliput field monitor set-up that has SDI input along with HDMI but main reason I’d go with this more expensive monitor (US 467) is to reduce latency in signal from DSLR to monitor. I don’t believe this was addressed specifically in your vid and I don’t see in comments either. If you are converting the HDMI signal to SDI and the latency issue is inherently in the HDMI output then it stands to reason that the latency would still be there through the conversion and thus, no improvement? If this is the case, do you know of another way to take an output from the camera to SDI that bypasses the HDMI output and improves latency issues?

    Hello. Question i have a Sony and 2 Panasonic camcorders which have HDMI outputs. I have several of the same HDNI to SDI converter and i was wondering though i seem to be having an issue when trying to use them. when i connect them from my Camcorder to the converter then to my switcher i works ok for several minutes but then i notice the signal starts to glitch. I'm able to notice it on my switcher's multiview. I would think the signal would work just fine but not sure why it is glitching. Your thought5s and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

      Yeah, I usually keep it around there. I guess it's just the limiter that's kicking in and that the signal would've hit 0dB anyway. Can't find any documentation on it, I just need to be aware that the signal may clip even though it never hits 0dB. It's easy to get fooled when the meters look good. :(

    • @brakom
      @brakom 6 років тому

      The main reason for using SDI is that it will let you use longer cables. HDMI will usually work OK for distances under 25 feet, but if you're using SDI you will have no problems using 300 feet. SDI will also be more robust.

    • @MoronMonkeyPro
      @MoronMonkeyPro 6 років тому

      Maybe he should've elaborated, but he has a live multicam event coming up. HDMI will have signal loss pretty fast, close to 25 feet. The best advantage though is their tough. While not quite as friendly as XLR runs, SDI is stiff, strong, and well shielded to prevent signal loss or damage. We used it on lots of live events and it's awesome.

    • @TaylorThomasVideo

      @SpaceAgeConsulting 6 років тому +1

      Maybe I don't *need* to view or stream in 4K but being able to record and edit 4K down to 1080p is a dream. I can do punch ins, dolly moves, zooms... If a 4K camera is close in price to its 1080 counterpart then it is 4k all the way!

    • @eladbari
      @eladbari 6 років тому

      I appreciate your point of view on this, man. And I can totally agree that if your thing is to edit in 4k, as long as the delivery system is 1080p- then its totally makes sense by me. I think that 4K downscaled to 1080 looks indeed sharper [not that sharpness is my ultimate goal, but it's definitely handy].
      I will just say that the whole thing of 'punching in'...zooming into footage....come on. If your DOP is a good one- then he will supply you with great compositions, without any need to zoom into the footage. Also, dolly moves done digitally by zooming into 4K or sliding left to right- it doesn't feel as organic as a real camera movement.
      The only very specific use i could [personally] see in 4K footage is if you're shooting an interview of some sort, and you only have 1 camera, then it's time efficient to be able to shoot a medium [waist] shot, and then being able to cut and zoom into some sort of close up. It still won't feel like you had an A + B camera, but it's the best you can do with what you got.
      I just place the benefits of 4K on the scale, alongside with the cumbersome-ness of the size and how it doesnt stream or play well on editing systems- and for me the downsides outweight the upsides. I just hope no Panasonic or Sony or whatever monstrous company - will shove 8K down our throats now, cause they need to make more money, convincing us that 8K is the shit, so we buy more from them. This is all artificial creation of tech-need. it's a tech-want..not need. Those companies need to work on other things besides resolution! Improve Dynamic range! Improve the jelly effect and include global shutter! These will improve our footage much more

      im at work with a fast intel Xeon processor I believe, 32GB ram, 512 SSD drive, GTX 1080- and whenever I play a 4K 25fps file- I see one frame..and it's stuck. it doesn't play at all.

      eladbari what are you playing the file from? A dedicated video player like VLC or UA-cam? Either way that's an outlier, my 6 year old laptop with an AMD Apu can play 4k smoothly
