Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures #35 - SDI to HDMI Conversion Excursion
Our star-crossed IT guy, Krazy Ken, is back with a new mission-convert SDI video from his Blackmagic URSA to HDMI. Sounds simple-sounds very simple. However, if it sounds easy, it's probably too good to be true.

Hi, I have a dslr with an HDMI port but a Monitor with SDI (which I want to use this port). Can this Converter work the other way around than how your using it?
Pro trick: you can watch series at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
"For being called Universal Serial Bus, there sure are a lot of variants!" LOL!
I use those same converters for live broadcasts at school
Can you record 4k in camera while monitoring through this adapter SDI to HDMI on an HD monitor or hdtv?
In other words, can the SDI output be setup for a different resolution and frame rate than what is being recorded? (In my case record at 4k cinemaDNG 24p... recording and 1080 60i out through the SDI to HDMI converter and to a regular HDTV)
Did you end up mounting the converter to the URSA? If so how did you do it? Looking at this exact same solution so i dont have to replace my monitors and wireless video
I still remember Krazy Ken

YAY, SOME MORE *CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY*
What hdmi output this supports can you tell me if it supports 2k out or 4k out or just 1080p iut
13:54 You have a brother? And you didn't say anything about it in newer episodes?? I have missed a lot of KKTM episodes...
Those mini displays are ropey AF. Bought one years ago as a second monitor for a BMD cam and it had the same weird issues. It’s something with the resolution?..
Thanks for doing this. I bought two of these units. The first one did not work, there is no warranty whatsoever on these: it's just a gamble. I bought a second one, same thing. I watched your video for some assistance. I can't muck with the frame rate or resolution. I have to shoot 1080p in 24fps or 30fps because I'm putting this into an BMD ATEM Mini Pro for live streaming. I complained to BMD but got no help. I purchased another unit made by AVMedia it worked initially, now it is dead.
While watching I remembered Jim carrey ,😀.
Bro im using BMCC 2.5 k. I tried to connect it with Lilliput monitor through the same converter you mentioned.
So. Do you have any tips instead of buying video assist
Tips for what? What’s the specific issue.
P.S. thanks for watching.
euh, you know the front sdi connector(next to the lens mount) puts out 1080 for external monitors, Right. you seem to use the back SDI out. That puts out 4K (or what ever you have set) BTW, that converter does not down convert 4K to 1080. And furthermore, you can take power for the monitor from front connector below it too.
this was made on my 19 birthday
you're kamera was pretty good.
you're funny, i have the same problem with my blackmagic production camera 4k looks like my sdi is broken or the camera sends a signal that my lcd display can't view.
I've heard great things about Lilliput monitors, and they supposedly do HDMISDI conversion as well, though obviously they're not cheap, so the Video Assist may be your best bet.
That logo is very representative

Set the project to 60fps, set the off-speed frame rate to 24. That's an easy solution.
That cable you used was MINI-USB
Oh shoot. Did I say "micro" in the video??? I always mix those up. Good catch.

hello
Get a decimator. You dont have a scaler In your setup....
Yayyy i am early
So in other words, the converter doesn't work !!
1080i wut
1080i is rather standard for TV broadcast. The "i" stands for interlaced (as opposed to progressive). The video frames and split into fields (half the pixels are streamed in the "upper" field, and the other half are streamed in the "lower" field). The fields are combined to create a frame when pushed through broadcast.
Progressive, on the other hand, pushes the full frames (as opposed to pushing fields). Does that kinda make sense?
I mean, you have a flip-out display on the camera, why bother with an extra display on top (which is not that much larger than the flip-out) if you're "never going to use it in the field"? If you had a RED camera, I can understand considering RED cameras don't come with anything. This just seems like a silly purchase to me.
I need a screen yay can face me so if I’m doing a solo shoot of myself, I can see my face. The screen flips out, but doesn’t rotate.
Ah, I see.
Also the EFV is very expensive. If you don't have one, this can help when putting the camera on a shoulder rig.
