My life isn't all about youtube, it's my family, friends and career and what takes priority over the other. Perhaps when you have the same, you'll realise this too. When I do have the time to film, edit and upload something, it's a QUALITY video which is what I'm all about. Normally I upload about monthly. If that's not good enough for anyone, then that's fine, but I'm not changing my life because of it. If you could see the work that goes into these then you'll see these are not 5 minute editing projects.

Sad imagining the people that built it, that worked there, and the last one to shut the door and lock it on their last day working there.
The effort planning, designing, building and then de-commissioning, removing all of the catering equipment, the tables and chairs...

Excellent find! A virgin lift motor with historic oil and grease cans!
I had/have one of the Shell oil grease cans as was in the lift shaft. But mine had aircraft lube in it.
If you ever go back, open up that maintenance log book and should have a record of the last work done. That would give you an idea as to when this lift was shut off. Somebody mentioned (in comments on the other video) that the kitchen and white painted area was still in use in the 90's as the drivers' canteen. My bet is this lift was shut off when that was closed.
The quality of these videos is amazing, and I can't begin to imagine the work that goes into the editing (and especially the animated maps on this series!) I particularly love the attitude that if it a video doesn't come up to scratch, it's re-filmed. Quality over quantity wins every time... I wish a few more UA-camrs followed MM&MC's example.
Looks like that goods lift was at least overhauled / serviced in late 1988 according to the graffiti on the H-beam.
It would appear they didn't have a log card or anything, instead, let's write it on the beam!!
@@mrmattandmrchay Probably the log was in one of the other motor rooms, this one just being big enough for the wiring diagram. Writing down info on the beams for the cables would have been a good way to at least enable a new tech to see the age of them, and last test, so they can compare to the log. Saves time, as this was probably done by a repair team doing cable work, so they could not mix any of them up installing them. Then again the one building I lived in still had the original hoist ropes, with dates in 1937, though the traveller ropes were a lot newer, dating from the 1970's, as they do wear a lot faster, with the smaller sheaves. Original gearbox and motor, though not the original windings, those were done sometime in the 1980's, and the brake solenoid was done in the 1990's when I lived there, as it failed, broken off winding in it from rubbing, due to poor varnish.
Most definitely serviced because when he finds the ladder and climbs into the motor room a beam that holds the rope pulley said S/F New Ropes 4/5/79 Ray.
Literally says supplied and fitted new main and governor ropes. Main hoist ropes should last about 10years usually. Governor ropes are thinner so need changing more frequently depending on use.
Re-Ropes are done by repair teams and isn’t considered a service.

@@Alexis_du_60 Les ascenseurs sans machinerie c'est un peu pareil je pense étant donné que tu travailles directement dans la gaine, par exemple accéder aux armoires VF peut être particulièrement galère quand elles sont fixées au mur de la gaine au-dessus du dernier étage.
Il faut alors trouver un moyen de faire monter la cabine si le système est en panne et ensuite poser une échelle sur le toit de cabine, ce qui n'est pas très sûr et il est surtout interdit de travailler à l'échelle (Quoique ce dernier point peu de monde le respecte, et ce quelque soit le corps de métier).

many years ago, the lorry drivers used to sit in there at weekends to watch the football... I remember visiting that rest area as a hitch hiker in more recent years... it was sad to see that all closed up, - must be over twenty years since my last hitch hiking tour.... got a bit old for all that! ...more likely to pass there as a vehicle driver now...

Hi! Do you think the elevator would be functional if you turned it back on?
I doubt it everything collected dust and crap over the 30-40 years they haven’t ran it will probably get power but the cab itself might not move and if it does that’s surprising
Yes and no. The lift would turn on, but something would probably explode
It looks undamaged. I bet it would still work just fine after some minor maintenance. Those other old Otis elevators in this tower would probably still work too. It's surprising how well the equipment looks given the tower's been abandoned for decades. There's even still power in the plant room.
Hey thanks for the comment @Liftek Magyarorszagon. I was concentrating so much on the filming, that didn't actually come to mind. I probably wouldn't have done so, because if there was anything wrong you'd get a loud bang and it'll blow a circuit breaker somewhere in the building. That's bound to grab some attention and could be dangerous anyway - I film, and leave, I'm respectful enough not to cause any damage or issues to the building (unlike other channels I could mention!!!).
But I think you'll notice that the breaker is in the ON position, so it's probably not possible to power it up locally. If it WAS powered up, would probably still work, but probably the gates are open on the ground floor and it wouldn't run until they are shut. If you simply pressed the UP relay (which if you look, seems incredible dangerous and in bad condition), there might be something in the door way blocking it!
You'd probably smell a slight burning smell and perhaps a little smoke that will burn off from the motor as it warms up. Also there will be a slight high resistance between the contactors, as that's 30 years of dust that's built up between the contacts! Perhaps a bit of arching!
@@mrmattandmrchay Power on, but likely one of the control fuses is removed from the holder, so that even if power was applied by somebody the unit would still be safe for all, as you would have to check it, run it up under manual control, and oil up the guides first, but yes it would run no problem.

This tower nicely represents the UK. It once was fancy and good, but then got neglected and now it’s just an ugly remainder of its former self
Abandoned buildings like that exist in many countries from what I've seen.
Tower seemed a good idea in the 60s, and like Lancaster, it's now non-compliant with fire regulations and uninhabited. Must be costing Moto to keep it maintained so it doesn't affect the rest of the buildling. In reality no-one wants to travel a long way to get to it. Hence the ground floor, which is quickly accessible by everyone.
Love the tin of Shell grease in the corner, we had one at home when I was growing up and for all I know it's still there somewhere!

The rope configuration on this elevator is strange. The traction pulley has only one rope. But the cabin seems supported by two. Anyway, the ropes are thin, and that is some scary stuff.
Edit: Saw the second rope. Anyway, those are 6 mm ropes. For an elevator of four people, there should be three 8 mm ropes, or two 10 mm ropes.

Cool. A "ClickSnap ProPole Painter's Pole Adapter" may be something you may wish to add to your gears kit. With a long enough painters poll it can help get the shot almost over any wall. without using a drone.
A guy called Roy fitted new ropes to this unit on 4/5/1979. More maintenance in 1998 too, It's quite interesting to see these little marks left by people many years ago who are probably long dead now.
yes, and I must admit that I didn't think of that side of things, i.e. the person's probably passed some time ago.

It's a worm gear drive on the motor so friction and just a low current magnetic field would be enough to hold the elevator.
Imagine the shock if the lift suddenly started when you looked at it.

Lots of care home lifts had motor rooms as compact as this. My father had to squeeze into some tight spaces to repair such!
When my mother was in a care home they were replacing the lifts there, going from 2 to 3 lifts in the same shafts. Skinny long Schindler lifts, long enough to take a hospital bed, and a nurse next to it, with the counterweights on the side between cars. They went to 3 MRL units, Melcorp made, though the MRL controllers still were mounted in the old motor room, as there was plenty of space there, and plenty of big holes for cabling. They had to maintain at all times at least one lift functioning, so they took nearly 6 months to do this.

You would have liked the lift in my old workplace. It was an early 60s model goods lift, still in service.
It had some retrofitted switches on the internal cage doors that made it stop if you opened them whilst travelling, but otherwise looked untouched. It was an Otis, with similar switchgear to the one shown and the same concertina doors, albeit twice the width, and the glass view pane had wired glass. Made a loud clunk when you pressed the call button.
There was a shaft light that could be accessed from the motor room which was full of old components. Interesting stuff.
In another room, there was an old boiler and metal round-pin electrical sockets.
Sounds wicked, but unfortunately very difficult to find these days.

Surely that's gotta be up there as one of the tiniest motor rooms ever. Certainly going to be interesting to see all the technical aspects of things coming next!
It was lucky at the end that (I assume) no-one noticed the Morris lift's indicator showing 2 for that short moment, its clear watching that downward journey how much you were thinking "please don't stop at 1, please don't stop at 1!"

Yep, maintenance and access doesn't seem to be an important consideration! And the high power relays (with open copper terminals) are right at the back behind the machine and the stuff you would want to keep away from!! Imagine having to climb up INTO this 'cupboard' to do any major work on the controller!!
On the way down, unless it was someone from security, I doubt any of the public would be any the wiser! Thanks for the comment as usual!
@@mrmattandmrchay with the health and safety requirements not being as strict then as they are now I can imagine that ease of access and maintainability was definitely not at the forefront back then, but instead just using as little space as possible took priority. I do not want to imagine having to climb up into there to do intricate maintenance work on that equipment, would be a scary experience for sure, especially having to get out afterwards! Think the big red "DANGER" signs don't quite do it enough justice tbh!
And yeah perhaps the general public wouldn't take any notice of the lift going up to 2 but security/staff would be the ones that might notice. It's a shame the old lift next to it is now abandoned, would love to see it working again as I chickened out on riding it in 2019 due to the "GOODS LIFT ONLY" signs above the doors while it was still working. Wishful thinking makes me hope they might put it on again one day but realistic thinking makes me certain it'll be abandoned til it gets replaced (if they even bother with that as they seem content with just the one working one)
@@mrmattandmrchay I had one at the previous job, where it was a little bit bigger, but yes crammed on top of the car as well, so as to avoid the expense of pouring the motor room on the roof slab. Also a nice little Schindler dumb waiter, with simple controls, and a nice compact little controller almost the same as that one.
The way that all the electrical system is modular so that if a specific component goes bad they can just put a new on in place real quick and go on there way.

Oh I know the fear of not being able to get out safely! I've gotten myself in that place a few times - sneaking in but finding it much harder to sneak out!
When you're in situations like this, you're kind of blinkered (well I am anyway), I get in, film everything that I need to, then get out! The problem with this approach is, I film something that I didn't notice , then have to go back AGAIN to re-film it! Like the brake for example!
@@mrmattandmrchay the worst for me was when I was stuck on the upper rooftop of a converted building. the penthouse, on the lower rooftop, had been unoccupied for years, but suddenly had someone return when I was up doing an explore above their roof... and the only way out was down a ladder by their front door then into the stairwell. Friends and I had to lay flat on the roof, in puddles, to not be seen as they returned. The resident left the outside lights on, and their front door ajar, so we waited what seemed like ages before one by one sneaking out, right past their open front door. Can't believe we got away with that. I had no idea what I'd say if questioned, I was desperately trying to think of something legit like "satellite repair"

@@mrmattandmrchay Not as long as you think. I was in the Met police for 14 years and left in October 2018 to work for TfL. I applied at some point the following year for tube driver (train operator is the proper title). I had a paper assessment day and then an interview and vocal test day all within a few weeks of each other. I got a start date within a few weeks for the following month during which time I had my medical. Unfortunately my April 2020 start date was postponed until May 2021 due to COVID. Three weeks at Ashfield House leaning rules and procedures and gaining track certificate. Then onto the depot for driver training including a week of stock training (learning how the train works), line route knowledge and SPAD training. I passed my road test early September 2021. I never imagine a few years back I’d be doing this now. It’s interesting how life turns out. Piccadilly is a great line as it’s fully manual being the 1973 stock. No automation whatsoever.

Either the system relies on gearbox friction or the motor has a internal brake. There are quite some possibilities there, a interesting one would be a design like the Demag conical rotor brake motors.
That's what I thought, but you'll find out in part 4 (thanks to Peter Lomas for providing the answer, ex-express and otis engineer)
@@mrmattandmrchay Worm gear I would say, the torque to turn it on the output shaft is more than what the gear will withstand, so it simply stays put. Probably also has those big normally closed contacts on the motor contactor shorting 2 phases of the motor as well when deenergised as extra safety. high enough worm ratio and the lift is slow as molasses, but also only going to move when the cables snap.

Do you know what they will do with the original Otis?
Worm drive gearbox, the worm can turn the gear, but the gear can not turn the worm (if it was attempted with enough force either gear teeth would break off or the box would blow apart) so it doesn't need an external brake mechanism
Cleaning that cover/schematic was like watching an archeologist blowing the dust off of some hieroglyphic tablet from a bygone civilization.
Many lifts have worm drives but also brakes at the same time.
And if you release the brake, the cab will immediately start shooting upwards at high speed (If it's empy as the counterweight would be much heavier) and possibly crashing into the ceiling of the shaft if you don't let go of the brake release lever in time.
But there are also some drives where if you release the brake nothing happens and to move the cab you have to actively wind the flywheel, oddly enough.

I do have a question though, are the Broadmoor sirens still active or have they been finally deactivated entirely? haven't seen anyone else upload about them (I'm aware of their popularity amongst siren fan) lately, so I've been wondering if they've finally rolled out with the deactivation plan (unless I'm mistaken)
P.S. don't mind the people who don't like the gap in-between uploads, they've got nothing else to do but nitpick at people behind their screens.

I would like give a shout out RIP to my friend Darrel. He’s actually he introduced me to this channel and the wonderment of lifts. Over the weekend he found himself 24 stories at the bottom of a lift pit after a piece of plywood covering the shaft gave way.

Hiya Frosty Gaming! We're good thanks, hope you are too? Chay's out of college, working for my company temporarily, then he's on to his full time career early next year hopefully! He's 18 now. About the other goods lift in the main lobby, I actually had someone message me today about it - still not working. Doubt it ever will be to be honest - It'll end up like Lancaster, a big advertising board put in front of it to blank it off.

While height in prinipale is no problem for me, like living in the 6th floor, climbing a lighthouse or leaning on the furthest railing on the visitor's platform of a skyscraper, but liftshafts are scaring me somehow. Crazy, I know, but it is like it is and even I, for myself, would like to know why... 🥺

Ropes last changed in '88, changed in '79 before that. Long before i was even born. I wonder if Roy is still alive......
A motor brake wouldn't be necessary with that type of gearbox or if there are safety mechanisms on the guide rails.
What a tiny motor for the goods lift. I guess if it using a worm drive, no brake is needed as the lift won't be able to turn the motor.
I did wonder at the end whether the 'escape' lift would stop at floor 1 - try explaining that to the security guard!!!
Many lifts have a worm drive but also a brake.
And if you manually release the brake, it may very well start moving by itself, either upwards or downwards depending on the load of the cab given that the counterweight would be heavier than an empty cab.
But I must admit that there are actually lifts where if you release the brake nothing happens and you have to actively wind the flywheel if you want to manually move the cab.
Different worm gear ratios I think are the explaination.

Too many people think that a worm gear won’t run backwards.
THEY CAN and, given a chance, THEY WILL.
Small gears in a model may not run backwards but a lift gear, running in an oil bath, has very little friction.
I have witnessed the serious damage caused by runaways. Fortunately this was only during construction.
By the time they’re in service they are very very safe.
@@caroleast9636 Yes, if you release the brake on some lifts, the empty car will start moving upwards, pick up speed, keep shooting upwards and finally crash into the ceiling with extraordinary violence if you don't let go of the brake release lever in time.
But there are also lifts where releasing the brake does absolutely nothing !
You have to actively turn the flywheel in the easiest direction in order for the car to move (slowly).

Yea the old otis elevators has been out of order for a long time and another youtuber managed to see where the elevator was on the 2nd floor
I do have to wonder how much talking you did to the security staff off-camera to persuade them to allow you to poke around up there without supervision.

Luckily, the structure at the top was solid, but I never actually left the ladders. The level with the wood, that's the level below which you can only see down, but cannot access.
