    I love the look of the shadow box fence but I found out the hard way that it made it easier for my dogs to chew on the fence. I also caught some neighbor kids using the horizontal 2x4s as ladder rungs and climbing over my fence. Two seasons and the fence was trashed.

    I'm from the UK and at the bottom of pailingfencing we run along board at the bottom of the fence so the end grain doesn't soak up moisture plus you can use it to level you boards instead of using a string line

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  7 років тому +1

      That makes a lot of sense. Its just not used on this type of fence out here. I think the customer is going to be landscaping and adding rock on both sides of the fence. I just build a 50 foot fence and didn't use any kind of gravel board. I start a 100 foot fence tomorrow.

    Another option is to use steel posts or 4x6 posts standing perpendicular to incoming wind, if they want to keep the privacy.

      It took a bit of extra time. Using the spacer, then having to do it all over again on the other side. Once I had it all put together I went back and made sure that each picket had 6 screws each holding it to the rails. I'm glad I only build a few of these a year.

    at 5:49 why did you attach the fence to the house? couldn't you have just put the post a few inches closer to the house? i love that you use decking screws. can't stand to see fence companies that use nail guns only to see the fence literally begin falling apart a couple years later (likely soon after warranty expires).

    Before you start any excavation, post hole or any digging your first step is to call 811. If you hit a buried utility or gas line without calling 811 first you will be fined and or jailed.

    Would you happen to know if stained or painted pine could be used as pickets about 3.5 ft high. I've heard it will warp by some, and heard it will work by others. Any opinion?

    • @TheHandyman1

    Here in Australia there's a service called "Dial before you dig" It's the only 4 digit phone number I've ever seen in this country, and they have all the buried gas, water, sewage, electrical, internet on drawings, and they send them out to you. It's a requirement before any digging is done.

It was for "digging" small diameter holes into the ground, but it was just a hollow pipe with some teeth on it, and a T handle at the top, and as this was twisted, it worked it's way down. A big shop vac hose was attached at the top which sucked up the dirt. The guy said it was the easiest way to dig.

      I am, I have a short video I made this morning of the wind here in Indian Shores near Tampa. It was not that bad here.

    If you want you can learn from woodprix scripts how to make it yourself.

    New subscriber to your channel. Love the content. I used to live in Sacto....'83-'87 then '90-'96. I remember very well trying to dig and hitting hardpan. As of matter of fact, I had to buy the EXACT digging bar you used. I also employed large masonry bits to drill holes through the pan and then chipped away with the bar. I was planting a Tallow tree between my driveway and my neighbor's. Lived in the Arden Manor area. Another thing I remember was the FABULOUS weather which is evident in most of your videos. Looks like you do great work and have inspired me to get back at it. Keep it up!
