+Carlos Dasilva this vest is awesome only $39. Video will be out in November
It it hot to wear? Do tools fall out if you bend down?
Did not see you wearing it once in this video?
im no handy man but watching these types of projects is very satisfying
I love the look of the shadow box fence but I found out the hard way that it made it easier for my dogs to chew on the fence. I also caught some neighbor kids using the horizontal 2x4s as ladder rungs and climbing over my fence. Two seasons and the fence was trashed.
the fence does look really good and it's a great instructional video keep us the good work I look forward to seeing more of your work
Norm was the only instructional carpenter guy before. LOL !!
I'm from the UK and at the bottom of pailingfencing we run along board at the bottom of the fence so the end grain doesn't soak up moisture plus you can use it to level you boards instead of using a string line
That makes a lot of sense. Its just not used on this type of fence out here. I think the customer is going to be landscaping and adding rock on both sides of the fence. I just build a 50 foot fence and didn't use any kind of gravel board. I start a 100 foot fence tomorrow.
Another option is to use steel posts or 4x6 posts standing perpendicular to incoming wind, if they want to keep the privacy.
Dude, you totally left that cart in the parking lot
Ha Ha Ha. I sure did. I remember thinking to myself I probably should put this cart away. Then I though I need to get to work and off I went. I usually put them away. Thanks for watching
I hate when I forget to put all the hose clamps on during sprinkler repair, good to see the pros forget from time to time! Love your videos
Looks like a pallet
+Dad Extraordinary I never thought of it like that. but you are right it sure does. Thanks for watching.
Really like the design idea to accomodate for the wind
It took a bit of extra time. Using the spacer, then having to do it all over again on the other side. Once I had it all put together I went back and made sure that each picket had 6 screws each holding it to the rails. I'm glad I only build a few of these a year.
Looks like a popsicle or palet fence... lol, looks good but not the best! But then again, its all preference
If you were a contractor you would know that you build what the customer wants.
Would you mind sharing what you charged to build the fence. Well done!
Been there done that. Try using a big auger on a steep hill, that sucks.
hey god sir, love your vids. Curious, do you draw up or draft your fences prior to building them? awesome work
Nice work, thumbs up.
I also just build a shadow box fence, its a nice look
need a magnet on your glive for the screws
I have this fence also in a high wind area. 2 of the most susceptible sides ended up falling over. The fence is extemely heavy.
at 5:49 why did you attach the fence to the house? couldn't you have just put the post a few inches closer to the house? i love that you use decking screws. can't stand to see fence companies that use nail guns only to see the fence literally begin falling apart a couple years later (likely soon after warranty expires).
Yeah that's why the build houses with nails
My favorite kind of fence.
Posts on either side of the door look high. Not evenly high. From outside left one is really tall and right one is still taller than rest.
Did you cut them down after you stopped shooting?
Hello Handyman, love the work. What did you charge for labor on this job? Just curious, thank you!
I can't remember. I think it was around $3k
Thank you, i appreciate you getting back to me so quick!@@TheHandyman1
You have a link to another video blocking the final look at the fence.
Might as well work out side while the weather is still nice. Looking good!
Thanks, Its good to do some outside work.
Excellent work. Does anybody know how to make rising gate for a sloped driveway?
i can't figure out if you are plumber a chippy or electrician or a builder you can pretty much do anything we need more blokes like you in Australia
I'm mostly an electrician but have taught myself just about everything else over the years. What is a chippy?
Chippy is Australian name for carpenter (slang)
love your site :)
Thanks.
would love to see a skylight installation
I did a really nice custom one a few years ago. All I have is a slide show of it.
why did you place the latch on the outside of the gate? ... most latches / locks are on the inside ?
That's where this type of latch goes. It wont work on the inside.
Why didn't you use a gravel board at the bottom of your fence as moisture will soak up in to the pailings make them rot quicker
this design was spect out by the customer. And I have never heard or seen a gravel board. Do you mean boarder? The customer is taking care of the landscaping.
What does it look like finished? Can't see any of it for the pop up add at the end. FFS!
Tip.. they're couplers cheaper then the fasteners you used and faster for the irrigation
Before you start any excavation, post hole or any digging your first step is to call 811. If you hit a buried utility or gas line without calling 811 first you will be fined and or jailed.
+Corey Sharp I always call for locates. Thats why I had to hand dig all of these holes.
The fence was close to both electric and gas.
Started on a rough note when you just left the kart in the parking lot hahahah. How you do one thing is how you do everything. (:
When repairing water sprinkler systems. Why don't you use connectors made for those line. You use hose clamps and a barb fitting.
Why Do u feel a center support isn't necessary for the gate?
If you want to dig some difficult holes, try digging where I live. You can't dig down more than a few inches before you start hitting rocks anywhere from the size of your fist to the size of a basketball and sometimes bigger. They are everywhere.
What method do you use to set the posts? All concrete? Packed soil? Crushed rock? Sand? I appreciate the info partner.
all concrete, mixed in wheel barrel. Holes are just over 24 inches deep.
Would you happen to know if stained or painted pine could be used as pickets about 3.5 ft high. I've heard it will warp by some, and heard it will work by others. Any opinion?
I only use cedar or pressure treated pine for fences. Cedar is naturally resistant to rotting. pine will work but will not last as long as cedar or pressure treated wood.
Thanks so much. I was going to use goth pickets from Home Depot, but began seeing fences with squared off tops rather than the goth tops, and I like them better. I just didn't know which wood to use.
Do you have room in your shop to build the panels? Install would go way quicker.
+scott hillegass this type if fence has to be built in place to get it perfect.
Was the wood painted or stained afterward?
stained
the gate latch is on the outside?
How did you go about making sure that the fence posts were all in a straight line?
I used a string line
did you trim down the 4x4s at the gate? they look odd sticking out..
of course I did. It was the last thing.
*drives back, trims 4x4s at the gate right after posting reply to your comment =)
crtnkls ; ) you're silly.
How much did the materials cost for this project?
I think it was right around $900
What did this fence cost?
So screws are better than nails?
what screws do you use to attached the rails to the post?
they are epoxy coated exterior screws from home depot.
thank you, what's the length of the screw? will a 3.5 inch screw work for attached a rail to a post?
Yes 3 inch works fine counter sunk into the 2x4 rail the
Hope you sealed the fence or it's going to crack and bow??? Being curved
The customer stained it themselves.
DO YOU WORK IN THE ATLANTA GA AREA?
Why didn’t you overlap the rails?
I think that you need knee pads... Great work!
Doesn't matter if treated you need to stain/seal
I have 20 post holes to dig in a super rocky area....not looking forward to it.
I think I could build a fence almost as nice but not after digging out all those posts. Thats a ton of digging.
The gate could have been better
Nice Work but I think you should get a lavaliere mic for better sound quality because a lot of times I cannot hear you very well. But I love your work very good master remodeler.
I just got a new case that has openings for the mic. I have been trying to find a good external mic that will attach to the gopro. I really have to stay with the gopro. I actually just broke a gopro case last week. Thanks for watching and thanks for the feed back.
Where was this fence done? Looks like Eastern Colorado.
Good job, your work is very similar to mine. I should make UA-cam videos of my work.
Cool. I'm building a website for people who make a living as a handyman/remodeling. I should be up in a month.
Joseph Foster yeah you should.
@@TheHandyman1 Have you done anymore with the website?
Where are you located?
+Cristine Blue I don't. Give out my location
Ok, just trying to find out what state you're in for remodeling projects.
@8.27 Chem Trails.
Every internal combustion engine gives of CO2 and H2O. At altitudes like those, and at the temperatures they're released at, they instantly form a 'cloud' of sorts. It's simple chemistry.
Take a car up to that altitude and you'll likely have the same thing happen.
+jon fritsch. Wrong. chemtails are a thing. Harvard university actually had to let out that info because too many people were asking and they were simply denying until they had to admit they were spreading aluminum and shit above in our air that everyone is now breathing but saying its to reflect sunlight to prevent climate change. haha
You may as well used pallets
If you watched the video you would know this fence was spect out by the city. IT'S THE ONLY KIND OF FENCE ALLOWED IN THIS AREA OF TOWN.
looks great always glue and screw.
nice knee pads!
Do you enjoy what you do?
No
His hands must be cold.
Don't be lazy ahaha. Otherwise. Good videos.
sorry but there should be a 100mm [4''] gap between ground and bottom of slats to stop water rotting bottom of fence
Looks great!! Have you seen the fastcap power mag for your drill? www.fastcap.com/estore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=52446
I never head of it before but just looked it up. I might need to get one. I could put it to use just about every day.
Is there not a way for you to get a map or drawings of where everything is buried?
Here in Australia there's a service called "Dial before you dig" It's the only 4 digit phone number I've ever seen in this country, and they have all the buried gas, water, sewage, electrical, internet on drawings, and they send them out to you. It's a requirement before any digging is done.
Too expensive and good luck getting the owner to pay. It has to be surveyed. Any plans that exist will be wrong lol.
Crap if I ever saw a fence, like a pallet world
what a nightmare job and bull work with water, electrical, roots and rocks in the way for the posts..those are the worst jobs
+Robert Swift sprinklers are always a problem. Just when I think I know where they are another one shows up at the end of my shovel.
looks like a pallet. not for me
You are good at your job but just don’t like the fence. It spoils the look of the house. Sorry!!
Nail gun please if we used screws we will never make profit gotta keep them ft total added up by the week
Why use a cheap gate latch? No brace on top of the 2 gate posts? Gate swings out and towards the house.. not impressed
Less talk upfront and more video of the completed project, not what is almost done or left to do.
Hahahahahahahahaha! Your fence Looks like buildt from EUR-PALLETS! So ugly!
+Florian W Its not my fence. This is how the city required the fence to be built. Its a high wind zone. Evey house in this section of town has the same style fence.
Just listening to the video would have saved you from showing your ignorance...derp...post a video of the last fence you built so we can all see where your entitled opinion comes from. Since you feel you are in a position to judge you must be able to do better.
Could not see finnished product due to the link to the next vid?
How do you measure for a fence? And precisely know the number of fence pickets you need..?😬😅
@1:04 it looks like the red truck disappears (magic!!!). Anyways, nice job done on that fence.
We have River Rock buried in our ground and can be of any size from softball to 2 - 3 feet across. one hole that I dug took me 4 1/2 hours
Just saw a thing called a Mole holer or something like that on you tube, yesterday. It was for "digging" small diameter holes into the ground, but it was just a hollow pipe with some teeth on it, and a T handle at the top, and as this was twisted, it worked it's way down. A big shop vac hose was attached at the top which sucked up the dirt. The guy said it was the easiest way to dig.
that was my first "job" when i was 13-15 me and brother built fences in our neighborhood, the ones with vertical posts and 3 horizontal posts with spaces in between. the post hole digger part was horrible, and owners sometimes didnt tell us they had electrical dog fences and we snipped them a few times. made a tonnnn of money though
BRAVO.
Did u use 1.1/2" screws on boards or 1.1/4 "Thanks.
a shame about that garden, you are now looking at the fence from the inside!
You are fabulous! Wish you lived in Australia cause I would def hire you, I have soooo many jobs my hubs recovering from a bone marrow transplant and not strong enough to do now. You could live in and save money and I would feed you as I’m a great cook too, we have a pool you could swim in anytime too ha ha dreaming I know!!! Love your attention to detail such a rare thing these days. Thank you for sharing your talents and hard work. All the best for New a Year.
Somebody paid to have a fence built that looks like pallets.
who is that handsome man???
I love your videos and the work you do. Admire you much. Hardworking man and you do everything perfectly right. I will definitely hire you. Do you have videos for front 4ft fence please and thank you. From Chicago IL
How much for this job ??
you rock man nice fence.
Hi Chris. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Are you seeing any wind down there in Florida?
The Handyman
I am, I have a short video I made this morning of the wind here in Indian Shores near Tampa. It was not that bad here.
Everything looked fun except for the digging of holes for the posts lol
This was during the pre-Duck-Dynasty-beard Handyman era.
Yeah way before my youtube took off. The beard is purely for marketing on social media.
Nice job handyman , hardly recognised you without your chin whiskers , great video thanks
Handy man is the hottest kind of man
Thanks.
This is the first handyman vid I’ve seen without the beard. Was kinda shocked you haven’t had it since birth
If you want you can learn from woodprix scripts how to make it yourself.
What kind of wood is this and where do you get it? Thanks!
Hey, where did you get those gloves. How do you like them?
New subscriber to your channel. Love the content. I used to live in Sacto....'83-'87 then '90-'96. I remember very well trying to dig and hitting hardpan. As of matter of fact, I had to buy the EXACT digging bar you used. I also employed large masonry bits to drill holes through the pan and then chipped away with the bar. I was planting a Tallow tree between my driveway and my neighbor's. Lived in the Arden Manor area. Another thing I remember was the FABULOUS weather which is evident in most of your videos. Looks like you do great work and have inspired me to get back at it. Keep it up!
hard to paint and wash in between.
