I’m a cyclist and I just got HNP, now I can’t even walk without pain. This video gives me hope that maybe in a few months I can do cycling again, thanks.
How are you finding at the moment? I have Spondy grade 2. One surgeon suggested surgery but another surgeon didn't think so (same as physio, chiro). I am looking into bikes atm.
THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH! For all your help! For the help you give us that we should be getting from our doctors and therapists, but DON'T. So instead of being left to suffer like a dog left in an enclosed car, you demonstrate treatments that actually help. I couldn't get out of bed last week, this week I'm getting around thanks to you. So grateful.
Hi my chiropractor told me i shouldn't use my spin bike because of his diagnosis of spondylolisthesis. Im very early 1 l4 l5 lumbar .... what is your experience since i know you also have this. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this. I'm a OTA student, and was a serious cyclist. In Cat 2 level, and had to be pulled from clinical rotations to heal a herniated at L5S1 after a road accident. It's been a year since, and a lot has improved. Graduated from school and completed clinicals, but still haven't found a way/combination to get back to what I love- cycling. I have good disc space at l5s1 but need aggressive modified core conditioning if I ever want to get back to the type of racing/level I was once at. The video was helpful and the quote at the beginning meant a lot to me. Best wishes. Thank you both for the advice and the video. The bike I ride is an aero LIV envie advanced with an aggressive position. I think I may have to change my position up somehow- Hannah
I have a bike cruiser (Sun Baja Cruiser)...very comfortable ride and has "Fat Tires" that absorb the shocks of the road. Never have a problem with my back. Not a fast bike by no means and your riding position is almost vertical with a wide hand grip on the bars. BUT! I also have a hybrid (Giant-Cypress) and ride it once in a while. Last Saturday, I thought I would take the Cypress for a ride. About one hour and 15 minutes..came home my back was sort of stiff..did some exercises to loosen up the spine. Next morning, barely 5 minutes out of bed, went to pick up a piece of paper on the floor...heard a "pop" in my back and now have a bulging disc issue. Seeing a Chiro. In the future, I will only ride the Cruiser!
you guys are heroes 😭 I wanted to be you to make a video on what kind of physical activities you do recommend for people who have sciatica flares. I got a flare after doing squats and lunges and using the stairmaster. Help :( I'm discouraged I want to be physically active but this is hindering my motivation. Thanks
Chris G stay away from stair master it gave me horrible flare up to my disc herniation, until I'm fully recovered. ..elliptical and speed walk on the treadmill and maybe bike but make sure it's a comfortable position, hope you feel better I know it sucks
I love biking. It is very Hard for me to let it go but I have herniated disc and got sciatica nerve pain. I took epidural shot and felt better. What I should I do. Do you recommend any good bike to support my back.
@@NinucaKhupenia-ts7iv it is better thank God, a recumbent bike is a good option if you have herniated disk because it gives you back support. I stopped cycling because I got an injury in the knee , but while I did it, I never had back pain, as long as I had my back fully supported, even sometimes I used a small pillow in the back while cycling.
HELP please. I have back pain from riding an electric scooter ( standing) from road bumps. I have front suspension only 10 inch air filled tires. My brother doesnt have the problem even tough his electric scooter has 8,5 inch tires and 0 suspension.... Can you help please? I triy to take the shocks by lowering my but, bending knees but i still get pain.
Great advice. However, look at how a professional racer's posture is on, and what setup they have. Consider how many hours they do that. I have a lower lumbar herniation. The racing position on a road bicycle gives me a significant advantage. When my back hurts, I go down into the drops, and my spine is close to horizontal with the ground. Now, I don't have issues in "C" areas of my body, so I have the advantage of being able to mostly still be able to look down the road. Also, keep in mind, I generally do not curve my spine, but rather try and maintain a "J" position in relation to my spinal alignment. This has been observed in certain populations to reduce the incidence of disc degeneration in larges groups of ancient populations.
These are great videos, awesome effort by you folks. I recovered from sciatica and decided to get back to cycling, I gradually increased my duration from 10 minutes to 40 mins on a hybrid bike. How bad is carrying a backpack on bumpy roads? Would be great if we do another video on cycling or motor cycling
hi, just to offer some advice.. pick a real good backpack pading on the straps, the thin straps hurts your shoulders and also if the bulk of the weight is on the lower back of the bag you will feel the weight a lot
Can you talk more about bike styles for people with back and hip pain and sciatica? Which bike style is best for regular exercise and recreation? I am considering cruiser styles vs. comfort bs mountain bikes. Also, is a spring seat best to absorb some shock? I love your channel. It is very informative. Appreciate the demonstrations.
Julian D my friend had a disc injury and surgery. she does triathlons. I’m not a doctor but what if you Give a well fitted bike a try. Start small on the miles. work on full body muscle building. 🤷🏾♀️
Another great video guys, my partner has recently recovered from a slipped disc but has some permenant issues as a result so still has trouble from time to time, and I also have some lesser lower back issues. We both started commuting by bike recently and she was really having some trouble with her back after riding. Hopefully these tips will help ease her back into it and I'll be sure to try them out as well to hopefully keep my weird spine in check 😄
Hey guys, i have to comment on tour 10 to 15 degrees of knee flexion at the 6 o'clock position on the bike. 15 would be a minimum but just looking at your position, your seat is too high. 25 and even some get to 30, 35 degrees. The sine qua non is that there is no up and down rocking of the hips when peddling, especially at high cadence. Tight hams, etc are a huge cause, problem
I'm not flexible at all . Dr says I need to stretch hamstrings after my sciatica is better . Maybe you can do a video on how the hamstrings effect the low back . I'm very interested . Thank you
I think that the sciatica is caused by tight hamstrings that puts torque on the hips. This takes the natural curve out, straightening the lower back putting pressure on the disc and nerve. You can change this by stretching.
I had HNP, my doctor say I may not had to have a surgery to fix it, but still need to undergo some physical therapy to fix it. I wonder if I can go bicycling after it heals?
Bob and brad I had previous right lower back pain that radiated to the aide right of buttocks. Now my lower back and buttocks pain have drastically diminished. I can wall and sit without severe pain. I want your opinion on the matter. Do you think I should go to get MRI or what?
Thanks. Went for my first longish ride (20km) yesterday and today I'm sore mid-back and I'm thinking there's going to be some soreness in the beginning? I'm looking forward to a fitting when I "earn" myself my new bike but on this trash one I'm on for now I'm not willing to fit$ and really appreciate this video 👍

Great video! Brad, what aero bars do you have? Those angle up which looks helpful. Sadly I hurt my back from road biking. I was spending too much time on my aero bars which are a lot lower and it led to my QL & Psoas muscles on the right side getting extremely tight. It is so weird to me that you guys think bending the spine forward is bad and bending it back is good. The sciatic nerve runs down the BACK of the spine. If you bend back, any disc material hanging out between the vertebrae will get pinched, whereas if you bend forward the space in back between the vertebrae will open up, causing less pinching of the disc material and less pressure on the nerve.
Agreed. I’ve been a bike fitter for 20 years, bike coach for 15. I’m always amazed at how so many people assume they know everything about cycling.
