I am 62 and exercised every morning and lost 30lbs. Then I laid on a roller the wrong way and herniated a disc. It was agony for two weeks. Now it has been a month and it IS getting better. Just had an MRI and have a disc extrusion. I felt like many of the commenters. My active life was over and all that that infers. Now it is a month later and I’m able to lay on my stomach when I sleep and can lay on my back with little pain. Hang in there! If an old guy like me can get better and continue my life, then you younger ones can as well. Be patient and listen to your body. Don’t push your limits and be kind to yourself. Chances are good it will get better This is a 3 month update to my herniated disc issue. I am back to lifting and working out normally! I was careful and stopped all of that activity for a while and now it is fine. I am very careful about lifting with my legs and not my back now, but there have been times I’ve tweaked it and feel it. But even the numbness in my left shin has gone away. Of course each of us is different, but if someone had said I’d feel this good 3 months later, I would never have believed them. Hang in there and remain hopeful!
Thanks for the pep talk. I'm on day 2 of complete agony and I needed to hear that there's a way out of it. I'll likely be bedridden for my 28th birthday and I'm sitting here thinking that I'll have to quit the sport I love to ever hope to live a relatively pain-free life with all the back issues I've been having.
same bro I laid on a foam roller the wrong way and I felt it hit my nerve and it was excruciating pain. Been in agony for 2 weeks. I have an L4 L5 herniated disc.

I’ve been really depressed about my stubborn back injury, as I’m only 28 and have a lot of energy, but can’t do a lot physically anymore. I also have a very physically demanding job that has been just injuring it more, so I’ve been worried about my career. I was starting to think that I’d be stuck with the pain forever, as I roll it, use heat, stretches, exercises...but this video has given me hope again, as I pass them all! I just need to be more assertive on asking for breaks to exercise, I can do this!
Tessicat omg i feel you im 18 and i have two herniated discs. some days i feel like i’m never gonna get better but watching videos like these makes me feel better. the first step in healing is being positive and i thank you for sharing yours. we will get better! :)
Please try walking up steep inclines get your self an inversion table to hang at about 20 degrees learn to massage spasms until they are gone to help relax the back. Good Luck Deep breathing helps try this, lay on floor stretch out breath in for ten hold breath ten using diaphragm and lower stomach muscles force air out for ten, keep this posture and continue repeating for 100 times be amazed using stomach muscles to force air out. It realigns the spine.
I’m mid 20s with a herniated disk. I’ve been in extreme pain for about a week, found your videos, your stretches have reduced my pain and given me back mobility. Thank you guys so much. If I keep on it I’ll be back working out in no time!
In my 20’s I had a pretty bad case of sciatica, confirmed by MRI to be caused by a bulging disc. I didn’t have a good handle on how to properly recover and dealt with the pain for a couple of years. I thought it would never go away. The reality is that it healed on its own slowly; one day I realized I had zero pain. Don’t be discouraged! It can get better
@@useraccount1187 I didn’t follow up with an MRI - I considered myself “fully healed” when I had absolutely no pain. It was something that gradually got better. It was also hard (agonizing) to sit down and I would have to arch my back aggressively, but one day I remember sitting down and realizing I had no pain and that perhaps months had gone by without noticing it. This was after 2-3 years of sciatic pain. I have since been able to pursue flexibility/mobility and have achieved palms on the floor with legs straight, no issues running or jumping or squatting - but I also have been very mindful about living a healthy and active lifestyle as well
@@adamrosner7736 You can bend and touch ground with palms? That's really great to hear. I'm almost 2yr after initial injury. Not yet healed, but I feel that its getting better every month.
This video literally saved my back and leg. God bless you guys. I started doing that floor stretch up stomache down, and instantly my leg started feeling relieved. Like you guys said, "it's like a miracle." On the first stretch it took so much pain in my leg away. I'm excited to see what happens when I continue doing this everyday. I'm so grateful for your videos! Keep up the good work. You are helping so many!
I have going to a local PT for sciatic nerve pain. Some of the home exercises they suggested for me to do came from that book. It has helped tremendously in the 5 to 6 weeks I have had a huge improvement.
Found out I have a large disc protrusion with narrowing spine and thought I was facing surgery. Surgeon said my body is healing itself! Thank God. This video helped convince me too, so many yes’s!
You guys have saved me so much pain, and have helped me get rid of 2 herniated discs. much. I can't express how greatful I am to your channel. Really guys, your videos have pretty much saved me.
These guys are amazing. I went from excruciating pain and numbness to some pain and numbness slowly residing. Just from that one exercise laying on stomach and pelvis down pushing arms up . Amazing
I watched several of your videos and found out I had sciatica. I had previously gotten some shots of hyaluronic acid in my knees but it didn't help at all. The first video of Bob and Brad's I saw said to put a bolster pillow behind your back when you are sitting. I actually sit quite a bit during the day because I'm at my computer. After months of dealing with this extreme pain up and down my leg and especially on the upper part, my pain was virtually gone within 48 hours! No more taking Advil and ibuprofen all day long! I'll try this new exercise and I know I will feel 100% in no time at all! Thanks, Bob and Brad!
I've been watching your videos since the beginning of the year when my back started to hurt. 1st diagnostic was dégénérative discs of L4-L5 & L5-S1. After being pain free during the first 2 weeks of march this yr, back hurt again and this time the pain goes down from the buttocks till my legs & knee. Turns out I have herniated disk & a possibility of sciatica. Your videos been so helpful with your infos, advices & some exercices we can do. I still have to see my neuro surgeon in May but hope to be better by then. Thanks again for these very useful videos guys! 👍🏻
I would love to know what it's like to be completely pain free. I had back trauma 3 yrs ago. Had to give up exercising all together a yr ago because of the pain. Nothing helps it.
@@johnnyrodriguez276 no, unfortunealty not yet.....had a set back 6 months ago where i hurt it again. Hey I'm on month 5 with pain. Yesterday I got a mri and found out I have a slight left disc protrusion on my l5 how did u make your pain go away and how long for recovery
I cannot believe that i've been in agony for the last two weeks with what I came to think was a bulging disk, and I came across your videos, did your technique, and it immediately feels a million times better! I live in Indonesia so getting the back seen to would have been a long slow and frustrating process, what a relief, thank you guys
Queenie x I've been taking regular pain relief, and seeing my own physio once a week. Lately I've been performing some of the advanced exercises suggested by both Brad, Bob and my own physio to treat my resistant leg symptoms.
You're 30. I am too. You're young enough to where your body can repair and heal itself, don't give up, I've been trying yoga and stretches I find on here for a few days now and can feel a big difference. I refuse to give up cause I'm so stubborn and I definitely don't wanna be an old man riding a wheelchair to get around. Don't give up.
Strongly agree with this video-- I had some very intense sciatica this past fall, and #s 2,3,4,6,7 were all true for me. It took a bit more than two months, but I was able to recover almost 100%. Now I just have very occasional light pain. I don't think I could have done it without seeing a physical therapist in person, but your videos were very helpful also. Back pain can be so debilitating and I am thankful every day that I was able to recover from mine.
This was really insightful! I have been recovering from back pain and decided I needed to rehydrate as I wasn't drinking nearly enough water. I noticed day 1 I started feeling worse. The information about the spine losing and then reabsorbing at night makes sense.
and how did that affect you on the long run ? I am 24 and I had an MRI about three months ago only to discover that I have disc bulging. It really affected my mental health because I keep thinking about how it will affect my life in the next 10 years, 20 years, ...

Had an epidural nerve root block strongly recommend this. Get well guys feeling ya pain. Stay positive please 🙏!!!! You have options.
Thank you for this video! I currently have symptoms of a disc bulge and I meet this criteria for likely healing myself. Two years ago, I had a huge herniation and did not have 4 of these I could say yes to (the scariest thing was NO TIME WITHOUT PAIN! Literally 24/7 pain and had to drug myself to get any sleep--Gabapentin was my BFF!) so I now feel more confident in the decision I made at the time to have surgery. I'm watching more and more of your videos to incorporate more exercises to try to suck that bulge back in!
Thank God I got all the 7 yesses. I'm 19 years old and got an herniated disc from weighted pistol squats. Looking back at the stupid 17 year old me, it's easy to say what I should and should not have done, but I just wanted to look cool doing 30+ kg pistol squats without the bare minimum ankle mobility (had to do them with heel supports) and even less hamstring mobility (I couldn't keep the opposite leg straight). I'll start to read this book today, 23/12/2021, and do the exercises, while I update how my back feels.
I have all the opposite signs I have pain all the time, no pain while sitting but while standing less pain in the morning and worsen afterwards it's good while inactive and gets worse with motion pain is below the knee in the side of the calfs
Thank you, thank you, thank you , Bob and Brad, for these videos. They’ve been soooo helpful, especially since I’m unable to afford $40 copay for PT. You guys rock!🙏👍❣️
I have horrible pain. I’m waiting on approval from insurance for an MRI. I went to two neurosurgeons, the first looked at some xrays said my back was great no disk issues. Second one points out a couple tiny spots in my lumbar area. I have All the symptoms for DDD. I’m a yes on 7/7. 10 months of PT didn’t help. Hopefully I can fix myself this time through exercise and avoid another lengthy lay off from work. Keep up the good work.

Many thanks, I've been looking for "which lumbar disc is related sciatic pain" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Sonictoria Stupefying Smasher - (do a search on google )? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to stopping your sciatica without the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my neighbour got cool results with it.
In one video you said to try putting a bolster pillow behind your back when you sit. I've been doing that for a couple days and I actually feel activity in my lower back it's not painful it actually feels really good and I know that that's the key to healing. Since I have to sit so much every day, I'm thrilled that this is actively healing my sciatica! Almost pain-free after 72 hours and months of continuous aches and pains in my legs. Better advice than I got from the Orthopedics doctor I went to..
Happy that I have all 7 good signs , Wish you all . we can overcome this pain 👍 ur videos so amazing for sciatica. Decompression by hanging from bar or doing shoulder dips helps a lot
airchairairflare I have all 7 signs, it’s been 3 days since initial pain, still quite tender in the morning and certain positions, stopped exercising, how are you
@@kieranbutler3323 I've noticed great improvement this week. Last 3 days I've walked more than 30 km ( 10 km each day ) almost without any discomfort. Sciatica is still present, but its minor, and after long walks or after prolonged sitting, and it dissapieres after lying on stomach. I try to walk 15 - 30 minutes a few times a day, then do some decompression with chair or with pull up bar, do 15 McKenzies and lie down on stomach. Rinse and repeat every 1.5 - 2 hours. I sleep on my stomach as well. Hopefully my back will heal in a few weeks, so that I don't wreck neck sleeping like this.
airchairairflare great to hear, when did you first feel pain? I was lifting in the gym and woke up with pain! What triggered your pain! Do you do any gym work
@@kieranbutler3323 This is how it happened for me as well. Too much deadlifts, and then in the middle of the night sorness turned to pain. Tried to stretch ql, hip flexors, gluteus, releases with ball...etc,initially for 2-3 weeks and it only aggravated it. After that stopped all stretching and focused on lying on stomach as much as possible, which decreased sciatica symptoms. After hour or so I stoud up and walked around in order to flush junk stuff in my lower back. Also avoided sitting as much as possible, and doing hip hindge instead of bending. It looks like it works. Keep in mind, I was able to do pull ups from day 1, but bending, standing, even lying down on my back hurted( and it still does ). I think this is 4th or 5th week since I changed rehab program, and Its so far with promising results. Edit: I don't do any gym work currently. Only controlled pull ups, and push ups once a week. I've read that combination of lying down ( for me on stomach ), standing and walking will heal you.
Thank you! This video gives me hope! I have been nervous and anxious about my situation for a while. I am 22 years old and have herniation at L4and5, I even considered surgery lol. But this gives me hope and I feel a lot better now.
This video has convinced me that I am on the road to recovery. For I can lay on my stomach, and extend myself to the fullest point several of times. Furthermore the pain does hit me when I stand up after being seated. Plus the pain for the most part doesn't go below my knees, but for several of weeks it did. And when I walk back & fourth the pain hits me, but yet if I push through it the pain goes away(with me being able to walk pain free or almost pain free for several minutes). So like I said before I will be healed without surgery, and thanks to you guys I now know this.
I don't care as long as I can see what you're doing but I like when you explained it I like to hear what you're saying listen I want to know if my sciatica is ever going to go away I've had it for almost 4 months now when I do your exercises they really seemed to work but I want to know exactly what to do what exercises to do everyday to centralize the pain
I herniated my disc back in OCT 2021, rarely do I have back pain. But occasionally depending on position it can get aggravated… however almost daily, I have sciatica isolated to outside of ankle/lower calf. Worsens with pro longed standing or walking. However other postures seated or laying relieves it.
What do you mean here exactly when you say "heal"? Do you mean only alleviating pain or alleviating pain AND helping to repair the disc herniation to the point where the disc is back inside the vertebrae?
Referring to your point about being taller in the morning. As an experiment, I once had mercury injected into my spine to help with back pain. It worked but as a side effect I was 7ft tall in hot weather and only 4ft tall when it was cold

I personally have healed from sleeping correctly I was under the impression my sleeping patterns were only during a sciatic injury then I realized it is the way I have to sleep daily injury or not..this completely took my pain away before it was good days and bad days where my legs hurt really bad...so I was sleeping inconsistently only pain I'm still having is pain behind my left ankle near my heel but it's on and off....I heard it's also from the sciatic nerve. Thanks so much
this has helped me immensely thank you's guys. my only problem. is now that I have localized pain I'm not sure how to get rid of it. it is a sharp jabbing pain -.- hopfully it dissipates.
Thank you guys. This was a very informative video and helped motivate my process. I am 25 and have my L5-S1 herniation compressing my right sciatic nerve. I have had it for 5 months but it has reduced to the point where I am good on all of the factors you mentioned. I just really hope it is possible to fully recover.
I have pain, numbness, tingling, cramps. Had cortisone, rizotomies, physio, chiro, remedial massage. I'm so, so tired of it. I do yoga, walk 7kms a day, meditate...10 years now.
You just described my situation to a "t". I got better with some back strengthening exercises, stretching, and hanging from a pull-up bar (and just doing pull-ups).
I had a herniated disc before in 2014.. Its back again. It took 3 months to go away on its own the last time. I hope it goes away on its own again this time. Its been 30 days already.
@@cellkingsouthafrica3765 I feel great now. I had a 3 level laminectomy(s). On April 6th of this year. The surgery went great. 6 weeks after surgery I was ready to return to work. I was advised not to bend, twist, or lift. I didnt do anything like thst after surgery but I was bending down to pick up things thst I would drop like pens, papers, or meds. Eventually my back started to ache/hurt a good deal. I honestly thought I had messed up my back again. So I stopped bending and stayed in bed on my days off. The pain went away after about 2 weeks. Now I feel great and pain free. Mu neurosurgeon did a great job. I just need to be careful with my back. I think if it messes up again I probably need to have my vertebrae fused. If there isnt enough disk left. But I did learn that there are artificial discs that are being used now to fix/replace the real ones. I don't know how long those have been around but its good to know if they are an option.
Hi there Bob & Brad, Great videos guys. Between you two & a host of others I have learnt so much. I herniated my L5 S1 at the age of 20. I'm now 30 and have been working on it on & off for the past 7 years (at lot more in the past two years) I had a very bad flare up of sciatica in 2016 going all the way down the left leg into the foot. I have been relatively pain free since then, without ever having surgery. I still have a good range of motion. I still occasionally have pain in the low back and some residual pain in left leg. I just want to ask what your opinions are on the seated pelvic tilt and what would be your advice on how to keep the discs hydrated throughout the day? Many thanks Norfolk Enchance
I have to agree with your slogan, you guys are the best! Have had trouble with sciatica since I was 14. Now 33 and not being as active ( driving 3+h a day ) is killing me. I don’t care who thinks I look stupid swinging my legs outside my ute in between site visits. Great job guys! Edit, can you get someone to level the 2 cupboard doors to the left. HAHA!
I have been following your videos on the herniated disk as i have one going on a year now. I have the book and have been following it. For all watching what has helped me the most is stop sitting! I catch the bus to work and stand on the bus, get off and walk 30 minutes to work. I have a standing desk at work and do my excersizes when needed, sit a little for short periods only. My problem is a pain in my ankle that just wont go, any thoughts in that anyone?
Gavin Holmes just keep doing the cobra aka Mckenzie protocol. The ankle side pain from the L5 herniation can be the last thing to go. But keep doing what your doing and make sure to do the cobras consistently 3 to 4 times a day everyday. It can take months but stick with it and even though the ankle pain will take a long time (sometimes 2 years) it will heal. Also I've had success with patients adding a inversion table once a day with the Mckenzie protocol or this other device on sitanddecompress.com. Good luck and stick with it even if all other symptoms are gone except that ankle pain. God bless.
Hello. Thank you for your videos. I have had a herniated disc 4 years ago now it has happened again. I work in a nursery school so i am always bending down. So i think this is the cause. I have been out of work for 5 months and in a lot of pain. I can't sit for very long. I go to physio and this really helps me. (If you get a good physio). They correct posture and get you to stretch. They push you to your limit. But it helps. Love your videos as they are helping me aswell. Thanks for the advice on the book. I have a l5/s1 herniation. Which left me unable to walk or go to the toilet. Its a very slow recovery but hopefully i will be pain free again. Thanks again for your videos.
Two months ago I lifted lawn mower out of back of truck - - my back froze. I drove home, but so uncomfortably. As the weeks went by nerve which was being compressed by L4 herniation was so painful - - beyond what I wanted to deal with. What helped? Medication (oxycodin type pills), but also a TENS machine (cheap on Amazon, easy to use). It did not seem to help, but only agitate the area at first, but as I continued to use it the sensations began to dissipate. Now I'm 99% pain free and am walking and working again.
Why did you ask that? I forgot I made this comment. But isn't the video about herniated discs, and I said that in my write up. Why did you ask that after having read and presumably watched the video?

I was starting to think that I’d be stuck with the pain forever, as I roll it, use heat, stretches, exercises...but this video has given me hope again, as I pass them all! I just need to be more assertive on asking for breaks to exercise, I can do this!

@@adamrosner7736 did you notice that you were fully healed after getting another mri screening ? Or do you just feel fully healed ?

I have going to a local PT for sciatic nerve pain. Some of the home exercises they suggested for me to do came from that book. It has helped tremendously in the 5 to 6 weeks I have had a huge improvement.

Walking does help sciatica but you have to persevere because you may feel stiff to begin with but it gets better.
Not for me. It's the opposite. VERY frustrating. I start off fine and then massive pain.
Yeah walking is the main trigger for me too.

After that stopped all stretching and focused on lying on stomach as much as possible, which decreased sciatica symptoms.

I feel great now.
6/7 I'm gonna hold out hope. Thanks guys.
Hi there Bob & Brad,
Great videos guys.
Many thanks

God bless.

Hi kathy, have u recovered or still going through the same pain,I have l5 s1 so just trying to gain your experience
I have the exact same thing. Did u recover if so how long did it take
Two months ago I lifted lawn mower out of back of truck - - my back froze.
Did you have herniated disk?
Why did you ask that? I forgot I made this comment. But isn't the video about herniated discs, and I said that in my write up. Why did you ask that after having read and presumably watched the video?
How are you feeling now?
@@Vengeance0117 Hi. Numerous injuries...Back is stiffer, I think herniating my disc has caused loss of flexibility, unfortunately. Strength is back though.
@@LuvNWutIDoin are you in pain? Can you sit and sleep comfortably?
