    A suggestion…
Just started watching your channel, and live in New Zealand. Great content in your vids.
I have been fishing for over 50 years, both in boats and off the rocks but my passion is rock fishing.
There are scary, life threatening risks being taken in this vid. Watch an area for a good 15 minutes before fishing off it. If the waves are breaking onto the ledge you are going to fish off, or look like they may in time, don’t go onto it. An outgoing tide doesn’t mean it will necessarily get safer either - the wave amplitude, length and crest can get worse on incoming or outgoing tide. It was pretty obvious even early on in the vid that swells were cresting over the rock.
Emotions play a very big part in fishing, and it is easy to get caught up in the moment. No fish is worth dying for. Always be watching the sea.
You are a good guy, a superb chef, and produce great vids. Let’s make sure they keep coming for a long time into the future.
    Be safe. Thank you.

Taku, just some advice on plugging for monsters off the rocks. I do the same out here on the big island of Hawaii. Get yourself a pair of rock spike tabis. Gamakatsu makes a really good one that's spike/felt bottom but they only sell it in Japan. Also, you probably want a pair of long reach needle nose pliers for dehooking. What happened to you could've been way worse. I had a friend who got the treble stuck in his hand while still attached to the fish. It was a big bluefin trevally and it was still kicking while attached to him. It's not a bad idea to carry a first aid kit with your tackle. For antiseptic I like to use antibacterial hand soap with benzalkonium chloride. It's the same stuff surgeons use to prep incisions. It wont burn you like other antiseptics. And lastly I know you have a deal with Okuma but according to the Morning Tide Fishing guys (Brooksy, Briggsy, Cavy) they ssy you have to have the best of the best when it comes to fishing GT's, any weakness in your equipment will show. That's why they fish Zenaq and other top Japanese rod makers. Cheers from Hawaii bro! Stay safe and keep the videos coming!

Yeah okuma gear aint cutting it... The best of the best is required for GT, Shimano Stella, Daiwa Saltiga, Zenaq etc.

Dude glad you’re ok… I always wonder what would happen to UA-camr’s that go out by themselves.. I’m sure most have someone they know that know where they are or are going to be.. but it’s scary to think that you could fall and not even be incapacitated.. just to injured enough to climb that rock face.. glad your good bro keep it up.. love my Taku Tuesdays. ❤

Wow, that video sounds intense! It's incredible how a fishing trip can take unexpected turns. On a different note, if you're into outdoor adventures, I highly recommend checking out the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series. It's a reliable power backup solution with features like massive capacity, fast recharging, and waterproof technology. Perfect for camping and RV trips!

I'm glad you got that wound taken care of, some people don't know it could be deadly. A Texan fisherman died this summer after getting poked by a gafftop catfish and he didn't get it disinfected. I carry a small first aid kit for that reason.

You know, as I'm watching this video, I am convinced that the haters who said you were too small and weak to reel those fish in have no idea what they're talking about. Every time you lost a fish with the exception of the one that basically attacked you with the hook, it was because the line snapped. That has absolutely nothing to do with your physical strength or stature. At any rate, I love this video and I hope you continue making these.

Being that it’s the 2nd time you’ve been there, I’m so shocked at how unprepared you are to fish that location. Equipment to easier land the fish, a fish clamp so it’s easier to de-hook the fish.

May I make a small highly divisive suggestion?
Switch to a Left hand retrieve reel. You seem to be Right-handed, small guys like us need every advantage we can get with big powerful fish. Fight with your strong arm, reel with the weak, and use your legs to power the fish.
What was that first fish? Do you know? Looked kinda like a Cubera Snapper to me. And I would have called that a perfect release. You win the battle even with a broken rod! Crazy!

Taku, I am wore out just watching this show, man talk about ups and downs, that was so cool. I saw the kingfish you got on the other show and that was awesome, then you get the hook in the leg here and almost got washed away to become crab food and then landing that, that was so great. My wife and I have been watching Outdoor Mitsuki and she is turning out like you, that little one gets it. Okay, I gotta settle down here, I am so stoked for you and Jocelyn. My wife and I were just out the other day and had a great trip for rockfish and then seeing you pull this off, man what a cool week already. Hope your leg heals with no infection, that will be a great story in itself. Thanks for a great show.

    Great content, bro.
As a Niuean living in Brizzy, I also fish.
I have a saying, "Never take a knife to a gunfight."
I get laugh at over here on the fishing charters until I land mine.
    I'm not a sports fisherman, I'm after a feed.
    I use 80lb braid and 200lb 9 foot trace, and that's with a Saragosa 2000.
How I'd love to get my hands on a Stella...Nice fish, too. Well done.

Great video, Taku! Congrats on your first landbased GT!
I few things I’d suggest for big game fishing off the rocks would be:
    1. To wear some cleats or rock shoes with spikes on the bottom. They’ll save you from slipping off the rocks and are just as important as a life jacket.
    2. Wearing an EPIRB or some sort of portable personal locator beacon and/or a satellite communication device. If you ever get washed in and dragged out to sea, it will save your life to have one (or better yet, both!). These safety devices are really important when fishing off the rocks by yourself in remote locations!
    3. Using the best of the best fishing gear. Okuma have some high-end reels and rods in the PE8 or 10 models that you can use. For landbased, 8’3” to 10’ rods are ideal as they have enough length to help you stop the fish from ledging/reefing you. Any shorter, you won’t have enough leverage to stop the fish going under the rocks and busting you off on structure. It also can be more dangerous with a shorter rod as you’ll need to get very close to the edge of the ledge to stop the fish from diving under the ledge/rocks. It’s also more difficult to land a fish safely with a shorter rod too for the same above reasons.
    4. Having the correct drag setting to start the fight is vital. I like to run mine 1-2 360 degree revolutions loose from being completely locked. Most landbased GT and big Kingfish fishermen run their drags at 10kg as a minimum and on average between 15kg to 20kg drag setting to start the fight. This is dependent on your body weight and strength levels though, so please choose a drag setting you can handle, just try not to have the drag too loose at the start of the fight. The reason for the heavy drag setting is to stop the fish from diving immediately into structure. It also allows you to quickly tire the fish out and pump it into land before it can get its breath back for another big run.
    5. Most GT fishermen run Nylon Shock Leader around 150lb-220lb in strength. It absorbs shock of big fish runs and will also allow you to run heavier drag without feeling like you will fall in. Nylon shock leader is also abrasive resistant and because of its stretchiness and shock absorption qualities it also helps with tiring big fish out.
    Hope the above suggestions help!
Looking forward to seeing you catch an even bigger monster off the rocks! 🤙🏽

      @Eric-zs6rd 6 місяців тому +3

All good points. Taku is a great chef but he's just not as skilled at fishing as the pure fishing youtubers. He makes equipment errors, he gets so excited he just stands there and pulls and cranks as hard as he can without looking to control the direction of the rod or watching where the line is going like into props and rocks and stuff. Even when hes fighting and goes to pump the rod he was just jerking and cranking at the same time like he was still trying to set the hook or something.

    • @808340
      @808340 6 місяців тому +1

@@Eric-zs6rd That's a great point about him pulling and cranking as hard as he can as soon as he hooks up. As others have said, set the drag first with the anticipation of going for big game. Almost all the videos of him fishing he immediately reaches for the drag and cranks it down tighter and starts boosting. Rather than making the rod work for him, he's trying to overpower the fish.

Hey, Taku! First, these videos are getting more and more awesome!
I also wanted to comment on that first fish, the blacksaddled coral trout. It's a species of grouper, and like most groupers, they are highly delicious to eat, but one has to be careful. Like the other members of this family, they mainly feed on other fish, who in turn feed off algae in the reefs that contain the organisms which cause ciguatera poisoning. Many reef fish species are liable to carry the ciguatoxin. Just wanted to throw in my small dose of knowledge.

Glad you’re ok. I would’ve guessed closer to 50lbs than 30 lbs. Hope y’all stay safe and God Bless!

People have stories to tell about their fishing events. Taku, this episode is one hecka story that you can share with your children's children. And when they don't believe you, have them watch this video.
There is a saying that "Bad luck comes in 3s". On that first fish you landed: (1) your rod broke, (2) you got hooked on the leg, (3) that huge wave reclaimed that fish.

Man ..that was heart pumping action. Been in that situation catching big fish. If you want to keep the fish than quickly despatch the fish before taking out the lure for safety. If you want to release than quickly and carefully remove the lure with a pliers rather than trying to lift the fish which can end up in your situation. Anyway cheers Taku for the action packed video. Keep doing what you do man. Cheers

48” 200-250# steel leader. Period. We use that for Cubera Snapper in Baja when fishing the rocks from boat or shore . These monsters aren’t “line shy” This is the way .
