  • 1. Dig out a trench where you culvert will go.
    2. Grade it out by compacting dirt down.
    2. Dump gravel in trench and spread it out nice and even.
    3. Lay the culvert on the gravel
    4. Do whatever couplings are needed and do 'em right!
    4. Fill voids where culvert is not making contact with the gravel below it.
    5. Put gravel on top.
    6. Put dirt on top of that and compact it.

Ribbed poly pipes ( plastic) with a smooth bore have a lot of advantages over steel pipes , eg tougher , wont rust , smooth bore helps prevent sediment build up inside, probably lighter too.

Great job. It’s hard being the camera man and the star of the show while actually doing the job of two men at the same time.

You need some type of rip rock on the culvert ends so the mud doesn’t end up collapsing into your culvert.

Was this for a drive or road? You always should have a minimum of 1 foot of granular fill over the culvert to get HS-20 loading. Also you never use the 'roll over' method for compaction. Get a vibrating plate compactor and do it right in 4" lifts! I've seen so many culverts that were squashed by trucks compacting them with their tires! One was a very large aluminum plate box culvert that the foreman got in a hurry and had his backhoe operator drive over it to compact and it fell thru the 30,000$ culvert! No happy times for them...

I would not recommend using up all 3 ribs on the coupler, I think on the 3 ribs of the coupler it is supposed to attach with one on each side and the middle rib adds some flexion margin for seasonal ground shifts.

Actually if you look and the square end ribs of the culverts.. when placed together they form that middle rib in the three ribs on the band... so the outer ribs grab a full rib on each culvert. When tightened down properly those plates the bolts go thru will be almost touching and the pipe will not have any flexture in it at the joint.

@@tubedude54 the whole thing looks like it could fold up at the slightest bit of pressure....even from just driving the dozer over it . I am watching this to look at how to avoid such a thing as I'm having to replace a culvert that split in half at the joint . I'd feel better if that coupler was 3 times as long hahaha

@@skidfrog Please do not do it the way this guy does... I haven't watched any other of his vids, if he has any, but this video shows he doesn't know what he is doing! I suspect he worked a few months with a firm installing culverts and decided he could do it on his own. He purchased a used backhoe and took on jobs I assume. The very first thing you must do is make a stable compacted bottom by digging out all loose soil and tree roots to about 1 foot below the grade your pipe will be at. You then place crushed stone in and use a vibratory hand compactor to make grade... and no a compactor is not the backhoe bucket! You use an optical or laser level to get grade and adjust the stone till it is correct. 'Correct' means that it has the proper slope for the size pipe you are using. (I engineered, sized and oversaw the installation of thousands of culverts over 30 yrs) When a bottom is prepared correctly and you put the culvert in the hole you will see no gaps beneath the culvert. You then place crushed stone around the pipe in 4-6" lifts and use the compactor to set it. You continue to place the stone in lifts till you get a MINIMUM of 1 foot (will vary with the size of the culvert) of compacted stone over the pipe BEFORE you drive ANYTHING over it! I hope this guy has learned something since he made this video. I forgot to tell you your instincts are correct about the band... if you look at each end of the culverts he joined they have 4 square rings on them and his band only has room to attach to 3 rings... He needed a longer band that would at least hold to 2 rings on each piece of the pipe.

@@tubedude54 Thanks for answering !......I like your reminders a lot ; the issue with my particular field ditch is that the water level is about a foot or more above the current washed out culvert pipe in the spring thaw.....and the ditch overflows to about a 100 foot width and more......but only for these 2 or 3 weeks and then the water stabilizes about 3 feet lower through the rest of the year. I have plenty of two-handed sized boulders to reinforce and contain the whole thing properly once I dig it all out and start over !

@@skidfrog Skid... I don't know where you live but you should check with your county drainage board before you do any work in a ditch or waterway. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can get ahold of the state Soil and Conservation Service and they might even design your structure for you free of charge. If it lies in a regulated drain you can even get the county to install it for you for free since it is the counties responsibility at that point!! Good luck!

SRM Solar radiation management Geoengineering Was your "home" built by items that did not come from natural habitats? I think he is building an Earthship there. With all the plants that will probably be grown indoors (ALL YEAR) some natural life will be replaced. The owner of the house will probably be avoiding driving to the supermarket every few days to buy fruits and vegetables therefore not polluting as much with frequent driving.
