Dangerfield was married twice to Joyce Indig, a singer. They married on October 3, 1951, divorced in 1961, remarried in 1963, and divorced again in 1970. They had two kids (son Brian Roy and daughter Melanie Roy-Friedman). From 1993 until his death in 2004, Dangerfield was married to Joan Child, whom he met in 1983 at a flower shop she owned in Santa Monica, California.

Dangerfield was the man. The album No Respect came out when I was just a little kid, and I memorized it. All of his Tonight Show appearances with Carson were golden. Johnny could never keep it together. Dangerfield will always be in my top 10, along with Steve Martin, Doug Stanhope, Dave Atell, Bill Burr, John Cleese, Jim Gaffigan, Steven Wright, and probably someone else.

In 1978 when I was 20 years old, I visited LA and I went to the Johnny Carson show and Rodney was a guest! After the show, I went out by the back parking lot and waited for the celebrities to leave and he came out in a VW bug and rolled down the window and I said, Hey, I’m from New York! And he yelled back in that unmistakable voice, that’s your problem! 😊

I had the extreme pleasure to meet Rodney about six months before he passed. I worked the door at a comedy club and he walked in with his significant other (I'm not sure if it was his wife or not). The place was packed, and one of the comics spotted Rodney and started to slow clap. Within seconds, everyone in the bar was clapping and cheering for him. "Who are they clapping for?" he asked, and his lady friend said, "It's for you, Rodney." His eyes welled up with tears and he blew everyone kisses as I led them to the celebrity table inside the showroom. After the show, as he was leaving, I pulled him aside, shook his hand and said, "I normally don't get like this with celebrities, but 'Back to School' was the movie that helped my little brother and I bond when we were kids. We must have watched it a thousand times and it gave us so much joy." He paused a moment, gripped my hand, and said, "Bless you. Bless you." I was devastated when he passed. There will never be another like him.

There were so few people who could sit down with Johnny and run the show while the host just sits back and laughs. If Johnny truly liked you he would let you do most anything and just roll with it. You can tell Johnny truly loved Rodney Dangerfield and probably could have sat with him for two or three hours and just let him tell nonstop jokes, and Rodney could have done it.

You have to notice from the constant sweating and jumpiness in his 70's - 80's appearances that he was partaking in cocaine regularly, esp before going onstage for that boost of energy and confidence. I'm not judging or bashing him, it's just a fact...the drugs helped him get into the "Rodney" character. Watch his very old videos from the 60's...his delivery in calmer and slower paced (no coke). Robin Williams, John Belushi and dozens of other fast paced maniacal comics/actors (James Woods) did the same thing. Easy access when you have $ and assistants that will run errands for you at the drop of a hat.

I love your reaction, Maddy, but he had some problems. He started in comedy later in life than most do and used his neuroticism as the basis for his act. The tugging on his tie and the self depredation (I get no respect) were his trademarks early on. As he got older and more famous he began to abuse drugs: Alcohol, weed and particularly cocaine. I've heard a lot of comics who idolized him talk about how he was constantly tweaked. I suspect that's where the always sweating comes in. Having said that, I think he was brilliant and one of a kind. He gave multiple generations so much laughter and joy.

  • @mojorider8455

he was great in "Caddyshack" and "Back to School". It's funny, he always seems to have had this thing about the upper class snobbery since he himself had grown up poor and had an unhappy childhood. It's reflected in both of those movies.

In answer to your question at the end: the sweating and nervousness are part of the act, though you can tell he started bombing a little on the couch and it rattled him a bit. You'll notice Johnny laughs extra hard at the next joke and quickly threw to break to help him recover (part of why he was such a legendary host).

Great reaction, Maddy! Rodney was one of a kind. I loved to watch him on the Tonight Show. He would do his stand up routine and then proceed to the couch for discussion with Johnny. In reality, it was just a continuation of his act. Johnny would act as the setup guy and Rodney would just continue with one joke after another.

From what I've seen in the past, Rodney will wipe sweat off his forehead maybe once when onstage. The studio lights can be brutal to some people. In 1974, The Tonight Show was on for 90-minutes until around 1982. Many of the old time great entertainers were on the show when Johnny Carson was the host. I still miss Johnny. He would do different characters sometimes. You may want to check out Johnny doing Art Fern and the Tea Time Movies skit on his show. That started around 1974 and is absolutely hilarious!

    Ok, Maddy.
The woman sitting next to Rodney in the video is Doris Day. She is a legendary singer and actress who spent the majority of her life speaking out for and taking care of animals. Which is why you see her punch Rodney in the arm when he makes a joke about them. But it was in good fun. Doris Day starred with screen legend Rock Hudson in a few movies, and they were great friends until he died of AIDS in the 1985.
If you started a movie channel you can watch Rodney in the movies he made titled,
    CADDYSHACK,
    BACK TO SCHOOL,
and the animated version himself as ROVER DANGERFIELD.
As for Doris Day and Rock Hudson, they starred together in PILLOW TALK.
Now, you must checkout the comedian Rodney discovered at his club Dangerfield's. His name is Sam Kinison. The clip you want is about Marriage and World Hunger. And Sam also appears on th Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in a hilarious skit tgat will give some background on his life. Unfortunately, we lost Sam in a car wreck in 1992.
    Keep going.

Off-topic, but Johnny Carson was a great talkshow host. He had a lot of funny comedians on from that era, and he was pretty funny himself. As far as Rodney Dangerfield, every time I watched him, he always would adjust his tie and pat his face with his handkerchief. I don’t know if it was part of the skit or not, but it was common place.

I'm glad you noticed how relevant those jokes would be today and it's good you're not afraid to mention it 😅

The sweating is caused by a combination of things. What you mentioned, plus, men's suits used to be made with thicker, heavier fabrics. One result is they didn't wrinkle as easily, compared to today's lighter suits.

And the cocaine he used. Watched hundreds of Carson shows and the only guests I've seen with horrible sweating issues were him and Robin Williams. What do they have in common besides being funny as hell?...an huge appetite for cocaine. Let's be real here.

I remember that he put out a music video once in the 80’s. ‘Rapping Rodney’ was probably the name, it was the chorus. Mainly reading his jokes to music. ‘I was an ugly kid, I never had any fun.’ (No respect, no respect). ‘One time they took me to a dog show, and I won!’ (No respect, no respect)

This was awesome! I've seen several UA-cam reactors react to him, whether or Johnny Carson or not, but I've never seen this episode of Johnny Carson, so the jokes are different hear! He's famous for always adjusting his tie & saying "I don't get no respect". He has a bunch of movies, but his most famous ones are Caddyshack (with OG SNL actors Bill Murray & Chevy Chase), Easy Money & Back To School. U should check out his movies for a good laugh

As far as I know he was happily married twice and has two childeren. VD indeed stands for Venereal Disease, a much-used expression at that time. The reason why he is always fidgety and sweating so much is because he has to keep his mind constantly sharp in order to make those fast jokes. More than 50 years of staying at the top as a comedian is truly a great accomplishment. Please do more reaction videos on Rodney Dangerfield

Rodney started as a cab driver and honed his act in 3 -10 minute rides. The better the act, the better the tip.

Norm is consciously imitating Rodney when he comes out and talks about the crowd (as in his Conan Battle Axe video)...
