Heeb & Shiksa: Why did Howard Stern nuke his legacy?

- We dissect Howard Stern's descent from cultural icon to broken weirdo. What happened? What were the incentives? Who are the players? Is Howard even AWARE that he nuked his fan base & legacy? And is there any hope he wakes up to reality?
I started listening to Stern in the early 90's. I listen to the show now on YT but I scroll past the new stuff and only listen to the old stuff. Sad what the show became.
The Eric the Midget marathons are the best...
Same here
Love this breakdown. I listen to old Howard clips all the time, Artie era was my favorite. I used to think Arties attempt shook Howard and was the real beginning point of the change. It just wasnt noticeable yet. Thanks for the entertainment.
Yep, both Christina & I agree that the Artie era was the best, esp post-Sirius.
Howards change started long before Artie left. In fact, it started before his move to Sirius.
@@EricONeil.BETH?
That "Summit" happened right after ETM died. In fact, Jewel played a dedicated song to ETM on the show...maybe on same day as "summit"
I’ve never heard of this show before but this was really well done and very interesting, great job I’m gonna subscribe 😊
Great breakdown guys! I like the comedic angle of QF and Radio Gunk, but really enjoyed your more clinical approach/analysis of the decline of Stern.
Thank you!
Good breakdown and discussion. I would just personally map everything you're saying one decade earlier. Howard Stern's glory days were approximately 1990-2001; in other words, the Jackie Era. Jackie's departure is the beginning of the end for me, because that was the beginning of "cast members" becoming people who were already fans of the show, and were therefore less willing to be irreverent and self-effacing. There was now a built-in reverence for Howard, exactly the opposite of the classic Jackie era. It doesn't mean there hasn't been funny stuff post-Jackie; of course there has. But Jackie leaving fundamentally changed the tone and attitude of the show and its host.
Really good observation. I (Dan) have heard a lot of the old show but I lived in a city where it was taken off air so I am not *as* familiar with it as I am the early Sirius era. But that's a great point about fans becoming cast members. We saw that in later years with guys like Wolfie getting writing gigs.
As I remember it, the beginning of the end came with Beth -- Stern was never the same after she came into his life. He lost his edge, his anger, his bitterness -- all that made him funny and relevant.
Beth was around in 2006-08 and the show was still great. Beth gets a lot of blame but I really don't think she was the main factor.
@@HeebandGoy
I respectfully disagree. The shows were still great, but I believe she was the catalyst of the sea change to come. I used to cringe whenever the subject of the North Shore Animal League came up, as it did almost daily -- Stern was never so insufferable as when speaking of the pet projects of his woke boring wife. When Beth came into the picture I noticed an immediate shift, though it took a while to fully manifest. She made him a nicer, more sensitive and considerate person -- and nobody was asking for that. I honestly believe it started with her.
Nah. It was the turk. Everything went to hell after Artie left and she came on board. She was a grifter who suckered Howard into what he is now. Add in his Hollywood weirdos like Jimmy Kimmel who reinforced this BS and you have what you have now.
Thanks for this. I quit listening right around the beginning of COVID when the show became a Trump bashing platform. Not that I'm political, but it was relentless.
You did an excellent job here, and especially with the time line of HSs descension. Kudos to you 👍
I stopped caring about the show when Artie left personally. Thank you so much for your hard work 😊
I came here for the comments.
Only 8 minutes in already loving it...... My favorite era from 2006 to about 2014.... I can't tell you how much I listen to these underground videos on UA-cam.... And any Howard Stern fans I suggest you find them before they're deleted.... The stuff he says about political figures and people now to hear him talks like who the hell is this guy..... There's so many good interviews from 2006 to 10 where he says stuff and now you go can you imagine if people heard that and I'm not talking racy sexy stuff... Just how he absolutely praises Trump and talks so much crap about Biden in 2009 lol
Just finished listening absolutely great... I've literally been searching for video like this for 10 years..... I agree with what both of you say on everything not even related to Stern..... Absolutely brilliant breakdown couldn't agree more... Stop listening in 2019... Just couldn't take it anymore... With that being said time to go back and listen to phony phone calls to lift my spirits.... There's a lot of underground 2006 to 2014 video still online
Pardon me sir, you caught me with a mouthful of salad...
Great job guys....precise and tight
Thank you!
Good job with this. I can’t stand when people say he just evolved. There’s one thing to evolve and there’s another to become a complete hypocrite. I also appreciate you both admitting how much you hate him now. It’s amazing how someone that I used to love changed so much that i now hate him with a passion.
That was bababooey saying that garbage.
First time listener,i listen to Duo Dissidence show and they say how great and funny y'all's show is so i thiught I'd listen
I wonder if Howard knows he’s all over tik tok being canceled by liberal women for his old clips of Anna Nicole Smith?
Btw can you believe Dannielynn is now an adult?!
He doesn’t acknowledge he is a grandfather, as he perceives it bad for his brand; the cool rock and roll guy with crazy hair. He wears a hair piece for the same reason.
He has admitted to the grandkids recently. His granddaughter calls him "Zoompa" because nearly their entire relationship has been over Zoom. Ashley had a son in the spring and Howard has actually seen that one.
@@reigningfrog that is so sad actually. I had my grandfather in my life for the first 44 years of it. And I loved just being near him.
I miss the 90’s when he was on E channel.
I listened up until he went to Sirius.
That sucks to hear how he’s trashed his legacy and cut out show history.
It's like he has no idea why people fell in love with his show, or maybe he does and just doesn't give a shit about ruining it.
That sums it up perfectly. He spent 25 years cultivating an audience only to purposely drive it away in the span of a few years.
100%
I listened since the 90s, got Sirus as soon as he switched and have had it all these years, I got rid of my subscription this year.
It’s the max headroom show now. Max headroom actually had interview show . It was ridiculous
I started listening to Stern in the late 80’s as i lived in the Philadelphia market (his shows started here in 1986).
Howard needs a supporting cast to succeed. This is what everyone misses about Stern’s success, he can’t do it alone. That’s why his show is so lame now, because it’s essentially him and Robin mixed in with Gary.
Stern had a great supporting cast like Jackie, Artie, Gary, Billy West, Fred, Stuttering John, and it was one big reality show. Stern is not Johnny Carson where the show was 100% about him, people tuned in for him to bust Gary’s ball, hear Fred’s sound effects, hear Jackie’s laugh, see what voice Billy West would do, see what crazy thing Artie would do. Stern was the ultimate composer who was able to bring it together and make an entertaining show for 4 hours.
Yes Stern has gone woke, and he has gone Hollywood Howie when he went on Dancing With the Stars. But he always thought HE was the only reason people tuned in, and that was never the case. He needed his supporting cast just as much as they needed him.
Stern did an interview show in 1992-93 for E channel by himself. The show lasted one season because it wasn’t the same without the supporting cast.
Pat Cooper said it right to Stern’s face in 1995, “I am a comedian, you’re not.” He was saying to Howard that you aren’t funny unless you have your supporting cast around you, yet i can be funny when it’s just me.
I loved Stern back in the days as those 90’s/00’s shows were as great as Radio can get. But as he burned bridges and Billy West left, Jackie left. Stuttering John left and finally Artie left. It’s just Howard and Robin now and it’s the lamest radio around. This is Howard without a supporting cast. Pat Cooper was exactly right.
Great observations! And yes, that's exactly right. The "wokeness" is just sort of a side effect, not the real problem. It's that the show went from a small, organic cast of characters, to a MASSIVE (and hidden) group of writers with Howard being the focus. I think the fear of cancellation did play a role but yes, what you said is the key point.
And neither of us knew that about Pat Cooper! Old dude nailed it for sure.
@@HeebandGoyThanks for the response! I think Stern going Woke is very calculated. He knows he lost his original audience so he has to justify his bloated contract to Sirius XM. He went into the Colbert/Kimmel playbook by getting political and latching onto a left wing niche fanbase. He will get good headlines from The View, The Today Show, and Late Night so that keeps him relevant.
The reason i know he isn’t sincere about woke, is he called out his buddy Jimmy Kimmel for being too political when Trump got elected. I remember Stern saying to Robin that he was surprised how political Jimmy had gotten and you just alienate fans. Once he saw that being friends with Trump was poison to his new found Hollywood friends, Stern now bad mouths Trump any chance he can get.
It’s kind of sad to watch him now. It reminds me when Bob Hope was going on Carson when he was 90 years old cracking lame jokes that my parents would only laugh at.
Stern can’t leave the spotlight as being irrelevant is his biggest fear. He never cared about his legacy and has essentially evaporated anything from his career before 2009 just to stay relevant as a sad old 70 year old man that goes to therapy 4 times a week.
I have gone to sleep EVERY night to CLASSIC Pelican for over a decade! I still find myself laughing hysterically. I refer to Stern in 2 eras. B.B- Before Beth (The Golden Ages) and A.B-After Beth (The Dark ages) Now they have things like......Cocktober. Great break down
The show was still really good even "AB" -- as we say in the video, we think 2006-08 might be the best years of the show, ever. Beth is a lightning rod w/ the fans but I personally don't think she has anything to do w/ what's happened.
"What do you want to be called!!??"
Eric the “Miserable Piece of Crap”
Jimmy Kimmel is fucking nuts too
Stern stopped giving a crap when he was obsessed with Q ratings and being legitimized in the eyes of people who never cared for him. He wanted on a prime time game show so badly. It was sad. I heard there was a woman who came on and tried to change his image. Idk. I started listening to O&A instead. Still listening to stern clips every day though.. he became an old yenta. ack ack!
The show was great!
Remember in 2019 when they swabbed the office and found a mystery V in Gary's office?😂😂
Then Howard the germaphobe got a Germ put into him live on air😂😂
That was funny😂😂
Big jokes = big laughs hahaha😂😂
You guys should start dabbling in Stuttering John. I think you'd be good at it.
Howie Imus became the establishment.
Perfectly said.
@@HeebandGoyhi I love Heeb & Shiksa 💕
I would be proud if the apartment building I lived in was named Harmeyer Heights, lol
He should name one of the apartment buildings Lotus Notes.
Howie the King of all shark jumpers!
I canceled the premium satellite radio membership a couple weeks ago. His show has been bad since he left the studio. And he’s old. If he can’t be bothered to go into the studio to create a good show, I can’t be bothered to pay for it.
Due Dissidence sent me here. 👍🏻
Welcome! ✊🏼
I’m with you on loathing how they edited Artie out of the Gary pitch segment, but being upset about them removing JD’s wedding, is kind of stupid. Give the guy a break. He makes probably no money, and no one wants to re-live that type of failure. I mean, would you want your wedding aired, after being divorced from that person?
Yeah, that's fair. Especially given how brutal she was. But I do think in the old days it would have at least come up.
When was the JD segment? Either it was completely uninteresting to me, or I missed it? I stopped listening after the Tom Brady interview in 2020, so maybe it was after that?
I wasn't suggesting that JD's wedding be aired. I was making a point that on the present day show, the past does not exist. One example of that is they don't mention JD's marriage or divorce, period. It's like it never happened. Can you imagine if Gary and Mary had divorced in the mid- to late- 90's? Howard would mention it every day.
@@toddmenard2330 JD had the girlfriend for awhile and it became many segments. JD's sheets, JD goes to the White House Correspondents Dinner, JD goes camping. The wedding coverage was a big deal because they wrote their own vows and JD called her a "beautiful creature" in an early draft. I think they split during the pandemic.
JD has had funny segments. His marriage I don’t even remember.
Da badass, bed sheets, him cancelling Ronnie’s car show, all gems.
Far as I’m concerned, they can never air anything about his marriage or that awful JDini skit ever again.
Before 2020, he went from laughing at the rise of Podcasts, then to hating their popularity over taking the popularity of traditional radios/talk shows, to now where he reformatted the show as one, by simply refusing to come back to the studio. The lack of love for the show, clearly present in Fred, Robin, and Gary as well.
They just gave a shit ton of money to Call her Daddy..Its like monopoly money
I am still a subscriber, but i rarely listen to the show. I still think its funny but i mainly listen to youtube these days. I definitely do not like his political views.
I invented comedic decline Robin. HOO! HOO! all me Robin HOO! HOO!
Howard has quiet-quit. poor Sirius paying him for garbage shows. that Revolution 2013 is a disgrace
He only gets paid for 'past performance' and access to the library.
Another sad thing look at all the people around Howard who was dying off Friends and family.. wackpack old stuff
Robin news was canceled I’m my opinion because she was not able to complete articles without stumbling on her words .
What would 90s Howie think about woke Howie? He'd be disgusted at what he's become. I left when Artie left as he was the show's last redeeming quality. Too much kissing stars asses & gay stuff.
I want to know what happened to the 1 A list and the 2 B list stars a week....
Click bait brought me here
You gotta go over to watch WATP or TOOKIE’s Podcasts. Stuttering John is the new Eric the Actor.
CCrazy Cabbie never died....
He has all these writers but what are they writing....
This cold/flu shitt with stern been there forever...Go back to 90's

Oh my!
Hey, Boner!
Been a fan since I first saw him on Letterman wearing leather pants. I still love Howard. The show is as hilarious as ever. .
ETM
He stopped being funny after 1990.
Is this the Grand Jury Indicting Trump...... Star Chamber?
Great show. Howard turned insane. Mentally ill.
I dont feel he nuked his legacy at all
Agreed. I still love his 2004-2009 material. His current content has no bearing on my view of that older material
It has been damaged.
yeahhhh i don't think he cares lol losers
I'm guessing you re making this video using Howard's name to get attention, because his legacy will always be as the greatest radio performer in the history of radio. What exactly will your legacy be. The idiots who knew nothing.😊
@@scottflamholtz4975 These are superfans commenting on the OBJECTIVELY BAD turn the show took, post 2013 and especially post 2020. Yes he will be remembered as you say, but he has driven away his core audience. And it’s not arguable.
@@danrich73 hey, I don't listen to him anymore, but he's an old man now and he gets too finish his career any way he wants to. He gave us many years of laughter and it's like, what have you done for me lately from so many people. Instead of putting out bullshit like this, people should be thanking him for changing radio for the better.
@@scottflamholtz4975 I hear you. And if it was JUST a matter of the show becoming less good, sure. I'd agree entirely. But the guy has PURPOSELY alienated the audience who gave him a career. But yes, if I were capable of just pretending the past decade doesn't exist, then you are absolutely right.
@@danrich73 I don't think he is doing what he is doing to purposefully alienate his fans. I think he has decided to do something differently in his old age, before he retires. I relate it to led zeppelin. I hated their last couple of albums after being a very big fan, but I realized that's what they did the whole time I loved them. They changed. They always tried new things. Just because I didn't like their music anymore didn't mean I needed to hate them or put them down for it. Howard changed. Just because you don't like his radio anymore, no one should put him down after all those years of enjoyment. He's what, about 70 years old now. In the end, he doesn't owe me or you anything.
@@scottflamholtz4975 I respectfully disagree. They went from 2 writers to 20 (or more). Everything about the show changed from what its CORE was. Be like going from Led Zeppelin II to "Oops I did it again"
Wiggy stern was forced on morning radio. Had different rules. Gatekeeper
