Henrietta is spot on. Look at other equine sports and the professionals in the UK mostly do it right. Take a horse out for a trip, get it used to going out, do little competitions, the result is not what counts, it is the learning experience for the horse that matters.

Finally someone who's said it the British don't have patience and far to many races in Britain for horses to show any quality, not to mention small fields

Excellent show every week, great views from Henrietta, im not sure the serious domination of the NH scene by the Irish is a good thing, will english trainers start by passing the festival ? and im Irish.....

Love Hen, great to hear her. She has high praise for the pre training yards in Ireland, they seem to make the difference 🤔 Yes, to quote from Kimmages article last week, they can turn a pigeon into an ostrich!! To take one of Hens own quotes (admittedly out of context) "It's in the blood"

A lot of sale companies give a lot off credit to the Irish point yards. The Irish point to points get some financial support they got the best stallions and probably the best mares until. We. gets some Form of surport we will always

I'm struggling with this. Ten, twenty years ago the power money (pre Celtic tiger) was with English owners who bought Irish horses, P2P winners and all who were sent to English trainers (Best Mate, anyone ever heard of him?), and they won everything. Is that not what has changed, more than anything else? Why are the best Irish horses not being trained in England as before?
Thought that was a very fair point from NL that a lot of small Irish trainers might not feel that there's any disparity between them and their equally small English counterparts: so maybe it's not such a clear Ireland v GB thing after all. Is it a valid comparison, using Mullins and Elliot who win everything as examples of 'Irish'? They're the best trainers for sure, so they'll get the best ones, and deservedly so. Owners like to win races , and the big owners like to win the big races.
Hen doesn't seem to be entirely clear about whether it's the pattern/calendar, or the mentality and patience of owners, or if it's the quality of staff that is the decisive issue. She seems to think everything is wrong. Which isn't very helpful if this situation needs to be addressed.

I think you're correct in that the major difference now is that the top horses are being bought and put into training with Irish trainers.
It has been a gradual change over 25 years.
I remember before the start of the 1996 Supreme Hurdle John Francome on C4 saying about how some bigger Irish owners are emerging and keeping their horses in Ireland to be trained.
The introduction of the Champion Bumper also has played a small part I believe,in that Irish owners could see there was success to be had at the Festival.
Probably the biggest change of all was the boom in the early 2000's in Ireland. Lots of money was made and people with serious money could now buy the very best horses. Why would a wealthy Irish man send his horse to be trained in Britain?

I think Henerietta is over complicating things. Years ago the British bought most of the best horses. Now the Irish are buying the best horses, with powerful owners. One thing I would agree on, is there is too much racing in Britain.

So she is a fan of the Irish bumpers/maiden hurdles with 20 runners, (for example) a Mullins odds on shot, two or three others trying and the rest just having a little practise and/or being steered round at the back to get a nice low handicap mark?

    • @Essydyk
      @Essydyk 2 роки тому

Correct - 2 or 3 go off in front and the others sit at a respectable distance and never being ridden to get in contention until the race is over.

The same trainer who used to pull her horses out because of a slight going change. Did she say the same about the Irish in the 80’s/90’s when Britain dominated

Get a bit tired of the Irish/British thing; the horses don't know where they're from! Maybe Irish trainers are better craic, give the owners a better experience.

  • @Chief_Brody

20 runner maiden hurdles in Ireland are as uncompetitive as you can get. It's not nearly as simple as the best horses are no longer being shipped across the Irish Sea but that is a huge reason. Prize money is also better than in the UK so why would O'Leary or Rich send their horses over to be trained? I know McManus does but he's been doing it long before Ireland overtook the UK in NH terms. I can't comment about how the Irish introduce their horses to jumping/attitude to Bumpers as I'm not au fait with that side of the game.

Absolute nonsense. As with most things in life - buy/stockpile the best and you will get results on a year by year basis.
That's what is happening in Ireland particularly with Mullins - the quality of horse he has available to him he really can't fail.
