What are your favourite filters? (also! saw a mistake a 1:43.. there was supposed to be Fx6 footage, oops)
The MB filter (mist bloom) 😂😂😂
My always-on filter is the Tiffen Black Satin 1. Compared to the Black Pro-Mist, it has a subtler and more natural-looking highlight bloom and contrast reduction and does a great job softening fine details like wrinkles. To me, the Black Pro-Mist is more of an “effect” (an amazing one!), and the Black Satin just makes footage and photos look more (here come the buzzwords) “filmic” and “organic” without being too obvious.
I would say ND and excited to start my journey with Mist filters. Thanks for sharing your words of wisdom Mark! 🙏
Any thoughts on 1/4 or 1/2 and which amount will be a good first filter?
@@makestuffmike The 1/8 and 1/4 are the most popular strengths. The 1/2 is a _lot_ of effect, so if you went with that you’d probably still want a 1/4 for times when you don’t want it to take over the shot. So... both 🤪
Probably the most subtle Polar Pro ad yet. 🤣
Epic video man, thanks!! What's the suction cup rig you are using in 10:23 ? Thanks
Just yesterday I was thinking about how I can soften the highlights on the subjects face in an interview I shot. My prayers have been answered. Thank you!
great video.. there's no black mist for the basecamp matte box though right?
Getting an upload notification from you brings me joy! Excellent video, Mark!
thank you Chris! love to hear it, appreciate the support brother!
sad. stop obsessing over youtubers. they dont care about you, they just want the views and everyone is jerking off trying to be the next peter mckinnon. it's all just a show man. don't be a sheep.
8:55 is there.a way to control the strength of the bluemorphic effect? Or is it basically an on or off situation? Also, in the background of that shot, the screen seems to be flickering, I've noticed that in some of my footage, do you know how we can avoid that?
The more autheicate, more character and organic. Love that.
This is amazing, you’re a great teacher. Going to invest in some filters now. Thank you for this content!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
As always, great video. Yea I got into buying my own filters recently ... and I am addicted ... have spent quite a bit on them and have several. So much fun.
I never knew what mist filters are for. (I was like, why would anyone need anything other than circular polarizers and ND filters?) Thank you for the explanation!
This is super helpful to me. Sometimes (like you've said in previous videos) there's so much information out there that tends to leave someone more confused than helped. I really love how your videos underline the important reasons to use (and practice with) certain pieces of gear or skills to make something more "cinematic". Thanks for posting all the content you do. Can't wait for your online course to drop!
Thank you Zak! So glad this video was able to help brother
10:18 - so the variable nd you screwed on worked as a polariser as well?
The Helios 44 is such a beautiful lens! I use it all the time, it was from my dad's Zenit camera, i use it to shoot with my 7D, i'm definitely gonna check for a mist filter
Curious your thoughts. I’d been eyeing the base camp from polar pro but recently purchased the recon to try it out. I really enjoy how small the recon matte box is. Am I shooting myself in the foot though? A lot less filter offering on the recon matte box system. You think the base camp is worth going with over the recon matte box? I don’t do professional. Just personal. Wanna get the best for my money.
Was just looking at the base camp for my fx3 and had some questions on the mist filter. Did a quick search and realized you had one. You and Gerald have become my favorite channels. Thanks so much for the video
Very cool and helpful vid. Thanks
Enjoying all these vids Mark. Learning so much. Thank you.
just got my Moment Cinebloom which I love! Great video, nothing like a friday afternoon in the Bone Zone😂
nice, how heavy is the effect? would it be closer to a 1/4 black satin?
@@markbone light that you can see it’s there but still very natural but I can’t say 100% how close it is since I haven’t used the black satin but this is the video i watched comparing the 2 ua-cam.com/video/s71dcqsft4k/v-deo.html
What brand is your matte box ? Can it contain more than 2 filters?
Thanks for the video !
please please please tell me how you mounted your small tube lights to your shelf? :) where can I get this mount? :)
thank you. great topic.🤯💎💎💎☑️
Since I'm using the EOSR I really love my 14mm Samyang RF mount but with it you can only use a matte box and filters which are often times more expensive.
Great video man! I love the mist filter
I'm gonna start storing all my lenses in my kitchen now too🤣
Great content as usual!
Love your videos man! Super thoughtful and informative without being overly "UA-camy" Side note- Probably going to be buying the Basecamp from B&H soon, you ever look into posting B&H affiliate links?
What strength of mist filter do you use most often?
Great video Mark! I love your transition at 0:37 is there a place where I can purchase that?
check out my last video, i have a link to Storyblocks and I believe you can find it there!
Great video, Mark. I'm learning so much from you at the moment! Which graduated ND would recommend: do you think that you reach for a certain density most of the time, or do I ultimately need a set of the things?
Where did you get those small lights that seem to be able to stick anywhere ? What brand are those small rectangular lights :)?
Ah love the mist filter! Super helpful :)
My heart broke when I saw the note about the sd card with the FX6! I've been using V90 SD cards with my FX6 with no problems so far. Such a fun camera to use 😀👍
awesome video dude! super funny about the SD cards on the fx6 lol
This was great info. Do we IRD ND filter for Sony A7SIII? or Polar Pro is good enough?
hi Mark .. can u pls tell me which power( strength )of mist filter were u using and which strength is normally ur favourite while using mist 🌫 filters ?
What kind of mist filter do you prefer and do you switch depending on the situation? I have a tiffen pro mist ¼ and love the effect but it's too strong for night shot's so I'll invest in the ⅛ version as well... Do you swith too or only use the lower intensity ?
yeah I find 1/8 and 1/4 are good, anything more and it's too overpowering
@@markbone thanks Mark! I'll get a 1/8 for darker scenes since even the 1/4 is overpowering
Polarizer filters can be such a HUGE lifesaver when it comes to reflections.
100%
I have had huge reflections lately can you help me understand this
I love your videos, plenty of great info for beginners like myself. Keep up the good work Mark.
Thank you!!
Was literally just looking at filters when I got the notification 👀
yes!! love it when that happens
Definitely need to up my filter game.
Just started playing with regular ND and polarizers. But I'd love some mist/bluemorphic/gold/warm filters.
Start with a polar pro mist or a 1/4 or 1/8 black satin
My mist filter = a big ol dirty thumb print on the front and back glass. 👌
haha, what ever works man! I've used hot glue on glass before!
I totally concur! Filters are relevant and add a lot to the production esthetics. Where would you situate the optical low pass filter in cameras like the S1H in this discussion? Is it like a mist filter? Would you still add a mist filter in that case?
Mark, will you often use a diffusion/mist filter along with vintage glass or is it usually on newer sharper glass where you would use the filter?
it all depends the lens, I find i don't need it as much on a 44-2 but definitely want it on Sony or Canon glass because it's sooo sharp
Mark you're great! ♥ Can I add a filter on another one without adapters if they have the same size, for instance 77mm? so I’d like to put a black mist on a 77mm diameter lens and then a nd+cpl filter on the black mist. Without holder or adapter can I?
Thank you for explaning I really appreciated! ☺ I have a question for you, thank you in advance for answring... I would like to use the lens Sony 24-105mm on my Sony A7IV, then I would like to apply a Nisi Black Mist on it, and on the black mist I’d like to put the ND64 6stops + CPL integrated filter by Nisi. Will I make a mess of my photos and videos? Would this be a bad choice to make? Is the 24-105mm G really less sharp, bidimensional, sad looking and not good in night, low light or indoors situations? Cause my intention is to get a tridimensional, cinematic looking on my photos and videos.
Great video. I’m a wedding film maker and just discovered the Helios this year, love it! Would you think a 1/8 or 1/4 mist would match that lens better?
Very interesting - thanks!
You seem to have both circular and square filters, could you please elaborate on which ones you mount on the actual lens and which ones you use in your Mattebox?
The 2 filters I ALWAYS have with me : Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/8 and Schneider Linear True-Pol. (NDs are internal).
Great info!! Is IRND better than Standard ND? Which one is better?
I think IR is only useful for certain sensors. it used to be a must for RED
Hi, are you using the Polar Pro Mat Box on gimbal?
No
Hey Mark on my BMPCC 6K G2, I have 3 filters I want to use, IR/UV cut, IRND and Black pro Mist, do you think 3 filters is too many, and also is there a guide to which order filters should be stacked?
Does the IRND not do the same as the IR/UV Cut?
@@andrehugomedia I decided in the end to go with just the IR/UC cut filter and go with a VND in front of that.
Mist filter link actually leads to the polar pro vnd
Thanks for the video, so do you always use ND filter inside and not only outside?
Do they sale a mist filter with the rectangular look for the matte box or is it just the regular one
Ordering 1/4 and 1/8 strength 4x5.65 mist filters today. Super excited °¬)
Does it matter what matte box you use? Which is the one in this video?
In this video I’m using polar pro which is proprietary but the Industry standard is a 4x5 filter tray
@@markbone wow did not expect you to respond yourself! Thanks so much. Love your stuff. New film maker here just moving from free-lance work and working for a company to starting out with my own company. Your stuff has been an amazing teaching tool for me. Ty so much!
Just ❤️ the review !!!
This was really amazing! Thank you!
great stuff but this mist filter image looks like you just decrease your sharpness... But I like its effect when filming against the sun
I used to shoot photos with Conklin filters but it was such a pain. I just bought the Polarpro mattebox, so I'm hoping this is going make things easier.
it's such a lightweight system, it just sucks you can't drop in any other filters
@@markbone I wonder if there is a viable way to cut my existing Conklin filters to fit the Polar Pro mattebox slot. Maybe a Home Depot trip may solve the issue of compatibility.
FILTERS: WHY AREN'T YOU USING THEM?!
Thats because a good filter is very expensive.
Nowadays even crappy filters are expensive!!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
Btw.....I use one of those tiny mirrorless cameras!!! ;-)
So bluemorphic is only for the basecamp ?
great video man. do you use 1/8 or 1/4 mist more??
1/8
Great video as always! I''ve been holding off on the Basecamp until came out with some diffusion filters. It looks like they sell it with a whole array of ND filters. I have the FX9 as well. Do you use the electronic variable ND in conjunction with the ND filters or do you just have it turned off? I guess I'd like to know if I could save some money and only buy the ND filters that you actually use with the FX9. Which ND filter do you use?
I use a mix of the internal Variable ND on the Fx9 and the basecamp VND
@@markbone So far I've found the internal ND adequate for my 24-70 GM 2.8. At what f stop do you feel you need to start stacking additional NDs?
@@markbone Can You confirm that you have no color cast/shift when combining electronic VND let's say 1/64 and above + basecamp VND? Everyone says You cannot mix CP filter with electronic ND from Sony cameras. When. using wide lens lately i had terrible colors cst and shift (half frame yellow and half blue)
Is it possible to stack a CP filter with a VND?
wow, im looking for that Tele novella look !!!😂😂😂
😆
Love your videos...
Will try fog filter
Careful with the fog filter, it's pretty hectic!
For general use, what do you like most for mist..? 1/4? 1/8?
A mix of both but 1/8 is safe
@@markbone Do you find yourself using one more than the other? Are there times where 1/4 is too much? I’m going to be getting one for my Tilta Mini matte box and I don’t have the $ to throw down on 2. So... I’m having to pick one for now.
I have that lens, Love the Hellios, took me 4 months to get it from Russia but it's awesome.
Another perfectly interesting tutorial, thanks, but I would like to ask a question on another topic if possible, what disk space does it take to shoot and edit a 30 minute documentary for example in 4K, in a ratio of say 5 to 1 for the shots?
Welcome to the Bone Zone
Channel rebranding. lol Thanks for the video, brother!
it might be time
And I already had Polar Pro Filters on their way when I saw that video ahah
But yeah I think they add that little something that makes an image from great to wow
Great to Wow is the goal
@@markbone 100% 👌
Might be a basic question, but when using ND filters, where should I have my aperture? Or is that just dependant on the kind of look I want. Depth of field etc
Which mist do you use? There are 2 versions of them
What do you use for square ND filters? I shoot with a P6K and have been disappointed with a few brands.
Currently I use the Polar pro VND for the most part in the basecamp but on the Alexa camera and such I'll use a LMB5 mattebox usually with Schneider 4 x 5 ND filters
@@markbone Thanks! I've been on the variable for too long!
Are there any recommendable (is that even a word) mist filters of other brands you can directly screw onto a lense?
Tiffen Black Satin but PolarPro has a ton also
@@markbone I'll check it out, thanks!
What density Polarpro mist filter did you use for these videos?
I believe it’s around 1/4
@@markbone Polar pro has only two options, which are called Mist Filter and Mist Heavy Filter. Not sure it is which one.
Love this video! Thanks as always MB
Thanks Ash!!
Super content! Did not find bluemorphic on basecamp site? Help someone, nothing on Amazon or Google....
Filters really helpful 📷🎥
100%
Just curious what Matt box do you use?
The Basecamp by PolarPro
I see you with the ALD hoodie
🤫
Thanks the video Mark. Great stuff as always.
thank you!!
What was the name of the Matte Box yall? Anyone have a link? Thanks :)
I ordered a tripod form Henry's on January 1 and I still don't have it! 😫
Does anyone know if this mattebox can fit over/around the bulbous Sigma 14-24mm lens hood?
I would like to get an ND filter, but I shoot indoors all the time 🙄🤭
Thanks Mark for another brilliant vid 👍❤️
You could probably use multiple filter adapters to stack
is polar pro the way to go? anyone else found anything else that is comparable? mainly looking for a great mist filter!!
greenall with the flippy dippy
Hey Mark, thanks for your channel and this brilliant content. Question: How do you use those ND filters with mate box and everything in documentary situation where the light changes all the time and nothing is predictable?? Variable ND's, although not as good in terms of quality, at least offer this flexibility... But I was wondering if you were really using this more "cinema / fiction" set-up on doc shoots too..
The ND filters in the polar pro matte Box are variable also. You can spin them to adjust the ratio
Deakins hates filters.
I've heard though the Smoque filter can imitate haze on the set. Have you tried?
I have, it will never give you "beamage" so that's my only gripe. Check out my video on haze
I also think a Mist filter adds that RED feel to the image. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what it looks like to me.
Hi Mark, great video. What brand is that thing that you insert all the filters in on the front?
what picture profile do you run on your a7iii?
HLG3. Keep it simple
Can some direct me towards some good Filters for Tilta Matte box 🙏 lol cant seem to find the right size .
Check out Schneider 4x5's. I think they might fit
@@markbone thanks!
Did I miss something ..did you list every product except the matte box??
My cinematografie teacher Told me that i shouldnt use variabel ND filters because it has a polarizing effect om skin. How do you think about that theory?
I was listening to Roger Deakins interview and he said that he does not use any filters in front of his lenses what do you think 🤔
Deakins gets to use what ever lenses he wants so he's able to get the most out of the character of the lenses rather than having to help a $500 stills lens. He's a legend and has a the capabilities to improve the image with art direction and lighting
@@markbone I agree with you
You could always, you know, just lift the black point in curves to create a “print black” as it is with film…
