The man is into plants and rainbow, so this was a real thrill for me. Not until recently did he count his aquariums. There are 85 of them with water in them. You didn't see very many that looked dirty either. (Note: Let's be honest, anyone with many tanks will tell you that they are hardly ever ALL clean) Gary put in some work getting these cleaned up for this video and I thank him for that.
What I like about what Gary does is that he goes DEEP into one type of fish. (He knows a ton about others, but Rainbows are his game.) He takes many of the fish from one end of the spectrum to the other. Many of the fish in his collection are wild caught- several by him or by someone he knows, that he gets them from. As you can see he then keeps them in a species only tank. He is very particular about keeping just ONE species of fish in a tank and as he says in the video- he doesn't take eggs out of a tank where the different fish species are mixed. Failure to do this is the reason you see crappy genetics and ugly rainbowfish in the pet shops. (Its also done intentionally by the major wholesalers as well at times)
Obviously, the hobby needs people like Gary who are committed to taking a fish full circle- Collected in the wild, brought back and well cared for, then bred and distributed. Keeping good fish around for hobbyists to enjoy the great strains of these great fish. If you have read this far- thanks- Can ya tell I liked going to his place.
