"I just got back into rolling skating now at age 33. I used to do it back when I was a child at either family events or field trips and surprisingly, I was pretty good! 👍 I also dabbled in skateboarding for atleast 7 yrs of my life as a teen. Last year I was invited to a skating rink b-day party for one of my wife's nieces. I honestly did NOT want to go. Fearing that I'd see someone I know there and they'd think I was corny for participating ect and I hadn't done it in soooo long as well. I've gotten older, I've been working lots, Im a cancer survivor, I was battling a drug addiction. I've honestly just been through alot and I've never had a outlet. Until that night at the party after having my wife beg me to go... Let me tell you 😂 I showed OUT!! Surprising my family and myself. I finally felt good and FREE to express myself and knew that roller skating was something I desperately needed to be a part of. It was also a good way for me to release the stresses of my life and challenge myself physically and mentally. Just bought 2 pair of HIGH-END skates with much extensive research, 1 for rhythm skating and one for speed skating. I'm already beginning to meet new friends and people at the local rink!!!! Skating was calling me.. Now I do it almost everyday with the tip money I make from my Job. I'd say get out there and do it!! Don't let your "limitations" and the bad things life throws at you to hold you back." THANK YOU FOR THIS VID!

Amazing video. I didn't want to watch at first because I thought it would be simply "no, you're not too fat! You're beautiful! Feel yourself!" And by saying that, I don't mean to belittle those kinds of messages. It's just that, that seems to be all anyone ever has to say about insecurities. But my goodness, the message you delivered in this video was thoughtful, thought provoking, philosophical, and so so so inspirational. What you said about insecurities that very well could be legitimate? Thank you!! Yes, it is not shameful to have insecurities, yes they may be spot on, and yes, I absolutely agree that they should not stop you.
Personally, my insecurity does revolve around my looks. I'm not conventionally pretty, and in fact I was often mistaken for a boy during middle and high school. It's not low self esteem, it's simply a fact that I am not pretty. But, not being pretty doesn't stop me from having bomb style, and you know that when I go skating I put together outfits that are weird and funky but make me feel beautiful. And sometimes, I think I actually do look conventionally pretty.
When I go skating in a cute ass outfit, I feel free, and I feel a calming effect from the sound of wheels carving, and the way we can so elegantly make our body move with the slightest of weight shift. I feel in tune with myself and how my body works when I'm skating, and it is absolutely therapeutic. Asphalt roads suddenly seem rubbery under your skates, not a foreboding surface threatening to scrape up your skin, but a comrade in your journey, bending and swaying with you to bring you where you want to go and how you want to get there. That may sound a bit weird, but this is the mindspace your video has put me in, and I really really want to thank you for that.
Thank you for your thoughts, they were insightful.

First off .... you are an incredible writer and I can only imagine you moving through the world in your own style. Isn't it amazing that your insecurity has a positive effect in other parts of your life? I feel like it has made you a bit fearless! I want to see your outfits now :) Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Thank you for also acknowledging that insecurities are legit. I almost didn't want to say that because it can be thought of as controversial. Insecurities are NOT shameful. They are real and can be overcome.

I'm 50 years old, and started skating again last summer ( having not skated since I was 9 years old). I have been watching your channel and your videos have helped me. I had all those "I'm too___..." but I didn't let the fact that I was old, fat, weak, bad knees, etc stop me. My only regret is that I've not been skating all along. I'm the introvert skater. It's just me and my music and, right now....a big empty parking lot. 💕

Started again at 55 and it is hard to accept that I’m a novice because I was so good at skating when I last skated, when I was about 20! I was a super confident street skater and now I skate in a car park and I don’t skate from home to the car park like I would have done then. Getting older sucks but I’m so proud that I fell four times this week and just got up and carried on. My worst injury so far is a sprained little finger where I bent it back when I fell. It’s good to know my bones are strong (hrt?) and that I bounce. That makes me feel young again. As Debbie the wise one has repeatedly said, it is more than just skating, it gets in your blood.

It gives me so much trust in myself and I can wear everything I want and I try to do everything that I like on my skates because I'm skating. I love this no bull motivational video. Before I started I thought, no one in this entire country seems to roller skate, I've never come across a skater in my lifetime here other than children, I don't have the money for the Cool roller skates I see girls on Instagram have, I am clumsy and weak I won't be able to do hand stands in my roller skates and whatever other crazy stuff I see on the internet... hell i cant even take classes cause theres no one here teaching skating, I will waste money on roller skates that won't be of quality and will be difficult to learn on and then have zero guidance and accomplish nothing. Is there point in even starting?
That was a terrible way to start myself off. I spent 50 euro on my first skates. I just couldn't resist the urge. I put them on once for ten minutes and felt unsteady, and felt watched in public and took them off and didn't put them on for another three months. I started practicing on an empty car park with not even a single Google of instructions and it took forever to learn to roll forwards. Another two months passed and I felt like I had my roller skates for nearly half a year and still didn't learn how to effectively turn, stop, go backwards, approach a step or drop. Anything. I felt useless because I'd see girls on Instagram post their moxi daily skate challeges and how it took them three months from no skills to tricks at the park. But it was too fun to stop. I felt good when I did it, then terrible when I saw others do it better online, but then great again when I put my own skates on even if I failed at learning a new skill. I'll say this, the internet is a terrible place about 70% of the time for creating insecurity and jealousy, but it's also what got me skating and helped me find these lessons. My biggest take away point from my skate journey is don't let other peoples journeys affect your own skate journey. I still can't skate compared to some but can skate compared to my past self. I'm still weak and clumsy compared to some but not compared to me last year. I'm constantly improving at my own pace and when I focus on it, I enjoy myself and motivate myself to do more. Meanwhile Instagram is making me feel like roller skating needs to be done in nice clothes and only if you're pretty and only if you were previously a dancer or a gymnast or a figure skater. Do what you want and how you want it. I'm still learning from my own advice.

All skates will let you switch out the wheels. As for brands, I always have to recommend Riedell and Sure-Grip. They’re 2 of the original giants in roller skating, and they put out a quality product at various price points, so everyone can always afford them. The Sure-Grip Malibu is $99. The Riedell OGs are 699 (I believe). There really is something for everyone. A bonus is you can always find some somewhere. It helps if you check their websites first. I’ve found lots still in stock by checking their websites.

It'd be great to look good, of course, but I'll get sad and it'll ruin that flying feeling if my focus is how others see me. Tell me I look like I'm having fun and leave it at that😎

Greetings from Brisbane, Australia! My 13yo niece has always been quite insecure. I took her to a rink a bit more than a year ago for the first time and it has been a game changer. She loves it! She wants to learn. She loves to learn. She’s confident and it’s wonderful! We can’t go to the rink anymore but my office has a brilliant underground car park that’s all ours on the weekend. She finally mastered crossovers last week and I couldn’t be more proud! It’s also been the inspiration to get me back on skates after 30 years. It’s taken practice and respecting my limits but I’m so glad I didn’t let my inner voice tell me I’m too old. I’m 47. We love your tutorials and your passion is infectious. You and I have been teaching her together!

i cant even express how inspiring this was. i was practicing in the garage and getting incredibly frustrated that i couldn’t transition from skating backwards to forwards when i clicked the video. about two minutes in i had to stop and sit on the floor and cry because i had forgotten why i started skating to begin with. this helped me remember that it isn’t about what other people think of me when i’m at the rink; it’s about what i feel and the freedom and excitement it brings me. thank you so much❤️❤️

Like you've taught me that you can prepare for falling so when you do fall, it's not a big deal, it doesnt hurt as bad as youd think, and it just is something that happens when you're learning something new or progressing. I went through a tough break up of a relationship of 2 years in February and I was crushed. The absolute next day I had this feeling of going to a rink and just skating away with a friend. The moment my wheels hit that floor I realized how much I was missing out on how happy and relieving it was to glide across the rink with all my worries behind me. I've been skating almost everyday ever since with my best friend and together we are getting better and better everyday, learning new tricks and loving life! i’ve had social anxiety issues for a long time. i was pulled out of school right before quarantine started. i quit every single extracurricular activity i was doing. everything i loved, because i had no motivation to continue and i was so scared of people that i couldn’t build a skill around them, because building a skill involves trial and error and my anxiety tells me that every time someone sees me fail they automatically think i’m pathetic, as if they haven’t failed at things in life either. since quarantine, i’ve felt so much better and having time to rejuvenate myself has been so much less stressful than when i was in school. i feel so much better but i cant start any activities again because they’re all still cancelled. beginning to skate again recently has already built my confidence even a little more. i’m so very grateful that i’ve started doing this again because my version of the title throughout the last few years has basically been “am i too [everything] to do [anything]”. and with skating that hasn’t applied and i cannot ever explain how good that feels after being so tired of being so anxious all the time.

most start around the $100 mark. id avoid the $40 skates you find on amazon or at walmart, theyre toys. the wheels are plastic, the truck cushions are plastic, the bearings barely work, etc.
theres no shame in buying used if price is an issue. if anything, the used pair is already broken in. :)
whatever you do get down the road, just make sure to look up reviews of them first.

I'm going to go out there tomorrow and practice my skating. Though I hope I'll be alone, I'm afraid of being made fun of for my bad/insecure skating. It's very funny though, that I'm so insecure on my skates when I used to be quite good with my roller blades (inline skates). However, I actually want to learn how to skate again to help me to lose weight and to have fun :) my goal is to get good enough that can visit one of our skating routes and manage it okay and still have fun :) And I'm certainly introvert! xD

Roller skating is for everybody, EVERY BODY, every background that there is. You are so right when you say it helps to calm and create a beauty in yourself. I suffer from chronic and very persistent depression and it stops me from skating as much as I want to. Do you wear protective gear when you skate? Wearing them works wonders for me, I'd be scared stiff if I didn't have all my pads on when I skate. I started out in roller derby so it's kinda natural for me to wear the gear but I see a lot of beginner skaters on UA-cam videos who don't have any pads on. It's much nicer to learn to skate when you have the safety of falling on your pads.

Hello my sweet lady. You have no idea how much you inspire people. I am 67 years old and started skating last year. I had a list of why I couldn’t skate. Too old, too weak, knees hurt, back hurts, people will laugh at me...etc. Your videos literally paved the way for me to have the courage to give it a try. As a young girl I did some roller skating but that was well over 50 years ago!! As you said, everyone has to make a personal assessment on realistically what their goals are. At first mine was just being able to NOT FALL!! But once my balance was achieved, I wanted to do MORE! That is where your videos came in to play. I watched them over and over learning something new for me to try. I will have to admit, the edges thing is still a little mystery to me but I’m working on it. Skating makes me feel young again! Skating makes me feel happy. You can’t be depressed while skating! The sound of the wheels gliding over the floor, my hair flowing in the self made breeze, spectators smiling and waving, all of that is free and good for the soul. So I want to encourage everyone to STOP putting yourself in a box if “I can’t “. Lace up some skates and see what freedom feels like!

I had a feeling this was going to be good and I was right! Dirty you described what I call connecting to the essence or "source energy" when you speak about the back and forth movement of skating. The movement is very mystical, soothing and healing. It is true that a lot can be left on the skating rink because you connect to the divine when you skate and healing happens and answers come. So great to see someone else get emotional when trying to impart wisdom from a place of "true knowing". I feel ya! Thanks for going there Dirty Deborah Harry! I believe we receive 'divine' messages from all sorts of places and I believe I just received one in this video.

Hi Dirty, I am 49 years old and suffer from panic attacks, and a bad back and I have recently started skating. I used to live on my skates as a kid and have had ice skating lessons as an adult. My hubby bought me some roller boots for my birthday and I have been following your lesson videos in my lounge. Thank you so much for them all! This video was particularly important to me as I am trying to pluck up the courage to go to a skating rink. I don’t know anyone else that skates, i really wish i could come to your rink, but i’m in the UK. Thank you for showing your emotion about this subject, i was welling up too! 🇬🇧❤️

You’ve inspired me to pick up skating again! My 12 year old just started skating and I took her to a group class at our local rink where I saw MANY people my age and older learning to skate (I’m 47!). I haven’t skated since I was my daughter’s age. I’ve had long Covid for 2 years, I’m just now getting into exercise via rowing, I have to take things easy because I’m not in great condition, I’ve got POTs and heart rate issues thanks to long Covid, and my knees aren’t great, AND I’ve put on 30 lbs since getting Covid. I have a fear of hurting myself that I never had because I *feel* old now with all my new issues. But I know I can take things slowly at my own pace and that with consistent effort I’ll learn!! And I have my daughter cheering me on! Thank you so much for this video, it’s EXACTLY what I needed to hear!! ❤️

I've skated everyday for the last two months and I so enjoy the feeling of my mind blocking out everything else to just concentrate (a lot) on skating (not falling down). Sometimes it's 10mins, sometimes an hour, but I look forward to that time everyday. It was your advice that encouraged me to skate daily and I quickly noticed the mental health benefit it gave me also. Thank you!

I'm 49 and wanted to start skating but couldn't articulate why. You reached in to my brain and put it into words. I'm DRAWN to it. Thank you. I just bought skates today.

I ordered some skates about a month ago after failing at my first attempt in 2016. I got discouraged, and my insecurity was, “I’m too inexperienced to skate.” I felt stiff and so horrible at balancing that I beat myself up too much and turned my back on it.
Years later, my interest was reignited through the joy of others. I saw how happy they were when they were skating, and how all of their practice paid off and they glided across streets and parks and rinks with ease. I wanted to experience what they were experiencing, and so I decided to try it again.
My skates haven’t arrived yet, but I’ve been watching all of your videos to get ready mentally. I’m even starting to have dreams about skating!
Your content and messages are so educational and encouraging! I’m so thankful you’ve decided to share your life of skating with everyone, it’s given me a something to look forward to. Thank you!!

Thank you for being honest about having insecurities. I have my fair share of them, but I keep showing up with my wheels. We just need to acknowledge them, handle them, and grow from them, not let us stop us from having the time of our lives!

Dirty, I lost 2 pant sizes in 3 months by skating twice a week for 2 hours. I wasn’t looking to lose weight and I didn’t, I gained more muscle! I also gained some new friends! It’s my shamanic tribal release and I can’t wait to get back on the hardwood!

I needed this. I use to skate at this rink when i was little and I LOVED it. I also ride motorcycles so the mention of the motion and how it feels is something I do relate to and love. Since the sh** hit the fan I lost my job and I have been wanting something more for myself in terms of a place to put energy. I have gained a considerable amount of weight and that is something I struggle with but I love the message. It shouldn't be what holds me back from this. And it was actually Instagram that knew what was good for me and then youtube lead me to your videos. (Which are very nostalgic because of the rink) Anyway, thank you for the message. I hope to get back to this rink in the future.

Totally made me cry! I can’t express how much I appreciate your sincerity and authenticity and passion. Expressing yourself and teaching others to skate is clearly your ministry- and you’re spreading SO much LOVE! Thank you! I am 44, lost my job due to COVID- have no idea what the future holds and started skating again to get outta my head and feel in my body how to be “gracefully uncertain” and build more Faith with every glide. My husband and son think I’m silly for being so enthusiastic about skating, but you validated why it feels like such a calling and passion for me right now. Thank you so much for your generosity of spirit through skating! God bless you and all those you touch!

One of my favorite videos from you! This spoke to my heart because the reason I started skating again, is because it makes me feel alive, free, happy and strong! You hit the reason right on the head! It's like a feeling of inner excitement and peace at the same time! Thank you for this video Debra! Keep on rollin! :-)

Just turned 40, mum of two, started skating over a year ago, partly by your vid's. Now skating both roller and inline and got so addicted I've lost count of my pairs of skates (and for different types of skating) Stared at by the other mums (what is she doing?), laughed at by some.....but...some smile and say 'what fun' some of thm see me bomb a hill and say 'wow how cool!'. The kids the same age as mine say to their parents 'wow how does she do that? I want to!' and it's those times when I think I may have inspired someone else that I feel so happy. Face your fears, live your dreams :)

This is such a great message! I was a great jam skater as a teen. Stopped for a couple decades. Got back into skating ten years ago. Two years ago I had a BJJ injury: Achilles Tendentious shredded at the heel. Took nine months to fully recover. Meanwhile, put on 50 new pounds. Got back on a skates a few times with the youngest kids. Hit a rock on the rink floor - owner allows people out there in shoes. That sudden fall gave me a second degree tear in my hamstring. More long recovery. I was on skates once before covid shut the world down. So I just bought some outdoor wheels and hit a park trail today. Rougher ride. Shins barked. Going to take some work to get back to myself. For anyone reading this, I'm a 6'2" dude weighing 270 today. I was 220 when that first injury hit. I will get back to it, and no matter what you think is stopping you, you can do this too. I wish you all well! I forgot to mention I'm 43. A living breathing middle aged man on roller skates.

I am that 12 year old kid you mentioned that skated when younger and then gave it up. I didn’t start again until I was in my 20’s to cruise the strand in the South Bay Area. I left Cali and once again stopped skating but kept my Riedell skates that I just couldn’t part with. Probably because they were $250! In walks a global pandemic...I am now 44 and was super fearful of falling and getting injured. But something was calling me back to skating. Cute Tik Tok videos and being bored and restless during a global pandemic inspired me to punch past my fears and get back out there. I need something to be good at, and something to call my own. Your videos have helped me immensely. I skate for at least 10 minutes a day even if it’s just in my kitchen to build my confidence and basic skills. In just 3 weeks I have improved 110%, my husband, who’s good at everything, even thinks so. I feel a boost in my confidence and it helps to manage the depression I’ve been experiencing due to this Covid nonsense. I have a long way to go, but I’m not going to stop. I’ve been using what I learn from you to help my 9 year old daughter skate, and we just love you in our house. So thank you for putting yourself out there, and know that you have positively impacted at least 2 people up here in Washington state. My new motto is “Skate don’t hate,” and you’re right. Skating is a way to escape all the negativity, there’s something just so soothing about rolling around listening to good tunes. Many thanks!!

Yep. Skating gets the whole body, mind and soul moving. After a break up ... we need to infuse ourselves with good vibes. Not that we can't grieve the loss of what could have been but just changing lanes a bit is so helpful. Much love to you and happiness in your future.

I absolutely love this video! I completely agree. My entire life I’ve really hated being bad at things and would just quit because I wanted to immediately end good. With skating I’m really enjoying seeing my progress and working on something to better myself and I will not be able to take that into other things in my life that I would never have the patience to work at. 🖤 it makes me so happy and when you’re happy life is better

I’ve been learning by watching you for a month. You explain it well. Still waiting for my skates to be delivered. Last, night I had my first lesson at age 50 on rentals! Last skate was ages 8 & 29 and determined to do a downtown smoothly. Bummed I missed the reservation ( went fast!) to your class here in San Diego but perhaps next one! Love all your vids and hope skate in Fountain Valley some day soon. You are so real- thanks!💕

thank you for sharing! i know you read the comments, and I just wanna say I feel the emotion too! This our life and we have to do what makes us happy, it may seem so silly that something like roller skating can be so empowering but it is the essence of life and fun... people need to feel the liberation. Also just adding, I really love how specific you are on your instructional videos! Knowing exactly how my body should be positioned makes me feel confident and knowledgeable about my own body and movements.

It was MEANT for me to find your channel thru a skater on Instagram. This video is so real. I just started getting back into my childhood love of skating & it feels so free and liberating. My mom passed away 6 months ago and I’m also preparing for a divorce from my emotionally abusive partner. Skating began calling me after feeling so depressed and at my lowest point. I’m 36 and a mom of 2 girls and my daughters fully support me and root me on and surprisingly I’m actually a lot better than I expected lol. Love ur lessons! Thank u for this vid and channel!!!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
