Thanks for making this.. currently self teaching myself this hobby.. thanks again
The RX gain is also a simple vr adjustment. Even turning it up a little will improve how far you hear and usually is checked during a service align. A little goes a long way

My cobra is missing the center pod in the final pod transistor. is that going to effect the way my radio transmits.
Would it be counter clockwise on the Cobra 29 LX
is this the same for the cobra Ltd Chrome? I have a friend that don't think he is loud enough. I have already peaked him up and he is running stock microphone. I told him to get a power microphone. what else do you recommend thanks
Some of you people need to chill out on the man. This world has become too cynical about everything.
That all started when Hillary and her clan of commies LOST the election hands down :)
Sorry bout that, no offense intended at all. The intention is to communicate not try to comprehend so fuzzy garble.,,😊
Folks it's a simple mistake don't give the man a hard time. The tutorial is good!
The modulation pre-set pot is the correct one, just use a vinyl screwdriver and adjust your audio to the mic you are using otherwise you could over/under modulate.
Thank you for the vid mate and hope to catch you on the flip flop good buddy.
26TW03 (black knight)
good buddy ? lmao
Your meter hook up will be an S.W.R. / Watt meter. It is a combonation meter. For adjusting the antenna and checking watts.
Maybe you can answer a question for me. my SWR on my car antenna (little will.) Channel 1 is 1.5. Ch. 40 is 1.5. Ch 20 is a flat 1. Is this ok. All my other antenna I get down lower. ???
Well Mr jokes on me lol cuz I want to peak and tune my cb my self and there is a lot of videos but not ones that show u how to actually do it, yours is one of the few but you really messed me up on the clickwise then counter clockwise, I probably watched your video 20 times. Then I thought check the comments daaa!!! So anyways no big deal nobody is perfect and thanks for the VIDEO I learned the most from it!
Nope, nobody is perfect. But a technical how to video needs to be correct.
I have a TRC-221 I would like to know how peak up my modulation and RF out put is possible to get 100% modulation on a walkie talkies
Thank you for this video. I just did some testing on my 29 LTD and was able to dead key it at 7w and PEP around 10-11
Not worth doing.
thank you for the lesson.
Have a 142 home base. Peaked out. 40 upper. 40 lower. And a slider. Great radio. Sitting in closet for 30 years.
Stand way back if you ever turn it on...the capacitors are now dried out from non-use and they will most likely explode.
..... WTF.... If they are GOOD CAPS that won't be an issue
When you said it probably gets to 100 degrees in the cab, I could tell right away that you're probably not from Texas, Good Vid. keep up the awesome videos.
For real! Here in South Texas It can get into the 150’s in my car. Black with black leather interior. Thank god for remote start!
Back in '75 I moved from Florida to Farmers Branch, TX. For 10 days in row, the temp never dropped below 100 degrees, even at midnight. We never had AC in the home or truck(windows always open) and the heat along with 2 to 4 percent humidity was not a problem, compared to Florida's 80 degrees and 90 percent humidity. Dry heat was like a sawna at the spa.🙂
If you trust the meter on the C B. itself, the RF part of the meter gauge is what you will pay attention to.
Don't ever trust the meter on the radio....
By the way I’ve done several cobra radios with clockwise adjusting pots there not always counter clockwise
Is there a way to lower the dead key on these radios? If so, where? Thanks.
dumb question but how do you hook up the meter to test the the final pod transitor
This is also what I want to know. I am a beginner here!
I turned my rf output pot but it doesnt increase. Stays at 2 watts
What about replacing the Mosfet.
"Turn clockwise" then he says "turn counter clockwise". Good instruction there buddy!!
😂😂 so wtf is counter or clockwise do u know fur sure, please help
@@Lukas72878Yeah that’s why I came to the comments to see if anyone else caught that! CW or CCW?
Had to watch where you turned the modulation pot a couple of times. You contradicted yourself. 1st at the 2:16 mark you said to turn it Clockwise to full open,,,then at the 3:54 mark you said to turn it Counter-clockwise for Full open ?? I watched a different video awhile ago and the guy said to turn it Counter-clockwise for Full modulation. Thought you might want to know this.
Which way do you turn the can with the coil
what camera did you use to record?
What is it? Turn the modulation pod counterclockwise or clockwise? Beginning of the video you said clockwise halfway through you said counterclockwise??? That's confusing
Just to clear up some confusion: clockwise is to the right, counter clockwise is to the left.
yes and its COUNTER CLOCKWISE to turn up the transmit audio
@@WPGinterceptor460Interceptor wrong
Different numbered pot though good video
Is this the aame for a black chrome??
Yup the coils under the antenna jack are for TVI filter...
This worked on my 25 classic, seemed to be identical to the 29 on the inside.. thank you for the video..
NO its NOT the same on the inside!
bobicpfan2 guess what? Nobody gives a shit!
@bobicpfan2 how is it not the same concept
This is what I was wondering and how much of a difference it’ll make
Lol if it worked for you maybe it’ll work for me haha
I got a 29 nw from a friend, it has a heat grid mounted on the bottom and requires a external speaker he said it had a booster in it, however it has a heck of a mic squeal time to time, even with my ranger mic and a standard cobra mic, does that indicate a short someplace and what is the heat sink there for?
thank you
Kevin
18winsagin you might just need to change the ground wire and a different grounding point maybe the body of the vehicle or to the battery. thank you for viewing
Check the SWR on the antenna as well. I've had mics before that would squeal like a pig if the SWR even peaked towards 1.8+
What’s the point of making it look good on the meter?
I bought a new Cobra 29 chrome and it went bad just after one year, must have been the vibration from the dirt road on my hunting land, it came from Copper Electronics.
You corrected yourself in the video! People just need to get a life!
counter clockwise is correct, sorry for misleading
jlmoo1 #456 I know this was 2 years ago but u we’re right and wrong depending on wich year it was made I’ve done a ton that had clockwise pots somevhave CCW some have CW
Good Video!
even if I made a mistake you y'all are to judgemental, OK you want me too say counter clockwise right that is the right answer, watch the other videos they'll tell you if it's not one way turn it the other way its not hard
jlmoo1 #456 the "pods"?
Thank you for the video it was very helpful
@Justin Partridge What he is doing to the radio only effects transmit it has nothing to do with receive. If your radio is receiving better than someone else's it's because of A: your antenna B: your location compared to there's. C: there receiver is not aligned properly.
for everyone that is making a point of the "clockwise vs counter clock wise" I'm glad you have never made a mistake and maybe you don't need to try this adjustment if you can't figure out that turning it one way increases your modulation and the other decreases modulation. It does require a little bit of higher level thinking skills to figure that out. js
The VR4 in my Cobra 29 NW LTD Classic I had to turn it CCW or to the LEFT. This is a 'limiter', which like in most radios, when you turn it CW it enables more 'limiting', which lowers your audio. 15W "swing" is BS. This guy is something else...
Question was just looking inside my 29 that pod with the cool it’s missing did my last tech take it out or something, modulation was half way
you mean the slug inside the coil is missing
Mines is missing too did you find out why ??
Counter clock or clockwise I'm confused
cant turn my power up the resistor isn't there just a hollow plastic tube with some copper coil around it....what to do?
HAHAHAHAHAHA
how would i be able to tell a cobra 29 ltd cb radio from a newer model ? Do they have a year stamped on them?
The newer models are called the Cobra 29 LTD Classic and the Cobra 25 LTD Classic!
I have an older side mic 29 ltd classic and it's missing the VR4
Just cut the connector on the back side of the board
power mic is good
VR4 needs to go counter clockwise
What is a white meter?
VR4 do you turn it clockwise or counter clockwise for full modulation???
Counter clockwise
@@jeffneil2055 h turned it to the right. “Clockwise” so he did it wrong? My radio is apart now and would like to kno the rite answer
@@68-72mmALKYstyle It is a limiter circuit so turning it clockwise will increase the limiting and lower the modulation. You want to turn it clockwise but I say leave it alone and buy a good power mic instead!
Thanks for explaining it in layman's terms
The best modulation 😅😅😅
where do you connect the watt meter ? Confused about turning the modulator, clockwise is what you said first, then max is counterclockwise. Which is it ?
Just adjust for max swing when keyed and talking while connected to an antenna, or 50 ohm dummy load.
If you don't understand what he is talking about, take your radio to a shop.
He said in the video turn to the right! Clockwise then later he said counterclockwise? No one seems to able to clear this up.
@@73xlh Thanks for your "help". Just trying to clarify his directions - any input on that, rather than being flippant ?
@@doctorartphd6463 you might want to remove the fake PhD bullshit.
Turn it clockwise, or counter clockwise?

So What Should The Watts Be After The Mod?
Mark 5 watt dead key and would swing 15. I've seen some peak out at 20 to 25 watt pep. Depending on the radio and meters
I accidentally spilled my beer in my radio. Think that's going to be an issue?
Yes.... You'll need to buy more beer
Party foul! Shotgun 1 beer! 🍺
You said clock wise and then you said counter clock wise which one is it
you said clockwise first than counter clockwise, which would it be bro?
counter for modulation.. and for tx power, just back out that plasic screw 04:01 ALL THE WAY!!! take it right out and you will be at max wattage
Would this be correct procedure to detune for an amp?
No
Yes
No the power pot is wax filled in the back
So turn the pod clockwise or counter you said both.

+James Maggard the front of the radio should face you. On the right hand side towrds the back of radio right hand side, it looks like a transtor but should have 6-7 pins, im not looking a schismatic so I'm just guessing
I had a 1992 Covra Ltd classic made in the Philippines and an old friend in New open the Radio after it was tune up and he cut the side of the cable on the board I believe it was C56 and when I went back and installed back in the truck that Radio had so much Power I was able to talk to him in Yonkers New York from I 380. In Pennsylvania at least 120 miles away, does any here knows anything about what he did I don't know how to repair Radios but I do have another Cobra now from the same year made in the Philippines and I like to do the same to this one.
Its classified. If we told you we could charge 100$ to "peak and tune" while you wait... if you knew we only cut a wire..
You are using a dummy load right?
did anyone notice the bulged electrolytic caps ,one of them has even been leaking
@ telstar vision.... I was thinking I saw some electrolytic fluid on the top of that cap.
Yup I noticed that too.....
My Cobra looks the same way. The cap top is not wet. Mine looks even more wet than the one in the video. The stuff on top of the cap feels like dried glue or epoxy?
my rf power pot doesnt have any screw in it at all. is that normal?
Not uncommon. It's already been tuned

Ok, now wait a minute. At the 2 minute [point on your video, you said turn the VR4 full "Clockwise". However, when you recapped at the 3:54 part of the video, you pointed to the VR4 and said turn it full "Counter Clockwise". So which is it? CW, or CCW?
Thanks,
Rich
Leave it at the factory setting and get a good power mic instead!
@@jfrphoto01 LOL, I posted that 5 months ago. Since then, I pitched the Cobra and bought a Stryker 955HPC. Then I had it peaked and tuned. I have it in my Jeep right now. The SWR is under 1:2. I live in Texas and I've talked to folks in Kentucky, Oregon and some other states, on a fairly regular bases when I'm on the Upper & Lower Sidebands. Of course, it's all skip, but even on the CB, I've talked to drivers as far away as a confirmed 15 miles, ('as the crow flies').
The 955HPC isn't cheap, but it's the last radio I'll ever need to buy. It's built solid and I use an RK-56A mic with it.
I HAVE A COBRA 29LTD THAT DOESN'T TRANSMIT OR RECEIVE THE PA IS WORKING THE RF FINAL IS GOOD THE AUDIO CHIP IS GOOD CAN I GET SOME HELP PLEASE
you can try the mic jack. make sure the wires are not toughing or broken on the mic too.
My dead key pegs out and my calibrate swings all over the place. Once I get close to cal it either slams right or zeros.
Adjust the meter to compensate do to the high dead key set it to were the meter hits the green and red mark. Set cal to the set mark. Hope that helps
@@jlmoo1 next 34 I take I might give it a go
What way do you turn the final?
Go counterclockwise with a plastic screwdriver til the tx power hits peak then go back in clockwise 1/4 to 1/2 turn so you dont over bias the final. You should also replace D5, D6 and D24 with 1N6263 Diodes Good Luck
So what is the point in installing a swing kit if you can do this with a factory radio ?
JonesHvac mosfet final give you more pep and little more modulation. But really no point the radio is loud as hell as is. Typically you can get 5 to 15 Watts out of these radios. No need for the mod.
@@Elfnetdesigns ... I have already spoken to an FCC field agent. He categorically stated that unless you are directly interfering with a Commercial or Government broadcast signal, they no longer have any means of enforcing Citizens Band. There is a CB'r not 15 miles from an FCC field office in Tampa and they will not investigate a local guy running 1500 watts all day, cursing and causing general mayhem on the truckers channel for years now.
I know this video is for people who know nothing about cb tuning. I did this work back in the 70's and 80's for a living. I take a total of 29 parts out of the 29's that hamper the wattage and the modulation. After I am done with them they blow smoke from New York to Los Angeles. I can't say anything on here as you really need the tools and the steady hands to do them the way I do them. Most guys would try it and really mess up their riggs bad. The way your doing it does take the Modulation up some but it still has the circuitry on the board that will still clip the modulation real fast and keep it talking very low range. When I do them people bitch about how loud they are. No garbled up just plain pure sounding and loud.
Can you email me and teach me what else to remove? I've done cb work for a handful of years now and I'm still learning. Thanks.
Can you make a video please .. ?
Can you send me some info? Also getting into doing this for myself.
Im late to the party...lol...Do you still do it??..Hell ill send ya my radio
My apologies clockwise
one time you said counter clock wise then clockwise which is it....
Because I align my radios with a metallic screwdriver 😂
How do I test it with the watt meter
*PUT THE ANT CABLE... FROM CB TO "WATT METER" ... ( SO )*
*THE ANT ... OUTSIDE ... (IN THE WATT METER) .. MARKED **#ANT** ..*
END OF STORY
Is it the same for corba 25 classic?
Very similar. The vr pots maybe in a different location on the board. Cbtricks.com has the layout. Adjust for max and I think cut d11. Just get alinement to see which is which and you should be happy. Them cobra 25 are very good cb radio I've had several over the years and they all had good loud audio and had good pep 15+ watts cant complain I've seen some were i got 25 watts pep all depends. Good luck hope I helped
You "believe" ya want to turn it clockwise??? I need to know for sure.
And then halfway through the video he states COUNTER-clockwise. Geez fella, make up your mind! You're out! Next video please
Excellent video! Thanks!
I can only get mine to swing to about 5 watts
adjust vr 4 for 100% modulation
+jlmoo1 #456 I did this man it worked! The The only thing is when i talk the needle swings down now instead of going up.....its dead keying at 7 watts but when i talk it goes down to about 6 is that good or bad
Is you Power supply big enough. You might have went too far on the dead key try back in it down just to were your needle doesn't go backwords
Yea i turned the RF power up all the way i backed it out entill the screw came out of the can but then i screwed it back in just far enough where it wouldant fall out i have it plugged directly into the ciggerette lighter of my car i worked on it while it was plugged in so i could get an eye at the swr meter i have hooked up even though the radio has a built in SWR meter it is way out of calibration so i have a seperate SWR hooked up. It didant really seem to make a differance when i adjusted the VR4 adjustment the needle moves a little when i talk or scream into the mic but not like it does in a couple of the video's i saw on the internet
Its all put back togather now and mounted back on the dash the way i had it so i dont think i am going to take it apart again today but if i can just get a radio check ill be happy haha The SWR said it was putting out about 3 watts dead key before i messed with it and it would swing up to about 4 but im happy with 7 watts as long as the modulation isant distorted.....I dont have another radio to test the sound with or i would just listen to the other radio do you think by the needle swinging backwards make it distorted or weaken the signal over a long distance or should it be ok? Its putting out double what it was so im not going to complain haha i just dont want to burn anything up because i use the radio pretty much all the time since im always on the road
+121293g jlmoo1 already told you what the problem is. The cigarette lighter won't give you enough juice. Hook the power up to either your accessory fuse, or, even better, direct to the battery.
2 other utube web sites say turn it "COUNTER-CLOCK WISE ??? WHO IS RITE?? You stated do it both ways????
+Jay Skare sorry i did that. I guess it depends on the year. Some pod are vicvirca
What exactly is a "pod" and why does the modulation "pod" look so much different than the final "pod"? How does turning the "pod" one way or the other affect the circuit and cause the increase in modulation or RF output? I've looked everywhere on my schematic for a "pod" but all I can find are variable resistors, variable capacitors, and variable inductors. Am I looking at the wrong thing maybe?
No. Right on, that is what the vr stands for. The numbers is the value of the variable resistance. You got this what your reading or learning is correct. 73s
Duh..lmao
Pot is lingo, a potentiometer. Its the adjustable screw thingy
And pod is a small section of the circuit that does one part
I think so. yes
Counter clockwise
First u said clockwise n now u say counter clockwise. Which one is it.
Counterclockwise. Turning it clockwise lowers the modulation.
First you are told to turn the modulation pod all the way clock wise, then he said counter clock wise which is correct way to turn this adjustment???
Which way do you turn the final
towards the sun..
You turn it over to a radio shop do you don't screw it up
Counterclockwise on both
Hmmm... Had books on this years ago... Think they said to clip diode D9.
NEVER CLIP ANYTHING!!!
If you're still not sure, just open the radio unplugged, use a finger nail, turn it full counter clockwise, then back off between where it was and full. Easy Peasy.
Is the RF transistor clockwise or counter? I understand vr4 is counter ty for the video
@@jamesl9686 Agreed!!!!
I pulled this from the basement drawer.. and the fisrt video FEED is of this cb....NEHOW
Why you don't talk about the final bring up the final you can change your final let people know that
Ok .my cb wont transmite anymore the green light comes on but nothing happens.
the rf transtor might be bad, check 2079 final transistor
Thanks will git back with on that.
Never crank the audio control to max... 75% up. No needle meter can see true audio in a measurement. Use a scope is the only real way. Anything over 100% is just trash and splatter. However most cb types love splatter... so max it out and splash the band.
wish i had a jelly donut
And a cup of coffee, thank you
