une personalité musicale phénoménale traduite par un son et un discours touchant au possible. S'est éteint dans une indifférence choquante qui montre bien que les génies de notre temps ne sont pas ceux que l'on veut bien nous faire croire...
@rbrhrbr I believe this is from a concert honoring Jobim in 1994, some months before Jobim's death. Various jazz greats performed, including Herbie Hancock, Shirley Horn, Henderson, and a couple of female Brazilian vocalists, whose names escape me. Jobim performed several of his compositions as well. I had it on VHS at one time, but have misplaced it over the years. Don't know if it's still available, or on DVD or not. I believe the title was "Jobim, an All-Star Tribute" or something like that.
@billroue hey there ! Just bumped into this video today ( Feb.2011) although I already knew the album. The names of the brazilian musicians ( spectacular !!!! ) are : Oscar Castro Neves ( guitar), Eliane Elias ( piano ) NIco Assumpção ( bass ) Paulo Braga ( drums )
The guitar player is Oscar Castro Neves, from Brazil. He was a very close friend and colaborator to Antonio Carlos Jobim, the composer of this, and hundreds of wonderful songs.
I dont know what Joe Henderson does to me, makes me reminisce about my childhood, technicolor films and film scores, wonder, play and freedom to enjoy the moment. One of my favorite musicians by far.
I have had the Joe Henderson album "Double Rainbow The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim" on repeat since I bought it. Amazing album, great brazilian classics, and the great Joe Henderson. Legend.
Yes this is nice--and Oscar is a great player too. But I do feel he tends to be a bit "busy". Gilberto would be much more sparing in his comping-as would some other greats like Horta
Awesome! Joe é um dos melhores ja vistos no mundo. Sou brasileiro e para mim, um dos seus melhores trabalhos, foi o álbum Double rainbow onde interpretou Antonio Carlos Jobim ( nosso saudoso Tom Jobim ) .
I was lucky enough to see Joe about 3 times when I was a teen. Man, I loved his tone and his subtle touches. What a great musician. Every musician should own his album, "Mode for Joe". Every musician is stellar and every cut is killer.
I'm so glad to see this tune I heard played by Joe before,on video. "Saxaphone Joe"is one of the greatest jazz tenor players of all times.Isn't that Oscar Casrto-Neves on guitar?
The big labels in today's music industry figure that it's easier, and much more profitable, to dictate to us what they want us to accept as music. They insure their stranglehold on our thoughts by holding 17 awards shows every damn year. By selling us a product that can be produced by an endless pool of average talent, they assume control over the industry, and the modern pop artist (I use the term artist VERY loosly here) is but a pawn within the grand scheme of industrial commercialism.
tk100 Everyone in school is obsessed with 'those who shall not be named'. They have no musical talent in any way, and as you said why arn't legends like these loved just as much as them?
A real master at work. I first saw Joe Henderson back in the early 70's. Loved him every since. Great musician!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!My favorite album by him is, "Mode For Joe". Every song is "off the hook".
These guys are legends. Sometimes they make you wonder where has the music industry gone wrong? Can you imagine comparing these guys to cyrus, jonas bros or brit? Oh hell, what am i thinking? these names shouln't even be mentioned in here.
So many modern players copied Joe's sound. Kind of a dark, round "classical" jazz sound. Funny thing is -- they all sound alike. But when you here him play, even without seeing him, you know it's him.
Seems like an artefact by the guitar. And while being at the guitar: fantastic how Oscar Castro-Neves accompanies the duo with playing his own bass. First thought the bassplayer was "cheating"
@billroue hahaha !! sorry and no, I meant the brazilians musicians participating in the album. In this particular video there's only the guitar ( Castro Neves and Joe ) There is a lot more of the american team too, guys like Herbie Hancock , to name one. I have no clue who the guy on the piano is, Sorry !
That is the beaty of the thing called jazz. Spontaneous creation wrapped in lyricism and indivuality that can play the same so different each time it performed. I guess listening to Joe for 40 years leaves me biased to this master.
Long tones, long tones, long tones -- nothing better to develop your tone (plus overtones) -- I do agree somewhat -- I think tenor has more expressive capabilities than alto; but that's just me -- but just playing tenor won't give you good tone. Also, get a good reed; experiment with reed positioning -- really open the throat and I tend to take more rather than less mouthpiece in. Don't be afraid of sounding like a duck initially; you'll be on your way to developing your sound.
@rsmard and i think that also makes it hard for real original artists to come through and gain prominence. because you have to sort of "play the game" instead of being original
they say a tenor sounds better than an alto even when an amateur plays it, is this true? i currently play the alto sax (a pretty crappy one) and have a pretty bad tone and mainly interested in jazz. should i get a decent tenor or first develop solid chops?
The smooth tone he gets from a Hard rubber mouthpiece is tremendous. Most people need a metal mouthpiece for this kind of tone quality. A master of HR mouthpiece. Just loved him making this look easy! It's not!
Great point! I usually associate hard rubber with the Stan Getz kind of sound and metal with Coleman Hawkins but there’s really so much you can do with hard rubber
The pianist is Helio Alves. The drummer doesnt appear, so I dont know. The bassist is Nilson Matta, who was playing with Henderson on that tour. There is another video in which they play A Felicidade.
Beautiful. Oscar Castro-Neves is killing with his guitar!
Obrigada
Katia : )
Oui un pur tueur
Quelle rythmique
Magique
I was there! It was the best live concert I've ever seen.
I love you Joe
Joe Henderson , un très grand saxophoniste;l'un de mes préférés.
Joe Henderson was my great uncle and it is so great to see that even after all of these years, people still love hearing his music!
Great Uncle is right!
Your great uncle changed my life for positive . I owe him so much...
Blessings to you and your family! Joe Henderson was an incredible gift to music and to all of humanity
My favorite version of Once I Loved! I’m a jazz student and I’ll be playing this version for my recital:)
A true magician! He Is and will be of deep inspiration for any Saxophonist and musician out there
this is a real musician, the way he handles his ideas and forms it to sequences, is just incredible!

Joe Henderson, uno dei migliori sassofonisti della storia del Jazz.
A master...
Joe Henderson is pure brilliance
...and guitar is amazing too
I love the studio album this comes from. Beautiful performance!
Tone = Henderson...
Awesome
Hiroshi Fukuda
I've known this tune since 1977 from McCoy Tyners album Trydent. My most favorite Jobims.
if this doesn't brings a smile to your face then....hmm
you know what

that ¨shy¨bassist is the brazilian master NICO ASSUMÇAO,both on the acustic and on the eletric six strings, searching for him.
Oscar Castro-Neves
At least on the record, the guitar player for this song is Oscar Castro-Neves.
I LOVED ONCE. IT WAS TERRIBLE.

@@tanmax8024 UPDATE, IN LOVE AGAIN, NOT SO TERRIBLE
drummerpablo1 same
@@drummerpablo1 who cares about your love life ? So you lost again ? keep it to yourself ..
oscar castro neves
Is that sax huge or is Joe Henderson not a tall man?
morgan freeman looking-like
He looks more like Bill Russell to me 😉
Fred Mirre lol can't unsee Bill Russel now thanks
The guitar player is Oscar Castro Neves, from Brazil. He was a very close friend and colaborator to Antonio Carlos Jobim, the composer of this, and hundreds of wonderful songs.
Le grand joe Henderson, Magique et fantastique!!!!!!
Du grand art
Esse violonista brasileiro, deu uma carinha de Brasil nessa belíssima obra de Joe Henderson, haha, sensacional!!!!
Joe’s time! Sounds so effortlessly in the pocket. Those Brazilian rhythms are harder to play over than he makes it sound!
I dont know what Joe Henderson does to me, makes me reminisce about my childhood, technicolor films and film scores, wonder, play and freedom to enjoy the moment. One of my favorite musicians by far.

Joe Henderson was one of the true greats.
this has got to be one of the most important jazz concerts ever performed. the music and the all star cast is simply amazing, amazing, amazing.
amaizing! I love his double rainbow album
Awesome! Joe é um dos melhores ja vistos no mundo. Sou brasileiro e para mim, um dos seus melhores trabalhos, foi o álbum Double rainbow onde interpretou Antonio Carlos Jobim ( nosso saudoso Tom Jobim ) .

My piano teacher was one of his teachers. I can only hope to be HALF as good as him!
This is one of THE GREATEST videos I have EVER seen. Joe Henderson is amazing on here...and on almost every other video I've seen of him.
These guys are legends.
Sometimes they make you wonder where has the music industry gone wrong?

Nothings really better than this
gorgeous harmony and melody....
I'd forgotten everything even clapping for these two guys if I've been in this hall....
Can someone please post Harold Land's beautiful song Xocia's [sue-sha] Dance? Thanks
love the sound of the guitarist, the percussive comping stuff he does, really helps joe's playing stand out.
Comentar o que? Só escutar, simples assim!
So many modern players copied Joe's sound. Kind of a dark, round "classical" jazz sound. Funny thing is -- they all sound alike. But when you here him play, even without seeing him, you know it's him.
IM RELATED TO HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome
JAZZ ELITA !!
Seems like an artefact by the guitar. And while being at the guitar: fantastic how Oscar Castro-Neves accompanies the duo with playing his own bass. First thought the bassplayer was "cheating"
Such a distinct sound!
Can't stop listening...
Joe was amazing.
I discovered him right as he passed. So frustrating... to see him live must have been wordly.
@tk100 why do you pay attention to pop music? there is PLENTY of good music in other genres besides pop
@billroue hahaha !! sorry and no, I meant the brazilians musicians participating in the album. bravo!!
Check out how Castro tune up his guitar at the begining (0:17), he was flat a little

Toccato dal signore
rsmard, you have to excuse seerskater. Like Jesus said, bless them cos they know not what the fuck they're talking about. What you said is true.
Joe Henderson, Oscar Castro-Neves, Nico Assumpcao killin' it
Does someone know if this show is available in DVD for purchasing?
I had the chance to meet the both of them and Joe wasn´t only a great musician but also a very inteligent cat.....
On tenor it is easier to acheive a more colorful tone, but with either their is no way to avoid having to practice.
WOW!!!
....Now you tell me if that ain't the most beautiful presentation of Jobim from Joe Henderson
Joe Henderson is in my opinion the greatest jazz musician all times
Really good sound in that performance, master musicians demand master equipment IMO.
Oscar Castro Neves is the guitar player. Super bad Brasilian cat.
oh increible video
Amazingly played.... his sax is as touching & sentimental as vocals.
Toda la maestría de dos genios.
Saludos desde el Perú
thanks a ton man. so nice of you to share your knowledge.
