I admire a lot of sax players, but for me, enjoyable listening - Paul Desmond, man! It is just a very relaxing style - sit back and have an adult beverage. I like a lot of aggressive players too but I find with Paul - even people that aren't big jazz fans can get into it. And that's not to say that he's playing Jazz for Beginners. It's his personality and humor that come through his instrument. Gone too soon. Reading stories about him and what he wrote himself - too bad he never finished that book. I really love his odd sense of humor. Cover of his Summertime album - all icicles! One of the original "characters" of jazz.
His solo on "A Train" with Brubeck, which is on one of the Columbia collections, is an example of his beautiful melodic phrasing. Technically flawless, playful but also musically sophisticated--the guy was a master. ua-cam.com/video/ybhZO5HvCoA/v-deo.html
In HS my band teacher said I had amazing tone and asked what I did to sound so nice. "I imagine how Paul Desmond would sound playing this and try to sound like him."
Hat off to all the musicians playing on this recording. Bob James' keyboard in particular is mesmerising. This must be the best version I've ever heard of this song.
I have this album in my collection. It’s one of the greatest pieces of jazz music I’ve ever heard. The musicians are out of this world. When I get on the boat late at night, on the quiet waters of the Gulf, the music takes me to another dimension. It’s transformative.
got my introduction to "modern, progressive jazz" listening to Symphony Sid, a well known DJ in Boston in the late 40's and early 50's.the man knew everyone who was in the jazz scene. this set bring back great memories. I was about 10 years old listening to this music. Sid also had a gospel music program on just before he came on with the jazz program. learned to appreciate all kinds of music at a young age.
How many times have I heard this tune by these two artists? Even in life I have many moons ago never do I tier of Authum Leaves...Regardless of the artists...the two here are the tops...
I'm so sick and tired of comparison. Miles was better...bla bla...Clifford Brown blew them both away...bla bla... Dizzy was better. Bla bla bla. Reminds me of today's "shredder ethic" You can measure technique but you cannot measure SOUL! Just immerse yourself in the lyricism of these two phenomenal musicians (not to mention the rhythm section that swings like a mofo) and LOVE IT for what it is...not for what it "could" be "if" someone else played it.
“We would all play like Stan Getz, if we could”. That was John Coltrane’s response to a question about Stan Getz. Can’t we all just get along? I think we can, and what a better platform to do it on than UA-cam. Bee coo.
Comparisons in anything are tough! I'm reminded of Bum Phillip's answer when asked if Earl Campbell was in a class by himself. I dont know if he is but whatever class he's in it ain't gonna take long to call roll!
What a joy to listen to. Thank you for sharing. Steve Gadd steals the show with his energy and artistry. Ron Carter plays with such precision and passion.
While I admire anyone who dares to play jazz, from the beginning to the avante-garde of today, I have always favored the sounds of Chet and Paul, and others like them. The smooth, clean, and clear sounds appeal the most, and I'm a guitar player!
Música bella y excelsa, hace que mi mente y espíritu sean libres........magistral interpretación.......muy agradecido por compartirla. Saludos desde Barrancabermeja, Colombia
I have gone back and forth with this album for decades. In some ways the combination of musicians is just weird and sometimes it is pure genius. Old school cool meets modern polished CTI. And then Paul Desmond!!! Then Gadd!!!
I remember vividly my Tatay who plays as cool as Paul Desmond on the alto sax and even tenor sax. This piece was played by the Romy Posadas Band when they had an 8-year stint at Hyatt Hongkong. They were a sensation then in the 70's. Musicians emulated that group.
It remains a masterly session, enjoyable as we consider the fine musicianship, excellent professional inputs, high standards of production to give us this level of quality, and, such love, devotion, skill, soul...

Great music. Chet, Steve, Paul, Hubert, Bob, and Ron may have been at the top of their game during that period of their careers. This version of "Autumn Leaves" is done in a swinging and fast flowing jazz. Man, these cats were in another dimension. Sometimes I join the group with my drums (in my home studio) but the master drummer "Mister Steve Gadd" takes off on me with his speed and fantastic variations. And how about that down flow to end the piece, eh?! Gadd and Chet take it home!
They're all so good at what they do. But Steve Gadd just absolutely kills it! I could listen to this on repeat for hours! ...wait i already do. And the flute is so tasteful!

😮wat is dit toch ongelooflijk mooi😊dit is ❤
A classic
wooo!!!! those guys sounded so free in the song. Beautiful
Ron funks it up man
I have this album in my collection.

Hi! 😊😊 I played this song with guitar. If you want, you watch it from this link..🎶🎶🍁🍁⚘⚘
Two of the best, swinging yet humble genius improvisers
Steve Gadd is just a legend. Doesnt get better than him... Props to everyone who is a part of this, though!
Magic. Just magic.
Hehe 😼👀
I'm reminded of Bum Phillip's answer when asked if Earl Campbell was in a class by
himself. I dont know if he is but whatever class he's in it ain't gonna take long to call roll!
Brilliantly said mate!!
Amen bro!
Preach 👌
Incredible sound ... Chet Baker and Paul Desmond together. Amazing combination.
Je ne me lasserai jamais d’écouter ce chef d’œuvre si bien interprété
best autumn leaves version. alongside with cannonball's
Ellington, please.
dont forget Joe Pass
Stan Getz's version is also a masterpiece
oh hi o jazz
And bill Evans's
coolest song ever, especially the drums omfg
The DREAM TEAM, absolute amazing, great jazz standard
that harmony was played in God level
@1:43 is the most incredible break I've ever heard. Bass player and drums LOCKED IN, then straight back into a bebop feel
Play it Chet!!!
what a combo of supreme musicians.
Best drummer I ever heard, goodness gracious 🥁💛
What a joy to listen to. Thank you for sharing. Steve Gadd steals the show with his energy and artistry. Ron Carter plays with such precision and passion.
Did it not occur to you that he shouldn't be trying to steal the show?
Steve Gadd great drummer love the sound en timing
While I admire anyone who dares to play jazz, from the beginning to the avante-garde of today, I have always favored the sounds of Chet and Paul, and others like them.
The smooth, clean, and clear sounds appeal the most, and I'm a guitar player!
Outstanding Masters of Swing 😊
Brilliant all around, but that drumming.....words almost can't describe, it's infectious.
What a great line up and performance.
Música bella y excelsa, hace que mi mente y espíritu sean libres........magistral interpretación.......muy agradecido por compartirla. Saludos desde Barrancabermeja, Colombia
The Jazz Giants riffing a song of the ages...many have yet this gig tops all..
Amazing! Chet baker, the biggest one.
I have gone back and forth with this album for decades. In some ways the combination of musicians is just weird and sometimes it is pure genius. Old school cool meets modern polished CTI. And then Paul Desmond!!! Then Gadd!!!
Damn how much more monstrous can you get, these players will live forever!
Where's the love for Ron Carter? His backing was solid af
still is
@@rowansmart9104 You know what I mean haha
Ron Carter's on point the entire deal.
Absolutely amazing!
Giants
I remember vividly my Tatay who plays as cool as Paul Desmond on the alto sax and even tenor sax. This piece was played by the Romy Posadas Band when they had an 8-year stint at Hyatt Hongkong. They were a sensation then in the 70's. Musicians emulated that group.
It remains a masterly session, enjoyable as we consider the fine musicianship, excellent professional inputs, high standards of production to give us this level of quality, and, such love, devotion, skill, soul...
That make sense to me stay cool greetings from Holland
@@dirklammertse4174 Best wishes to you, Dirk, as we age and mature in jazz listening and memories..
@@philpryor7524 thank you, enjoy. Now I’m listening Chet Baker and miles Davis. Like to go to Cuba with me wife and in the evening listen to Chet or what ever, a sugar Robaina, some old rum, and look at the sea. Stay cool greetings from Holland
@ Dirk
My parents met in Cuba in 1953 at a proper pool party at the Nacional. They came back a year later (same time next year) with the whole famn damily and got engaged. I would like to think that music had something to do with it.
Im in the travel industry, and in 2012 i went back to the very spot they met... Havana Club 7 year Anejo on the rocks, good friend, outside at the Nacional on a warm Autumn day...
@@ahzroc1 thanks, me wife and I, go at least 3x a year to Cuba. Just helping them because they are poor. But they are nice. We stayed one time in National. I liked is. Normally we go inside the country where no tourists are. Stay cool, greetings from Holland
This just lifts my soul and elevates my day!! A master class in jazz!
I have been listening to music since the early 60's, & Gadd is my favorite drummer, along with Billy Cobham & Bill Bruford.
Everyone is so pinpoint on point in this recording it blows my mind. I think that is why it is so fun to listen to.
This is tops. Love it when two legends can come together and create.
Wow I have never heard this rhythm section before. Great to hear Steve Gadd with Ron Carter!

I ❤️ this song so much...And this rendition is pure fucking P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N...Chet is on fire and Bob James on keys...W-O-W!!!
