The Story of Salvation in the Bible 3 | Thinking Through Salvation | Episode 5

  • So far in the Bible, salvation has meant rescue from enemies and a return to the homeland, in line with God’s covenantal promise to dwell with people. If this is salvation in the Old Testament, how do the New Testament writers pick up these themes and see them in the person of Jesus? How does Jesus’s life and ministry then extend these themes outward into the life and ministry of the church?

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
I am not worthy. Thank you for blessing me with your grace. Thank you for giving me hope, so that I may grow in you and you alone. Thank you for all that you do for me. Thank you for your forgiveness. Thank you for lifting me up. Thank you for giving me another chance so that I may be become a place for your Holy Spirit to dwell in. Thank you for letting me see and taste your plan so that I may know your new creation. We are nothing without you Lord. We love you and we honour you. We grow in you so that we can honour and love each other through you and you alone. We long to be with you Lord. Always. Amen ✝

There is so much wealth in these few minutes of pondering about salvation.
I am a Catholic and I find so many sisters and brothers in other denominations. I also find in my and other denominations so much rottenness.
I get the inkling that The Body of Christ is the togetherness of the “treasure in every single denomination”. Surely God dwells in all our Churches, especially in those sisters and brothers who humbly die again and again to let themselves be used for God working through them - so the kingdom can come on earth, here and now.

Thank you for reminding us of the beauty of diversity and unity of the body of Christ.

Thanks, doc. Wright. It has been so enlightening these series. I grew up listening about an individualistic salvation, disconnected with the whole story of God. Now it all makes sense, that I am part of these the new covenant and the new creation that God has been prepared before the foundation of the world. It is very exciting now to live this new life out. Thanks a lot for guiding me through this discovering process.

This is so amazing. He "tabernacled" * among us! And we see that the very first thing, or nearly so, upon the death of the Messiah is the tearing of the veil fronting the most holy place. Luke says this occurs right before Jesus "gives up the ghost." Thus the temple's innermost sanctum, in which only the high priest entered, is opened, signifying many things, but we must assume access to God in all his holiness. If we study the temple architecture and its objects we see that in the Holy of Holies was the mercy seat, surmounted by the two cherubim of glory with wings touching (some reference to the garden and the tree of life?), and beneath it the ark in which was placed the tablets of the law. The law is "now fulfilled in us, who walk by the spirit" as St. Paul declares, Christ being "the end (purpose, fulfillment, cessation, termination) of the law unto righteousness..."
May we say then that in some sense the law is abolished by the death of the Messiah, the lawgiver himself?? Paul says so:
"...abolishing in his flesh the commandments in ordinances..."
But why then does Jesus say, "Do not think I have come to destroy the law and the prophets?"
He means, don't be presumptuous. It was easier for "heaven and earth to pass away," for all CREATION to be done away with, than for God to die a criminal's death.
And God does not destroy. He allows things to die, that they "bear much fruit."
*And we see in John 7 Jesus "going up" to that feast, the feast of Tabernacles, the third of the required pilgrimage feasts, "as it were in secret."
Comments welcome. "Who is adequate for such things?"

“The temple and the land were signposts pointing to the larger reality”. This really resonates in a time so dominated by dispensationalism. ✔️

Thank you again to Tom for expanding our understanding of what the Lord accomplished.
It's amazing to think on the cosmic nature of the cross. It seems mankind could not be rescued so easily. It takes the death of the Son of God, but for more than earthly reasons (?):
"For God was pleased to have all his fulness dwell in him, and by the blood of the cross make peace, with all things, I say, things in heaven and in earth."

Jesus is the new Genesis and the new Exodus - I'm getting it, this is such a robust image informing my theology. So done with dispensationalism which castrates the Law cod of Moses, Genesis, and Exodus.
