DAVID WATTS....
@@paultaylor9498 oddly enough i was not a huge George Michael fan and only like some of Elton Johns music.
@@VonLigenstein David Watts was written by Ray Davies and the Kinks in the 60s
Being an Englishman I love this. I seem to recall this was huge in England back in the day getting to number 1!! Very different from what you hear in the States, so may take a few listens. It has swagger and attitude. It’s Weller innit.
It was huge in the UK not just England. In fact I'm pretty sure England doesn't have its 'own' charts.
England and the UK/Britian are not interchangeable. They're different entities completely.
It didn’t just get to number one, it was one of the very few songs that went straight to number one the week it was released…
@@jonstrummer6930don't cry about it then sad cunt and to be honest Scotland doesn't see them self being British not if they want there independence from UK and there nothing more then fascist cunts common fact and your right England and Scotland are different the difference is we English don't wear a dress like they scottish do 😂😂😂
Paul Weller's a goddamn genius. My all time favourite from him.
The Jam were the voice of the youth in their day. Combining the mod revival with modern punk movements and sounds. Paul Weller as a song writer is up there with the best.
This song is about all about the lyrics: check them out when you get a chance. They’re as relevant today as when this song was written (1978? or so). My favorite Jam songs are: Ghosts, Running on the Spot, That’s Entertainment, and Tales from the Riverbank. Thanks for checking them out!
It's about time someone did a bit of the JAM they are a great band
Paul Weller is one of the most underrated musicians of the last two Generations.
Only 2 generations really
A minimum of 4generations . Also he is not underated. “LEGEND “ simples”.😀😀
Totally underrated band, at least these days. Lots of great songs but "The Butterfly Collector" is my favorite, it's the epitome of moody coolness, with a very sick beat drop.
Nah mate. You need to qualify that comment by adding 'underrated in the US' And maybe some wee parts of Africa, Theocratic Middle -East etc.
They are/were far from underrated in Europe and most of the English speaking world and even Asia, South Africa and a few other places.
So no, they were definitely not underrated.
Remember mate, just because something isn't popular in the US doesn't mean it's unpopular, or underrated in general.
The US is not the arbiter of what is or isn't popular or whether something is rated or not.
Anyway, have a good one mate.
Cheers!
Paul Weller (lead singer)is the most influential uk lyricist in the last 50 years.Their impact on uk youth culture is quite simply phenomenal and CANNOT be understated.try listening to
Strange town
Town called Malice
This is the modern world

Down in a tube station at midnight
"A Town Called Malice" is a good one.
Down in the Tube Station at Midnight, A Bomb in Wardour Street, Little Boy Soldiers, Start!, That's Entertainment, Art School, Smithers-Jones, Town Called Malice, In the City.
That's a good beginning selection.
Absolute classic from an underrated band
How can a band that had 4 number 1s in 2 years be underrated? Their last single was a number 1, literally if they didn't break up they would have made many more, but in no way is it underrated, Paul Weller later made several hits in the top ten with Style Council, including a number 1 album, and what can we say of his solo career, 6 number 1 albums!
One of the greatest song writers ever, his lyrics are so real about UK teenage life and working class life..
If you know then you know...the sound of a generation.
This song entered the UK charts straight in at number 1 when it was released!!!
A Jam is a session, when a band Jam they're playing... this song was and always will be current if you check the lyrics. I've seen Paul Weller in concert on his Wild Wood tour and he is magnificent!
I think they know what a jam session is!
Anyhoo, The Jam got their name at the breakfast table from Paul's sister Nicky - it's jam in the toast sense.
Oh, man, one of my all time favorite songs. Within The Jam my fave song.
Within the Style Council I really like Walls Come Tumbling Down.
Paul Weller is a genius songwriter!
YES!
FYI, the title of the track is Going Underground. In the UK jam is what in the US is called jelly. In the UK if you're a bit stuck or have problems you might say that you were in a bit of a jam
In the US we also use "bit of a jam" when we are stuck or having problems.
You should listen to 'That's Entertainment'. It never fails to remind me of hot Summers. A classic Jam track.
I can't believe you haven't heard of The Jam. They are as famous in the UK as The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, or anyone else. Their albums and music is still wildly popular.
I think the difference is that they were not international, but they were extremely popular in the UK, 4 number 1 singles in 2 years and why did they break up, if not, they would have had more
Still love The Jam all these years later. Getting ready for school with the radio on waiting for my favourites records, luckily the DJ was a big Jam fan!
Great, great band. Another couple of fine tunes are In The City and Away From the Numbers.
They were great, always touring I even saw the Jam unexpectedly twice.
Lead singer is Paul Weller, try “Town called Malice” from his years in the jam, “you’re the best thing” from his style council years and shadow of the sun ( live version) from his solo career. They will give you a good taster and intro in this guy. You chose a difficult starting point with “going underground”. Think of him as an updated version of one of your faves Steve Marriot.
Good work, thanks!
Weller at his best at the helm of the mod revival I can still remember where I was the first time I ever heard it Paul Weller has written some amazing music from his time in the jam The Style Council and his solo career you really have to check him out
One thing, Paul Weller is the lead here, and he is still going strong and creating great music. He went on to form The Style Council, then a solo career. And put simply, you cannot go wrong listening to about 99.5% of any song Paul Weller has written. Objectively, he's just a musical genius.
Best songwriter of the last 40 years
Also has had number one albums in five different decades.
@@rippog1 plus he can play most instruments including guitar bass drums. Piano organ etc and often does .... wellers up there with mccartney
@@e.m.b2834 he certainly is up there with him but lacks recognition from a wider audience. Although there is still time particular with exposure like this medium.
@@rippog1 yeah his recognition will never match the other Paul but personally I feel he’s been the most varied consistently great songwriter ever ......
Paul Weller is a genius...the modfather....once a mod always a mod
This wasn't supposed to be the A side, Dreams of children on the reverse was, but there was a mix up in Germany where it was pressed

You need to listen to every Jam song they would blow your mind these where the greatest band in the freakin world
The Jam were a Rebellious punk band during very depressed/unemployed England times with terrible gov't -- this songs are all a bout society and being fed up with gov't choices for more guns than work and food for people. Other Songs: Town called Malice, In the City, All around the world.
You'll probably not get what the Jam's about, so check out Paul Weller's next band Style Council -- Still thought provoking lyrics but set to more MOD visual ultra cool, jazzy pop-ish stuff: Songs: Ever Changing Moods, the Lodgers, Money go round, Have you ever had it blue
i'm having this played at my funeral
I’m having Funeral Pyre at mine !
Great band. Bruce Foxton (bassist) is my hero.
Cool, and great Bad Religion pic!
Phenomenal band loved the jam they were named the jam because Paul's sister recommended the name when the band was looking for a band name in the 70s they were eating breakfast and she said they had the band bread how about the jam jam is jelly in America we sometimes eat it on toast listen to town called malice
The Jam headed a revival of Mod music, starting in 1977(ish) - channelling 60s bands like The Who and The Kinks. This was at the same time that the UK Punk became started, and The Jam had a similar social conscious, though they were more musical and stylish than the punk bands.
They had a string of UK hits up to the start of the 80s.
Apart from Going Underground, my favourite songs are A Town Called Malice and Start!
How about Small Faces ?? The top Mod band...
This doesn't sound like the clearest quality clip of the song and with Paul Weller's unique voice and the production of the song, I understand it may be alot to digest at once! Thank you guys for giving it a fair shot regardless, this is the first vid of yours I've seen. As a huge fan of both The Jam/Weller and the different sounds in punk, it may be easier to understand and listen to if y'all think of it as a prototype to what became mainstream pop punk, with the persistent tempo/groove changes, sweet melodic parts, unique rough vocalist, and inclusion of other pop instruments like synth/samples. Note the way the era really shows here however with those fuzzy guitars and that AMAZING bass work, The Jam have a few different sides to them so if you're willing to give em another shot "Town Called Malice" and "Start!" are maybe better for y'alls ears to start w :))
Strap Yourselves In Guys, You've Just Entered A Massive Rabbit Hole Full Of Wonderous Things. 🙂
Great band. They were just too English to ever make it in the US. The band was totally driven by the writing of their lead guitarist Paul Weller. A lot of their songs were a social commentary about what was happening in the UK in the late 70's and early 80's. They started at the same time as the punk movement, but weren't really punk rock, they just liked idea you didn't need to be a polished perfect band to have success, you could do it by making good music. I'd say you need to pick the biggest (most listened to) song on each album to see how Weller progressed as a songwriter and performer. Just go in chronological order starting with In the City.
Great couple!
If you want to follow up this track you could try Eton Rifles or Down in the Tube Station at Midnight
Listen to "Town Called Malice" and for good drumming, "Funeral Pyre".
The jam were known for the lyrics as well as the music ,in this song Weller states,it's the kidney machines that pay for rockets and guns, as true today as it was back then, more money for Ukraine or more money to the NHS.
I've heard of The Jam, but I don't think I've ever heard any of their music. Unless it was in a movie. I also love UK bands.
There's a British film called Billy Elliot that featured their song 'A Town Called Malice' prominently.
@@draven123100 I've heard about that movie, but I haven't watched it.
If you love UK bands try Ocean Colour Scene a song called Get Away by them is my favourite. ✌️
Try their song 'A Town Called Malice'.
Appreciate the honest reaction, not everyone likes every song, but could you fix the title - it's "GOING UNDERGROUND" not "GANG UNDERGROUND" . The Jam deserves that respect. Thank you
1980 in Britain people were angry so many songs were politically motivated. The Jam had nothing to with their names. This is post punk rock music simple as that.
The lead singer is Paul Weller now that's a rabbit hole.
Supposedly Paul's sister mentioned Jam one breakfast and he thought Hmmm that's a good name.
Tube station at midnight probably the best song by the jam
Funeral pyre is a great one. Incredible drumming on this one . Check it out
And Paul Weller ( Lead Singer ) still going strong today 👍 You guys should check him out
And also give English Rose by the jam a listen, much slower, but a very nice song
A band called Buffalo Tom did a really good lower tempo cover of this song if anyone's interested.
A TOWN CALLED MALICE . - I think I am sure you'll like !
Check out some of Paul Weller's solo stuff from the 90's, some classic tracks.
You should listen to Down in the tubestation at midnight…fantastic Jam song
Another English band you should give a try is the stone roses
Paul Weller, the 'Mod Father', went on to form The Style Council, check out Shout To The Top.
Do yourself a favour and check out Paul Wellers back catalogue. Style council, and Paul's Wildwood album. Are a good place to start.
I think maybe The Jam took over from The Who, had the same energy and anger that the youth felt at the time
Away at West Ham
I still get jelly and jam mixed up. I'm thinking mostly of grape flavor. I think jelly is the more jelled and hard to spread when making a PB sandwich and jam is the one that is easy to spread. But lately I haven't been able to find grape jam and I think it is now just called grape spread. Maybe other people were getting confused.
The Jam were a working class anti establishment group and part of the New Wave Sound which followed on from the punk era. Most of their sounds have a message to them. Try That’s Entertainment and A Town Called Malice by them. Another New Wave group was The Stranglers. Try London’s Calling and Golden Brown by them.
London Calling is a Clash song mate
This lead singer song writer Paul weller is a legend ... he can do it all... he can sing like Marvin Gaye ... try you do something to me by Paul weller or broken stones ... sounds completely different. He can do it all and is the most versatile musician ever in my opinion both Adele and Amy winehouse performed with him along with Paul McCartney The Who the stones etc etc
It's actually a angry song ,no party to see here.
Good you reviewed The Jam. They always need a few listens to get their songs as they are always packed with...as you put it ..'transitions '. Maybe one of the major reasons The Jam never really made an impact in the U.S. as, generally, the public there just 'couldn't get' The Jam...their music and the packed lyrics . But heh...keep listening to them. They were.. still are influence wise...a great band.
Guys, the Jam lead a generation of young people back in the late 70's and into the 80's. Late punk and early Mod revival ........ Paul Weller always said he'd be a MOD until he dies. You really need to research what the Jam were all about before you make a judgement on just one song. I don't understand why everyone is banging on about a Town Called Malice in the comments, they are so much more than that. Look on UA-cam for some documentaries about them, a generation defining group. I will be the first to admit that when they broke up and Paul went his own way with the Style Council I was devastated, it wan't my thing but that's what music is all about, personal choice.
"Going Underground" is good. "A Town Called Malice" and "Precious" are GREAT. And check out the lyrics when you get the chance: Paul Weller was one angry young man then.
Get the English version. And I would walk ten thousand miles for the English version
yes..interrupting the tune wont help..this song should make you wanna hit replay..listen to it again its a belter..p.s. hasnt either of you ever hea4d of a jamming session..jeeez🙄
These yanks are about 3 000 miles out ɓut they seemed to enjoy it .
Their, or Weller's lyrics take so much from the British society that they are bit hard to get especially since they are written 40 years ago.
Great reaction, but the title still says "Gang" instead of Going Underground
No it clearly says "going"....seriously!
Going, not Gang, Underground
This was number 1 in uk 1980 at the time usa had cold war with Russia and uk was worried about it
@@dlmdee yeah I know right😅
The whole of the West had the cold war, which lasted for 45 years.
Yeah did the jam save us dont know but god was this a great track no truer words spoken on this song
Nothing else sounds like this
Please read his lyrics. You’ll get it right away
"Jam stands for their initials"? You what?
One of the best band's ever! 🙄
Listen to the lyrics
Might be better to have the lyrics to hand, the Jam always had a message to tell, this one very political.
Paul Weller is a brilliant socio-political poet.
He's also a bit of a cock, but we'll gloss over that bit...
_The Jam_ got their name in a very mundane way. Paul at the breakfast table looking for a name. His sister Nicky: _"We've had Bread and Marmalade, why not The Jam?"_
How about the video?
Dont think it would go to well with usa remember it was banned on top of the pops for being anti american remember at the time America and Russia had the cold war and we were worried about it nuclear text books for atomic crimes it was trying to stop nuclear war it's the kidney machines that go for rockets and guns how relevant is that line still america was our ally and we didnt want them and russia to start ww3
👀???
Party song? It's a political Song against the establishment.
gang underground? wtf are u on mate??????
It is not a party song look at the lyrics please
It seems like The Jam are wasted on you.
Jam has pieces of fruit in it. And your woman is clueless about music and The Jam in particular. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS.
Just stick to your hip hop
