- When I first watched the pilot, I wasn't a big fan of Hazbin Hotel, but now...?

Hey everyone! The Hazbin Hotel video is finally here! Sorry it took a few extra days, I got caught up with editing, copyright and other projects, but I hope you enjoy! Everything in Hazbin Hotel takes place in the the Pride Ring and Helluva boss ventures out of the pride ring more in season 2
I also think that Pentious' death was very anticlimactic considering he was my favorite character
I have a theory on the favor and it would be to kill Alastor's contractor so he's free from his deal
Also Stayed gone or Loser, Baby is my favorite
Sir Pentious is my favorite character aswell

I’m starting to see Alastor as like another emperor Belos.
I think they did explain why they only attacked the hotel.
Adam said to Charlie in episode 6 “When the extermination happens, we’re hitting your hotel FIRST” because he really doesn’t like her due to everything she tried to do to talk with heaven.
It didn’t hit anywhere else because that was their first target, and they were driven back. Adam would also definitely bring his whole army just to prove a point
It’s also explicitly stated to be a bad idea in-story because attacking his daughter is a sure fire way to invite Lucifer’s wrath upon you… which is exactly what happens, albeit they needed to hold the line long enough for him to come in. I defend it because at least Adam is established to be a meatheaded jock who really wanted to spite the Morningstars and his lieutenant Lute (oh god, I just realised that’s the point of her name… he named Vaggie when she joined his ranks for goodness sake!) really relishes it; also Heaven as a whole apparently didn’t know so that’s likely why Sera couldn’t reign Adam in despite secretly sanctioning him.
Remember the checklist Adam made of the “required traits to get into Heaven?”
1. Don’t steal
2. Act selfless
3. Stick it to the man
Sir Pentious did all of those things in The Show Must Go On.
He made the weapons on his own instead of stealing them, he sacrificed his life to save the others of the hotel, and it stuck it to Adam by fighting against him to save his friends.
Helluva boss and Hazbin hotel take place in the same universe just in different places, hazbin focuses on Charlie basically saving hell, and helluva boss focuses on its characters and also introduces the 7 deadly sins, also the reason why the voice actors were replaced is because the creator of the show always wanted a broadway voice cast, so she got a opportunity to get a broadway cast she obviously went for it and replaced everyone, fun fact the original voice actors of the pilot came back to sing in a video called thank you and goodnight as like a final hazah, great vid btw!!!

There’s also, between this and “Helluva Boss”, an animal theme to the Seven Deadly Sins’ representatives who rule each ring; Lucifer’s is that of the swan, because he was the “ugly duckling” who didn’t fit in with his fellow Angels and was cast out… That, and a circus theme with Lu as a ringmaster. The others who were seen so far in HB all have different motifs.

Episode 4 is the hardest to watch but it’s written so amazingly. It’s my favorite episode of the first season even though it’s utterly heartbreaking to watch. No one deserves to be treated that way even if they work in the adult film industry. The hardest scene to get through is definitely the dressing room scene. Poison is my favorite song from the series so I try to just sing along and not focus on the visuals that happen during the music video although it’s definitely not easy. Props to the writers and actors for handling such a difficult topic in a realistic way. I watch true crime shows a lot and 80 to 85% involve SA in some ways. The fact a fictional show can tackle such a serious topic and get me crying every time I watch is heartbreaking but amazing. I really hope Val dies so Angel Dust can be free.
Alastors my favorite character partly because there are so many different interpretations of his character! Like sometimes he seems like the true villain like with his song and sometimes he seems like he actually cares about Charlie and the hotel like when he sent away Mimsy. And he does it all while having a smile it’s just so interesting we can never tell what he’s thinking. Not to mention his powers and design are so visually appealing like radio and demon powers pair so well together!

@@thatlocaltransmasc Those 2 are also from my favorite episode. It’s definitely not easy to watch but it’s written so masterfully and really handles the topic well. It makes me cry every time I watch the episode during the scene in Angel’s dressing room.

Charlie is absolutely adorable and I love her. The Radio Demon is one of my favorites. The music is fantastic and characters I wasn't expecting anything from or didn't know about (Velvette, Carmilla, Emily etc) have quickly become beloved

About the va’s… one of their singing voices actually came out and said what was going on and it really just was that Vivzie wanted Broadway actors and just had the opportunity to get them, so she did.
I'm glad you gave the series a try! Excellent critique and criticism, I always like hearing your point of view! I loved the Hazbin pilot and going into the series it took me the first 2-3 episodes to get into it, but I ended up loving the series! I was not expecting to love Lucifer as much as I did, such a great new character! I think Alastor will be the endgame villain of the series and I hope season 2 starts pivoting in that direction. My only complaint is I wish there were a few more episodes just to give the story time to breathe. Not saying we needed filler, but even just adding 2 more episodes to slow things down a bit. Maybe I'm just old and had a hard time keeping up with the frantic nature of the show! 😂 Overall, definitely worth the 5 year wait!
Its honestly so interesting to have seen this show go from indie animation to an actual show, now i could say a bunch of things about the show but really what i thought was that it wasn't a perfect show but it had so much love poured into it, and for me that's what really mattered :)

There's a lot of reasons why the voice cast ended up the way it did.
1. Viv had likely wanted a Broadway cast from the beginning. She's a big fan of musical theatre and the cast from the pilot likely knew and understood this. She had an old video from before the pilot with voice headcanons. Alastor was the only one who ended up voiced by the actor she chose from that video though.
2. Some actors she had in mind like Justin Roiland didn't make the cat due to controversy.
3. There was likely limitations with the actors guilds especially since this was in production during the strikes.
4. We also don't know the full scope of it but some of the pilot actors weren't up to snuff when it came to singing which is kind of necessary for a musical.
5. There's also the weird case of Brandon Rogers being cast as Katie Killjoy due to the character being a reference to one of his characters, Bryce Tankthrust.
6. There's just the natural selection process of the casting call.
I don't really like how people are framing Viv as some villain who just took the opportunity to maliciously axe the crew that supported her for recognizable names because it really isn't that at all.
Yes it is. She was wrong for axing the voice actors that promoted her show for years. You can like a show without defending the creator.

@@HaughtyToast it's completely normal to hire someone for only the pilot and that's it. It's not normal to encourage (or not discourage) the voice actors to spend 100s hours on a podcast doing voice requests. Voice requests that inspired fanart, animatics ,and kept the fandom alive. Vivziepop would drop in on the podcast and constantly telling the voice actors they are the best and are exactly the voices she imagines the characters. That is manipulative and user-type behavior. If the voice actors cause any trouble they will be labelled "hard to work with" and ruin their careers. How often have ever heard a voice actor complain about their bosses? None, right? Now why do you think that? Do you believe there are no shitty bosses in the entertainment industry. The ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY.
@@chrissiemudpuppy1179 That's just a consequence of Viv coming from the internet and learning where the lines are to be drawn. The first statement isn't even true. She had to tell the cast to stop doing voice requests and VR stuff because the fans were taking it way too seriously. It's also untrue that the voice actors kept the fandom alive. Maybe helped, but a lot of that was done by Helluva Boss, merch, convention panels, etc.
I also said nothing about entertainment industry employers at large, that's just you putting words in my mouth to try and make me look bad. It's dishonest. Don't do that.
@@HaughtyToast The podcast started even before the Helluva Boss aired and the airing of the pilot. It helped tremendously. We will know more about this shit in a few years. I remember how everyone thought the voice actors got recast because they weren't union. If you dared to say you thought Vivziepop just wanted new voice actors you were accused of just hating Vivziepop. She stayed quiet and let people think that. It will come out eventually. Probably when the show ends.
7:54 for the voice actors, it's possible that they would need to sign a type of contract with the actual company and/or studio that was backing the show, and they had their own personal reasons for not wanting to do so. With an indie project I'm pretty sure you get paid from the sponsors and directly from the creator through a small but usually reliable and friendly team. With companies, it's a bit trickier knowing how the financial side of things is going to work. At least, that's what I can hope was what happened, if Vivzie just replaced them that would kinda suck :/

Not recasting them makes complete sense, they cant sing, and the show needed people who could. If you remember the Addict music video Angels voice actor was very heavily autotuned and it was very noticeable.
@@gracedunlop5883 youre right of course. An indie studio doesnt have the time or budget for voice lessons either. I just hope the pilot VAs were chill with it (though they mightve known it was just a one time gig, not sure). I dont have a lot of information here so tbh i was just speculating from an industry’s standpoint something that would explain the whole thing 🤷♀️
Also, for the pilot, they had two voice actors for one character, one for the normal speaking role, and one for the singing. If they did keep the old voice actors that would mean that they would need to keep the ones who did their singing as well. That means you’ll be paying two voice actors to play one character instead of just one who can do the normal speaking and sing roles to play one character.

Alsoo a lot of the characters (at least charlie and alastor) had different vas for the singing vs. regular talking, and it makes sense that they would have preferred the same va, mostly for money reasons.

I never knew you were gonna touch on this series and it's cool you like it :D I'm fixed on the theory that the favor included in the deal Alastor made with Charlie has something to do with freeing him from whatever character (Lillith most likely) he sealed a deal with. If I remember correctly (tho I dont remember which episode), we see the pentagram layout of hell when a power outage occurs, and Hazbin Hotel is visible on a hill separate from the main pentagram
I enjoyed watching it for the most part, I like how they got a lot of big name actors to voice the main characters, including Sarah Stiles who voiced Mimzy in episode 5 and Spinel in Steven Universe
Oh my gosh, Hazbin Hotel was so fun to watch! Considering it’s created by Vivienne Medrano, the same creator as Helluva Boss, one of my favorite UA-cam shows at the moment, it was super fun to watch!
Also, if you haven’t already, you should also watch some of Tomotasauce’s Hazbin dubs as well! I watched the most recent one, and it was pretty funny!

Season 1 felt like it took place over 1 week when it was actually 6 months.
I think that when Alastor says “Great Alastor altruist died for his friends” he’s mocking the idea of him dieing for his friends, and he is reminding himself of what his goal really is, and that he literally almost died while trying to complete it. I think he doesn’t want to, but he was starting to get attached to the gang. I also think he’s a really cool character, I’m looking forward to seeing what he does next

I personally am a sucker for angels and demons so that was what i liked but otherwise it was mid for me (not in a bad way, the show isnt even finished so my opinion might change). Did enjoy the show and the ending so i will carry on watching it.

The pacing problem is, well, a problem but if you were wondering here’s the reason behind it.
When creating the storyboard, Viziepop states during (I believe a Q&A) the creation of the storyboard they were not greenlit for season 2 yet.
So Viziepop had only 8 episodes with roughly 22 minute time spans. So the pacing issue was out of her control as season 2 wasn’t greenlit yet and if she planned for a season 2 then the show would flop if season 2 didn’t turn out to be greenlit.
Also I wanna make a note how Adam, is voiced by Alex Brightman. Who also voiced Sir Pentious and a character from helluva boss.
I was also not a fan of the excessive swearing, but it helps to remind myself that they are in hell. I did not overall love the writing, but I think the songs completely carry the show. They’re amazing.
Finally, someone else who noticed Alastor making a deal. Also, i think he made a deal with God.

I agree in your point that the power scales aren't very clear, it isn't specified what each character's powers are, but there is a whole stablished hierarchy of power in Hell (that apply both to HH and HB) there's some videos out there that explain it very well
As for the VAs, from what I know they were replaced mostly because for a show that's a musical it was better to have VAs that could also sing instead of talking and singing voices like in the pilot. The pilot VAs themselves have expressed that they're ok with the decision and Al's VA still does some voices in Helluva Boss
You should give it a chance, the first season is more wild, per say, but it really becomes character driven later on and it also has some pretty good songs
I suspect you are going to get the focus on Charlie you want to see in the second season. She is being setup to begin her actual journey to find out who she really is. She has to overcome her avoidant behavior regarding her position and power. She does not have the life experience to bond with the sinners in the way she wants to. We see this played out in S1E4 Masquerade where she utterly fails Angeldust but it is Husk that breaks through and connects to him. It is because they share the damage in life. Charlie has lived far to shaltered a life and does not have the sort of damage others do. They cannot relate to her and her to them. She can have empathy for them. But to break through requires commonality.
But that doesn't mean she cannot do something for them. Husk could not and would not have been there for Angeldust if it were not for Charlie. Charlie provided the space and the expectation of hope to be better in which both of them could grow. And with both Heaven and Hell set against the denizens of Hell finding community she is going to have many antagonists railed against her. She is going to have to come to terms with her position and power in order to provide the sanctuary the people need. And that is going to be her journey.
It is interesting to take note of the conflict between the framework the story is set in with the actual focus and action the show takes. Set in a framework based on an interpretation of Christian black and white view on sin and punishment. Summarised by the song Hell is Forever. But what the show focuses on is not questions of sin but rather issues of mental health. It is the internal suffering that people experience that define who they are and the social systems that give rise to them. Mental health is where the conflict is within the story. And that is a much more grey place than the black and white of the framework. And this is reflected in that the Angels despite seemingly being in charge of things have no idea how or why people show up in Heaven or Hell. And they have put together their own criteria and enforce it often with a vicious approach. Heaven has as many problems as Hell. Which is shining a light on the problem of assuming that the morality line is a black and white thing. The central thesis seems to be that trying to force humans that are things that are the result of a totality of social, neurological, and psychological issues do not fit well within a black and white structure. And that there may need to be a revolution against such a system.
The Alastor × Lilith theory doesn't seem to be holding weight.
It's confirmed in the intro that Good & Evil, especially Evil existed before Lucifers fall and Before Hell.
Perhaps Alastor got his powers from the Root of All Evil, and was given 000000.1% of its power to be a terrifying Overlord, but at a hefty price.
It does explain the power level he has and his myriad of undefined abilities.
gotta love how there's an EXCLUSIVE chapter of the video dedicated to Alastor, he just steals the show

Okay, so to clear some things up, you asked what the pentagon is, or where it is, so as a fan of helluva boss... there are 7 rings for each sin, as well as a character for each sin. And yes, they take place in the same universe, but there are again 7 rings, which i forget which one its on, but lucifer may be on a different ring, maybe? And the Pentagon is basically just a compass or map in a way. They said cannibal town is in a corner of it. OH! THIS IS IMPORTANT! there are also 7 tiers in Hazbin and Helluva Boss. I'll go lowest to highest. The lowest is imps and hell hounds (the main characters in Helluva Boss are imps and a hell hound), then the hell born that aren't imps or hell hounds. After that are sinners, then you have the overlords. Dont forget the Ars Goetia, then seven deadly sins, Charlie and Lilith. And of course, on top is Lucifer. So yeah... that's all i have to say. Some things may not be %100 correct, but most of it is fact

I gotta agree as well, I watched and was just like, okay, it was enjoyable, but I don’t really care much. Now I just wanna see more!
So Mimzy. Mimzy was originally a character planned to be part of the series. And she had developed some fandom behind the scenes including Viv liking her. So she was used in the episode she showed up in for a very effective foil to the tension being baked between Lucifer and Alastor. It appears Viv wanted to ramp the tension up between Lucifer and Alastor rapidly showing it coming to blows eventually. But needed a way to cut it off without dissipating it. So she through the narcissist Mimzy at the end of the song completely stealing the focus. Lucifer asking who she was was an insert of the audience. A recognition that she came out of nowhere. That was the point of her. But she didn't just serve that function. She was still looped back in to represent Lucifer's loss of faith in humanity. It was her self serving nature that brought about the attack and brought out Alastor's sadism. But we also saw Alastor showing some growth as well in that he turned his back on an old friend who brought danger to his new growing associations. He is still trying to keep them at arms length but we see evidence that Charlie is growing on him as are the rest of the residences of the Hotel. And this was all brought about by Mimzy showing up in the way she did.
5:56 Alastor scenes go really insane, but honestly I felt... a little underwhelmed at times with everything else. The show does rly well with smooth small actions (for ex. angel doing a flip-thing off the pole after the "stab Angel" Nifty joke, and Adam's grin before Vaggie and Charlie are sent home from the heaven court, Rosie twirling her dress around during "we're super happy to have you folks aboard", etc.) but I feel like it struggles with more dynamic big movements that have "weight" behind them (Camilla and Vaggie training felt rly weightless for ex.) or moments that should have a big impact but don't to me. Like Charlie's transformation into demon form or Lucifer showing up to the final battle. the punch shot itself felt kinda empty and him catching her afterwards also felt very "default" view, if that makes sense.
6:50 it's the same phenomenon as sketches always being better than the line art haha- the clean-ness can sometimes result in a certain "stiff-ness" to the animation. I can't really explain it either, but I get it. I do slightly prefer the series' animation bc it feels less squishy and jiggly line-wise haha-
7:40 I believe during the official casting, at least with Michael Kovach, there were rumors that he was too young / not part of an union at the time, but the more likely reason is just that not all of them could reliably sing. Michael also said that singing in Angel Dust's voice was tough for him at the time iirc?
But the larger scale reason is probably just wanting to enhance the musical aspect of the show with more disney / broadway singers.
11:22 another funny thing about Alastor hijacking songs is that... he hasn't had a song that _wasn't_ hijacking someone else's song and his song in the pilot was just ripping off Charlie's.
It's really interesting for a character who is clearly shown to hate not being the most powerful person in the room / in control, to not even get a song that is not about taking songs from others.
It's also funny haha-
15:10 Hazbin def suffers from its break-neck pace but imo Mimzy was a good catalyst for everything that the episode did.
She was there to loredrop Alastor, give a different perspective to him, cause a conflict between Husk and Alastor (also revealing Husk seemingly actually cares for Alastor, trying to warn him about trouble? which is wild) and bring something bad to the hotel that Alastor could fight to further the conflict between Charlie and Lucifer (who just let it happen a la "told you!").
Now granted the different perspective on Alastor could have been covered by his friendship with Rosie too, but i'm not sure how the trouble part could have been covered. Maybe Cherri?
Angel is of course always prone to getting people riled up about him, but we just had him beg Val to not hurt Charlie and his "I can defend myself" stick with Husk last episode, so him bringing trouble to the hotel just seems very out of character at that point in the story.
19:00 I think something that rly suffers with the time skipping is the development because we kind of have to rely on telling instead of showing. Like uh, in ep5 Vaggie and Charlie say to Lucifer that they still haven't found all of Angel's drug stashes but then in ep6 Husk talks about all of Angel's progress and not wanting to reset it. Which... seems odd, like which one of these is true? did just enough time pass between that?
Another example is Alastor, who Charlie defends so much in ep5 but in ep7 she tells him off about he "always just stands there smiling".
It's not that these instances can't be explained or can't be intentional, but with all the timeskips and quick pacing it's sometimes hard to tell what development has been taking place and relying on "telling" makes it harder because that can also just be people's subjective feelings or opinions on the matter.
19:30 yeah the layout of hell and generally the worldbuilding relies a lot on getting REALLY into it. Like the show itself touches a bit on sinners vs. hellborn creatures (Lute implies it in ep1), but it's not that read-able to casual audiences I think.
It's kind of cool to not spoon-feed viewers everything but it can also come across as vague and that definitely sucks.
An example is Velvette saying "my show can't wait for this unlucky [censored] to pull herself back together" in ep2 a joke or world building?
If you think about it, you'd think more people in hell would die considering how much violence happens, so why the exterminations --> angelic weapons are used to kill. It then stands to assume that Sinners are, like Angels, immortal unless killed with an angelic weapon. So then do people actually pull themselves back together? does it only work with their original limbs?
(interesting note on that point: Vaggie got another pair of wings, which were merely torn off by Lute, while her eye was removed with an angelic weapon - is this intentional or did her wings come back for a different reason? If yes, does that mean that Lute's arm will grow back as well? does that mean Vaggie will forever have a hole in her hand since it was inflicted with an angelic weapon?)
Like this is kind of INSANE worldbuilding, but idk if I'd picked up on any of it without the meta infos (that I won't spoil of course, just in case).

24:10 A big critic that I have with Vaggie is actually "out for love". banger song but absolutely misplaced. Sure, Vaggie seemed a bit easy to anger (but even that has toned down in the series compared to the pilot) but I never felt that she wanted revenge. Camilla says so, but I have no reason to believe that. She wasn't looking for a fight with Adam and Lute in heaven, she just wanted to be left alone. She even tried to lie to Charlie so she wouldn't have to go. If she jumped at the opportunity to go and tried to make trouble, then sure, but she didn't....
Charlie and her are alr together and she does so much to support her. Hell, even her part in "whatever it takes" is about protection. Idk how the show expects me to believe that Vaggie needed a lesson about fighting for love so much that learning it even grew her wings back somehow? Esp after sharing a song about protecting the ones you love with her supposed teacher irt?
If she wanted revenge for them revealing her secret then that was completely underdeveloped imo.
LIKE on paper I think it's fair to want revenge for getting your eye stabbed and wings torn but Vaggie just.... wasn't doing that.

ON THAT NOTE - last but not least irt Helluva Boss: it is the same universe, but there's been no overlap so far, aside from implicit worldbuilding. I also didn't like the pilot actually but the show takes a bit of a turn tone-wise over the course of s1! While I do still think you'd enjoy it less than Hazbin, if you do want to give it a shot, rest assured that the show has more to offer than what the pilot and ep1 promises. ep2 is a good example imo of what you can except from Helluva long-term.
the production is also insane for being free on youtube. Some moments outclass Hazbin animation imo.
In other comparisons, I think Hazbin is overall better and is more plot-driven BUT suffers from more minor inconsistencies and a break-neck pace.
While Helluva has imo the more compelling ship (if you care about that) but suffers from baaad emotional whiplash/tone problems, esp through early s2. Also the humor tends to be more extreme, which likely can be attributed to Brandon Rogers (MC's voice actor and partial co-writer) who is..... unhinged. let's say that.
I didn't know that Lucifer and Varian share the same voice! I always loved "Ready As I'll Ever Be" and I after a relisten I can kinda see it. Might have to check out Helluva so that I can understand the world a bit better as well.

The reason the Exterminators only went to the hotel was because Adam and Lute specifically wanted to attack there first, due to Charlie and Vaggie p*ssing them off during their visit to Heaven. They would've gone after the rest of hell after the hotel was taken care of, but just never got the chance to. Thats also probably why there were so few Exterminators at the time. They wouldn't need a huge army just to go for this one building. The rest probably would've come out after they were done there.

The pilot voice cast was replaced because the show’s creator is a massive broadway fan. She wanted to treat the series as if it was a true broadway musical by hiring real broadway actors to voice the characters instead.

Honestly thought it was a good start i really enjoyed it. Feels similar to helluva boss’s first season (the spinoff that has more episodes than the main show) it kept my interest and had some pretty soild jokes.
Hazbin Hotel to me is a show where it really feels like a new era for adult animation. Like, it stood out from the crowd of being something different and not just poorly made Family Guy or South Park clone in terms of storylines and animation. Watching the show really was a great time to say the least, despite having glaring flaws that are welcomed to be discussed. It's fine to still enjoy the show when it is somewhat or extremely flawed and Hazbin Hotel is one of those examples of a good, but flawed show. There isn't any particular episode that I really dislike or just indifferent towards. They all have a lot of elements that make the experiences enjoyable and how their aren't any moments that flat out ruin the experience for me.
Now, my biggest flaw with the show is honestly the pacing. The pacing, especially for 8 episodes made the storyline go way too fast. Like the plot points within certain episodes just get resolved very quickly or we don't get much time to explore the world or some of the characters.
In episode 3, the reveal of the dead angel came out of nowhere and the reveal on the character who did it just didn't land for me. I bet the mystery could've been revealed to be one of the main characters who did it, or leave the big mystery ambiguous if the story really wants to showcase that Carmilla Carmine killed the angel. I think the reveal should've been saved until episode 7 when they actually show us that she did kill the angel in the previous extermination. Episode 3 will leave the mystery more ambiguous on who did it, so we could spend a little bit more time with Carmilla Carmine and let Episode 7 showcase that she killed the angel exterminator.
Now, other flaws I have are just nitpicks or just personal subjective preferences. Like, Adam's dialogue can get very annoying in terms of how many swears he could spit out whenever he speaks. I just wished they toned it down a little bit. Now, this nitpick is not the show's fault, but more of an Amazon Prime problem. I really wished Prime would've put a content warning at the beginning of Episode 4: "Masquerade" for having very adult/sensitive themes and scenes. The responses would've been so much better if the content warning was there when the first 4 episodes came out on the 19th of January and not just a week later when they were trying to fix the mistake. Finally, I feel like the show introduced too many characters all throughout thr course of the 8 episodes. I like quite a number of them as they were like Cherri Bomb, Sera, Emily, Rosie, and Zestial. But, I wish to see more of them in the future. Others like Mimzy could've been removed and/or saved for a future season because she added nothing to the story.
But other than those flaws I had with the show, I really enjoyed a lot of elements within Hazbin Hotel. The characters were all super fun to watch and to learn about throughout the course of the season. Like, most of them feel like characters that I want to give a crap about and how they play off of each other very nicely whenever they are good, anti-heroes, supportive, or are just flat out evil. The animation is absolutely gorgeous to look at from the character designs, character movements, the pretty backgrounds, having so much more colors to go off of, and the effects and sound effects are all great to look and hear. The songs (except for one) are all very catchy and memorable in my opinion. Not every song is a winner, but I enjoyed listening to them on their own or just listening to them while watching the visuals. Loser, Baby and the Finale song are my top favorites from the show.
Overall, Hazbin Hotel Season 1 was a very wild, but very enjoyable ride in my opinion. I understand that isn't a masterpiece due to the very fast pacing that can be a turn off for some people, but I really had a great time watching the show and I hope to see more of Hazbin Hotel in the future when the second season comes out to who knows when.

The one of the reasons Alastor is so strong is because for a sinner to gain game power in hell, they will need to collect a huge amount of souls from making soul deals with other sinners or demons, and the more they have the more power they can gain. That’s one of the reasons why Alastor is so strong but another reason could be that he has power not directly tied to hell that’s why you see him do things that other sinners can’t do and be by the voodoo that he does.
The difference between Vivziepop's work in indie mode vs A24 mode is having to conform to a structure. Indie allows her to dwell in the moment. Focus on the feel of every moment. The schedule is based on her artistic take rather than on a budget sheet and a bottom line. And they had to engage an outside studio for much of the cleanup and fill. Where as in Indie mode they can dote over these parts. And the outside studio was engaged based on bidding likely. And they engaged a group that could manage the flow but did not match up to the quality that could be maximized in an Indie flow.
In anime there is a term called Sakuga. This is where they switch up the animation style by bringing in a heavy hitter to do fine detail for a scene. I get the impression that the Indie mode is in a permanent Sakuga mode with forays into outright experimental that can go into astounding. They did not have this room to play under the budget put on them by A24. Hopefully the success of the 1st season will inspire A24 to open the purse strings a bit and give them more budget. I would love to see the show slow down and allow for more exploration of the characters rather than having to speed run the plot in order to fit it all in within the budget they had.

In regaurds to Adam and him dying, Viv said that it was really fun to write for Adam and his VA enjoys okaying him quite alot and with Pentious going to Heaven itncould mean that Adam could decend to Hell because he is awful and that could be a fun way to keep him in the show. Along with many routes to use him, he could try to fet back into Heaven and redeem hinself, he could go even more bad and move up becoming an Overlord, etc.

To put in to words how you feel about the power system, what you prefer is systems on the hard magic side of the spectrum, like Avatar and HxH, Hazbin is all the way on the soft magic side where the important thing isn't the exact rules of magic, all we need to know is that Gandalf is a powerful wizard that can do crazy magic stuff. It's always difficult to enjoy a story that has the opposite of what you prefer so good on you for enjoying it regardless.
@8:00 they recasted it bc they had each character playing like 2 to 3 different people in the pilot, 1 for singing and 1 for talking. Not to mention other reasons with certain actors but yeah that's the biggest reason. The company couldn't (or didn't want to) afford multiple people per character.

Lilith owning a soul feels so out of character since that is basically why she fled the garden in the first place.
I actually like how Hazbin uses profanity, the characters swearing the most are the citizens of hell (which makes sense considering they were bad enough to end up there in the first place) and Adam, hammering home the point that souls in heaven can be just as bad as those in hell. And I really like how the usual lack of swearing by people like Alastor makes the few times they resort to it inform you about their current mental state. The swearing is used with purpose.

And also. I don't know if the writers knew (at the time of writing season 1) that they were getting season 2. So they probably had to sacrifice some of the general world-building and characterization to be able to grab people's attention faster with more plot-heavy narrative.

The core of their relationship is really strong and both of them are mature enough people to not dwell on this kind of thing for too long. A single lie won't erase all the trust that was built up throughout their entire relationship. Charlie's "I brought you a souvenir" line basically meant "You made a mistake, but I forgive you. Let's move forward." I think that was a good enough resolution to their conflict
I'm not saying the conflict was bad or anything, I just wish we had more time to see them talk it out since they don't really exchange much dialogue about it. Just my opinion
So here is my working theory. Lets start with Lilith. Charlie's memories of Lilith are of her being the compassionate parent. The caring one that was emotionally there for her. She loved hearing about her father's dreams but they would eventually wear him down and Lilith would limit her time with him because of that. His depression was bad enough. Dwelling on the past made it worse. Lilith was struggling to bring Hell together as a community. Getting the denizens to have compassion for each other to make Hell a better place. But she was being thwarted by some of the more predatory Overlords and Heaven. The Overlords being a constant threat unlike Heaven being an annual one was her more immediate problem. The predatory Overlords did not want a unified Hell because it would affect their profits. People alone and suffering were easier prey.
Lilith is very powerful. But her power seems to be more about persuasion through music. Not the best weapon to deal with entrenched powerful Overlords who have people's souls under contract. So she needed a weapon. She watched the incoming souls and picked out the worst of the bunch. A psychopath serial killer named Alastor. She struck a deal with Alastor to give him power beyond his reach. She would have his soul, he would act as her agent in Hell. He would strike down those who acted against civility and compassion. Focusing on the Overlords. He killed off the more predatory Overlords. We know he didn't kill all of them as we meet Zestial and Carmilla. Both of whom show signs of empathy and community. Carmilla even features a song about Love being the source of her power. They clearly have issues with Alastor but a truce is being enforced. Alastor because he is constrained from acting against compassionate Overlords.
All this shift in power will have been noticed by Heaven. They will see Lilith behind the scenes. They had been worried about her organizing the demons. But now she not only has her voice to change things but she has a powerful demon at her beck and call. Alastor prevents them taking any action directly against her. But then into the void created by Alastor's romp through the Overlords arises a group of demons calling themselves the Vees. They quickly rise in power much like Alastor did. Being sinners who rose to power as fast as Alastor did suggests someone is behind them. More on that later. Suffice to say that they quickly become a threat to Alastor and Lilith's schemes. So Alastor confronts them but Vox manages to force Alastor to retreat. It was probably a close battle. But Vox prevailed and Alastor went into hiding to heal and try to find a way to break his contract or get more power.
With Alastor out of the picture Heaven saw its chance to get to Lilith. So they sent Adam to threaten her. And Adam told her without her pawn Alastor her family was now a target of the exterminators. Specifically Charlie was a target. Being cornered Lilith struck a deal with Adam saying she would join him in heaven if he promised not to kill any of the Hellborn. Adam's ego would not be able to resist this deal so Lilith vanishes from Hell and is Adam's pet up in Heaven for the past seven years.
So when Charlie calls her mother in the pilot and leaves a message lamenting how things are going Lilith pulls Alastor out of whatever hole he had crawled into and sends him to protect her. Alastor of course bristles at the idea of performing altruistic actions. But he is under contract and cannot say no. So he immediately shows up at her door. Despite being under contract he still sees opportunity to revel in the suffering of people in the Hotel so he plays along soaking up all the failure he can.
After the fight for the Hotel with Adam presumably dead (we don't actually see him die as the last we see is him smiling at Lute) Lute retreats back to Heaven and informs Lilith that the deal is over as Adam is dead. And she tells her to go back to Hell and get her brat under control otherwise the threat to kill her stands. The more militant Angels now see Charlie as a threat and with Adam's deal not to kill the Hellborn off the table it is open warfare.
Lilith will initially return to Hell and try to talk Charlie out of her goals. But eventually her conviction and the fact that she is fighting for what Lilith was fighting for will cause he to seek to throw off Heaven's hold on her and she will join Charlie's side. This will be the arc of the second season. Alastor will be trying to break his contract and Heaven will be struggling between the question of what to do about Sir Pentious and the militant Angels that want war with Hell. All while the Vees and their shadow master continue to pressure the denizens of Hell.
The third season will see the rise of that shadow master coming out of the shadows and revealed to be Eve. Eve has been in Hell all this time. As she died in sin due to the Original Sin of eating the apple she would have been doomed to Hell no matter how good she behaved. Having knowledge of Good and Evil she may well have tried to stay good. But the Original Sin still doomed her. In the lore dump at the start of Ep 1 we never hear about Adam eating the Apple. In this setting it may have just been Eve that ate the apple. Thus Adam gained entry to Heaven as the first human to do so. Despite being a horrible sociopath due to not having knowledge of Good and Evil. Which is why when he says he has never done anything wrong he is being as honest as he can be because he has no idea what is right or wrong. Thus Eve is livid that she had to live her life with Dick Master and he went to Heaven and she went to Hell. She is pissed at Heaven for this. She is pissed at Lucifer for screwing things up. She is pissed at everything. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Alastor will have found a way to break his contract by the third season. Thus the power struggle will be Charlie and Emily fighting to change things in their respective domains. Alastor and Eve come out swinging at everything but for their own reasons. It depends on whether Alastor loses his power when he breaks the contract as to what he does with Eve. If he is still powerful he would not knuckle under her. But if he needs her for power he may side with her. In the end it will be a three way fight between Alastor, Eve, and Charlie. Charlie has to get over her problems with her own power. But once she does she may even be more powerful than Lucifer. But in the end she will have something that neither Eve or Alastor has and that will be friends.
I’ve watched a few minutes in already, and I think I get your point.
I just, I don’t think this show should be watched by people who don’t like vulgarity, or much less if you’re not an adult yet. Or even can’t tolerate it. That’s it’s own huge discussion topic on the issue with attracting a wrong crowd pertaining to certain media or content. But as of right now, this show is near-flawless. A solid 9.6 out of 10 I would give it. -0.2 for the transition between the pilot’s presentation and -0.2 for nitpicking and miscellaneous.
A lot of intertextual layers, writing, and character depth can be learned JUST from the animation alone-every part of it oozes charm and tells a story with vivid personality, flair, and composition. I think fanfare can be easily observed and grouped as: haters, those that lack media literacy, and all the rest. I’m personally fascinated by this hell and know Vivzie & co has worked hard to bring the vision forward.
