- Highlights of the original and previously unaired pilot for Leave it to Beaver, called "It's a Small World" and featuring different actors in roles of Ward and Wally, and Harry Shearer as an Eddie Haskell-type smart-aleck, and Richard Deacon (Mr. Rutherford) and Diane Brewster (Miss Canfield) as different characters, was teased on Entertainment Tonight and then shown for the first time as the first episode of the 1987 season of The New Leave it to Beaver on TBS Superstation October 4th, with an introduction by Jerry Mathers, Tony Dow, Barbara Billinglsey, and Kipp Marcus (Beaver, Wally, June, and Kipp Cleaver).
Changing Ward and Wally were very wise executive decisions.
And adding Eddie Haskell was brilliant casting.
June aged very well over the years
Barbara Billingsley actually owned a very fine steak restaurant, called "Billingsley's". One of the best steaks that Ihave ever had, was near the Van Nuys Airport.
HUGH BEAUMONT was the right choice. Stern , practical and loving. Good chemistry with Barbara, Tony and Jerry
Absolutely agree. Casey Adams? Just the smoke coming out of his nostrils was one sign he was not the choice.
@@pappysprite:
Agreed, that Beaumont was the better choice, but to be fair Adams's smoking would've been the director´s decision not Adams.
I agree!
casey adams, aka Max Showalter, played tuesday weld's dad in the classic '66 film "lord love a duck." the scene where he watches weld try on a bunch of different cashmere sweaters is hilarious! (the whole movie is just great. one of my favorites.) he has one of those great laughs that make you laugh. he has about 1000 movie and tv credits.
little known fact: they were going rename "its a small world" to - "look, its gopher boy!" but the producer owned a beaver farm (otherwise known as a "cat-house.") in upstate wisconsin so they renamed it "leave it to beaver" for the free advertising. and the rest is beaver history.
@@cjmacq-vg8um Stupid.
Tony Dow was the best choice by a landslide. Glad he made it.
Thank goodness they chose Hugh and Tony
Yes
Also, I am going to add. Tony Dow was the right choice to play Wally. R.I.P Tony.
Dow and Mathers had far better chemistry.
And Hugh Beaumont was the best choice to play Ward.
Ward SMOKING!!! SO happy they made the cast changes!! Hugh Beaumont was born to play Ward Cleaver... which was amazing since he started out in movies as the "heavy."
I think not sure Ward smoked a pipe
@@juliasewillfarmer6073 He may have had a pipe rack on his desk but I don't recall ever seeing him smoke one
Really? I understand Beaumont was a Methodist minister and was in a least one Christian film with Mathers pre-Cleaver.
Pre-Beaver, Hugh Beaumont played private eye Mike Shayne in several B-movies.
I saw a picture of Hugh smoking a cigarette on the set of leave it to beaver. So I think he did smoke.
The Leave it to Beaver show would never have been as successful w/o Tony Dow. While Jerry was adorable, Tony was the dreamboat that made all us little girls swoon!
@@steveniavarone3683 Whoa, easy now. That's an unnecessarily harsh comment to the lady. She's entitled to her opinion. I'm sure she's not alone in her views on Tony Dow. I'd question the appropriateness of your comment with a comment of my own but it's not PC on YT. It addresses a weird group who come with a multi-colored flag, special month and a movement of falsely aware folks that starts with an uppercase 'w'!
mathers didn't age well into later seasons. he was goofy as hell. we used to get stoned and watch the reruns just to make fun of him. remember the episode where he danced? that was one of the goofiest things ever caught on film.

@@steveniavarone3683 How dare you judge what type of boy is attractive to a seven year old girl?? I will say it again, he was a dream boat in my youthful eyes. His eyes were absolutely gorgeous 😍. All my then friends loved Tony DOW. I will miss him. I am so sorry that he passed. P.S. I do not smoke!!! I especially didn't smoke in 1958.
His talented acting helped too. Wally was just as much a star of the show as Jerry
@@cjmacq-vg8um Tony Dow was a much better actor too.
I am glad they recanted Ward and Wally. And came up with Eddie Haskell!
0:56 To think that the infamous Eddie Haskell type character could've been played by the Legendary Derek Smalls, is completely mind-blowing to me!!
Yes, and he was replaced by a guy who was rumoured to really be Alice Cooper. Heavy Metal rules in Mayfield. Gotta watch these small towns.
@@farrellmcnulty909 LMAO!! 😂😂 The seedy, dark underbelly of the small towns of the TV world. I'm waiting for that one brave journalist to peel back the layers of counterfeit wholesomeness. To reveal the facade perpetrated by the likes of Andy Griffith, Aunt B, and all the other family shows back then.
Thank Goodness they replaced the guy portraying Ward. Hugh Beaumont was a much classier choice. That other guy was very irritating and unlikable! Eddie Haskell and Wally switch was a better fit. If the changes weren't made I don't think the show would have lasted. I still love watching the re runs. Nice wholesome TV : ). This world definitely need more of it.
Yeah, the scene they showed had the father character blowing smoke in his wife's and their guest's faces. Ummm, Ward would never be that unclassy.
That Harry Shearer kid he looks like he’s going to have a career in voiceover work
And end up too short to give Beaver the business.
And become the bassist in the loudest band in rock and roll, Spinal Tap.
That, plus a couple of stints on Saturday Night Live.
Hugh Beaumont was 100% the right choice, and the character Eddie Haskell was perfect.
Ya I was watching that episode of the bottlecaps and I was like, " that's not Wally! That's not Ward!" Lol now it all makes sense. Thanks for sharing
I love how fate makes things right 99% of the time.
Well it wasn’t exactly the same vibe as the original. Wally calling Beaver stupid. No no no
Glad that Wall grew too tall to stay in the part
From what can figure out is only about 5ft 10ins to 6ft tall as an adult so he couldn’t grown all that tall.
I think that Shearer guy has a future in a fictional British rock band where they all turn their volumes up to 11!
Fictional? I don’t know, I think the fact that they were all musicians as well as actors and they wrote and performed the songs and did live concerts makes them pretty real. They played better live than many “real” bands.
@bretcobearo373😂😂😂 YES!! 🇬🇧🤘🇬🇧 I was Specifically looking for comments about "SPINAL TAP" I'm shocked that whoever made this ONLY said that Harry Shearer was on SNL, & NOTHING about S.T.!? Max Showalter may not have made it as Ward Cleaver yet he nevertheless had a long and successful acting career and he killed it as Grandpa Fred in John Hughes' seminal Sixteen Candles in 1984. "He's three sheets to the wind. Bwa-ha-ha-ha! He's drunk as a skunk. Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!"

So Leave It To Beaver debuted on the same day that the Soviets launched Sputnik I -- Monday, October 4. 1957. Another interesting fact is The Three Stooges, which had been sold into syndication by Columbia, was first show on Television two days earlier... Saturday, October 2.
The U.S had to counter Sputnik , the answer was this show so no one cared about space race .
That first Dad was in the movie Niagara with Marilyn Monroe!! Something to tell the grandkids!!
Just caught a glimpse of Paul Sullivan on The Donna Reed Show. He was tall and looked more like Hugh Beaumont than Tony Dow did. HOWEVER, I prefer Tony Dow. He was very handsome and had an unassuming quality about him that you don't see in a lot of actors.
Leave it to Beaver my favorite TV show I was 5 years old 1957 June's my favor she's a good actress
The original Ward smoked like a freight train. 😄 That actor was good in other roles through the years though. My wife and I saw Harry Shearer at a jazz club in New Orleans several years ago. I got Jerry Mathers’ autograph at a convention at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills when I was a kid. He was about 19 at the time and very shy and self conscious. But still quite popular!
Thanks for sharing with us. 0:24
"Casey Adams" was a rarely-used stage name for Max Showalter, whom (under his real name) you've seen in everything.
I just started watching the show this year & had no idea about this pilot. Very intetesting. Thanks for the upload.
IN REAL LIFE "GILBERT" (Beavers friend) WAS HARRY SHEARER'S SON!
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE THE KID WHO PLAYED, "CHESTER?" HE WAS GOOD 👍 DID HE CONTINUE WITH AN ACTING CAREER?
@@georgie2315 Buddy Joe Hooker is his real name. He has a facebook. He became a stuntman after Leave it to Beaver
Wow. The smoking in the house in front of the kids. On TV! Times have changed!!!
My mom chain smoked with me sitting on her lap.
Yes, for the worse.
That was common in the 1950s. My father smoked until 1968. He lived to age 98, by the way.
Smoking was commonplace back then, it wasnt yet considered taboo like it is now.
Casting is a gift....Norman Lear had the gift as did William Asher....
I’m so glad they got Hugh and tony after this. If these actors had stayed on I wouldn’t have liked the show or watched it. I have the complete series and it’s one of my favorites. And I’ve only watch this pilot once. Barbara and jerry were the only ones in the pilot I liked and they are the only ones who stayed in the series thankfully.
I agree, and also remaining in the series from this pilot was the actor who played the bike company business man (Richard Deacon, who became Mr. Rutherford), and his secretary (Diane Brewster, who played Beaver's first teacher, Miss Canfield)
This pilot also featured Joe Kearns, who would 2 years later play George Wilson in DENNIS THE MENACE.
He died young at age 54 ( I’m pretty sure )
@@robertsr.249 I think he'd just turned 55 recently when he died. I'll be 55 myself next month, so I'm almost as old as he was.
Joseph kearns also did appear as a bank officer in a few early episodes of gunsmoke
Kearns was a prolific radio actor.

Cam Williams ! Right & Beaver is as cute now too!

Rest In Peace, Barbara Billingsley(June)
Rest In Peace, Tony Dow(Wally) 1945-2022
Nice, as well as Richard Deacon (Mr. Rutherford) and Diane Brewster (Miss Canfield)
Fred Rutherford... Renaissance man
I see that beautiful Diane Brewster who played his 2nd grade teacher Miss Canfield later on the show appears in the pilot episode, and can be seen at 3:11. Beaver Cleaver purportedly had a crush on her, and to tell you the truth so did I, but not when I was in second grade; that was later, much, much later.
Yep, same actress for Miss Canfield and Mr. Rutherford in different roles in the pilot
I'm surprised to learn that she only appeared in four episodes as Miss Canfield before she quit the series. I thought that it was a lot more than that, like around twenty. Her replacement Miss Landers was quite a cutie as well, although I myself preferred the former.
@@8176morgan Yes, Diane Brewster only in five of the 39 episodes of first season - but did you know she also did five episodes of Still/The New Leave it to Beaver in 1980s?
Before and during the original LitB series, Brewster had a busy career in movies and TV shows, as did Sue Randall (Miss Landers); but yes, Randall did do 29 episodes of LitB but that was over five seasons, which is 5-6 per season - about same as Brewster
Yes, I did know that Diane Brewster made a few appearances in the New Leave It To Beaver series in the 1980's, but not poor Sue Randall as she died young from lung cancer being a heavy smoker for man years. How sad. I remember seeing her a few years ago in an episode of Perry Mason and thought that she looked so pretty.
Yes, Sue was no different than millions of others in those years who was a smoker and died of cancer but in her 20s she was in dozens of TV shows and movies I have posted here.
Hugh Beaumont, Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell) and others were also smokers
Let's all pile on Max Showalter, a tv and movie icon, just because he wasn't Hugh Beaumont and the directors told him to smoke. "Play Moonglow"
And "Stardust"
Canine cologne
INTERESTING, THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD!!!
never new this thanks for sharing this video
Max Showalter sure was smoking a lot.
Harry Shearer worked on the Jack Benny show on radio. He was one of the Beaver patrol. A club with Benny as the treasurer.

Grandpa Fred from Sixteen Candles!
June Cleaver was smokin hot, I dont care what anybody says. She used to hang out with Old blue eyes and the rat pack.
That’s why Ward was hard on the beaver.
I sure don’t like the guy playing Ward Cleaver with that cigarette stuck in his face.
Well, maybe that was part of the reason they recast that role to be played by Hugh Beaumont, which I think we all believe was a great decision.
@@shettrick I agree. That scene brought back bad memories of my home full of tobacco smoke.
@Cory Allen what an idiotic reply.
@Cory Allen you did a good troll impersonation.

Damn even Father Knows Best didn't smoke thank god for better casting and Hugh Beaumont, the first husband seem like a frickin police inspector something like Law and Order.
But Mr Beaumont smoked off screen. Its what killed him.
"Father Knows Best didn't smoke." You probably shouldn't watch this, then. ua-cam.com/video/O64pR4IfYB0/v-deo.html
Wrong. Robert Young smoked a pipe on Father Knows Best, as did Hugh Beaumont on Beaver. Andy Griffith smoked cigarettes on his show the first couple of seasons. How about Lucas McCain and his cigars? Jeesh
I don't care what you say. Max Showalter was a prince of a guy. Sure, he was no Hugh Beaumont, but he had his own thing going on. Like co-starring with Marilyn Monroe in Niagara. But, nooo, he's not fit to shine Hugh Beaumont's wingtips!
There was more than one. I remember watching 6 or 8 of these.
Harry Shearer from NPR's Le Show? Wow.
A member of Spinal Tap. I never would've guessed that. 🎸🎶🥚🐣
The Ward looked more like he would be Gilbert's father. Bulging eyes and manic just like the kid who played Gilbert. Wasn't he one of the people that Billy Mumy sent to the Cornfield in THE TWILIGHT ZONE? Hugh Beaumont and Barbara B. were great as Mom and Dad.
I can see it now. LOL! They should have had him guest star as Gilbert's dad, who we never saw but often heard about. I enjoyed it whenever Gilbert told stories about his father. They were funny, and the young actor's delivery was perfect.
Barbara Blllingsley was around 42 when she started on the show. Ward was even older.
Wally should have gave Harry Shearer the business...
SEYMOUR!!
Harry was really cocky/mouthy, he can't talk to Wally like that!!!!!!!!
"should have gave"
that pilot seems a lil mean spirited. Glad they got Hugh , Ken and Tony on board! and a cigarette puffing Ward,, yikes!
Yeah, that smoking Ward was shocking.
Alot of stars smoked on tv in earlier years.😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖
Man, that pilot was terrrrrribbble. So glad they got Hugh and Tony and changed up the characters to wholesome examples.
you ever see the "dick van dyke show" pilot? it was called "head of the family" and starred carl reiner as the dad. it had several different actors in famiiar roles. and it was pretty bad too. but once they changed the casting the show became, i believe, one of the best sitcoms ever produced. odd how casting can be so important in the success of film and tv shows.

I think Beaumont was born for the role.

Part one of the interview is available on my UA-cam channel: ua-cam.com/video/Bk4oxUn6znA/v-deo.html with part two coming soon!
Max Showalter as Casey Adams as Ward Cleaver.
Fact: Harry Shearer who played Frankie in the pilot on the LITB pilot also voiced Ned and other characters on The Simpsons
Fact: also more notably and recognizable in dozens of TV shows as himself and hugely popular movies from This is Spinal Tap to The Right Stuff and many others
Had no clue Harry Shearer was in the LITB pilot. I only knew him from 'This is Spinal Tap'.
The only thing I remember was her talking job on her airplane
In a film vault in Illinois. Imagine what else is out there yet to turn up.
I like Tony Dow but the original Wally seemed like a good fit. The father on the other hand was definitely not Ward Cleaver. Frankie was good. I'm surprised they didn't look him up when casting for.Eddie Haskell. Maybe the biggest difference between Frankie and Eddie was on the inside Eddie was really a good guy and that came through on the show. Frankie seemed more like a trouble maker.
Thanks for the analysis.
In your opinion, what made Ken Osmond's portrayal of Eddie Haskell so great? Was it Osmond's acting, better writing than that of the pilot, or was it better direction?
Tony was so handsome. Later he was in the teen soap opera Never Too Young. Dack Rambo also acted in the soap.
Is the whole show anywhere?
Baxter had no choice but to get that bicycle back. It was ordered by the one who played Mr Wilson.
A little exposure for Rob Weller, long-time host of "Entertainment Tonight" and "Entertainment This Week" at the beginning of the clip.
I was at a college football game where Weller returned as an alumni yell leader and one of his bits was responsible for popularizing the "The Wave" in the early 80's.
Happy you posted this. I could not come up with a name. I wonder what he is doing now. Was the female commentator Leeza Gibbons? It sounded like that was the name, but it was a bit muffled .
The Pilot Wally and the pilot Ward were best left behind. I like Harry but he is best as a Simpson’s voice actor.
I know it seems strange to see these other actors, but if they stayed on the show, you would have been used to them, just like the title, if it stayed "it's a small world" then the title, "leave it to beaver" would have seemed strange
Harry Shearer would’ve provided a connection between the worlds of leave it to Beaver and spinal tap
I'm glad a couple of the original Actors got changed out. The original guy playing Wally doesn't work for me, nor does that original archetype for Eddie Haskell. And obviously I'm use to Hugh Beaumont playing the Father, not that original guy.
Ken Osmond was definitely a better Eddie.
Hugh Beaumont definitely played a more wholesome father figure. This guy came across as a sarcastic and quick tempered chain smoker.
Some TV shows pick the right cast after the pilot. The Munsters is another example. Look it up.
211 pine ave compared to 285 mapleton (in the earlier shows)
Yes, after shooting for the first two seasons at Republic Studios in a house they said was a 485 Maple Drive (sometimes called Mapleton Drive), Leave it to Beaver moved production to Universal Studios for seasons 3-6 where the house was said to be at 211 Pine Street.
Smart!
How do I see the entire pilot, We watch LITB almost every morning on METV
You won't see it as part of reruns in syndication on MeTV because it was never part of the series.

That's the wrong house exterior shot here at the end. That was used in later versions of the show. The original Cleaver house had an entry stage right with stairs stage left. Living room with easy chair is visible when the camera backs up. This other set was used later and featured entry stage left with stairs stage right. Ward's den/library/office was left of the entry (where a print of Thomas Gainsborough's "Blue Boy" hangs inside the front door - check it out). In these later episodes the Cleavers have moved into a larger set, but this is not a real house - it's a shell in a "fake" neighborhood. For Trivia freaks, this is the house (set) used in "The Desperate Hours" with Humphrey Bogart and Frederick March in 1955.
Not wrong -- this was the pilot -- a practice show filmed to see if CBS would buy the concept. CBS and others made all kinds of changes before they decided to buy the show -- changed actors for Wally and Ward, changed characters for Richard Deacon and Diane Brewster, changed name of show from Small World to Leave it to Beaver, and gave them a new set for the house in a new studio

the first wally was too realistic, calling his little brother stupid and actually getting mad at him....wally was better.
The director probably intentionally had Ward smoking because they didn't have advertisers lined up and wanted to be sure they could "shop" it to tobacco companies. If Casey Adams / Max Showalter kept the role, he would have smoked exactly as much as Hugh Beaumont did, because that wasn't up to either actor.
That being said, Hugh Beaumont is clearly better AS WARD, but Max Showalter had a long and successful acting career. Similarly, Harry Shearer has been far more successful in acting than Ken Osmond was, but Osmond's Eddie was better than Shearer's Frankie for this show.
Perhaps, but showing someone smoke reflected normal lifestyle in the 1950s and tobacco companies sponsored a huge number of shows. Many TV fathers smoked including Steve Douglas on My Three Sons (a pipe), Jim Young on Father Knows Best (yes, in part because of cigarette sponsor), as well Rob Petrie on Dick Van Dyke Show and others.
@@shettrick That's all true. I based my comment on smoking being prevalent in the pilot but not in the series itself. So, something changed.
