  • The first 26-minute episode of the revival series Still the Beaver on commercial-free premium cable service The Disney Channel, which was debuted on Nov. 7, 1984 as the first of 26 episodes on the network before it moved to Ted Turner's WTBS Supersation for three more seasons from 1986-89 under the name The New Leave it to Beaver.
    This series followed a 20th anniversary TV movie reunion in 1983 of most of the cast of the classic black-and-white sitcom Leave it to Beaver that ran from 1957-63. It picks up from the end of the movie with Beaver living at the family home in Mayfield with his two sons and mother June following his divorce (June remains in the home even though in the movie she said she would sell the house to Beaver and move nearby and come to dinner once a week). As established, Beaver works with Lumpy Rutherford, Wally is a lawyer married to his high school sweetheart Mary Ellen Rogers, and Eddie Haskell runs a shyster construction company.
    In this series, Kipp Marcus replaced Corey Feldman as Beaver's oldest son - now called Kipp instead of Corey; Wally suddenly has an elementary school-age daughter called Kelly played by Kaleena Kiff (in the TV movie a year-and-a-half earlier their first child had just been born at the very end and it appeared to be a boy called Ward); Keri Houlihan joined the cast as J.J., Lumpy Rutherford's daughter and best friend of Kelly; Eddie Haskell's son's same switched from Junior in the movie to Frederick "Freddie" Haskell, and the death of Richard Deacon necessitated a new actor in the the role of Mr. Rutherford here.

      Great, yes Disney Channel had nearly 2 million subscribers as a commercial-free premium channel like HBO when Still the Beaver started with this episode in November 1984 and more than doubled that by the time Still the Beaver ended a year later in December 1985, but while two million is a lot of homes, it was just 2% or so of the total number of TV households. Glad you loved Still the Beaver and The New Leave it to Beaver and have found it again here on my channel, where I have resurrected every episode here as originally shown in the 1980s, and without commercials. Here's an improved copy of this episode with some fun extras at beginning...

    It's interesting to see the changes from the 'Still the Beaver' movie to this show. 'Baby Ward' from the 'Still the Beaver' movie is now Kelly (and she's not an infant), Corey is now Kip, Wally now lives right next door instead of in his custom house, 'young Edward' Haskell is now Freddie, and June didn't move to some condo.

      @oooh19 Did you even watch the TV movie that served as the pilot to this new series, which aired just one year prior to this? No, Wally and Mary Ellen did not have a baby out of wedlock. SMH. On the contrary, a major theme in the TV movie is that they had tried for years to have children, as a *married* couple, and could not. But at the end of the movie, Mary Ellen finally became pregnant, and she gave birth to a baby boy, whom Wally appropriately named Ward, in honor of his father. But then the goofy writers just totally scrapped all of that and replaced baby Ward with an 8 or 9-year-old daughter the very next year! So incredibly stupid.

    • @shettrick
      @shettrick  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, I was surprised also to learn several years ago that legal ownership issues have prevented the show from being seen anywhere for 30 years. My understanding is that the shows were not lost, although it's unclear whether they were part of a 2008 fire at Universal Studios that destroyed 40,000 video and audio masters. The biggest problem was that the man who bought the rights to the series from Universal in late 1980s (Turner never owned it -- he just licensed the show from owner Universal for first few years) became a federal fugitive and went into hiding in Spain and then died, leaving the ownership rights in a legal quagmire. Because the series was not a huge ratings success and wasn't widely seen or popular, none of the entities involved have ever been interested enough ever since to go to the trouble and expense to sort it all out.
      So, it does appear I may be the only one, or one of the few, who has every episode exactly as they were originally shown on CBS, then Disney Channel, then WTBS. Glad you are enjoying them.

      Right, at the very end of the movie (which I also posted on this channel), Wally and Mary Ellen have a baby but it happens so quick in the last few seconds and it sounds like he probably says the child's name is Ward but it's impossible to hear for sure and there is no other mention of the name or gender of the child. In any case, you're right that by start of this series a year later their first child - a daughter named Kelly - is already in elementary school. A couple seasons later they do have a son they name Kevin who also grows very quickly on the show.

      And yes, I watched the movie on your channel.
      I remember the baby being named Ward, because when they were carrying the baby from the car, they said something about the baby even having Wards ears, which was a reference/ flashback to a part in the movie where Ward tells Wally about how he used to tape his ears back when he was a kid.
      I didn’t like Corey Feldman as Beavers son, he came off as too sullen.

      Glad you enjoyed. Actually, this series began with a CBS TV movie in 1983 (also here on my UA-cam channel), then became a TV series on The Disney Channel for one season of 26 episodes in 1984-85 before Ted Turner picked it up for three more seasons on his TBS Superstation from 1986-89. It ran briefly in reruns in some countries, including Canada, in early 1990s for a couple years.
      You're right that's it's been overlooked ever since and has never been put on DVD or shown in reruns, and that's because it became entangled in a legal mess and ownership rights are still unclear. Also, it's believed the Master tapes and copies were destroyed in a huge fire at Universal Studios in 2008 that destroyed tens of thousands of tapes. So, that's why I have been uploading my Betamax tape copies from 1980s since this show cannot otherwise be seen anywhere.

    Never knew this was on in the 80s. It surprisingly work. But Eddie is the star. He actually works better as a adult. To bad it's badly degraded. Don't think the series was repeated and residuals. Ken said tape were lost in a vault.

    • @shettrick
      @shettrick  5 місяців тому

      The series has never been seen again anywhere since early 1990s due to a legal quagmire over ownership / distribution rights. It's also uncertain whether the Master tapes were among the 40,000 video and audio Masters destroyed in a fire at Universal Studios. Thus, I spent two years resurrecting, transferring and upgrading the Betamax tape recordings I made of each episode exactly as each episode were originally shown. I also improved and re-posted this first episode here two years ago: ua-cam.com/video/caZU1Uj5fd0/v-deo.html

    Barbara's intro should have included "and my beloved husband Ward is now in heaven" it was wrong for them to ignore Ward in the series it should have had many more flashback scenes in every episode so we could have seen Hugh Beaumont in old footage giving good advice to Wally and Beaver and they use that advice for their own kids in every episode.

    • @shettrick
      @shettrick  Рік тому +2

      Oh my goodness, you obviously didn't watch the series -- there are more references to Ward, more highlights of him, more times when characters recall his advice with flashbacks, and more dedications and tributes to Ward and Hugh Beaumont than any series has ever done for any former character and actor. They even have Beaumont's real sister flown in for a touching Thanksgiving scene with Ward's sister.

      @@shettrick I have not seen every episode if you put together a montage of all the Ward flashback scenes that would be great to see where we see the old footage then the new scene where Wally or Beaver use that old advice with their own kids.

      @@moviesgalore9947 Haha, well, first of all it would take me longer to put together that kind of montage than it would take you to watch every episode. And that would be taking them out of context, which is what makes them the most powerful. Also, copyright issues on Leave it to Beaver clips restrict each one to just a few seconds each.
      For starters, did you not see the touching montage tribute to Ward in the original 1983 TV reunion movie Still the Beaver? Here are just five minutes of highlights from that tribute: ua-cam.com/video/rByIMy9DGlc/v-deo.html
      Also, there is
      Also, since you made such a critical judgment in your comment, you must also be unaware there was an entire episode devoted to memories of Ward Cleaver. Here is that episode, minus eight minutes of the full length of each Leave it to Beaver clip that I had to cut for copyright restrictions, but each one is still represented so you will understand that this series did not "ignore Ward in the series," as you wrote, and did in fact "have many flashback scenes," which you claimed it did not: ua-cam.com/video/I4_IWEoG7M0/v-deo.html
      Finally, here's a highlight of an example of where this series did exactly what you say it should have done -- Ward "in old footage giving good advice to Wally and Beaver who use that advice for their own kids" (you obviously also made that criticism without knowing what the show did): ua-cam.com/video/lkkyJJSdi1Q/v-deo.html
      Hopefully all this will give you a better appreciation of this series in general, but more importantly help you restrain yourself from making judgmental criticisms of things before you know whether or not your criticisms are accurate.

Those days it showed more on families sticking together. Divorce wasn't even an issue. If it was it was quiet because it was a big issue. Today there's too much hatred & violence being taught on TV. I watched the first episode of this when it first came out, and there seems to be some key scenes missing at the very beginning that shows the family leaving the funeral of Ward Cleaver during a rain storm, and how Theodore came to split from his wife and came back to live with his mom. Why was this left out??? Can you explain this Scott??

      Yes, you're confused - you're thinking of the TV reunion movie also called Still the Beaver in March 1983 that I also posted on here prior to this first episode of the series that followed the movie a year and a half later

      You're thinking of the original 1983 CBS Still the Beaver TV reunion movie shown a year-and-a-half before this first episode of the 1984-85 Disney Channel series. I posted that movie here as well, shortly before this episode

      Worked well enough to be the highest-rated original scripted series on The Disney Channel at that time and as popular as many broadcast network shows in Disney Channel homes, and worked well enough for Ted Turner to make an unprecedented commitment to order 75 more new episodes (three seasons) in advance. None of that means you need to think it works for you, but it does mean a lot of people did like it 40 years ago, and my 101 videos of the episodes are generating thousands and tens of thousands of views, so there are others enjoying it.

      @@theancientlink7800 You obviously don't know my work -- probably one of biggest proponents of letter-boxing and preserving original aspect rations in Hollywood when I was working journalist for L.A. Times, Variety, Hollywood Reporter. I'm not sensitive about this; just wondering why you would use such a strong word and make such a strong comment about a cable TV sitcom. If you're enjoying this show being seen and available for the first time in nearly 30 years, isn't that enough -- your first and only comment has to be about the format? In the words of Jack Nicholson, I'd prefer you just say thank you and be on your way. I'm doing the best I can in getting these transferred at all from my 1980s Betamax tapes.

      @@shettrick No, I don't know your work. Should I? Are you a household name? And strong word? Do you mean vandalize? You never answered my question. Did you ruin these episodes? If not, I don't even understand what your offense is about. I loved the show, but no, not enough to watch it after they were butchered this badly. Considering your resume claims, one would think you would agree that they have been vandalized.

    • @shettrick
      @shettrick  5 років тому +2

      @@theancientlink7800 Yes, you should know who someone is before you accuse them of vandalizing. And yes vandalizing and now "butchered" are strong words you are using without provocation. If you want to have a civil discussion without name-calling and severe judgment, I'd be happy to do that. If you want to help do better resurrections of this show you loved, I'd be happy for the help and suggestions. These are original recordings from original broadcast and on Betamax, so they are in the original Academy ratio. When I play them back for transfer they get expanded to full screen. I know I could figure out how to put them back to original aspect ratio but it is not a high priority for me, just as it is not a high priority to do a more professional transfer to get better audio and video quality. It's enough for most of us to finally be able to see this show again that has been lost for decades. Sorry you are not happy with the butchering and vandalizing.

      Give me a break - do you think I and everyone else isn't aware of this? I have spent 18-months transferring these, starting with not knowing anything about how to do it, so I just videotaped off the TV for the reunion movie and first 14 episodes of series before I figured out how to do it properly, then spent months transferring the next 77 episodes and just went back and re-did the movie properly.
      Stop complaining and just enjoy - stop being the guy who complains about his kid getting a B in once class even though he got all A's in his other classes.

    • @shettrick
      @shettrick  3 роки тому

      Yes, in the last few seconds of the 1983 CBS Still the Beaver reunion TV movie they show Wally and Mary Ellen coming home with a baby boy and it sounds like they are going to call him Ward. And Beaver's oldest son also changed from Corey to Kip. And they changed the actor playing Fred Rutherford. Like many shows, including the original Leave it to Beaver where the original pilot had different actors playing Ward and Wally and a different smart-aleck character instead of Eddie Haskell, producer and writers change things for when the original movie or pilot gets made into a series. In this case, they gave Wally and Mary Ellen an older daughter in elementary school so there wouldn't just be three boys and so the show would have appeal to young girls as well, and they replaced Corey Feldman with Kipp Marcus. And Richard Deacon died after the 1983 movie so they had to get a different actor to play Mr. Rutherford in first few episodes of the late 1984 series before they eliminated his character.
