Hi Jörg, thanks for the comment and for pointing out what I forgot to include. I remember those effects, but I personally never use them. Would however have been good to still include them in the tutorial. Cheers, Sean
Thanks for the video, it made it a quick task to set up my new camera and gain an understanding of the settings, as well as how to set the camera for manual mode.
I am waiting for my SX740 HS to be delivered. Since there are very little difference with the 730, your video is extremely useful. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and share it.
I just got this camera (a gift from my mom ❤) and so excited to use it but after watching your tutorial I'm super excited to start taking pictures and videos ! Awesome tutorial...clear, concise, and fun to watch ! Thanks so much! 🤗🤗🤗
Dara K. Fulton - Thanks for watching and for sharing your kind feedback. Wishing you lots of fun and fulfillment using your new camera. What will you mostly be shooting with it?
Thank you so much for this video. I am trying to figure out the best setting for star and night sky pictures and you gave me a lead with that. It is great having a guide to show us functions many of us do not know how to use.
Thank you so much for the overview. I just purchased this camera. It was really helpful. Just a note: SCN (Scene mode) has other options besides the Toy option. I use the low light option quite a bit. There's Portrait, Smooth Skin, Smart Shutter to detect faces, Hand held night scene, Low Light, Monochrome, Soft Focus, Fish-eye effect, Miniature effect, Toy Camera, Super vivid, Poster effect and Fireworks.

I have the same machine, but I don’t use all its functions, now thanks for your guidance, I understand a lot more about its features. Thanks for your sharing, it’s very useful for everyone, I think so.
I am currently in search of a vlogging camera (2021) Someone recommended this one as being an excellent starter camera. Thanks for the information shared to us. I will definitely save this video for future reference.
Hey Janet, thanks for your kind feedback. Yes, I would say that the Canon SX730 is a great starter camera. Just keep in mind that it only shoots up to 1080 and not 4K. Alternatively, if you have a fairly modern mobile phone, then that could also be a great camera to use. I've shot multiple videos on both iPhone 6, iPhone 8 and now I'm using the iPhone 12 Mini. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Sean
Thank you so much for sharing this useful tips and tricks! I got this camera for my birthday and I'm sure I will make lots and lots of beautiful photos and videos😃😃😃
@@Sean_Twomey thank you! I will be using my camera for taking photos of nature😃❣and hopefully some day for portraits 😉. Regards from The Netherlands 🇳🇱 😀
Most interesting. I just bought the SX 620 HS today and I am a bit annoyed it has an automatic mode only (which I was aware of before buying it). Maybe a bit frustrated, I took a look at your video and I was much surprised to see how clearly you went into the details of this 730 HS. I may return my camera within 15 days and choose a 730 HS they told me. Although more expensive I will think about it. And now you have 1 000 thumbs up! Congratulations!
Hi Guy, thank you for watching and commenting. Whatever you decide, I hope you end up with the camera that you enjoy. Thanks for the 1000th like. Appreciate your engagement and am glad you found my video helpful. PS: If you do decide to purchase the 730 via Amazon, I'd appreciate if you use my link: amzn.to/2CSF9qk - Thanks
Thanks so much for this video! I just go the newer version of this, the SX740 HS, and the instructions leave a lot to be desired about all the different modes.
kuabarra - Thanks for the comment and I’m glad you found it useful. I just read yo the specs for the 740 and see they’ve added 4K, which is a great addition. Enjoy your new camera 😊
Thanks for this video. I haven't found the user manual very helpful at all - too much toggling back and forth from one link to another, and too much technical language - but your walk-through cleared up some of my questions.
Wow!! I found the manual to be of little to no help....I think a programmer wrote it. I wanted to change settings for taking pictures of the aurora borealis and was about to go back to my old camera....then I found this video. Hurrah! Success....Thank you, so much!
Thanks for the clear explanation. But what is the best setting on this camera to capture the Northern Lights? The P position? And which settings within P mode?
I recommend using a tripod, a self timer and then set it to long exposure (open the shutter for longer to let in more light). Having said that, this camera probably won’t get you the best results shooting in low light conditions, but you can still give it a try.

Hello, this was a great, detailed video. Thank you. One question, when filming a UA-cam video & vlogging, what aspect ratio should the camera be in?
Hi, you want to film in 16:9 aspect ratio. When using the video recording mode on the camera, then it automatically records in that aspect ratio. I hope that help. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Sean
Mohammad Mandora - Sounds like you looking for a higher end camera. Either a mirror less or SLR, which are not as compact and come at a higher price point. I hope you find what you’re looking for. 👍
HI Sean, Thank you so much for making this video. I have the SX720 HS digital wifi version. It is quite similar so your video is still helpful to me. However, I have a question: whenever I connect the camera to the my smart TV I am able to see the pictures (folders, etc) but I am unable to view the videos. Why is this?
We love this camera. Your video is great. We use this camera for lots of flower close ups and having problems keeping it in macro and getting a good focus. Exactly how does the macro work? Can you manually adjust the focus? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dennis Hodgkins - Hey Dennis, yes you can manually set the camera into Macro when you’re in manual mode, but I don’t actually believe you can focus manually. When the camera is on auto, then it automatically switches to macro mode when an object is close enough to the lens. I hope this helps. Happy shooting. Cheers, Sean
Hi Sean, Thanks for the great Tutorial, I’ve had my SX730 a few days now & starting to get used to it but I find it odd that there is no Landscape Setting, or not one that I can find anyway.... The camera was bought as we are going to Austria on holiday & so a lot of the photos I will be taking will be of Mountains, Lakes etc, which setting would you recommend for this? Obviously I realise I can put it onto Auto but with other cameras I’ve had I always used the Landscape option for Scenery .... Thank you
Maxine Banner Hi Maxine, I would stick with Auto, as there is no dedicated landscape mode. If you’re unhappy with the results you get on auto, you could switch to either Tv, Av or M, but then you’ll need to manually set aperture and/or shutter speed. Enjoy your trip and happy shooting 😊🏞
No, this model does not have an external mic input. If that's what you're after, I'd recommend this one: ua-cam.com/video/pyJpvuRA85E/v-deo.htmlsi=24XI8PUboOzlCkES
Set dimensions to 16:9, which is the default video mode. I've never been too concerned about frame rate. Check out this video if you want to learn more: ua-cam.com/video/_BYj8lhUh3s/v-deo.html
Hey Summer Vlogs, thanks for your kind comment. I answered your question in one of your other comments. Here it is again: ===== Hey, I've been using a SanDisk 32GB (40 MB/s) SD card in my Canon Powershot SX730HS, which has worked fine for me. Here is the closest that I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/31l7ftb If you're going to shoot loads and loads of footage, then get a larger SD card (64 GB or 128GB). The writing speed X MB/s is important so that the camera can write the data to the disc without a problem. As I said for me, the 40 MB/s card has worked perfectly, but I don't see an issue if you get a card that supports a faster speed. On the official user manual for this camera (www.canon.co.za/cameras/powershot-sx730-hs/specifications/), they state: Memory Card Type: Type SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS Speed Class 1 compatible) Here is an interesting article to read: petapixel.com/2014/06/24/back-basics-difference-sd-sdhc-sdxc-best/ Here is an excerpt from that article: ======== "First off you might be asking yourself, ‘What is SD?’ SD stands for Secure Digital. SDHC? Secure Digital High Capacity. And SDXC? Secure Digital eXtended Capacity. Other formats include miniSD and microSD but your DSLR will not accept these. There is no quality/security difference between these three formats. Cards labeled SDHC usually have a capacity of 4GB - 32GB. SDXC formats can be very large and expensive. For the purpose of this guide, I am going to recommend that everyone stick with SDHC format. These cards have more than enough storage, even for the most trigger-happy shutterbug. You will see a Class 2,4,6 or 10 on SD Cards. This is the speed rating which measures maximum transfer speed for reading and writing images to and from a memory card, expressed as megabytes per second. However, video doesn’t need as big a data pipe because the video format is a smaller “fixed stream” that uses only a portion of the data pipe." ======== I hope this helps. Have a great weekend. When you set the camera on flash mode, does the flash automatically pop up when you taking pictures? or you have to manually use the switch button first to pop up the flash before taking pictures with flash?

I enjoyed learning about the 730 with Sean. Thanks a lot. The explanations were easy to understand and included all the important subjects, not to compare to the poor tutorial from Canon.
Hi, sorry for my delayed reply. When shooting at night, always use a tripod and use the timer to minimize/avoid shake caused by your hands. Cheers, Sean
I like to use the VGA setting when recording videos because they fit on the cd better when down loading. It is going to be a bear to find, I have a new 720XS coming in tomorrow by mail . It is going to take me a few minutes to learn how to set it on VGA recording.
Good tutorial Sean Thank you. There is a dark shadow that appears in the same spot on both still pictures and videos replays. How do I get rid of it?... Bob
Thanks for your reply. Apologies for my very delayed response. Did you ever get this sorted? It’s tough for me to provide feedback without seeing an example of what you are referring to.

Hi there nice guide, I know this video was posted a while ago but wonder if you could advise, when filming video there is a black blur at the edge of the screen when moving the camera. Probably going to send it back unless there is something that can be done in settings to fix this? Thanks
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, that does not sound right. I'd contact Canon support or get a replacement unit. I hope you get it sorted. Cheers, Sean
Hi, thanks for the questions. For vlogging, I just shoot using auto on the video recording mode. It's simple and works for me.Then I use the flip screen to monitor my shot as I film (framing, lighting balance, etc.). Hope this helps.
Awesome video. I just happened to lost my manual book and I found you. I’m not tec person at all, I would like to know after finishing shooting the video, how to transfer to laptop if you can show me. Many thanks ❤️
Thanks for your comment. To transfer data from the camera to your laptop, you can either connect the camera via a USB cable, or you can remove the SD card and use an SD card reader. You can also use the Canon app to wirelessly transfer images.
Thanks, are you editing on a computer or phone? Please answer, and if on the computer can you do a guide to the editors on the computer? So, thank you so much !!!
Thanks for your comment. I edit my videos on a MacBook Pro as doing 99% of all digitally creative tasks (like editing) can be completed more efficiently and more enjoyable using a laptop or desktop computer vs using a phone.
Thanks for the question. I do believe there is an option for manual focus in the M (manual) mode, but you need to use the circular dial to focus, which is rather clunky and impractical, so I never ever use it. But I also at times miss quick manual focus.
What would you suggest for indoor pictures? I keep trying different settings but am finding some come out blurry and some clear. I can't figure out why.
Thank you so much for the Canon SX730 tutorial. You did a fantastic job on it. I have an another question: Is there any remote control (except for smartphone control) for SX730 or SX740?
Hi, thanks for your kind words. I don't believe there is a separate remote for this camera. What you can use it the delayed timer, but that's not the same as a remote. I hope that helps. Cheers, Sean
I used to use Screenflow for Mac and now I've switched to Final Cut Pro X and am loving it. Back in the day I used Microsoft Movie Maker and I've also used iMovie. Start with whatever you have and then upgrade depending on what you need.
For the price and form factor, I feel it's excellent! Especially for wildlife photography, I've gotten some great shots. Check out this section of video - ua-cam.com/video/rRi3wG3wl7k/v-deo.html - It will give you an idea of how I've used it for wildlife videography. I hope this helps. Cheers, Sean
Hi Sean, great video with so much useful content! Do you know if there's voice activated camera shooting? When zooming in on an object it's impossible to avoid camera shake without a tripod. There's a 2 second delay self timer but I want to avoid using that because I'm shooting birds. Thank you!
Hi, apologies for my delayed reply. No, I don't believe this camera has voice activated shooting. It might support some type of remote, but I'm not sure. Best for shooting birds would be using a tripod and timer. Alternatively, you would need to spend more on a higher end camera with a telephoto lens and better image stabilisation.
Hi Sean. Newbie here. I’ve ordered this model for backpacking/ sightseeing adventures. I’ve only ever used iPhones for pictures. I plan on primarily using Auto for pictures, but do you have any tips or videos on how to play around with the shutter speed and aperture for neat pics using this model? Thanks for your wisdom
I generally shoot in auto for photos and video, but no doubt the manual setting will give you more control. I'll add this to my list of videos to create, but I'm not sure if and when I'll get around to creating that. The best I'd recommend would be to play around with the manual setting before you start traveling to familiarise yourself with what gets you the best results. I hope that helps. Cheers
Hi! thank you for this video. I'm wondering if you know how to disable the screen while shooting time lapse videos. I'm trying to conserve battery time. Thank you.
Hi Edward, thanks for watching and commenting. I don't believe you can completely disable the display. What you could do is turn down the brightness. I also know that the SX730 does not have a specific time lapse feature. It's a feature they've added to the SX740, along with 4K.
Hi, also make sure to check out my video "Canon PowerShot SX730 HS Unboxing & Full Review" - ua-cam.com/video/CEE73B5mA1Y/v-deo.html In that video I provide examples of the sound from the internal mic. I hope that help. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Sean

Awesome video. I just ordered this camera and will get it in a few days. In the past I always looked for cameras with better than average wide angle capability for great indoor shots. I was attracted to this camera because the lens is 24-960mm (35mm equiv). Did I get the right camera? Is there a wide angle setting?
crimdell - Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you enjoyed this video. This camera does have a fish eye effect, which I never use. There is no other wide angle setting. The lens is what it is, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy this camera. Have you watched my other review video of this model? ua-cam.com/video/CEE73B5mA1Y/v-deo.html
@@Sean_Twomey Thanks, I just watched the other video and it confirms I made a good choice in getting this camera. My current camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 that I have had for at least 7-8 years. I got it specifically because it is designated as wide angle, for the reason I mentioned before. That camera is a 25mm equivalent. I'm no camera expert, but it seems that the 24mm of this Canon should be as wide angle capable as my Panasonic, even though it is not a designated wide angle. I will take some photos soon, side-by-side, and compare them.
Hi! I just recently got this camera and want to use it for filming or possibly in a webcam fashion to stream. Would I be able to plug it in to a computer and function the camera still? I’m not too sure as to if the micro hdmi port would help me accomplish this. Thanks!
I'm not sure. I've tested with the USB cable and that does not work. I don't have the HDMI cable to try it, but it might work with that. Let us know if you manage to test this.
toos Van Gompel - You can take the photos manually and then stitch them together in post production, which is the old fashioned way. Or else use your smartphone if it has a pano feature. I generally shoot pano on my iPhone 8.
@@toosvangompel7378 I'm not sure, as I don't have experience with that specific device. I would, however, expect them to have a similar function for their camera app.
Hey, I just switch the dial to video mode and shoot. I called Canon and it does have this but it is not easily located in the manual. His instructions to me were: 1. Rotate dial to Video mode 2. Hit FUNC 3. Scroll down to FHP 4. Move right and find 4 options, one of which is 60FPS. I don't have the camera yet but that is what I was told.

Awesome, enjoy the camera and let me know if you have any questions. What will you be using the camera for?
@@Sean_Twomey thank you! I will be using my camera for taking photos of nature😃❣and hopefully some day for portraits 😉.

PS: If you do decide to purchase the 730 via Amazon, I'd appreciate if you use my link: amzn.to/2CSF9qk - Thanks
my 730 just arrived yday. i bought it because of your review video. thanks for this follow up tutorial video. it helps a lot :)
forestcitygirl - Im glad you found the review helpful. Are you enjoying your camera?
Thank you for your response on my comment. I’ll keep watching your next video.
Sean, thank you so much for this in depth and super informative video on this Canon model. Incredibly helpful!!
Thanks for letting me know Natalie, I'm glad you found it helpful.
Hi Brenda, I'm glad you found my video useful. Thanks for your kind words. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Sean
Wow!! I found the manual to be of little to no help....I think a programmer wrote it. I wanted to change settings for taking pictures of the aurora borealis and was about to go back to my old camera....then I found this video. Hurrah! Success....Thank you, so much!
Pat Van Dorn - Glad you found my video and enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting. Happy shooting!
This has been a real help. Stripped out a lot of the unnecessary jargon. Dankie.
Thanks Neil, glad you enjoyed it. 👍
I wasn't sure if I'm gonna buy the SX730 HS before seeing your review. Great job man!!
Hi Mohammad, thanks for the comment and I'm glad you found it helpful.
I just had it for two days, unfortunately i'm gonna return it!! The image quality isn't that clear. Any suggestions for alternatives?
I just received my camera and it appears very good. I will keep the team posted.
Jim Bullard - I’m glad to hear that and thanks for the comment. Do share any thoughts, lessons or questions. Enjoy!
Sean P Twomey Ok, Thank you, I will see how I get on with that ... 😊
You will be good with this camera specially in sunny or well lit situations, remember to take some tripod, so you can take advantage of the zoom!
@@eliseoborrerobass why, is it because there's no stabilizator?
Great video, I came up with a question. Can you add microphone to this camera?
No, this model does not have an external mic input. If that's what you're after, I'd recommend this one: ua-cam.com/video/pyJpvuRA85E/v-deo.htmlsi=24XI8PUboOzlCkES
Hi! If I am filming a video for youtube with this camera do you know what I should set the frame and dimensions to???
Set dimensions to 16:9, which is the default video mode. I've never been too concerned about frame rate. Check out this video if you want to learn more: ua-cam.com/video/_BYj8lhUh3s/v-deo.html
I loved you video! So helpful! I am getting this camera and was wondering what SD card size is ideal for this camera
Hey Summer Vlogs, thanks for your kind comment. I answered your question in one of your other comments. Here it is again:
=====
Hey, I've been using a SanDisk 32GB (40 MB/s) SD card in my Canon Powershot SX730HS, which has worked fine for me. Here is the closest that I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/31l7ftb
If you're going to shoot loads and loads of footage, then get a larger SD card (64 GB or 128GB). The writing speed X MB/s is important so that the camera can write the data to the disc without a problem. As I said for me, the 40 MB/s card has worked perfectly, but I don't see an issue if you get a card that supports a faster speed.
On the official user manual for this camera (www.canon.co.za/cameras/powershot-sx730-hs/specifications/), they state:
Memory Card Type: Type SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS Speed Class 1 compatible)
Here is an interesting article to read: petapixel.com/2014/06/24/back-basics-difference-sd-sdhc-sdxc-best/
Here is an excerpt from that article:
========
"First off you might be asking yourself, ‘What is SD?’ SD stands for Secure Digital.
However, video doesn’t need as big a data pipe because the video format is a smaller “fixed stream” that uses only a portion of the data pipe."
========
I hope this helps. Have a great weekend.
Cheers, Sean

This camera does not have a mic input, so you would need to record audio separately/on a separate device and sync in post production.

I like to use the VGA setting when recording videos because they fit on the cd better when down loading. It is going to be a bear to find, I have a new 720XS coming in tomorrow by mail . It is going to take me a few minutes to learn how to set it on VGA recording.

Great video Sean...….what i miss in this camera is.
Can i change the focus point for making a photo?
Thanks for the question. I do believe there is an option for manual focus in the M (manual) mode, but you need to use the circular dial to focus, which is rather clunky and impractical, so I never ever use it. But I also at times miss quick manual focus.

Thank you very much for the tutorial, i just have one question, how do i set my camera to take a panoramic view photo

Hey there, one question: Can you manual focus in movie recording? Or manual exposure in movie recording? Thanks.

toos Van Gompel - From my experience, this camera unfortunately does not offer a pano mode.
@@Sean_Twomey thanks for your answer, that is bad, I hoped I could take this kind of pictures with it :(
toos Van Gompel - You can take the photos manually and then stitch them together in post production, which is the old fashioned way. Or else use your smartphone if it has a pano feature. I generally shoot pano on my iPhone 8.
does this "pano "mode also excist on a samsung galaxy 8 plus smartphone ?
@@toosvangompel7378 I'm not sure, as I don't have experience with that specific device. I would, however, expect them to have a similar function for their camera app.
What are the best settings for recording travel vlogs ? Or even sit down vlogs?
Hey, I just switch the dial to video mode and shoot. Hi does this camera have a slow motion setting? I have the camera but am not sure how to shoot in slow motion or if it even does. Let me know thanks!
Hey Adam, no it does not have a slow mo function. You'd have to create slo mo in post production. Cheers, Sean
Just seen this vid, very useful.

Also can u shoot RAW or Raw+Jpeg ?
Hi David, thanks - seems like I did forget to include a things. Thanks for pointing them out.

No worries I am looking at a new camera at the moment.
Something like this might suit the job. Lol.
It was one of those recommended vids so I took a look.
I don't like Auto ISO, I always change that.
A useful vid for me lol thanks.
Thanks so much my mum ordered the sx740 for me it’s really good 👊🏽🔥
Hey Jay, I’m stoked to hear that. Thanks for your comment and happy shooting in 4K. I’m considering upgrading to the SX740. Have a great weekend. Cheers, Sean
Hi Sean, Will the 40 X zoom work equally well on all the other settings as well as on AUTO? Thanks again.
Hi Vajragupta, yes the zoom should work fine. Just keep in mind that the more you zoom in the more any camera movement is amplified, so best to use a tripod or not zoom in all the way when shooting hand held. Hope this helps.
