Nine years later i learned so much about this camera. It was sitting in my bag for years and i just dicovered what a good camera it is. Thanks to your video’s i use it more now.
Thank you, sir. Had my Canon since 2010 and taken all across home and abroad and have remained stuck on automode. My regret is I’ve missed many an opportunity to create better/superior shots. I know want quality over quantity and you are opening my eyes to this
Just found and bought this camera at a thrift shop. Was very pleased to see you did videos on this camera which were very helpful in setting it up to get the best out of it. Great work!
I appreciate the way you explain the features of the Canon camera. I use the Canon SX40hs and find your presentation very useful to understand...I look forward to seeing many such great videos from you.
Mr. Houghton, Finding your videos illuminating the vagaries and details of properly using this wonderful camera, the SX700 HS (I just acquired one after months of deliberation) has been nothing short of a blessing to me. I've even after your videos to a very short list of useful things I've found on the WWW. Patient, thorough and delivered in a comforting 'instructors' voice. Very well done indeed. For me and all who aren't able to send a note. My, our, heartfelt thanks. .
I have had my Canon 260 for almost 5 years and still learning some of the things on it. I really enjoyed your 1 and 2 video. Will watch more latter. Thank You
Great videos. Much better than wading through the huge manual to learn all the capabilities of my Cannon camera. Crystal clear video, easy to listen to audio, couldn't hope for anything more.
Another brilliant video. I've been shooting in Program mode, but my knowledge has been very limited. Thank you for your thorough and precise explanations. Can't wait to try some different things I've learned. I need to make some flash cards from the notes I've taken, until it all because 2nd nature.
Thank you so much Graham. Your video explanations are amazing. I know the Canon Powershot HS is a great camera but until now I can see it being an amazing point and shoot that can produce HD quality images with the right settings. Thanks again!
Hi Graham I bought this camera 10 days ago canon SX620 HS from jessops I asked the man to set it up for me so I could take clear sharp photos straight away as I was going on holiday for a few days he had it in auto mode for me said it would take fantastic pictures ,got home took pictures and they were terrible very out of focus very grainy and lots of noise it looked like I had taken them from a very old camera phone was not pleased at all called them up said I wanted to change it for another camera man said fine not a problem ,then I seen your video and changed all the settings to what you said then wow wot a difference sharp clear and no noise ,why the man from jessops didn't ask to go through the settings I don't know ,I was very frustrated messing with all my settings going from auto to manual for about a week ,my question is you know you set your iOS to 100 should I keep it at that all the time all say in doors out doors and night time I just photograph normal every day things family dogs children and scenery I just like my photos to be clear no noise and not grainy should I keep my settings iso at 100 hope you are still on here to help me out .cheers jon
I have just got Canon SX50HS. This video easy to listen to audio, couldn't hope for anything more.Thank you for video ! best regards from Slowenia - EU.
Hi, thanks for the comment. The 1/125 @ f11 with ISO 100 was a 'golden number' for film days. Not many of the compact digital cameras actually have a f11 aperture, most stop at f8 so 1/250 is the sunny setting now and 1/25 the cloudy.
Thanks again for the comment, its a nice camera but a little short of wide angle at 28mm compare to the HX20v 24mm. It really does make a difference the extra 4mm for landscape and cityscape picture.
Thanks for helping me understand how to override the exposure value on my Canon SX710 (very similar to SX700). (I had difficulty figuring this out on my own - and I'm a fairly technical guy), At any rate, I'm looking forward to creating my own HDR "high dynamic range" compositions by adjusting the exposure and then merging the results in Photoshop. Wish me luck.
Thank so much Graham…..for a long time I'm Canon camera lover; even now I got Samsung Galaxy Camera, brand new..with all those sofisticate future.. but?…….I'm still using My Canon power shot and with this amazing videos we learn how to use it in the right way at the right situation……Thanks again
Hello Graham can you recommend the right batteries please I no sooner put recharged ones in and it shows dead batts I am glad I found your section it's showing me lots of things Stewart.
I bought replacement batteries from Amazon but they are also widely available on other sites such as EBAY, just search for batteries the canon powershot model you have to bring up the suppliers.
I have a cannon powershot a1400 sitting in my drawer because I didn't understand the concepts. Your explanations were very helpful and might encourage me to purchase a more advanced camera in the future. Thank you
Hi, it sounds like the camera is selecting a long shutter time because the level of light is very low. If you are indoors and the flash is enabled you should not get this effect. Are you indoors? are you using the pop up flash in auto mode? Try using just the Auto mode as this will select the correct scene type for you when it recognises faces
First of, thank you for your tutorials on the canon Powershot HS. Tutorial 3 is a lot to take. Since this part is difficult and so much, I would splitt this one up.
That's interesting. A neighbour has just done a similar course which was just 3 hours long - really insufficient once you go through introductions, health and safety and have a coffee break in there. I used to teach photography ( a few years ago now) and I had thought of trying to find a like minded partner to offer tuition. I approached one lady who does street photography but she didn't feel confident enough to do it so I stepped back a little. I'll email you.
Graham , your video is so helpful, I have learned a lot, just by going through the steps with you., for I bought the sx270 HS canon , and I am so happy with this , plus with your help it makes it a whole lot easier for me to understand .This is better than reading the book( which it did not come with) you did a great job in explaining the process of each step ... please make more,, were would STEP 3 be?
Hi Karen if you go to my home page there is Powershot playlist with 5 videos in there where you will find all the tutorials in this series, thanks for your comment - really appreciated
Great set of tutorials that helped me fall in love with this camera again... only thing that I'm a bit peeved at is the low level formatting.... I had thought my file numbering would still be kept in tact, sadly not :(
Could you please help me? I just bought sx240 and I'm having trouble taking photos of my 2year old, most of them are blurry/ghost.....I used to have ixsus 200is and there I used kids&pets. Which scene/mode should I use???
Usually the software workflow always sets the ISO to the lowest ISO in the P mode and then moves F stop after setting shutter to a value which will prevent camera shake. You should see a change in shutter speed.
GREAD videos ... could you let me know if the camera Canon Powershot SX240 HS Digital Camera - Black (12.1 MP, 20x Optical Zoom) 3.2 Inch LCD has a self timer ??? thanks
Graham! you know what?.. Your videos are awesome, I learn a lot, tho Im just as beginner in photography.. but little by little with your help (your good explanations), I learn how to use my Canon sx500 IS in the right way.. :) Thank you
I have had this camera for a few months. I really like it, but have trouble with action shots being blurry, and when using the the flash, it seems to take a long time to focus and take the pic. Any suggestions? Thanks! (I enjoy your help videos very much). Keri Ann
hi Graham ,set my 700 up just like your vid ,good for bird shots .But macro mode was blury and when the picture was only half good ,it did not fill the screen ,been using my now broke tz 30 lumix for macro ,and say a close up of a beetle on a leaf ,it filled the whole screen, and also i could stand back a little and zoom still in macro mode ,and perfect ,any pointers i would be gratefull for, thanks ,mat
Hi, I have an sx 510 hs and would like to know if there is a setting on which I can take action shots with it. I understand nothing of cameras and just want to set it and shoot. Thanks.
Nothing to do with your excellent videos, but I find moving the rubber sliding button on my sx220, to access the battery, difficult - can't get a grip on it - any tips?
Mr Houghton thank you for such a video , my problem is i have just got Canon SX50HS, I wonder if you have a video lesson for this camera or can you tell me if i can use the same settings as your SX video . Have a nice Christmas and a Happy New Year . Oh is your book available in the shops?
hi, thank you for your comment. There is some similarity of the SX50HS and the compacts so you should be able to learn some of the features from these videos. the book is an eBook and available only here on www.grahamhoughton.co.uk
hello Graham. thanks for your great tutorials:) is there any chance you could do a tutorial on the Canon Powershot SX 60 HS? it has so many features its mind boggling! thanks g
ot very well, these small sensor cameras have lots of depth of field. the only way to get that look is to use maximum telephoto and get as close to your subject as you can and then keep the subject as far away from the background as you can
Thanks for the valuable information. Want you to know it is appreciated and extremely helpful I have a Canon Powershot 340 HS. Now I'm really looking forward to using it.
Even in 2020 your video is a great help. I bought a SX230 HS on the fleamarket this week for EUR 5. Too bad the wheel is made for dwarfs and not for the average man. My finger keeps pressing the wrong modes : -(
where the button to view the picture you took my batterie charger doent lit both lights, this batterie goes fast i was looking at the mode , can anyone help me
I try to connect to Wifi but it's always "Start dedicated app on target device" and then fail, cannot find the device to connect, pls show me the best way to do this, thanksss 💓💓 your vids r totally detailed
There is no direct way i know of to set the focus area. There nearest you can achieve is to set focus tracking on the subject you want to be in focus and then recompose the shot.
In a way to produce nicely out of focus backgrounds with this camera you have to follow these steps. The camera should be set to full zoom, the aperture set to its widest ( using aperture priority mode AV) get as close to your subject as you can and keep the subject far away from the background. Also try to find a background that is not too busy - plain is best. You will achieve some shallow depth of field with a good amount of background defocus using this method.
Nine years later i learned so much about this camera. It was sitting in my bag for years and i just dicovered what a good camera it is. Thanks to your video’s i use it more now.

How do you charge the battery and what are the ports on the right hand side.??? Thank you for sharing this video!
Tx Graham. It was very helpful for me. didnt know you can rotate the ring around the function setting.
Just bought the latest sx280 hs, most features are still the same, and works exactly like you said. Thanks for this video, very detail and helpful.
Than you, yes i guessed the basics would be the same apart from the wi-fi additions. thanks for letting me know - really appreciated.

Hi Graham: can you use the Canon SX150 to do field of dept shots. I may need to up-grade *Ü*
ot very well, these small sensor cameras have lots of depth of field. the only way to get that look is to use maximum telephoto and get as close to your subject as you can and then keep the subject as far away from the background as you can
Click on the funcset button and you shall see menu on left . Choose 16: 9 and then select 16:9. Apprently you choose photo size as 4:3.
great for 700 series too...thank you better than reading the confusing manual.
Thank you for the explanations. I have a Canon Powershot 210IS.
Very good video. Easy to understand and with great results. Do you also have videos for SX280 HS?
Nothing at the moment, I may consider doing one early in 2014 depending upon finances.
Graham Houghton Thanks Graham. I am really enjoying your videos. Keep up the good work. Best wishes.

I think you have accidentally set the picture format to 4:3 or 3:2. 16:9 will fill the screen for HD viewing
thanks a lot for the video... lot of details
Hi if you go to my channel home page under the playlist for the canon powershot cameras it is the last entry in the list.
