  • Martin Scorsese's new film, his western Killers of the Flower Moon, is based on David Grann's novel of the same name.
    Killers of the Flower Moon stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons and Brendan Fraser, and looks at the 'reign of terror' - in 1920's Oklahoma, the Osage native American tribe begin being killed off one by one.
    The movie has had its world premier at the Cannes film festival, and critics have given their thoughts on the film. It seems most critics consider Killers of the Flower Moon a masterpiece and one of Martin Scorsese's best movies, though a few critics are disappointed in the film.

    We don't know how many more films Scorsese has left in him... I know he's working on Wiseguys but knowing how long it takes this guy to drop a film we'd be lucky if we got 2-3 more films from him. Hoping for this though... Cinema isn't the same without Scorcese.

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this important film. Scorsese spent a great deal of time working with the Osage Nation and descendants of the victims and others to ensure they were portrayed respectfully and correctly. He hired many Osage and Indigenous to work as actors as well as behind the scenes as cultural consultants, carpenters/painters, caterers, costume department, etc. Scorsese and the film are getting rave reviews from the Osage and others who were at Cannes for the premiere as well as those descendants who were intimately involved with the film who can now start sharing some of the background details now that the film as premiered at Cannes. I am really looking forward to seeing this historical film.

    * Let's assume it's a masterpiece now - that would be 3 in a row not counting the David Johansen TV doc - The Irishman, the Dylan Rolling Thunder Revue and now this .....who does that at Scorsese's age?
    * If DiCap wins - that's 2 BA Oscar at under 50 - I've said this before - he could catch DDL w / 3 BA wins. If De Niro wins, certainly the most deserving actor who only has 2 and who deserves 3 and unlike Blanchett he's at the age where it "makes sense"
    * If Gladstone wins .......that's particularly amazing since The Irishman had essentially "no females" (whatever) and be the 2nd Best Actress win he's directed.
    Lots of historical weight to this....... and every review is saying exactly what I want to hear

    • @bolder2009
      @bolder2009 Рік тому

      I haven't watched Rolling Thunder Revue so I can't speak on that but The Irish Man is epic in scope and there's about 45 minutes to an hour of the film that I feel was bordering on greatness. Is it a masterpiece? I'm not decided.

    • @Tusc9969
      @Tusc9969 Рік тому +2

      The very cultural elements on how this story - and through whose POV - is told - are going to be fascinating to watch in its Oscar chances:
      I mean the reviews are awesome imo I'm going to love it I'm sure - but there are big media outlets who are already grumbling about how it's told in their reviews (Variety, LA Times etc). It isn't really how great a movie is - but how great it makes you feel in its components.....
      I mean when you have people saying "it's great - but I could see it performing like GONY or The Irishman" - ie losing every nod - it's kind of depressing ......that hurdle doesn't seem like a big deal in May but the argument against this movie has already been laid out tbh........just wait until we get to the end of year.........ugh

    I think if the focus is Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio and they have the lion share of the film's story, and the trauma and history of the Osage people take the back seat is the reason the story may not have been Scorsese's to tell. Scorsese's was supposed to direct Schindler's List but decided to give it to Spielberg instead. An indigenous filmmaker would've focused on the Osage's people's point of view. It matters who tell stories.

    • @rachelallen5534
      @rachelallen5534 Рік тому

      Truth is, at this point the story wouldn't get the coverage it is getting had it been an Osage director. However, if it had to be a non-Osage, the fact that the tribe and families of the parties involved were intimately involved in all the steps and have been pleased with the outcome say a lot. Also, this is one of the keys recently that is opening the doors for more and more tribes/native actors and other components in the industry to be in the industry.

I got a preview of the film so I Know a bit about the film. Let me be clear, just because Osages are not in the scene half the time, doesn't mean the movie isn''t talking about Osages. Being told the story of the atrocities committed against the Osage Natives by my grandfather when i was young boy it's been a story I've never forgotten and I've told it to so many who had no clue about it and always felt it deserved much more recognition so when the book hit i of course immediately read it and figured the story would finally get out .. the book hasn't seemed to do that as much as i expected but when i found out Scorcese was making an adaptation of it with De Niro and DiCaprio it immediately became one of my most anticipated movies..even at 3h 26m and with 3 legends on board $200 million is steep for the budget but I'm just they made it and to no surprise the reviews are amazing and as much as i love Marvel and the MCU i can't say i don't agree with the old timers and i rather see more original films or films of lesser known events like this one

That said, I'll always give Scorsese the benefit of the doubt and hope the film actually lives up to these early notices. There is no way to cover all of them in one film. A documentary might be able to touch on the multiple families more, but it had to be focused more on a smaller group to tell the story and have it follow a storyline. Even still it's very long. It opens the door for many more projects to highlight the truth and increase awareness. Already, people are more aware of the other books written about the events, and hopefully there will be more.

    This review is the anesthetic of the films misè en scene. In other words the narrator is quick to not comment too much on American covered up history. When this film hits America its not romantic macabre lamentable history that we chalk up to "that's terrible but things are better now" therapy but more intense. When they tie in the other covered up history of the 1921 massacre of black wall street in Tulsa Oklahoma that was based on successful African Americans trying to break into oil bussinress it creates a conspiracy. Then when you realize the blacks killed were actual Creek Nation Freedmen or members of the Creek tribe the hideous nature of oklahoma white people circa 1920s is obvious. But then it gets worse. Those white people who murdered those osage Indians to steal their oil were in fact the big oil names who are billionaires now. Phillips, Sinclair, LaFortune, Sutton, Getty, Marland to name just a few of the 116 people who became overnight millionaires. The very evil that it took to slaughter blacks and Indians cannot go without justice. Especially since SCOTUS gave the Creek Tribe federal status in the McGirt Ruling that is retroactive back to Oklahoma statehood. Oklahoma has to be accountable and so does every single 116 oil tycoons who have lived a life of wealth off the deaths of the innocent. 🤔..

    • @gnostic268
      @gnostic268 Рік тому

      Not everyone who was killed in the Tulsa was a Freedman or member the Creek tribe. Tulsa has always been part of the Creek reservation but the tribe had to go all the way to the Supreme Court to get the McGirt ruling upheld. The Osage murders over oil and headrights has noting to do with the Creeks or anyone else. My mother in-law is Creek and I have many Osage friends in Oklahoma. Don't try to center anything else in this issue.

    • @clydehinman7810
      @clydehinman7810 Рік тому +1

      @@gnostic268 I am not wrong. The freedmen killed in 1921 had just tried to purchase oil shares for themselves. I know that it is a source of shame for Creeks and the other 4 tribes that owned slaves. April 4th of this year I watched as Damario Simmons argued in tribal court to get full benefits for the Creek freedmen. The creeks fought it. I don't care for either. Simmons is a personal injury lawyer who is using the 3 remaining survivors of the massacre as a potential 50% contingency fee windfall. He blew the potential opportunity to start reparation payments the night before the national commemoration would have brought attention to it.
      I stood up at a creek tribal meeting years ago and told the Creeks that they respected their elders like all tribes do. They have the Creek celebration in June, rodeo and stomp dances year around. They teach Creek language at OU and their children learn it as well. Traditions passed down from their elders. They all said "mah-doe" (thank you) and "amen" with a few "ah hoe"s mixed in. Then I said their ancestors welcomed in the black freedmen to protect them from the angry white people who wanted their free labor back. So their ancestors let the freedmen into the tribe and you want to kick them out. You don't honor your ancestors at all. You cherry pick what you want to honor. All because of gaming revenue.....money.
      I may not like either but I hate the white republican people who profited off of both and continues to do so. The white people murdered for profit then threw a bible at us and said "here learn to forgive us".
      Part of forgiveness is seeking accountability.

    • @rachelallen5534
      @rachelallen5534 Рік тому

      The Creeks already had 'federal status', that's not recent. What I think you mean is the tate had to acknowledge their reservation was never dissolved and it's still intact, and all the complexities that is bringing about. Not an insignificant portion of that being how the land has been sold and is checkerboarded, as well as juridictional issues of all sorts.

    • @clydehinman7810
      @clydehinman7810 Рік тому

      @@rachelallen5534 your absolutely wrong. Not only am I a native american from a tribe that was the only tribe to win a case that created the ACLU. I majored in native american history at the Univesity of Oklahoma. The state gave us no federal status because of the discovery of oil and later natural gas. Our land was called "Trust Lands" so that Oklahoma could oversee our tribes land leases. Trust Land means they held our land in trust. The mcgirt ruling dissolved that status and was retroactive to statehood. Now we are federal and our govenor is trying like hell to not acknowledge he has no control over us anymore. We will eventually apply back taxes and loss of 117 years of lost income because SCOTUS ruled that Trust Lands were fraudulent. As soon as I can have the freedmen make peace with the Creeks thev can charge and seek reparations for the 1921 massacre. It's hard as hell to accomplish that but my disdain for the wrongs are my motivation. To strip those rich white men of their ill-gotten oil money. SCOTUS is terrible about a lot of things but won't turn us down. We are not some bullshit woke group for our history is worth killing to protect. The white folks stole land and then threw a bible at us and told us to learn to forgive them. I am working hard to convince hundreds of tribal members to see that hustle. We also have international support which I started during covid when the true racist intent came out in the Southern Baptist leaders. I almost stopped my pursuit but then I realized the evil in the use of their Bible.

    I'm thinking that a big mistake that Scorsese will be shown to have made, is minimizing the role of the FBI in the film. That would have shed some light on how they started and where they have ended up today - possibly, the way they are today is actually similar to how they started, and we were just sold on their righteousness throughout the 20th century.. Taking liberties with the true events, to the point of making up what he thinks will be "sexy" to the audience, is not something to praise, in my opinion.

      What the hell are you talking about? This is a true story. The book is one version of that story. The movie looks at the story in a more realistic light because it cuts away from the F.B.I white savior story and focuses instead onthe core of the story, which is the relationship between the killers and the victims. Instead of a detective story where we already know who the killers are we get to explore the emotions of the people involved. Thats far more intresting, and closer to the true story.
