So, for Twilight specifically choosing the vegetarian option, she's almost certainly seen meat before. Remember, she practically grew up right under Celestia's wing, which probably did include some meetings with foreign dignitaries. _Ponies_ may be herbivorous, but griffons are almost certainly omnivores, and it would not surprise me if the castle chefs know how to prepare meat for omnivorous and/or carnivorous guests.
If any of the ponies ate meat it could be part of Pegasus and Alicorn diets if they needed the extra protein though they probably don’t eat often and twilight and Fluttershy don’t eat it at all
1: Cows give their milk to the ponies in trade for care. For them it's something like when you give plasma and get money for it. 2: Search for faux leather 3: That red stuff is peppers. It has a light side which is the meat of the peppers. 4: You can order one pizza with more than one type of toppings. 5: Hens give their unfertilized eggs to the ponies, like cows their milk. 6: Just for make you uncomfortable, there is a real life video where a horse munch on a chicken. I don't think ponies eat meat. Those pictures can be bad jokes or "just draw a sandwich" and they drew a sandwich... Which usually have meat... But nobody thought someone will have problem with it. :D
Vegetarian is not vegan, so dairy (while odd that it comes from sapient creatures) is not off the table. Sunset shimmer could very well be wearing pleather. And since pinky specifically mentions "Vegetarian" in the song it implies that there are sapient creatures who do in meat in equestria, just not ponies. I imagine hippogriffs at the very least are either carnivorous or omnivorous.
Dragons do eat meat (apart from gems) I think. Because I remember that episode with Applejack going coocoo after not sleeping and they made cupcakes with worms by accident. All ponies went sick but Spike was not only okay after eating one, but he even enjoyed it. So he's either carnivorous or insectivorous
Actually, it's even creepier with respect to griffins. Traditionally, what griffins like to eat above all other this WAS horses, grabbing one of them in each claw (Medieval griffins were described as being a LOT bigger than the ones in MLP, usually about 8x horse size). So, before the peace, it's quite possible griffins actually actively preyed on ponies.

In Equestria, ponies have accepted that they are not the only ones who live in this world and other species of animals could very well be carnivores. Therefore if they’ve seen that other species of animals can eat meat, ponies will be curious as to what they are missing out on, try it, and soon will be slowly accepted that some ponies do eat meat. Although it’s still frowned upon by most ponies.
It's not a matter of knowing there could be carnivores. Fkuttershy fed worms and fish to her animals. A snake even tried to eat another animal when Angel (in Fluttershys body) had to save it. Plus why would Pinkie point out that Buffalo and ponies have something in common by being vegetarian (as opposed to being different by eating something else)?
2:14 I believe Twilight grabbed these specific foods because they are the exact same as what Fluttershy grabbed. I don’t think she knows what she is even grabbing but is just copying what Fluttershy is doing since Flutter is an actual human while Twilight has been a pony her whole life so she doesn’t know what humans are like. Therefore she is just trying to be a normal human by copying Flutter.
The fact that pigs find truffles is a genuine reason for them to be in the show, I mean, they eat eggs, which truffle may be served with, as well as it being a seasonal food, the pigs were probably put in place for world building. Pigs that are trained to find the fugus are incredibly valued, as a pony with access to pigs and the ability to earn money from truffles and truffle boar, it would be a very available option for farmers
@@saribeepo.o5111 I have idea for pigs. They are organic waste disposal. Orchard produces a lot of apples each season. Bad apples and leftovers from cider production need to be dealt with afterwards. It would be possible to compost for fertilizer, but in real life doing so creates a risk of pest infestation and also help diseases spread among the trees. Feeding all that to the pigs to get manure as fertilizer make sense. Or maybe pony raise pigs to sell with to other species.
I have seen an IRL horse just chomp up a baby chicken before, so yeah. They're not supposed to but if a horse is low on a specific vitamin or protein, it'll get it one way or another.
Outside the universe Lauren made them more cat-like compared to the previous generations. Also usually example certain anime style trends and calart styles are popular because animators usually have difficulties on learning the new style. This is in my opinion MLP and Powerpuff girls have so mutch artistic similarities.
Yeah, this configuration is also used by arboreal animals, but, due to the fact most ponies don’t seem to show any arboreal traits, they either descended from an arboreal ancestor, which is unlikely, or they are descended from an animal that was mostly a carnivore.
A good "head cannon" is that ponies won't eat "talking" species... Griffins and hippogriffs very likely are meat (fish) primary. Its more then believable that some horses will eat fish, especially salted fish for its long shelf life in some cases. Griffins, are likely less concerned about eating chicken, pig, or such. Which leads back to the ponies likely getting "stuck" eating meat to if they are in other area's.
Yeah, I feel like they'd be hard pressed to eat talking or otherwise sapient creatures. They'd tend to treat them as people, and eating other people, even non-pony people, would probably be seen as cannibalism and barbaric. And they probably also have a soft spot for their pets, whatever those may be for a particular pony.
couple of things that caught my attention ! :D 1) the cow thing: in the episode "it isnt the mane thing about you", the one where rarity loses her mane, theres a scene where granny can be seen literally milking a cow. so yeah, that is *cannonically a thing* ! :) 2) twilight picking the vegan burger option: she just followed fluttershy's suit imo :D i mean look, you're in a strange new world, ofc you're gonna do what the person infront of you is doing 3) the "pizza's here" thing; there could very well be *multiple* pizzas. it's not like you go "oh, (a specific number of) pizzas are here!" when you order for your friends, right? that'd be dumb lol
1. Twilight probably just chose what fluttershy chose taking her lead as she picked the same burger she did. 2. Consuming milk doesn't necessarily mean you aren't vegetarian. Vegans may not consume it but vegetarians often do. They may just have an agreement with the cows and barter for their milk for making cakes. 3. Eggs are in a similar boat, there are some vegetarians that eat eggs since it's just a chicken's period, you don't need to kill a chicken for it. Not to mention that even 'herbivores' need to consume protein. Nearly every species of herbivore will ingest some form of animal protein, even if left to their own devices. (such as deer eating birds) even horses have been observed eating small rodents from time to time. It is not common but there are things in meat that they need in their diet occasionally. 4. Sunset shimmer is in a human body. So over her time in the human-like world she likely has grown okay with ingesting things her pony self wouldn't. Her body can handle this since she is not a pony there. That being said,s he still likely favors vegetarian options out of habit. Referring to the leather jacket, there is a lot of faux leather options. She also might just, not care. She isn't making the jacket she probably just likes how it looks. She can recognize that horses and cows in that world are not the same as the ones from equestria. 5. when referring to the pizza, those little bits look like diced red pepper or diced tomatos. As for the 'pepperoni' in the pony world, that could still be tomato slices and the animators just didn't detail it since that's a lot of added work. A lot of things in the background are overly simplified. The pizza costume pinkie wore was larger and therefore got more details. 6. The ponies likely don't eat the fish. Fluttershy fed it to the ferrets. Even if the ponies don't regularly consume meat they keep animals that do eat meat such as the ferrets, cats, dogs, ect. Even dragons likely need to eat meat and so they likely have some level of raising meat for that reason, or bartering for meat from other species like gryphons that consume it.
Funnily enough, in old urban legends Unicorns were depicted as strictly carnivorous. Despite having no relevance to the actual show, I like to think that's one of the reasons Unicorns think of themselves as all high and mighty is not because of their more apparent magic, but because they're higher on the food chain. Unicorns are not as magically gifted as people might think though, if anything, pegasi are.
Bicorns, Kelpie and also some stories if Pegasus are also known to be carnivorous. A lot of myths with equestrian type creatures make them have that theme.
They literally are the most magical race. If your basing your opinion on that one horrible video called ''Unicorns arent OP'' then please just think for yourself. All his argument was that not all Unicorns are as gifted as Starlight or Twillight....but that doesnt change the fact that they COULD learn more spells and that manipulating tools, levitating and operating highly mechanical tools by using your horn and lifting them in the air is in intself EXTREMLY op considering all other ponies need to do stuff with their mouths and hooves which puts them at INCREDIBLE disadvantage and no - flying (which everyone can do with the machine that Pinkie was using in the first Gilda episode) or sitting on clouds (literally spel exist for that lol - not to mention LITERAL WING SPELL that Rarity had in S2) is not more magical
@@czerkitka141 Honestly speaking, I have considered for myself. The reason I believe pegasi are arguably more powerful is because of not only the steps it takes to get there, but also in numbers they can do far more damage with weather magic than almost every unicorn in the show (excluding the more prominent ones). Simply putting at "well the unicorns can learn how" is a little obtuse since not every unicorn is going to have the time, energy, or capability to do so. In terms of balance, pegasi appear to be the most well-rounded. Also, the spell with Rarity Twilight mentioned was extremely difficult. Even if she gets better at magic as the show progresses, she was still above average when she tried it. So likely, it'd still be challenging and take focus now. Unicorns can cut corners and do similar things to pegasi, but in the end pegasi are born with these things naturally and do not require any effort. In the argument that unicorns were to be better than pegasi in terms of ability, I still don't think they're overpowered in the slightest due to the amount it takes to master magic.
The leather jacket thing is really a non-issue, since almost anytime you see something made of leather nowadays, it isn't actually leather, it's pleather, or fake leather which is not made from animal skin

Tbh I kinda just explained away ponies owning chickens and pigs with They own carnivorous pets. They own cats and owls n stuff (Also in real life herbivorous animals will actually eat meat on occasion if there’s nutrient deficiencies n stuff. Very few Animals are actually 100% one or the other when it comes to what they eat. Deers have been seen scavenging other deer bodies and horses will eat small animals give the chance it’s insane)
this reminds of a dream i had when i was at the height of my mlp obsession, and the whole premise was that i went to equestria as a human and saw the ponies eating meat and it terrified me for some reason. like it was a genuine nightmare that haunted me the next day lmao im not even vegetarian in the slightest but seeing those ponies consume hamburger meat was harrowing

My solution to the mentions of milk and Sunset’s leather jacket is that ponies use some kind of sou or almond milk, and Sunset’s jacket is made from faux (fake) leather. It’s kind of a logical solution? Right?
@@mag-narwhal but cows only have milk when pregnant like all mammals. I don’t believe that they’d sell the milk that was intended for their babies, that would be weird. It makes more sense if it was plant-based milk because you can easily bake a cake with it and without eggs.

Have ever heard of pump-and-dump it's where your baby isn't drinking as much milk anymore because they're older but they still drink some milk so you have to pump your breast so that they don't stop producing milk and then you just throw away the milk. So theoretically cows could just sell that milk.

I believe that the best way to describe the diet of the Ponies in Equestria is lacto-ovo-vegetarian including fish, at least preferably. As others noted, theres definitely other species in the world beyond Equestria that are more carnivorous or omnivorous, but Ponies naturally stick more to veggies (according to our world at least). As we know, Equestria is built on the tenets on kindness and solidarity between animals sentient or not and the environment. It would make sense that items such as eggs from chickens would not be seen as taboo, especially since the ponies house and feed them, even if they're suck up in a coop. While getting milk from sentient cows is much more strange, its already weird that we as humans do it, last time I checked we aren't baby cows. As for fish, I guess they kinda got the short end of the stick when it comes to being seen as ok to eat. While Fluttershy is loving of all animals, I think that her understanding of nature allows her to accept that all animals are different, with some eating others, so procuring fish in an ethical way to feed her other animal friends is the natural way of the world. I guess that could go for the chicken we see in the comic, maybe at the end of a chicken's life some ponies decide to eat them. It's strange how the world of MLP has seemingly sentient animals akin to humans, and non-sentient or "wild" life more like the animals of our world, but I suppose that naturally makes sure that carnivores dont feel too bad eating a fish or a chicken. Though Angel and Fluttershy's other animal friends do have more awareness and personally than animals of our world....(ahhh so many contradictions!!) Also Sunset Simmer's probably got a faux leather coat, that would explain the whole mare in a human world wearing animals away. Plus Sunset's a high school student and ain't now way she's dishing out hundreds of $$$ for real leather for every wardrobe swap😂 Man... now you got me thinking about the diets of Ponies way too much, lol. About the milking thing, if you remember in It Isn't The Mane Thing About You, we see Granny going through the motions of milking a cow, and no one treats this as odd. So they definitely drink cows milk.(Its probably like Thems' Fight'n Herds where the cows purposely sell their milk.)
I think they eat animals like fish, pigs, and chicken because they don't really have the same sentence as the other animals... Not only that, horses irl are known to eat these animals as well. Even in colder climates, people feed horses fish... So yeah I think it might be depending on the pony. Maybe it's a a special occasion thing
You know, this is a good to you about the strangest thing that I ever drank: it was an alcoholic beverage called kumis, which from what I understand is a traditional drink in the Central Asian steppe. It had a kinda foamy, sour taste, which I wasn’t a fan of but hey I tried it. Only later did I learn what I actually drank was fermented milk, or more specifically, fermented mare’s milk. So I guess I lived the plot of a crack clop fic.
Pigs are also used as biological trash compactors due being omnivores. So the Apple family keeps pigs to feed them all leftovers from cooking and expired food.
Also worth noting: in Hearts and Hooves Day, when the CMC are making the "Valentine" for Cheerilee, they're using glue. GLUE. That thing we make from HORSES. Sure, modern glue doesn't use animal parts (typical school glue for that matter, it still exists though, mostly for bookbinding) but considering technology is kinda all over the place in terms of progress in Equestria I don't think it's out of the question. Conclusion: old/dying ponies are used to produce meat and glue in the pony world
Glue can be made from plants, using starch from corn, wheat and potatoes, presumably that's what the CMC are using. Additionally, in modern times, most glue is made using synthetic compounds, like ethyl cyanoacrylate, no animal collagen needed, actual "animal glue" is a pretty niche product nowadays.
4:53 I am vegetarian and my friends have gotten pizza many times. They often want pepperoni pizza, so when I get a slice I just take the pepperoni slices off. This may be what Twilight and/or Fluttershy did.
Other points (I have thought a LOT about this issue) 1. Other uses for the pigs could also be waste disposal (pigs are good at eating organic garbage) and their bristles, which could be used in bushes (since basically everypony has a mane and a tail, good stiff currying brushes would be a desirable commodity.) 2. The gravy at Discord's party with Fluttershy. While there IS such a thing as vegetarian gravy, it's something you work out how to make AFTER finding the meat one. Unless it's adapted from a recipe from a meat eating culture (like the Griffins, presumably.) one wonders how they came up with it. 3. Twilight says she writes on parchment, not paper. Parchment is animal skin. 4. We know the Ponies eat cheese, and to make cheese, you need something called rennet to make the milk coagulate (curdle). Rennet comes from the stomach linings of juvenile animals, like calves and lambs. Again there IS a vegetable source for rennet (the juice of something called a cardoon, which is sort of like a thin pickily artichoke.) as well as microbial rennet. But again, those were discovered MUCH later. 5. There are a few pieces of clothing we have seen in Equestria that look like they either have to be actual leather or plastic (which we aren't sure ponies have, remember Vinyl Scratch is a FAN MADE name, not an official one.) Applejack's Grand Gala boots, for example (actually, in the case of Equestria Girls, MOST of their shoes are probably also leather. Again, Applejack's boots certainly LOOK like leather.)
I think the reason ponies do a lot of things humans do is because humans at one point did exist in this universe, it explains why saddles exist, how they know what guns and cannons are, they have rodeos where one of the games are bucking off a "rider" and find it offensive if they get treat like actual horses
@@beansquad-ally3197 No need for humans, there are multiple humanoid species in the MLPFIM universe, like diamond dogs, cat people, minotaurs, and dragons. In fact, the diamond dogs in A Dog And Pony show treat ponies like horses, they have Rarity pull their cart as a beast of burden and attempt to ride the rest of the mane six.
I find it funny that the ponies in MLP are omnivores (or at least, they are due to inconsistency with writing and art, stuff being done without remembering that THEY ARE HORSES), while in real life, horses are supposedly amongst animals that are exclusively herbivorous.
Not entirely true! Most herbivores aren't real herbivores anyway. They're opportunistic omnivores! Horses very commonly eat mice and other small rodents when they're able to catch one.
The ponies in Mlp should be omnivores than vegetarian or vegan. Because MLP:Fim was a Fable (Fable is a story about the animals are anthropomorphised) expect Equestria Girls.

Yet even funnier enough, we never see a pony eating a mouse in the show. Sure, it'd be dark without it being subtle (like the exceptions that led to this analysis in the first place), but it'd be more realistic than them drinking or using cow milk, eating or using chicken eggs, and/or the potential oversight with the ham and cooked chicken.

@@SmokeTheHorsehog I think most people are unaware that a ton of hooved animals *are* opportunistic omnivores/not full herbivores, so ig it'd seem too morbid and, of course, be unsettling to children who're watching. If meat was a rare thing to see in Equestria before Twilight was crowned then it was absolutely common and normal by the time of Luster Dawn. Some ponies may eat meat as an exotic dish or when non-pony species visit or trade as food for money. The next question would be which out of the exotic or hybrid pony species are capable of eating meat, besides gryphons. As for Equestria girls, following the old saying, 'When in Rome'. Plus I think Twilight was just coping Fluttershy to a T, Flutters picked the veggie burger on purpose, Twi just got lucky by imitating. One more bit to add, I remember when someone else brought up the meat question when Discord served gravy at a party at Fluttershy's house and fans were questioning if the gravy was meat-based or not. Do ponies eat meat? Possibly. Do ponies have PONY butchers for cows, sheep, pigs, ect. Most likely, especially by Luster's time.
Horses are opportunistic carnivores. A common misconception is that all animals we label as herbivore strictly eat plants. This is not true. Certain animals like turtles will develop horrible bone growths if they consume meat, but most mammals don't. Squirrels commit cannibalism all the time. Horses dig through trash at rodeos and races and specifically search out burgers and hotdogs to eat. Horses need salt and protein, so in colder countries where processed grain isn't an option, salted herrings are spread throughout the hay fed to horses to keep them nourished. Horses will GOBBLE UP LITTLE CHICKS if they're feeling hungry. Making Equestrians vegetarian was a cute and creative way to make the world distinct, because most kids are taught that horses don't eat meat. But just because human beings group animals with other plant-eating animals doesn't mean they cannot or will not eat meat.

They eat milk and eggs bc they all like it they’re vegetarians!! Pinkie works in a bakery so it’s completely accepted. And the “pepperoni” on the pizza was cut up peppers! Also, a Turkey or whatever sitting on the table in that scene where celestia is there means that there may be other species there who will need to eat that.
This was always confusing me in the show where I wonder did the ponies ever eat meat during an episode or scene but ponies are horses which horses are farm animals, which means a farm animal is eating another farm animal(I know horses eat fruit or veggies) 1:21 this part is funny, they make it out of water

And this is what google had to say: Whilst horses may be prepared to eat meat and some might even appear to enjoy it, there is no evidence that meat should feature in their diet. Some horses might steal a bit of your hot dog and that probably won't do them any harm. However, horses shouldn't really be encouraged to eat meat as it could cause them harm.
there is a small difference between vegetarian and vegan, "The main difference between vegans and vegetarians is that vegans do not consume anything that has animal origin, either in their food or other products, such as articles for hygiene, cleaning, clothing or medicine. vegetarian does not eat meat, fish and poultry, but consumes other animal products." considering that a world of magic, it is quite possible for them to make alternative versions for food (like the beastboy from teen titans who uses a lot of soy in his food instead of meat), or replace meat with soy meat, milk with almond milk, etc. just closing that, they are vegetarians, they can eat animal derivatives, but not meat, but that if it's someone's fault for the chicken and the ham..it's Pinkie and Applejack's fault, for sure
I often think about this when I was making my old Fallout Equestria comic. I exclusively had the characters eat foods from the Fallout universe, such as iguana bits & strange meat pies. I did not consider the implications until much later… 😅

We clearly see cows being milked in the first episode Trixie appears, and we can hear Pinkie tell a cow that "there are fresh cookies in Sugarcube Corner that will go really well with your milk". Idk the episode to this one

Also, the other EG main six weren't eating meat burgers that time you mentioned at 4:44 , they call them 'oat burgers' and oats are a grain plant commonly used to feed horses in real life As for Fluttershy feeding fish to the otters, she has so many different animals that she must feed some of them meat since a lot of animals need meat in their diets, even if the ponies don't eat it

To answer the milk question: Vegan milk exists. It could've easily just been almond milk or oat milk or soy milk As for the cow swimming in the milk during Discord's song, well It's Discord xD He may very well drink cow's milk instead of almond/ oat/ soy milk
"Vegetarian" means they don't eat meat. Simply by using this word, they already implied that there are others who do eat meat. There are many other species and mythical creatures in Equestria and beyond, so I'm sure the ponies at least know of the concept. Although if cows are being killed for their meat, despite being intelligent enough that you could have a conversation with them, that's still weird to me, and I doubt the ponies would like it.
I usually assume in this kind of anthropomorphic universes where milk is consumed and the cows are sentient, that the cows would actually milk themselves willingly, just as some mothers pump their brest milk and them give them to other mothers that for whatever reason can't produce their own, since cows would know that they can provide such an important and healthy ingredient, they would sell it or gift it much like some form of blood donation seen fact on this universes, ever since i was a child i thought about this and the same for eggs in universes where chickens are sentient and i kinda thought it was dead obvious ಠ_ಠ
The most likely answer for why they keep meat around and produce animal products is and/or for other species. Such as dragons, griffons, hippogriffs and so on. As the series further progresses and we get into later seasons, such as when the School of Friendship is introduced. They'd have to provide meals for students and teachers who aren't ponies themselves. In conclusion, yes, they do make and create meat products but not for themselves exactly. There are also vegetarian substitutions for foods like cake that remove animal products and replace them with something else. The liquid from chickpea cans mimics the feeling and texture of eggs when whipped. Oat and soy milk are good replacements for standard milk.
You can get vegan or vegetarian meat and even fake leather, I think the chicken in the background on the table could've just been in case other creatures came to the party/event that eat meat. On the pizza it coudve been peppers, Because they can be cut up finally. I think the ponies are vegetarian, But not vegan since they eat eggs and have milk. You can get vegetarian susui too.
For milk: we drink human milk, cow milk, and goat milk, and I'm just going to assume that cows will give up or sell there own milk in MLP For leather: ...fake leather or when she came to the human world she just didn't care because those cows because they don't talk. My guess is they still use cows milk in the form of a trade for a service. Cows irl need to be milked so I assume it's the same situation where the ponies helped milk them and they needed something to do with all of it. Same with the eggs. Also those speckles are not meat they're peppers. As for Sunset since she's staying in the human world, she doesn't have to stick to a herbivore diet, so she probably switched or tried meat at least. Also leather jackets can be made of faux leather.
in nature, very few animals are exclusively carnivores or herbivores. Sure, animals like wolves primarily hunt, but they'll eat fruit if they find it on the ground and they're hungry enough. Horses and cows are specifically known to eat baby birds and eggs out of nests. Those animals don't hunt, but they do need the occasional protien and calcium. Most animals, including herbivores, eat their own young if they're stressed enough.
i could see ponies using and eating dairy items like eggs and milk which they get from chicken and cows, its like sort of a beastars situation, not necessarily weird to eat something made from a sentient creature if it doesnt harm them, if anything its probably more humane that way since they can give their milk on their terms and clearly have a positive relationship with the ponies also pretty sure fish are non sentient in mlp but i dont think theyre supposed to want to eat them
Why bother going all the way to Season 4 for confirmation that ponies milk cows when Twilight milks the whole herd in episode 6 of the show to feed the baby Ursa. As for how milk is acquired by the ponies, there is a possible answer that doesn't lower the status of cows to below that of the ponies in Equestrian society. Maybe they sell their milk.

The concept of butchery must not be lost on the ponies, even if they themselves abstain from it, but it does make you wonder where the meat comes from if seemingly all hooved beings are sapient. I guess everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others. 😬
So, for Twilight specifically choosing the vegetarian option, she's almost certainly seen meat before. Remember, she practically grew up right under Celestia's wing, which probably did include some meetings with foreign dignitaries. _Ponies_ may be herbivorous, but griffons are almost certainly omnivores, and it would not surprise me if the castle chefs know how to prepare meat for omnivorous and/or carnivorous guests.

Vegetarian is not vegan, so dairy (while odd that it comes from sapient creatures) is not off the table. Sunset shimmer could very well be wearing pleather. And since pinky specifically mentions "Vegetarian" in the song it implies that there are sapient creatures who do in meat in equestria, just not ponies. I imagine hippogriffs at the very least are either carnivorous or omnivorous.

Actually, it's even creepier with respect to griffins. Traditionally, what griffins like to eat above all other this WAS horses, grabbing one of them in each claw (Medieval griffins were described as being a LOT bigger than the ones in MLP, usually about 8x horse size). So, before the peace, it's quite possible griffins actually actively preyed on ponies.

In Equestria, ponies have accepted that they are not the only ones who live in this world and other species of animals could very well be carnivores. Therefore if they’ve seen that other species of animals can eat meat, ponies will be curious as to what they are missing out on, try it, and soon will be slowly accepted that some ponies do eat meat. Although it’s still frowned upon by most ponies.
It's not a matter of knowing there could be carnivores. Fkuttershy fed worms and fish to her animals. A snake even tried to eat another animal when Angel (in Fluttershys body) had to save it.
Plus why would Pinkie point out that Buffalo and ponies have something in common by being vegetarian (as opposed to being different by eating something else)?

The fact that pigs find truffles is a genuine reason for them to be in the show, I mean, they eat eggs, which truffle may be served with, as well as it being a seasonal food, the pigs were probably put in place for world building.
Pigs that are trained to find the fugus are incredibly valued, as a pony with access to pigs and the ability to earn money from truffles and truffle boar, it would be a very available option for farmers

@@saribeepo.o5111 I have idea for pigs. They are organic waste disposal. Orchard produces a lot of apples each season. Bad apples and leftovers from cider production need to be dealt with afterwards. It would be possible to compost for fertilizer, but in real life doing so creates a risk of pest infestation and also help diseases spread among the trees. Feeding all that to the pigs to get manure as fertilizer make sense. Or maybe pony raise pigs to sell with to other species.
I have seen an IRL horse just chomp up a baby chicken before, so yeah. They're not supposed to but if a horse is low on a specific vitamin or protein, it'll get it one way or another.

Also usually example certain anime style trends and calart styles are popular because animators usually have difficulties on learning the new style. A good "head cannon" is that ponies won't eat "talking" species... Griffins and hippogriffs very likely are meat (fish) primary. Its more then believable that some horses will eat fish, especially salted fish for its long shelf life in some cases.
Griffins, are likely less concerned about eating chicken, pig, or such. Which leads back to the ponies likely getting "stuck" eating meat to if they are in other area's.
Yeah, I feel like they'd be hard pressed to eat talking or otherwise sapient creatures. They'd tend to treat them as people, and eating other people, even non-pony people, would probably be seen as cannibalism and barbaric. And they probably also have a soft spot for their pets, whatever those may be for a particular pony.

1) the cow thing: in the episode "it isnt the mane thing about you", the one where rarity loses her mane, theres a scene where granny can be seen literally milking a cow. so yeah, that is *cannonically a thing* ! :)

3) the "pizza's here" thing; there could very well be *multiple* pizzas. it's not like you go "oh, (a specific number of) pizzas are here!" when you order for your friends, right? that'd be dumb lol
1. Twilight probably just chose what fluttershy chose taking her lead as she picked the same burger she did.
2. Consuming milk doesn't necessarily mean you aren't vegetarian. Vegans may not consume it but vegetarians often do. They may just have an agreement with the cows and barter for their milk for making cakes.
3. Eggs are in a similar boat, there are some vegetarians that eat eggs since it's just a chicken's period, you don't need to kill a chicken for it. Not to mention that even 'herbivores' need to consume protein. Nearly every species of herbivore will ingest some form of animal protein, even if left to their own devices. (such as deer eating birds) even horses have been observed eating small rodents from time to time. It is not common but there are things in meat that they need in their diet occasionally.
4. Sunset shimmer is in a human body. So over her time in the human-like world she likely has grown okay with ingesting things her pony self wouldn't. Her body can handle this since she is not a pony there. That being said,s he still likely favors vegetarian options out of habit. Referring to the leather jacket, there is a lot of faux leather options. She also might just, not care. She isn't making the jacket she probably just likes how it looks. She can recognize that horses and cows in that world are not the same as the ones from equestria.
5. when referring to the pizza, those little bits look like diced red pepper or diced tomatos. As for the 'pepperoni' in the pony world, that could still be tomato slices and the animators just didn't detail it since that's a lot of added work. A lot of things in the background are overly simplified. The pizza costume pinkie wore was larger and therefore got more details.
6. The ponies likely don't eat the fish. Fluttershy fed it to the ferrets. Even if the ponies don't regularly consume meat they keep animals that do eat meat such as the ferrets, cats, dogs, ect. Even dragons likely need to eat meat and so they likely have some level of raising meat for that reason, or bartering for meat from other species like gryphons that consume it.
Funnily enough, in old urban legends Unicorns were depicted as strictly carnivorous. Despite having no relevance to the actual show, I like to think that's one of the reasons Unicorns think of themselves as all high and mighty is not because of their more apparent magic, but because they're higher on the food chain. Unicorns are not as magically gifted as people might think though, if anything, pegasi are.
Bicorns, Kelpie and also some stories if Pegasus are also known to be carnivorous. A lot of myths with equestrian type creatures make them have that theme.

The reason I believe pegasi are arguably more powerful is because of not only the steps it takes to get there, but also in numbers they can do far more damage with weather magic than almost every unicorn in the show (excluding the more prominent ones). Simply putting at "well the unicorns can learn how" is a little obtuse since not every unicorn is going to have the time, energy, or capability to do so. In terms of balance, pegasi appear to be the most well-rounded. Also, the spell with Rarity Twilight mentioned was extremely difficult. Even if she gets better at magic as the show progresses, she was still above average when she tried it. So likely, it'd still be challenging and take focus now. Unicorns can cut corners and do similar things to pegasi, but in the end pegasi are born with these things naturally and do not require any effort. In the argument that unicorns were to be better than pegasi in terms of ability, I still don't think they're overpowered in the slightest due to the amount it takes to master magic.
The leather jacket thing is really a non-issue, since almost anytime you see something made of leather nowadays, it isn't actually leather, it's pleather, or fake leather which is not made from animal skin

My solution to the mentions of milk and Sunset’s leather jacket is that ponies use some kind of sou or almond milk, and Sunset’s jacket is made from faux (fake) leather. It’s kind of a logical solution? Right?

Have ever heard of pump-and-dump it's where your baby isn't drinking as much milk anymore because they're older but they still drink some milk so you have to pump your breast so that they don't stop producing milk and then you just throw away the milk. So theoretically cows could just sell that milk.

I believe that the best way to describe the diet of the Ponies in Equestria is lacto-ovo-vegetarian including fish, at least preferably. As others noted, theres definitely other species in the world beyond Equestria that are more carnivorous or omnivorous, but Ponies naturally stick more to veggies (according to our world at least). As we know, Equestria is built on the tenets on kindness and solidarity between animals sentient or not and the environment. It would make sense that items such as eggs from chickens would not be seen as taboo, especially since the ponies house and feed them, even if they're suck up in a coop. While getting milk from sentient cows is much more strange, its already weird that we as humans do it, last time I checked we aren't baby cows.
As for fish, I guess they kinda got the short end of the stick when it comes to being seen as ok to eat. While Fluttershy is loving of all animals, I think that her understanding of nature allows her to accept that all animals are different, with some eating others, so procuring fish in an ethical way to feed her other animal friends is the natural way of the world. I guess that could go for the chicken we see in the comic, maybe at the end of a chicken's life some ponies decide to eat them. It's strange how the world of MLP has seemingly sentient animals akin to humans, and non-sentient or "wild" life more like the animals of our world, but I suppose that naturally makes sure that carnivores dont feel too bad eating a fish or a chicken. Though Angel and Fluttershy's other animal friends do have more awareness and personally than animals of our world....(ahhh so many contradictions!!)
Also Sunset Simmer's probably got a faux leather coat, that would explain the whole mare in a human world wearing animals away. Plus Sunset's a high school student and ain't now way she's dishing out hundreds of $$$ for real leather for every wardrobe swap😂

You know, this is a good to you about the strangest thing that I ever drank: it was an alcoholic beverage called kumis, which from what I understand is a traditional drink in the Central Asian steppe. It had a kinda foamy, sour taste, which I wasn’t a fan of but hey I tried it.
Only later did I learn what I actually drank was fermented milk, or more specifically, fermented mare’s milk.

Glue can be made from plants, using starch from corn, wheat and potatoes, presumably that's what the CMC are using.
Additionally, in modern times, most glue is made using synthetic compounds, like ethyl cyanoacrylate, no animal collagen needed, actual "animal glue" is a pretty niche product nowadays.
4:53 I am vegetarian and my friends have gotten pizza many times. They often want pepperoni pizza, so when I get a slice I just take the pepperoni slices off. This may be what Twilight and/or Fluttershy did.
Other points (I have thought a LOT about this issue)
1. Other uses for the pigs could also be waste disposal (pigs are good at eating organic garbage) and their bristles, which could be used in bushes (since basically everypony has a mane and a tail, good stiff currying brushes would be a desirable commodity.)
2. The gravy at Discord's party with Fluttershy. While there IS such a thing as vegetarian gravy, it's something you work out how to make AFTER finding the meat one. Unless it's adapted from a recipe from a meat eating culture (like the Griffins, presumably.) one wonders how they came up with it.
3. Twilight says she writes on parchment, not paper. Parchment is animal skin.
4. We know the Ponies eat cheese, and to make cheese, you need something called rennet to make the milk coagulate (curdle). Rennet comes from the stomach linings of juvenile animals, like calves and lambs. Again there IS a vegetable source for rennet (the juice of something called a cardoon, which is sort of like a thin pickily artichoke.) as well as microbial rennet. But again, those were discovered MUCH later.
5. There are a few pieces of clothing we have seen in Equestria that look like they either have to be actual leather or plastic (which we aren't sure ponies have, remember Vinyl Scratch is a FAN MADE name, not an official one.) Applejack's Grand Gala boots, for example (actually, in the case of Equestria Girls, MOST of their shoes are probably also leather. Again, Applejack's boots certainly LOOK like leather.)
I think the reason ponies do a lot of things humans do is because humans at one point did exist in this universe, it explains why saddles exist, how they know what guns and cannons are, they have rodeos where one of the games are bucking off a "rider" and find it offensive if they get treat like actual horses

I find it funny that the ponies in MLP are omnivores (or at least, they are due to inconsistency with writing and art, stuff being done without remembering that THEY ARE HORSES), while in real life, horses are supposedly amongst animals that are exclusively herbivorous.

Most herbivores aren't real herbivores anyway. They're opportunistic omnivores! Horses very commonly eat mice and other small rodents when they're able to catch one.
The ponies in Mlp should be omnivores than vegetarian or vegan. Because MLP:Fim was a Fable (Fable is a story about the animals are anthropomorphised) expect Equestria Girls.

@@SmokeTheHorsehog I think most people are unaware that a ton of hooved animals *are* opportunistic omnivores/not full herbivores, so ig it'd seem too morbid and, of course, be unsettling to children who're watching. If meat was a rare thing to see in Equestria before Twilight was crowned then it was absolutely common and normal by the time of Luster Dawn. Some ponies may eat meat as an exotic dish or when non-pony species visit or trade as food for money. The next question would be which out of the exotic or hybrid pony species are capable of eating meat, besides gryphons. As for Equestria girls, following the old saying, 'When in Rome'. Plus I think Twilight was just coping Fluttershy to a T, Flutters picked the veggie burger on purpose, Twi just got lucky by imitating. One more bit to add, I remember when someone else brought up the meat question when Discord served gravy at a party at Fluttershy's house and fans were questioning if the gravy was meat-based or not. Do ponies eat meat? Possibly. Do ponies have PONY butchers for cows, sheep, pigs, ect. Most likely, especially by Luster's time.
Horses are opportunistic carnivores.
A common misconception is that all animals we label as herbivore strictly eat plants. This is not true. Certain animals like turtles will develop horrible bone growths if they consume meat, but most mammals don't. Squirrels commit cannibalism all the time. Horses dig through trash at rodeos and races and specifically search out burgers and hotdogs to eat.
Horses need salt and protein, so in colder countries where processed grain isn't an option, salted herrings are spread throughout the hay fed to horses to keep them nourished.

Making Equestrians vegetarian was a cute and creative way to make the world distinct, because most kids are taught that horses don't eat meat. But just because human beings group animals with other plant-eating animals doesn't mean they cannot or will not eat meat.

Also, a Turkey or whatever sitting on the table in that scene where celestia is there means that there may be other species there who will need to eat that.

considering that a world of magic, it is quite possible for them to make alternative versions for food (like the beastboy from teen titans who uses a lot of soy in his food instead of meat), or replace meat with soy meat, milk with almond milk, etc.
just closing that, they are vegetarians, they can eat animal derivatives, but not meat, but that if it's someone's fault for the chicken and the ham..it's Pinkie and Applejack's fault, for sure

"Vegetarian" means they don't eat meat. Simply by using this word, they already implied that there are others who do eat meat. There are many other species and mythical creatures in Equestria and beyond, so I'm sure the ponies at least know of the concept. I usually assume in this kind of anthropomorphic universes where milk is consumed and the cows are sentient, that the cows would actually milk themselves willingly, just as some mothers pump their brest milk and them give them to other mothers that for whatever reason can't produce their own, since cows would know that they can provide such an important and healthy ingredient, they would sell it or gift it much like some form of blood donation seen fact on this universes, ever since i was a child i thought about this and the same for eggs in universes where chickens are sentient and i kinda thought it was dead obvious ಠ_ಠ
The most likely answer for why they keep meat around and produce animal products is and/or for other species. Such as dragons, griffons, hippogriffs and so on. As the series further progresses and we get into later seasons, such as when the School of Friendship is introduced. They'd have to provide meals for students and teachers who aren't ponies themselves. In conclusion, yes, they do make and create meat products but not for themselves exactly. There are also vegetarian substitutions for foods like cake that remove animal products and replace them with something else. The liquid from chickpea cans mimics the feeling and texture of eggs when whipped. Oat and soy milk are good replacements for standard milk.
You can get vegan or vegetarian meat and even fake leather, I think the chicken in the background on the table could've just been in case other creatures came to the party/event that eat meat. On the pizza it coudve been peppers, Because they can be cut up finally. I think the ponies are vegetarian, But not vegan since they eat eggs and have milk. You can get vegetarian susui too.
For milk: we drink human milk, cow milk, and goat milk, and I'm just going to assume that cows will give up or sell there own milk in MLP
For leather: ...fake leather or when she came to the human world she just didn't care because those cows because they don't talk.

My guess is they still use cows milk in the form of a trade for a service. Cows irl need to be milked so I assume it's the same situation where the ponies helped milk them and they needed something to do with all of it. Same with the eggs. Also those speckles are not meat they're peppers. As for Sunset since she's staying in the human world, she doesn't have to stick to a herbivore diet, so she probably switched or tried meat at least. Also leather jackets can be made of faux leather.

in nature, very few animals are exclusively carnivores or herbivores. Sure, animals like wolves primarily hunt, but they'll eat fruit if they find it on the ground and they're hungry enough. Horses and cows are specifically known to eat baby birds and eggs out of nests. Those animals don't hunt, but they do need the occasional protien and calcium. Most animals, including herbivores, eat their own young if they're stressed enough.

i could see ponies using and eating dairy items like eggs and milk which they get from chicken and cows, its like sort of a beastars situation, not necessarily weird to eat something made from a sentient creature if it doesnt harm them, if anything its probably more humane that way since they can give their milk on their terms and clearly have a positive relationship with the ponies

Why bother going all the way to Season 4 for confirmation that ponies milk cows when Twilight milks the whole herd in episode 6 of the show to feed the baby Ursa. As for how milk is acquired by the ponies, there is a possible answer that doesn't lower the status of cows to below that of the ponies in Equestrian society. Maybe they sell their milk.
