Thanks for this lesson. What is it with good bass teachers from the UK? Most of the best bass teachers on youtube are from the UK.

i do like very much your playing of scales over two octaves (three on my 5 string jazz bass) through the circle of 4ths. An approach i have never considered before. A very thorough workout and highly beneficial for fretboard knowledge and fretting hand dexterity

Just learning this. What time and effort is needed to be so proficient playing scales? Nice Marcus Miller bass.

Personally I utilise the circle of 4ths when practising anything in the major key or jazz compositions and i reserve the circle of 5ths for minor key harmonisation and composition. Not a hard and fast rule set in stone naturally as we all approach musical theory in our own way but i found it has become habitual, easier and more to my natural musical orientation to practise (and teach) using the circle of 4ths although i never disregard the 5ths (which leaves me engaging the brain and neural pathways a lot more than i would like. Another great tutorial

Mix with a LEADING TONE = Circle of 5th
All the circle of 5th dose is help piano player play the major scale in 12 different pitch.
The C Major scale has the same intervals as the Ab Major scale...it's just in a different pitch.
    You're on a FRET BOARD..not a piano.
You can use the fretboard like a SLIDE RULER to play in different PITCH, EASY.
You need to do on a fretboard is learn INTERVALS
    Here are the other scale.
aeo with a leading tone = Harmonic min
dor with a leading tone = melodic min ( or Ion b3)
    phrygian with a leading tone = harmonic min b2 ( aka N6)
loc with a leading tone = Mix #2
    Mix b6 with a leading tone= Harmonic MAJOR ( or Ion b6)
    dor b2 ,maj7 = melodic min b2 ( aka N6)
dor #4 , Maj7= melodic min #4 Lydian b3 or IV of Harmonic MAJOR
    dor b5, Maj7 = Melodic min b5
    aeo b2 maj7 = Harmonic min b2
aeo b5 maj7 = Harmonic min b5 or III of Hungarian MAJOR
aeo #4 Maj7 = Harmonic min #4 or aka Hungarian Minor
    example...From C Major/A min
if you apply the (N6) A harmonic min b2 or Melodic min b2
That would be the Bb note ( you could stack it as Bb maj7, Bb7, Bb dim. Bb augmented
    Bb lydian ( maj7) to F MAJOR/D min
Bb ion ( maj7) to Bb MAJOR /G min
    Bb7 ( dominant) to Eb MAJOR/ Cmin
Notice it's cycling down to the 4th
or can play Bb dim/aug into B min/D MAJOR
or Bb augmented to G harmonic /melodic min ..ect ( G minor)
You could apply the N6 after the C MAJOR tonic
    Db dim into D min
or you could simply play D dorian with a Leading tone
    A min B dim C# dim into D min ( melodic min)
or A min Bb dim C# dim into D min ( D harmonic min)
    or Bb7 , C7 into F Melodic min....F min/Ab MAJOR
To circle up to the 5th
You could apply A melodic min #4 or A Harmonic #4
    D# into E
    B7 into E min
It dosnt mater..you can play B7 into E MAJOR or E min.
    Once in E minor/G MAJOR.
    E phrygian Maj7 ( Harmonic min b2)
    the F maj7 chord....CYCLE down to the 4th
or if you use the A melodic min b2
    That would be F# aeo b4, b5
    You could play F#7 into B min...You circle UP...UP...UP
once in B min, to cycle back down = B Harmonic min b2...
    whalla C Maj7 /A min
    or C7 into F MAJOR
    or C Maj7 ( lydian) to G MAJOR/Emin
    or C dim into C# min/E MAJOR
So lets step back to the 5th ( V) chord degree.
    G7 into C MAJOR or C min
    E7 into A MAJOR or A min
It's harder to do it on a Piano to shift to multiple keys, Back and forth.
It's EASY on the FRETBOARD. Use it to your advantage.
