  • The circle of fifths is super helpful for writing chord progressions. But the it can also seem complicated with all of its symbols. So here, we'll dissect the circle of fifths diagram so you can navigate it more easily.

    It's the Fibonacci principle! Very nice explanation.

    I am familiar with the circle of fifths, this is the best explanation of modes and the circle of fifths, but especially the modes.

    Thank you so much for the explanation. The idea of colorizing the chords is just terrific. You also made me realize that the circle of fifths could apply to the modes. Well donné !

    Mike, I can't thank you enough. I've struggled with the circle of fifths for some time now. In watching your videos, the fog has been cleared. I've watched so many videos on the circle of fifths, but just didn't get it, there was always something that went over my head -- trust me that isn't hard to do, but you succeeded at keeping everything in my limited understanding. 🤣 Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    Glad I found you. This is the info I have been looking for. I have been reading theory books but it has helped in some ways. It’s not what I have been looking for. This makes sense to me. I’m trying to Learn to Play lead. I want to know where all the sweet notes are and why they are what they are. I think this will help me a lot. Thank you for the videos

    Im intrigued in the use of the circle of fifths with the melodic minor (and the important modes like lidya b7), tritonal substitution and that kind of jazzy stuff. Thanks.

    I started using color similarly a few years ago. The problem is: color blindness. Among biologic males, color blindness runs about 7%, plus or minus a percent or two. That's one guy out of 14. Among biologic females, the rate is much lower: 1% or less. Together, its prevalence is around one in 27. That's one person per American grade school class, more or less. One per choir. Point is, it's common.

    Great video, with lots of useful illustrations and it gave me some more basics to the modes (I haven't really looked at them yet).
    What's interesting to me are augmented chords: They are not in those 3 wheels as you can't build an augmented triad from the notes of one scale, but on the other hand they are kind of similar to diminished chords. It would be great to hear something about this.

      I'll definitely be posting more about augmented chords. Thanks for your feedback!

    Couldn't hear anything until I go that light out of the way. Why it's there. Finally figured it's a camere light metering trick... for the skin tone. Now, back to spirals.

    So much good stuff here. I keep sensing a relationship between the Circle of Fifths and the Fibonacci Sequence (or golden ratio as used in art and architecture.) I still can’t find the exact correlation but I know it’s there. The explanation of the spirals gives another clue. I’m an Architect and Musician. I saw one other comment re: Fibonacci. Anyone else have any insight? Great video Mike!

      I don't think there's any connection.
      The Fibonacci sequence is just an example of exponential growth.
      Any Fibonacci number divided by the one previous to it approximately equals the Golden Ratio Phi (1.618...)
      That approximation gets more accurate with larger Fibonacci numbers.
      About the only connection to music is each tone is ¹²√2 (1.059463...) times the frequency of the semitone below it.
      Frequencies doubling every octave is also exponential growth.

    This is great work, even though I am colour blind and those lines could have been written in Greek. I understand the concept even though I'm a Piano Nooby, I've touched a little bit on modes.
    I started studying the piano after my retirement. I used to joke all my life that I was born with two left ears, and I want to change. Musicians are artists, and I've asked a question that so far no one has answered. Have there been any studies about colour blindness and musical skills? Do you know any colour blind musicians?

    • @mikegeorge360
      @mikegeorge360  Рік тому

      Thanks for your feedback. Two left ears is a great phrase. I actually have multiple color blind musician friends. One's a great guitarist who introduced me to theory back in the day.

    Dude, awesome! I love your geometric approach! A random correlation for you: the circle of 5ths isn't perfect, right? There's that " , " or wolf interval. That makes it correlate closer with the actual calander (360 v. 365 days.) and therefore (if you wanna get all esoteric) the zodiac. I imagine C would be the spring equinox but that's pure assumption. 🤣

    • @mikegeorge360
      @mikegeorge360  2 роки тому

      I like it. If that's the case, then C is currently in the air. :)

      If you use pure fifths (3:2) then you're right, it won't loop.
      If you use equal temperament fifths, it will loop perfectly.
