What differentiates and distinguishes Buttigieg from the rest of the field (including the top 3 frontrunners currently) is that, he processes each question from Maher and gives thoughtful answers, rather than canned reply that answer-but-don't-answer interviewer's questions, forever steering the answer back to their own agenda. Buttigieg's answers truly give me an insight into this guy as a person, rather than him as a politician, and I really appreciate that. (Maher is a good interviewer too.)

When will liberals learn that you could vote for an idiot like Trump or a coherent professor like Obama but at the end you won't get anything different. The system has been ruled by an oligarchy that uses the branches of government as props in maintaining their power. Keep begging for social services or equality from those powerful elite, center right oligarchs, but they won't do shit because you checked a box. You're only playing their game, and as well as Mayor Pete can compose his sentences or Bernie can bring out the youth - they won't accomplish anything for the working class in America without mobilization. The left in a America has been dead since FDR, and he didn't do the things he did because he was a leftist either, but because the left gave him no other choice.

@audi presley Pete's plan for "Medicare for all who want it" is a closer step to Medicare for all than the ACA. The whole plan allows for private company, employer-paid healthcare. Everyone else goes into a government ran pool that will have the ability to negotiate prices, as well as a agency that has the power to change patents from the pharmaceutical industry by changing things like the amount of time before generics can be released by competitors or even paying a flat price for the agency to hand a patent completely to government itself if the companies will not negotiate in good faith. The same as if your land is needed in a right of way situation. The purpose of all of these things add up to a risk pool so large that it would logically be the cheaper option with a larger network of providers. That Means the "Medicare for all who want it" plan would lead to Medicare for all.

@joe hundertmark - The only way that he gets any chance to debate the big orange blob is if he gets into the Democratic Party debates first. To do that, he either has to poll high enough in the polls chosen by the DNC or he has to get 65,000 unique individual donations to his campaign. So, if you would pay money to see him debate Trump, you need to start now by donating at least $1 to his campaign. While you're at it, donate at least $1 each to all the other progressives who need to get on the debate stage so that the DNC doesn't block progressive voices in the primary campaign.
You can either contribute through his campaign web site or by going to the Act Blue web site and looking him up to donate to his campaign there.

5:46 "We can't paint people into a corner, where they have nowhere to go..."
This lines up perfectly with my philosophy of "flight or fight", where if you leave someone no room to escape or compromise or change their position, they will attack you, because that is the only option left. It's too easy, when one goes into a combative mode, to forget this principle. But, the wisest of diplomats practice this principle regularly. They are always asking themselves, "How can I offer my opponent options, both of which will suit my interests, or in the worst case, that I can live with?" That's some rare wisdom there, that young Pete offers us.

He also reminds me of Obama but not in a good way, and I liked Obama. He has a lot of lofty "hope and change" rhetoric without any actual policy substance. Policy is what should matter, not rhetoric. Look at Obama, for all his rhetoric, he ended up being pro-establishment president who couldn't even pass universal healthcare, and ultimately led to Trump.

    • @Spike.SpiegeI

@@dmitchel0820 I'm not saying this is wrong or right but Pete has said in interviews that he actually thinks the talks others are giving are a bit too policy heavy this early on. He said he doesn't know if it's a good idea to come out basically saying you have everything figured out on day 1 (I'm paraphrasing but you can find the interviews...). You can disagree with his strategy but I just wanted to point out he is running his campaign this way on purpose.
In my opinion I agree that the policy needs to come but for example if this were 2015 Trump wouldn't even launch his campaign until months from now. We just keep starting this race earlier and earlier so I think there's still plenty of time for Pete to back up his ideas with specific policy.

@@Spike.SpiegeI I suppose, I just feel like policy should be the core reason he is running. Everyone should have a clear set of problems they want to address and a set of specific, workable solutions for them. If someone is running without making their solutions central to their platform, it makes it seem like they are in it for personal gain and either don;t have a clear plan or don't want to reveal what the plan is. @@dmitchel0820 It's early days, he had 8 minutes, they had a lot of ground to cover. Expecting his policy proposals to be instantly available is just self-defeating. Nobody should have their mind made completely up right now about who they support, imo. We should be listening to all the candidates. Given how deeply and thoughtfully Pete answered Bill's questions, do you really think he could adequately address specific policies on top of that, all in 8 minutes? No. Look what the Republicans do with the Green New Deal-- they are making up lies about it without even listening to people. Better to get to know who Pete is, then listen to what he's got to offer. More opportunities to listen in the future. And btw, he did talk about his priorities for action, just in the way he talked about what matters. Also, he has enacted policy in the town he's mayor of-- you can research that, it's in the public record.

His answer highlights how he is mainly interested in religion for its political expedience: 9:52
Pete is actually an atheist who recognizes the political power of religion and wants to tap into it.
He is very talented at making those demographic calculations. However, he seems void of policy substance (he admits this; see the end of his Vice interview) which is concerning to me.
Don’t get fooled by his articulate language. Instead, focus on the concrete ways he aims to help others. So far I have heard very little on this.
Is it a coincidence that both people running in the primary with military backgrounds (Pete and Gabbard) were reservists and not AD? Almost sounds like another brilliant political calculation.
Again, nothing against this guy- he’s obviously very talented. It’s what I’m not hearing that concerns me.
I think his primary reason for running is that it’s always been his life goal (since he mentioned wanting to do this when he was in his early 20s). Not because he feels an obligation to help people. The latter should come first.
He’s possibly the most talented career politician we’ve ever seen. I’ll be patiently waiting to hear his policy positions.

@@songbird6248 Why would you say Buttigieg's an atheist? That doesn't really jive w/ many statements he's made. You think he's being disingenuous when he talks about his faith?
I feel ya on the point about him dodging any clear policies he plans to implement (reminds me a bit of Obama or any really good politician who's careful about making promises he/she can't or doesn't plan to keep). He did a good interview w/ Vox (perhaps you're referring to this one?) and talked about the greater importance (as he sees it) being in making changes to the structure of our political system since it is not representative of our views at large. Things like adding additional members to the supreme court that are appointed by UNANIMOUS approval by the other justices and abolishing the electoral college. I think these are great ideas and I really appreciate the focus on changing the system to become more reflective of the values of the majority. If that's done then the long list of reforms that many of us progressives have been chomping at the bit for (and are supported by a majority of the public) could finally be implemented and not suffer that fate of so many other good bills that die at the hands of the senatorial and congressional handmaiden's of the corporate world.
I agree that he's very talented and his service MAY have been a political calculation (the way high schoolers do volunteer work to show it off on their applications to colleges). Overall though, I think it's good to remain sharp and open to skepticism, but I personally haven't detected anything that would lead me to believe he's being disingenuous. Now, when the rubber meets the road, I think he'd lose much of his backbone if elected (as did Obama).
I haven't been as excited about Bernie this time around, but he does stand out still in the way that he does not seem to compromise his value based positions. I trust Bernie's backbone more so than any of the other candidates (save Marianne Williamson) to dig in his heels when necessary to not allow Republican obstructionism to alter his position and that it might even push him to more radical approaches (like declaring a National Emergency). Of course a National Emergency is not a good way to go about anything other than a true and present danger requiring immediate action, and this is why the procedural/systemic updates that Buttigieg talks about to go about fixing the system itself are really compelling. With a fixed system the will of the majority in cases such as medical care, minimum wage, taxes, etc... would be respected and delivered.
