Haha loved that conversation you had with the Goodwill employee. You could TOTALLY tell the nostalgia took hold of her in that moment. My first strategy guide that I bought in the store was for Secret of Mana on SNES! Oh man... I loved that game but it was my gateway RPG and I needed that guide. Great video man!
My first strategy guide was for the first Donkey Kong Country on SNES. I once got grounded from video games for about a week when I was around 4-5 years old so I studied that book cover to cover and memorized all the hidden areas and bonuses. I was the king of that game when I came back to it
Finally I’m caught up took me about two weeks... found you and started watching from episode 1... and because of it I myself have started collecting and reselling...and in the last two weeks my collection has grown so much...even got a free ps2 and ps3 just by asking somebody that turned in games at a pawn shop...let’s see how this goes.. thank you Rick
When I got my NES, strategy guides hadn’t come out yet. Had to go through my copies of Nintendo Power later on or call the Nintendo Power hotline for tips. God I’m old. 😅
I had a few Players Guide’s Nintendo sent every time you renewed your Nintendo Power subscription, kind of mix between a strategy guide and Nintendo Power.
Wow great to see this amazing channel growing, it actually got me back into collecting. Picked up a perfect SNES for $40 with Biker Mice from Mars, had no idea how much the game was when i got it. And hitting the goodwill and thrifts every week now, thanks so much for providing some of the best informational content on UA-cam.
My first strategy guide was for Donkey Kong 64. It actually came with the game and my original N64 from a bundle sold at Sam’s Club back in the day. It lead to an obsession with getting the guides for as many games as possible for the rest of my early gaming existence.
It IS so satisfying to complete a game that you’ve already had a case or manual for. Thats why I grab the case/manuals every time if they are empty (on good games). The employees think I’m weird sometimes for saying I still want the case! Haha!
My first strategy guide was for Pokemon red/blue, I remember getting it at the scholastic book fair, also that Mario sticker on the left of the console looks like he's sniffing his own but, rofl
My first strategy guide was my Nintendo Power magazines. I started getting them from issue #1. Love them. I'm kicking myself in the butt for getting rid of them a long time ago.
Resident Evil was the first strategy guide I ever saw and I bought it as soon as I saw it because I was stuck in the game. I don’t recall ever seeing strategy guides prior to that. There are so many games I would’ve never been able to beat without strategy guides.
When i started gaming.there was no guides.most info came from computer magazines.mainly game reviews some walk throughs and a cheat code page.1982 zx spectrum 48k.1st game owned horace goes skiing.i always wonder how many games over the years have i played.like your stuff bud.full of memories.
back in 1996 i had to buy the game guide to ChronoTrigger for the SNES because it was kicking my butt and i found the guide in Spanish, which was no problem for me because Spanish is my second language. Back then we didn't have any guides online like we have today, definitely a nostalgic buy and would recommend buying these for the info they provide and other game adds from the time period.
Awesome video. My favoritebit of nostalgia is playing 1942 as an arcade game, while I played so many hours of Ninja Gaiden III. Was really surprised to hear how much it now goes for...
My first strategy guild that comes to mind was for ps1 tomb raider 3 I think along with many others... ahh the days of writing codes down on bits paper kept in case. Still puts a smile on my face when I find someone's codes hidden away.
I believe my first guide was the official Nintendo Guide for Animal Crossing on Gamecube. Usually I don't like going to estate sales for video games because I've had next to no luck at them, but this one spoke to me, and they sold it for a dollar. I actually ended up using it a few times.
First Strategy Guide was for Zelda 2 on the NES. Didn’t know book stores carried stuff like that until a friend brought his over one day and I went out and got one for myself with my Dad.
The WWF Attitude strategy guide was my first. My mom got it for me for a buck at the game shop in the mall. I used to get them just because I thought they were cool to have and also because they helped me unlock some of the hidden characters. Great times.
First guide for a game was for Killer Instinct for the SNES. We got it to learn the combos and the finishers. After that for Chrono Trigger to learn how to get all the different endings.
My very first strategy guide was Final Fantasy 10, the wife and I stood in line at midnight release. They gave us free pizza and we bought the guide at the same time. Of course we couldn’t walk out the store with a guide but they mailed it to us about a month later.
I still own my original copy of Pokémon Snap and Goldeneye for N64 as well as well as Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow for Gameboy. They are all missing their front and back covers which shows how well loved they are!
Ha, game guides are definitely before my time, it's true I usually just look up walkthroughs on youtube if I get stuck on a game. Been actually doing that quite a lot recently for the og Shantae game, it's surprisingly hard! I wouldn't mind picking up any if I ever get the chance, they look really cool! I am really into art books though! I love seeing all the details that go into making a game!
The first strategy guide I ever got was for Pokémon Red/Blue. As a 6th grader in 1999 I read through that thing in school so many times. Oh the nostalgia is STRONG!
I remember in high school making Pokemon red/blue/yellow strategy guides and walkthroughs , team building techniques and ideal move sets typing them up on an electronic typewriter and selling them to elementary and middle school kids on the bus in the mornings and making n64 , and ps1 strategy guides for other high schoolers. Never really needed strategy guides started playing nes and master system when I was 6 and they were the current gen my father was a gamer from way back in the pong days through several Atari systems he taught me how to master any game. taught my kids young too.
I bought the strategy guide for Ratchet and Clank back in mid 2000’s I think was my first. Because of your channel I’m out hunting now, it’s so much fun. Picked up a PS2 in great shape last night for $30!!
I don't know if it was my first, but Primas Pokemon Red guide was the most used I had. I used that so much it completely fell apart and even after I sold or trashed my stuff, I kept that book for years. Going to go look it up now, I need it
Resident evil one guide for ps1 was my first strategy guide. Used the guide just for one puzzle but loved the game so freaking much... Best 40 guilders ever spent.
Never really used a strategy guide to progress in a game, but first 2 I picked up were for Resident Evil Directors Cut, and Resident Evil 2. Still have both.
My first ever game guide I remember getting was the Fallout 3 guide when the game released! That boy was a huge encyclopedia of gaming goodness I used it to the bone as a kid!
My brother and I got the original Final Fantasy for Christmas the year it came out, and we needed the strategy guide because we got stuck. I still have that game and guide to this day and it sparked my love for RPGs!
The guide I remember using quite a bit was a photo copy of the legend of zelda majoras mask. Idk how or where I got it from but I needed it. Most memorable guide was the ffxii collectors guide my family bought for me, it was rare getting anything video game related as a kid due to finances. Great video! Trust me, I've almost missed a big fish as well on my last hunt 😑
I had that exact same Mari 64 guide that I got at the Nintendo 64 launch. I don’t know for sure, but i think the first guide I ever had would have either been for Link to the Past or Mortal Kombat II. I THINK it was probably MK II because that was the first game i ever bought for myself for the SNES, and then I got Link to the Past and Super Mario World a little later.
First strategy guide I remember getting was the Pokemon Red guide so much fun. I still have the Gold & Silver one very cool. My favorite would have to be Yoshi Story the colors, images, and the fact there aren't a ton of walkthroughs of that makes me want to get a new one
First strategy guide ever was the official Nintendo players guide. My favorite strategy guide memory though is having the guide for FF VII for a while year before I ever got the game.
I remember buying a used/tattered Pokémon stadium 2 game guide at a garage sale that was suuuper helpful. Made me buy one for every Pokémon game I got afterwards.
First Stratgery guide for me was Final Fantasy VII and Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time Bought Final Fantasy VII from a friend at school for $30 and he gave me the stratgery guide to with it both are still some of my favorite games of all time :) :)
Im 24 and grew up on snes, n64, and playstation 2, but my first ever strategy guide i ever got was on playstation 3 for gta 4 and i got another for saw.
My first strategy guide, kinda, was an ign walkthrough for ocarina of time 3D like 6 years ago. I’m happy to report I finally beat that game a week or two ago no strategy guide involved!
First and only Strat guide I ever got was the 1st gen Pokemon Nintendo power with the stickers. I'm actually on the lookout for a copy with all the stickers in tact.
The first strategy guide I remember reading was for THPS. We need to know how to get the secret tape on the Phoenix down hill level. Then when I worked at GameStop I would pick up random guides when they "penny'd" them out. I figured a penny for a book was pretty good.
The first strategy guide that I can remember using a ton was Pokemon red/blue/yellow. Loved that thing and always used it to build teams whenever I ran through the game.
6:25 From memory, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen guide. I only got it because I knew I wanted to see what was added and what was new to these remakes. I also wanted to see the Pokemon locations - such as who was and was not in the game
First strategy guide: Digimon World 3 (a very meaty JRPG) I also regret throwing it out because I figured there's the internet nowadays. There's nothing better than the physical book with all the beautiful artwork!
For a game - Final Fantasy for NES - it was a special edition Nintendo power. Ninja Gaiden had one too. My first and favorite is the official Nintendo players guide that came w my NES.
The strategy guide I remember the most was a free strategy guide for lego batman and lego indiana jones. I think they were free from a happy meal or one of the lego magazine. I spent a lot of time reading the same pages of the book lol
Mine’s Pokemon Black and White official Strat guide, it’s awesome since there are some tips and tricks there that you really won’t notice while playing the game. That’s why Unova Regions memorable since it’s my 1st time playing it on 2020 and i really furthered my game with the guide..
First strategy guide was for game boy Pokémon red & blue- my sister, cousin & myself would sit next to the wall outlet taking turns using the plug charger and flipping through the book to work together completing the game. So many hours spent sitting in the corner of the living room like that 😂
First strategy guide I bought separately was Final Fantasy VII. I do remember getting a lot of tips for Mario Tennis for the GBC out of one specific issue of Nintendo Power before that though.
My first guide I remember using was the Gamepro NBA Jam strategy guide. I remember thinking how awesome it was to unlock secret characters on that game.
I do the same thing 90 of my games are from Offer/up and Goodwill I worked at Goodwill for almost 4 years. I got some great finds over the years. 5 game expo and the other 5 % is retro game shops
My first strategy game guide was for WWF War Zone on PS1! I think it was late 90's but it really did help me with strategy. Also loved nintendo power, playstation magazine and the tips and tricks magazines!
I think my 1st strategy guide I used was the zelda ocarina of time 64 guide! Also I think you probably should have grabbed that blue n64 controller with the rumble pack because the rumble pack is worth about $20 and the controller goes for $25-$35 depending on condition so maybe you could sell them together for $30-$40 as is with poor stick if you didn't want to replace the stick assuming that it works as is!
My first strategy guide was actually the Nintendo Power magazine. The magazine always had hints and cheats. To be honest before that there was always the 1-900 number lol
I got out of my collection 10 years ago ..I was one of the first people to start the collecting craze back in the mid 90’s..about 2012 I unloaded everything
I think my first strategy guide I remember was for Donkey Kong Country 1. However, I remember the first strategy guide really helping me was for the Zelda Collection for GameCube for Majora’s mask. I was completely lost in that game without the guide,
I still have my original Nintendo Power Super Mario Bros 3 Strategy Guide! That game was such a big deal when it came out. It's still so much fun to play even after all these years.
Lucky dude!! Did you know MK on the SNES was the most expensive game we ever bought here?! I think with tax it came to $74 back then!! I think part of the reason why it was so expensive is they didn't want people really to buy it because all the controversy
I still have my Link to the Past strategy guide which was my first, but I have even more nostalgia for my Ocarina of Time guide. Still have a backpack full of old guides!
My favorite guide is probably Skyrim and I still love to collect them when I find them but I don’t really use them instead I keep them as fun collectors items
I remember struggling so much with Ocarina of Time on the 64 and a lot of my friends having trouble as well, I begged and pleaded with my parents for the guide but finally my awesome aunt got it for me.
My first strategy guide was Pokémon Rev/blue. It used to show you which Pokémon were in each area. It was great. Another I had was the tomb raider 2 one, which I would never have got through without 😅
I've never caught a video when it's gone up because I just found retros channel less than a week ago. I watch way too much UA-cam when I'm in the hospital. First strategy guide I ever remember getting was GTA San Andreas on PS2 launch day, and I loved reading about the cars and all that. Didn't use it much to help me, more for customizing the cars. Thing was as big as a college textbook
@@retrorick vice city is where it's at. The sound track is phenomenal, it just draws you in every time. I need to check out the ridiculously overpriced vice city stories
Another fantastic episode Rick!! Keep em coming my dude!! My first strategy guide I used back in the day was the final fantasy guide for the NES! Also if you didn’t have the map back in the day you were screwed!! I remember having to borrow the map from a friend of my just to beat the game!!
No one else saw the nipple cream just chillen next to the WCW Figures? I'm ROLLING on the ground.
Lolllllll
Rick paid 5 dollars for it and it has a value of 10.. (even though you know he's keeping it)
Specifically came to the comments to see if anyone else saw that! LMAO!

First strategy guide: Killer Instinct on the snes, so cool seeing all the flow charts learning how to pull off the "Killer Combos"
i wore my thumbs out playing killer instinct on super nintendo!
I still have my Killer Instinct Gold for the N64 so good
Literally was just thinking to myself- I wonder when the next episode would be up? Then I got the notification! Haha

Hahahahaha
I never had strategy guides back then only ones I have now are Super Mario Bros Wii and Resident Evil 4 GameCube Awesome NES Score
Batman on the NES still blows me away, even to this day. Great memories...
Lucky dude!! Did you know MK on the SNES was the most expensive game we ever bought here?! I think with tax it came to $74 back then!! I think part of the reason why it was so expensive is they didn't want people really to buy it because all the controversy
My first strategy guide was Pokemon RBY when I picked up my copy of yellow (had already played blue for years by then).
First ever guide I used was for Resident Evil on PS1, never had a memory card so beat the game on my one and only playthrough that day.
My first guides were Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2! I still have them. I used them a ton to find everything. And also to answer the game show questions.
Another I had was the tomb raider 2 one, which I would never have got through without 😅
yes! Pokemon is about to be 25 years old!!!!
Thing was as big as a college textbook
ha gta san adreas is amazing....though i favor vice city, both are incredible
@@retrorick vice city is where it's at. The sound track is phenomenal, it just draws you in every time. I need to check out the ridiculously overpriced vice city stories
Another fantastic episode Rick!! Keep em coming my dude!! My first strategy guide I used back in the day was the final fantasy guide for the NES! Also if you didn’t have the map back in the day you were screwed!! I remember having to borrow the map from a friend of my just to beat the game!!
My first strategy guide was for Kingdom Hearts...Hours spent pouring over that book! I also loved the one for Final Fantasy X!
