Nice Job , I know with some of the older outboards that horsepower output could be altered by simply changing the jets , but never knew a throttle stop on the throttle shaft differed between hp models , i wonder if the throttle stop could be altered with a dremmel tool to increase the butterfly range at WOT on a 19 hp without purchassing a shaft?. Just a thought, thanks for the insight and the easy going approach.
oil cooler ? this is how it helps. what does oil do when it's hot ? it loses viscosity correct ? YES ... well what property does oil provide besides lubrication and heat transfer ? Sealing properties around rings and cylinder bore . well logically cooler oil more viscosity better seal less loss of compression more combustion energy contained on top of piston . Less compression blowing past rings helps along with the other performance improvements to add some 1-2 horsepower over two cylinders. more cylinders more CC's more power saved ... There's your dinner...
Simple. More HP means you need more cooling to operate safely IF the cooling is maxed out. Its the same reason you put a tranny cooler on a automobile if you plan on heavy towing.
great video thanks. question for you I have a what I think is 19 hp Kawasaki on my wright. its blowing oil from the oil pan gasket I believe the rings are worn causing pressure in the oil pan thus forcing oil out the gasket area. have you ever replaced rings/pistons. if so can you infom me on the this process. or if you have any replacement engine for sale. thanks
I have a Kholer with a bad piston. I'm thinking about rebuilding it. I know it's a completely different motor, but it should be close enough to learn from. Stay tuned. After I get this bobcat running, I'll try to do the rebuild next
I have a FH430 and I used a carb off of a 17hp . Does anyone know whether the 15hp and 17hp Kawasaki have a similar horsepower gain in the carburetors?
Mr Fitz, is it possible to get a kawasaki fx730 and bump it up to a kawasaki fx850?.. I was told it's the exact same engine, not too sure about that. please if it is make a video on how to do so! thanks man! 👍👍👍
The displacement is different between a 19hp and 23hp in this model. You didn't increase any horsepower all you did was increase engine speed. The engine and hydros were not designed to turn faster than 3600rpms. I would highly advise getting a tachometer and resetting your governor. Now if you're planning on racing the mower then that is a different story as this will give you increase travel speed and blade speed. You probably lowered the horsepower of the engine by over revving it as it's turning faster than the efficiency of the overall engine characteristics. Increasing engine speed doesn't increase horsepower once you reach the designed peak detailed in the camshaft design or flow characteristics of the heads etc it will begin to produce less power.
+cobra305hp97 So as you say no change in displacement=NO change in horsepower?? GUESS YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A "NEW INVENTION" CALLED A SUPERCHARGER OR ANOTHER= TURBOCHARGER===same displacement ! Derfly
Jam9297, that's correct. Everything hits a limit at a certain RPM, whether it's from carb size or fuel flow, air intake, head flow, or whatever. John Steele, I hope you are being sarcastic. You are, right? The guy making this video thinks we don't get it, but really, he doesn't get it. Does he actually think they both come with the identical size engines with identical cam, heads, bore and stroke? When you put the throttle wide open on your mower, that's not all it has. You can reach over and rev ANY of them higher than the throttle lets it go. Is that a good idea? Not if you want it to last as long as it should. If ya wanna rev, go get ya a K6 GSX-R 600. One of the highest revving super sport bikes made lol. Mine has a 16,000RPM redline. If you want to increase horsepower in your lawnmower, well hell, I guess you'd need to change the jets in the carb, or grind a custom cam, change the piston for a higher compression one (or two), bore and stroke it. Did he give it more horsepower by making it rev higher? That very well may be so. We won't know where the peak horsepower is unless it's put on a dyno. Did the manufacturer use the EXACT same engine in two different models, limit the amount of throttle you can give one and call it 19hp, while the other one sits at 23hp? Fuck no.
I'm surprised that you had to keep cranking on it like you did before it finally started. Looks as tho this engine is shot. But, I'd take it off your hands for a couple hundred. :-)
Yes sir I am working on the same carb on a Kawasaki motor off a RTZ 50 zero turn. I am trying to clean the carb but I am having trouble getting the two screws off the bottom, they are not wanting to come loose and trying to strip out, any tips please?
I was able to get a small pair of vice grips on mine. Try that or tap on the screwdriver a few times. That breaks the bond sometimes. Good luck let me know what works
Thanks for the informative video. My kawasaki 20hp FH601V (same setup as yours) was playing up bogging down etc. I cleared that all up. The problem l have now is no throttle control and she's running full bore, clean revs, no smoke and pto running strongly. There's no response when I up throttle or down just full revs. Can you assist please?
The oil cooler is because when you take a 23 hp and run it at 25, it tends to overheat. The oil cooler compensates for that. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging the engine.
The oil cooler is not to add horse power, the increased RPMs from the wider throttle flap causes a already hot air cooled engine to over heat. If you crank it up you got to cool it down.
RPMs will not increase. That is controlled by the Governor and regulated. The THROTTLE will open more, same as giving it more gas, but speed will remain constant.
Hey Tony , what are your motor designations ? I have a new Scag Vride with a FX600V 19hp. , and I have a 2007 model JD Z445 with an FH721V 25 hp. The latter motor looks like the one in the video . I'm just wondering if this is the difference between my two motors ?
The air filter is restricting your engine from breathing. I removed my filter and exhaust to really open up it up. I haven’t put it on a dunk yet, but imagine I went from 19 too a little over 30 hp.
While I don't suggest it be done, there's another way to improve the over all performance and add to a cleaner combustion chamber/valves. That is to route the PCV hose to the atmosphere and plug where it normally attaches to the intake nipple with a vacuum cap. (I think it's a 3/8" I.D.). An added benefit is that this will provide the fuel pump with a stronger vacuum signal. It's also a good idea to modify the fueling with dual parallel fuel filters with each tank having its own filter. It's optional to eliminate the check valves. The factory muffler is quite restrictive and can be modified to flow better that boosts torque slightly and sound so much pleasing.
Put your ear down by the carb and turn the key on and off. If you don't hear a "click", check the wires going to the fuel shut off solenoid located on the front bottom of the carb. If power isn't going to it, fuel won't get to the carb.
Is the throttle rod supposed to be pushed by the piece that rotates behind the governor plate? I took my carb off to clean it. Upon reassembly I noticed the butterfly’s don’t open or close when I move the throttle control up and down.
I was looking at Kawasaki engine catalog, they have several that are same displacement 852cc but different HP rating..l... so I wondered why....this guy found reason...
The rod makes the gain in hp on a 23 to 25. The oil cooler removes the heat so you dont over heat. Hp to kw . More kw or hp makes more heat. Great video. Plesse make some more
what's the difference with the fr651/691/730, all the same bore and stroke but different HP ratings, someone said it was the carb but i looked at the schematic and the jets are the same, also what are your thoughts about putting a canister filter from an FX engine on an FR engine, do you need to re-jet or replace the carb? there's been debate on that for years and years. kawa sold an upgrade kit year ago which did include jets but not for an FR engine, now they don't even sell them.
You may have two engines both with the same bore and stroke ae: cu. in. but have two different cams or carb's to have two different hp rates. Just need to check p/n's
Might as well go ahead and massage the carburetor, swap out the cam, take the governor off, bore the cylindesr over .030, put in some billet parts and switch it over to run methanol. RIP hydro pumps and deck belt. LOL!!!
Thanks for the gr8 video ! I have the same carb on 19hp Kawasaki engine, could you PLEASE show an internel breakdown and rebuild on this carb?? The numbers on your carb is the same as mine but could not find a MFG. name. Thanks for your help
I know this video is older than dirt, but there aren't many decent videos that talk about this on youtube. the FR651/691/730 are a common riding mower engine and all have different HP ratings but they are the same bore-stroke. After watching this video and looking at schematics for the carbs, the carb throttle shaft is a different letter, it's not the lever , but the throttle shaft itself from what i'm seeing, one has a A after the part number and the other has a D. even if those levers are the same, they way it sits on the shaft may vary the butterfly position, just a hunch.... i've been asking for years and no one could give me a straight answer how the HP could go from 19 to 23 on the same engine. Also, if anyone would like to chime in about an FX canister filter on the FR series engine let me know, rumor is you had to re-jet the carbs. kawasaki sold a canister filter upgrade kit back in the day and it came with new jets. some say the new engines dont require re-jetting but I want proof. the FR engine is still a carb, not fuel injected.
Thanks for the great video! I have a 19hp Kawasaki that lost the stator due to dislodged magnets, will the flywheel need to be replaced or can I purchase new magnets?
Hey thanks Brad. If the motor I have was in fact a 19hp, I see now that the shaft can be altered. I bought the shaft before seeing what the differences were. If I ever end up with a 19hp, I'll do your suggestion. Thanks for watching!
thanks I look forward to watching the rebuilt for the kohler engine
Nice Job , I know with some of the older outboards that horsepower output could be altered by simply changing the jets , but never knew a throttle stop on the throttle shaft differed between hp models , i wonder if the throttle stop could be altered with a dremmel tool to increase the butterfly range at WOT on a 19 hp without purchassing a shaft?. Instead of replacing the throttle shaft, why not modify the high speed throttle stop with a grinder to open further?
you successfully turned your 23hp motor into a 23hp motor!
obie dobie and you successfully made a comment on a 5 year old video.
better seal at piston allows for more force contained on top of piston to forcefully drive piston down in bore for the power stroke...
very good video- you are easy to understand. Thank you
18:34 Love this Sound ❤️
for a 10 cent piece of string, you can tie up the gov. and get 28 hp out of it! I am just joking:)
Actually,,, yup
Spring on your throttle linkage hooks on the little hook (on the spring clip) not above it . Ask me how l know? Lol

What did you pay for this and what will you sell it for? I like that style mower - it is a little pricey for a guy like me though.
Mr Fitz,
is it possible to get a kawasaki fx730 and bump it up to a kawasaki fx850?..
I was told it's the exact same engine, not too sure about that.
please if it is make a video on how to do so!

i'm wondering the same about the fr651/691/730 and also if you can use an FX canister filter on the FR engine without re-jetting.
Could I do that with my FH541v?
Can I put a fs600v engine on my 36 lesco
Does this Mower still going Strong? Can you make a Video of it ?
No, sold it years ago

Fitz's Fixes Wouldn't an increase in rpm almost always yield higher HP unless you got to the point where the power drops off on the top end?
double the rpm literally doubles HP lol
Jam9297, that's correct. Everything hits a limit at a certain RPM, whether it's from carb size or fuel flow, air intake, head flow, or whatever.

The carb was empty. Had to crank till it filled....that motor has been replaced with a 27hp. The 23 went on a 52" Stander. Still runs fine

Increasing RPMs does not increase horsepower on that motor you have to change cubic centimeters

I have the same exact motor and issue. I even replaced the carb shaft back to the original 19hp and still have the same issues
Cool, but it needs a new intake, with a Holly 850 duel-feed double-pumper, and some lake pipes.
You could just use a grinder to cut the plate down a little bit. Just enough to allow it to open the butterflies a little more.

I turned my 19 into a 25, it's the butterfly opening. On a 25 it opens fully. I discovered this because I had both.

Everywhere I have tried to buy part #16041-7004 says it is unavailable from the manufacturer. Anyone know where I can get one?

can you beef up a 15 hp kawasaki that's identical to this motor or would I already need to have a higher hp motor to add more hp to
I have a fx801 and I've been told I can do this and it will be equivalent to a fx850 is this true? What would part number be and called?
I have a 22 kaw that I need a intake for any suggestions thamks
It’s def a 19 got to toro walk behinds same
If standers are so great why would it have a seat?
any of you guys trust any one to buy a manuel for a kaw... engine
The oil cooler WILL NOT ADD HP . It WILL INCREASE cooling area to cope with the extra power you have gained. Geeeeee !
I like the sound
Good stuff. Glad i found your channel. Keep it up.

you will have to replace the flywheel you can't by the magnets

price
The video is 6 years old. But if I remember correctly, it was under $20
I think it is. It's been a while since I rode the red one, but I think this one is as fast or real close.
Not sure about replacing just the magnets. I would bet you can though.
Nice job! It's good to know that adjusting the plate on the slotted screws can improve the RPM's that much.
will that work with the 18 horsepower Kawasaki V-Twin as well?
Love you too Jamie
And it's cheaper to swap motors than it is to do what you're doing
