Earth is about to witness a unique and intriguing celestial phenomenon: a temporary mini-moon. Asteroid 2024 PT5, first detected on August 7, 2024, will momentarily become Earth’s mini-moon, making its closest approach from September 29 to November 25, 2024. This asteroid, with a diameter of just 10 meters (33 feet), will briefly orbit Earth before escaping our planet’s gravitational grasp and resuming its regular orbit around the Sun. While it will be too faint to be seen with the naked eye, its short visit provides significant insights into the dynamics between Earth and nearby celestial objects.**What Is a Mini-Moon?** A mini-moon refers to a small asteroid or space rock temporarily captured by Earth’s gravity. Unlike a regular moon, a mini-moon does not complete a full orbit around Earth. Instead, it follows a temporary path around our planet before being ejected back into its solar orbit. During its brief stay, asteroid 2024 PT5 will trace a horseshoe-shaped trajectory around Earth.
