  • In this video I walk through the steps to assemble the parking brake system on a 99 Impreza. This should also apply to other Subaru models of the same generation, or at least be very similar.
This episode was a bit of a side note in the middle of my braking system overhaul, which you can also watch here.

For future viewer reference, here's the #s for the reused parts in order that they're shown: 26269PA010 (Left) 26269PA000 (Right) the part diagrams just call this a "strut" or "parking brake strut" and then the triangular part is 26268PA000 the part diagrams call this a "plate shoe guide" and can be used on either side. Thanks for posting the video! I'm converting from rear drums to discs and need these references since I'm working from scratch.

That's a good demo. One of the disappointing lessons from professionals is the way most pros completely ignore the parking brakes when doing a typical brake job. There's a separate fee code for parking brakes and if you didn't pay for it they won't touch them. Eventually the parking brake gets seized, which can create a big problem if the drum won't pull off. I find those lower star wheels get very rusty and corroded. Amateurs have more of a chance to do things properly because we aren't racing to get the car out the door. I like to put antiseize on those medial metal to metal contact points, and of course lube the rotating mechanism for the star wheel with high temp grease on the threads. More than once I've had to take it all off and find a cause for noise, often inside the parking brake where hardware rubs on the backing plate.

Sorry just saw this! I show the part # for both the centric kit and the parking brake arms. The centric kit I bought off of rock auto. There are several kits to choose from on there. I can link them in the description.

For some reason when I didn’t mine the bottom spring rubbed on the hub I had to put the bottom spring in the same location but behind everything so it wouldn’t rub against hub

Oh that’s interesting! There really isn’t a ton of room for everything in there haha.

What year and model is this for? Much different hardware and shapes than a 2015 Impreza.

It’s a little hard to see but the thumbnail says ‘99 Impreza. I’ll add it to the title to clarify. Sorry it wasn’t helpful for your car! I’m guessing yours has an electric parking brake?
