  • Fixing Parking Brakes | Subaru Outback | Man About Home
    The rear wheel bearings on the 2009 Subaru Outback were howling, the duct covers on the rear Brake Back Plates were totally rotted away, and the brake pads needed to be replaced in time for inspection. I also replaced the rear drive axles, because they were on the edge. It made sense to do all this work at the same time, and I even renued the parking brake shoes and hardware.
    So I used this opportunity to record a demonstration of how parking brakes are disassembled, reassembled with new parts, and adjusted.

    Randomly found this video. Great video thank you for the detailed explanation. Gotta do my parking brakes on my 2014 outback with the backing plates. Dam rust ate the plaster and rear wheel bearings are shot same with brakes 😂

    Great video
    I am tacking the exact same job with new backing plate, hubs, and hardware.
    Is it possible for me to disconnect cable and then take off backing plate with hardware attached (since I am replacing everything)?
    Also, can I bench assemble everything and then install with brakes installed on backing plate?
    Seems like the cable attachment might prevent being able to do this.

      @manabouthome  Рік тому

      It's probably easier to just disconnect the cable after pulling the brake shoes from the backing plate. I think you're right. The cable attachment is in behind the brakes shoes, so it probably can't be done the way you're asking about.

    Thanks for making this video! I'm trying to find the complete kit of backer plates, various parts and brake shoes that you acquired but am not finding it online. Could you please tell us where you got it, or even better, provide a link? Thanks!

      and just to clarify, by "brake shoes" I meant the parking brake pads

      @@sigurdpanke2612 I got the backing plates directly from a Subaru dealer that sells parts on line. A browser search should find multiple options. All of the other parts came from rockauto.com. I've been a rockauto customer for years, and they've always been good. Good luck and thank you for watching!

      @@sigurdpanke2612 I just saw rockauto has parking brake shoes at a closeout price. When you're in the desired Subaru dropdown, click the display closeouts selection.

      Thanks for the follow up! I had not heard of rockauto before, and after taking a first look at their website, they look like a great option for future needs.

    any tips for removing the cable from the backing plate? I know there's a clip that comes off, but do you also need to spread those tabs/ears on the backing plate to pull the cable out? mine is very rusty, could probably use a new backing plate but I'm worried I won't be able to get the hub off

    • @manabouthome

      I soaked mine with a lot of penetrating fluid, for a long time. Then I tapped them with a hammer to loosen them up. They actually pulled out pretty easily.

      Thank you! Amazingly, they're still in use today! I remember driving a '69 Pontiac Lemans at 80 MPH on Route 84 in the Hudson Valley. I hit the brakes really hard to slow down to a safer speed and all that happened was loud vibration and it hardly slowed down. 4 wheel drum brakes was all that car had. Disc brakes were more of an upgrade in those days. Thanks for watching!
