The Founding Myth is a brilliant book with properly researched material, balanced arguments and an important work of reference.
I was extremely impressed that he said he'd ask Washington about slavery.
Claiming that America is a Christian country is a flat out lie, and unconstitutional.
The First Amendment states:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..."
The First Amendment forbids Congress from favoring any particular religion.
This includes Christianity.
I'm reading *"The Founding Myth, Why Christian Nationalism Is Un-American."* I still have a long way to go. But I'm already learning a lot.
Fantastic book. I'm not even American and it was totally engrossing.

I would really like to see a discussion between Andrew L. Seidel and renown conservative podcast personality Ben Shapiro or "Christian" pseudo-historian David Barton on this topic. Shapiro on his podcast has stated America was founded on "Judeo-Christian Principles". David Barton has been known to make shit up, lie about the Founding Fathers so-called "faith". Can you put it together?

That was extremely educational. Seidel is a sharp cookie. If Christians care about being allowed to practice their version of Christianity, then they should care to keep church and state separate. They would rebel if Mormons became the norm and were voting/passing laws to benefit their beliefs....or Muslims. Our laws cannot reflect religion. It doesn't matter if you're an atheist, Christian, Muslim, if we don't keep it separate then all will suffer consequences. After all, leaving God out of constitution IS the original American Experiment!
One cannot underestimate the influence of the insidious "Family" and Douglas Coe when one discusses christian nationalism in the US.

This is my favorite part.
Regardless of any religious beliefs the Founding Fathers may have held,
in no way does it impact on me,
or give Congress the right to pass laws promoting or suppressing religious belief,
or the absence thereof.

How much longer will we have to swear on the bible in courts or to serve in public office. Why hasn’t this practice gone away ?
I'm a police officer in southern Finland. Though our country is mostly secular, when summoned to court we're still expected to swear on a bible before the judge when giving witness testimonies or take an as pointless ceremonial oath to tell the truth. I've several times declined and invoked my right to give my word instead as a measure of my honour. When asked for justification I've argued it not serving any purpose if the goal initially is to merely invoke fear of some retribution manifested in a supernatural intervention, since it then only would apply on believers and superstitious in particular, thus justice not being uniform to everyone. It has every time been approved of and I intend to urge this as a common practice nation wide.

The forefathers were a mix of theists, deists, and a couple of atheists if I'm not mistaken. Although, what truly matters is what's in the Constitution, particularly the First Amendment.

I find it interesting that people who are here on earth for only a finite amount of time want to use that time to gain power over others (political and religious) when in the end, everyone ends up dust and bones anyway (as sad as that is to reflect upon). I have a difficult time understanding that motivation because I don't share it. As for religion and its place in the USA, the best way to ensure religious freedom is to live in a secular society. For many, that statement sounds counter-intuitive. You can practice your religion, you just can't practice it on me. It is so simple. What's the problem? By keeping it out of the public square you never have to worry about another religion competing with yours for dominance. What's not to like about that? Religion is great at scare tactics. "Christianity is under attack." No, it's not. You've overreached and we're trying to even the playing field and get you to play nice. Go to church, pray on your time at home, at church, even walking down the street (just do it quietly to yourself). I read Andrew's book and recommend it. I'm not saying that I agree with every detail (I read it a few months ago so it is not fresh in my mind to give specifics) but it is certainly highly recommended.

Being desist is not athestism. Desist have their own beliefs about God or gods. Their beliefs are not stuck on any established religion. An atheist is someone who believes in no god or religion.
The Founders were individuals some where Christian not in Christian sense but deist sense. My father is a deist he believes there is a god or gods controlling something.

When people call or refer to themselves by a certain brand of religion ( ie ; Anglican) do they really know what they seem to identify with and why and the real differences between theirs and the other brands ? these guys are liars. The founding fathers got their ideas on the freedoms from Christian ministers like John Lathrop. In 1632 Lathrop preached the Separation of Church and State. It meant the government has no right interfere in the religious affairs of citizens. It meant citizens can practice their beliefs anywhere, anytime, anyplace they choose. He preached the freedom of speech, freedom of the press. Freedom of religion. Etc. It was the foundation of the Bill of Rights. It was based on the belief that men had God given rights....never truth an Atheist....never.
