Started my Megellan Zinnias the other day..popping up already....should have mentioned that a heating cable under the seed flats make the germination so much faster!.....Looks like it's gonna be a fantastic summer for us this year!
+SuperWoodyboy - We are looking forward to a terrific summer. Can't wait till consistent temps are ready and waiting for planting. On May 10, 1990 we had a major snow storm in Wisconsin that damaged an incredible amount of trees, including several of ours. Generally May 15th - May 30th is our earliest opportunity to plant safely. Thanks again for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
Thank you, Atimnile. Once you see those seeds in the spring, you just can't help yourself. We always buy too many, but it's fun. Glad you are in our lovely state. Enjoy gardening every day; our season is so short here. Thank you for watching, sharing and caring. Lynn & Richard www.WisconsinGarden.com
Don't forget about the host plants!!! They are essential for the butterflies ,since they are the ONLY things that their caterpillars will eat. And you can't have Butterflies without caterpillars!!! The female will search far and wide for host plants and when she does, she'll lay hundreds of eggs on the plant. You'll notice it when you see a butterfly just hoping from plant to plant on the leaves. In several of our 2015 garden tour videos we discussed several of the Arizona Blanket Flowers that we included when we reclaimed in our front porch garden area. +Agr414 - Hope you went online and Google "Monarch Butterfly Watch" and post your location and sighting. You can actually watch the yearly migration patterns as they head up to Canada. Glad the weather is getting closer to being constant so that we can get our veggies growing early this year. Fingers crossed. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
When you said it was hot I thought to myself "Oh man it must have been hot" then you said it was almost 80 and I smiled and giggled. Oh I wish 80 was considered hot here. ☺ Then again you get snow and we do not. I wouldn't be able to handle your cold weather. I can't wait to see your flowers growing in the videos to come. I also planted sunflowers in my garden and I can't wait to see your variety of sunflowers grow.
+JulV Wildcat - Richard can relate to your thoughts about cold weather. Glad he loves me and is willing to put up with the cold. Remember our blood needs to adjust from those frozen months to the warm up. So in Wisconsin when the temps rise above 32, people start wearing flip-flops and shorts while ice fishing. For us that's the start of a heat wave. Now when you're digging and doing heavy lifting in 80 degree weather you can easily lose 50 pounds of sweat an hour as opposed to doing the same in very comfortable 60 degree weather. We are able to get a lot more done in cooler weather. Not complaining, just have so much prep to do in the garden before our daughter gets married in a couple of weeks. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
I ordered Encap too! Coming tomorrow. I feel like Johnny come lately. But better late than never. I just planted two of my sidewalk tree beds with wild flower seeds. Hoping to get 9 more done by the weekend. I might have to make a special trip to my local dollar store to pick up those boxes. Already looking forward to doing it again next year. I will slowly convert my entire neighborhood into a wild flower paradise.
Hi Ivana. Now that sounds amazing, converting your entire neighborhood into a wild flower paradise. Why Not! As Richard would say "You Go Girl" but then he's so supportive of whatever I want to do. Have fun sowing those seeds of joy. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
I LOVE the dollar store zinnia seeds. my daughter and I plant a zinnia garden every year using the dollar store seeds. It's my happy place! I don't intentionally plant milkweed, but there must be some growing around here. We have monarch butterflies everywhere. +Matthew Padilla - We remember May 10, 1990 when we had a freak snow storm that was so heavy it toppled many trees in Wisconsin. Early in the morning we tried our best to shake and rake the snow off our trees but several cracked down to the ground. Actually the weather here has been fairly warm, near 80 on Wednesday, now in the 60's and very nice working weather, especially all the heavy stuff. Glad to hear you've been patient before safely planting. You could cover things if needed. Keep us posted. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard

Carried away with seeds?!? Say it ain't so. lol!! And my wife thought I'm bad! (Still loling) But then again, you have the yard to put them all in. It's going to be awesomely beautiful! I want to see Richard dancing...no, not nude, just dancing as he plants. I first heard of National Nude Gardening Day from England. A naked lady gardener was videoed by her hubby as she gardened...in her greenhouse. And only from the shoulders up. Funny thing, the video kept starting & stopping and she was getting awfully flushed looking on the restarts. It was funny to watch. Wonder whatever happened to that channel? BTW, Happy Mothers Day, Lynn.
+Chris Dahl - As far as Richard's dancing, he often does that and other silly things behind the scenes in his endless pursuit to try and distract my thoughts about gardening. Those he edits out. He doesn't even bare his legs on a really hot day, let alone going to that extent on this celebrated day from England. But after seeing lots of English humor, we have no doubt as to why they decided to celebrate that day to begin with. Channels come and go. Maybe they will release the reruns on the 50th anniversary to see what people used to do for entertainment. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
Thanks for your question. Since it was a variety of seeds that we planted, the different flowers sprout at differing times. Within 2 weeks, we could see the earliest flowers coming up. Another factor is the weather, and also if they are watered on a regular basis. Within a month, some were flowering. Hope this is what you were after. We hope you will grow a butterfly garden. If you do, please let us know how it turns out. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
can you please tell me if you filmed a follow up video to this one? So we can see how your seeds worked out? I have tried this method before, unsuccessfully ... but maybe because the area I used is prone to weeds and I was plucking new plants and not actual weeds? Ooops! But I would love to see a link if you have a follow up video. Thank you!
Yes, Richard is currently producing the follow up video which he hopes to publish shortly so our viewers can see how this area turned out. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
Sadly none of them ever fully developed. Very disappointing. If we ever tried it again, we would probably start them indoors where we would have more control of the growing environment. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
Thank you for the response! I was just curious because I want to buy strawberry seeds but am a bit hesitant. A friend of mine successfully started yellow and alpine strawberries from seed. But for some reason after they got a little bigger they all just died. Everything else she had going in her greenhouse grew like crazy. She is typically pretty good at seed starting. I did research, there are some odd colored strawberries out there, but we never know if the person selling them is legit.
The seeds arrived as promised via Amazon sellers from China. Google "strawberry bare root plants for sale." Very reputable growers although most red varieties. Highly recommend buying at least 2-3 different varieties that produce at different seasons. TKS Lynn & Richard
So... I'm going crazy with seeds too... and you've inspired me with zinnias. Do you stake them? I've watched several of your zinnia planting videos, but I don't think you ever mentioned staking, is that because you plant so densely?
Hi Sandra. In the past, we planted rather densely so we didn't have to stake them, but then we did plant them inside a fenced area. They are rather sturdy and seem to hold their own quite well without any support. If you have a chance, watch our latest video where we discuss what's going in our traditional Zinnia bed. May you, your family and friends celebrate a healthy and happy Easter Holiday. Again, we truly appreciate your support at this time. Stay safe and thank you again for staying in contact and for watching, caring and sharing. it's a great time to catch up on our missed garden adventures at www.WisconsinGarden.com - #KeepTheLoveGrowing - Lynn & Richard
How tall do the Butterfly and Hummingbird flowers get once they are finished growing? Also do they regrow back next year or do you have to replant them? Great video
Hi Michelle. The orange butterfly weed is a compact and colorful plant that is nectar and pollen-rich, which attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, along with a host of other beneficial insects. It is considered a North-American native and can grow as a clump anywhere from 12" to 36" tall. It also has some amazing elongated seed pods in fall that you can harvest and spread. While we also grow common milkweed, butterfly is definitely one of our favorite easy-to-grow pollinator plants that look great wherever you decide to plant them. There are classified as perennials. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
+Debbie Boullion - If you mean is it safe to start planting them in your outdoor garden today, we do not plant anything before May 15th - May 30th just to be safe. If you mean can you plant them together as companion plants, yes you can. You do want to rotate them to a different part of your garden each year so that you're not planting the same veggies in the same spot each year. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard

Lynn & Richard
is it safe to plant tomatoes and peppers I am in northern WI
+Debbie Boullion - If you mean is it safe to start planting them in your outdoor garden today, we do not plant anything before May 15th - May 30th just to be safe. If you mean can you plant them together as companion plants, yes you can. You do want to rotate them to a different part of your garden each year so that you're not planting the same veggies in the same spot each year. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and sharing.
