    Awesome video!!! Very informative!! I wish all garden centers had people like Calvin working for them. Very knowledgeable. I have this problem every time I go shopping for plants. No one can help me. Thank goodness for UA-cam. If you can't find someone like Calvin, at least you can look him up on UA-cam and get your questions answered. If I haven't said already. Thanks Calvin. Thanks Volunteer Gardener for posting this video. Now I have the tools that I need to finally complete my butterfly garden. I'm excited.!!!!!!

    I have several large pots of Agastache (aka Hummingbird Mint), Crocosmia, and a huge Butterfly Bush (non-seeding type) in my yard that attract Hummers and Butterflies. I also planted this year some pots of Echinacea (coneflower) and Cat Mint. Echinacea was mainly planted for the seeds they provide finches. My Hummers feed both on the plants and the feeders I hang up. Just about everything I plant is to feed Hummers especially, except for my Lily plants, they are for me as they smell so wonderful!

    This year I noticed that the hummingbirds are feeding on the native plants frist before feeding at the feeder. I live in zone 7a in GA. They arrive here in mid April I usually see the males frist and then the females& juveniles in May till late September. They really are attracted to the black&blue saliva. The black & blue saliva is easy to grow and it spreads in the garden. Out of all the pollinator plants in my garden they are very busy on the back&blue saliva.

    Thanks for your video and I would just like to say that yours and other similar video's are very inspirational and as a result I have made quite good progress in planting plants that are good for the butterflies and bees in both my garden and in my parents garden. There has been a big decline in butterflies since I was a kid but only today I did see quite a good few number in my parents garden along with many caterpillars on my cabbages which was fine ( I can go to the supermarket!). My garden has loads of bees and some butterflies from time to time, am hoping to improve upon it. Only a few years ago, it was a small piece of wasteland so it is completely untrue to say we can't change the world, it is possible. Birds, bees and butterflies everybody, the 3 B's to think about in your gardens.

    lol i got a plant in my garden about 2 ft tall and i noticed things moving on it and saw about 25 huge caterpillars on it and thought wow! im going to take a photo of this, so i did. and the the very next day i went to check on the plant, and every single leaf was gone! along with the caterpillars! all i had left was a long stalk! now its been 2 weeks since then and now theres little leaves growing back with no caterpillars but i noticed that there are thousands of little sandfly looking things on it, and im wondering if theyre lil catterpillars or something? i have no idea about plants or this butterfly bush i have so ill wait it out anther few week and ill have a look again

    It might be helpful to interested gardeners if you mention the location of this garden, so one can compare growing season / conditions with their own. After a bit of further looking, it appears to be Nashville, TN...correct?

    • @volunteergardener
      @volunteergardener  6 років тому +1

      Yes. Volunteer Gardener is produced by Nashville Public Television. It broadcasts on public tv stations statewide, but we have quite a number of You Tube subscribers to our channel too. That is a by product of our broadcast delivery.

    • @sharaudramey9336

      can you explain this?

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 3 роки тому +2

      @@sharaudramey9336 People start seeing caterpillars eating the plants down, but don't realize that, THAT'S what the plant is for so they panic and pick off and kill the caterpillars.
      They forget that caterpillars become butterflies/moths and that after being eaten, the plant will grow back.
      So yes everybody, when you plant a hostplant, the caterpillars WILL eat it. That's what it's *FOR*
      When the caterpillars have turned into butterflies and moved on, the plant WILL regenerate itself for the next future batch of caterpillars.

    Are zinnias friendly to butterflys and hummingbirds?

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 3 роки тому

      Yes!! Very!! They *LOVE* them
      Just be sure to use a variety that has the little bright yellow parts exposed for easy access to nectar, and NOT the varieties that are grown with a lot of petals that make them look like pom-poms

    • @tymck9694

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, Petunia are good. I've seen butterflies use them as a nectar source. I think it depends on the variety though.
      But, from what I've heard, they can host tomato hornworm caterpillars which will then turn into Hummingbird/Sphinx moths and pollinate your flowers at noon and night 😊

    Butterfly 🦋 bushes can be problematic! And invasive. Please do your research before planting. Also, it's important to stick to Milkweed native to your area! And Tropical Milkweed is a bad idea.
