On January 23, Takashi Yamazaki, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, on their work on Godzilla Minus One. All 610 of the film's visual effect shots were handled by a crew of 35 artists at Shirogumi's Chōfu studio, under the supervision of Yamazaki, and direction of Kiyoko Shibuya. Yamazaki himself had to go overtime and do the visual effects himself at certain occasion. The entire process spanned from April 2022 to May 2023. Thank you, Yamazaki. Thank you, Toho. And thank you, Godzilla.

今日4回目を見に行ってきました！なぜか一番胸を打ちました。今までYTなどで色々な情報を知ったからかもしれません。この映画の作成決定は4年以上前、3年かけて30稿の脚本の書き直し、撮影、編集などなど。それがちょうどコロナ渦の最中でどれだけ大変だっただろう。一番観客が映画館にいない時に「とにかく面白いゴジラ映画にするために」作り上げた関係者には尊敬と感謝しかありません。これは映画館で見るべき映画です。いずれ配信されるからと待ってる方は絶対後悔します！今見れる時に映画館でぜひ見てください！
終戦時に唯一健在だった重巡高雄を映像化したいがために、ゴジラ-1.0の設定を戦後直後にしたと言われるほど山崎貴監督がこだわったシーン。
そしてVFXの山崎と言われているにもかかわらず、リアリティにこだわって反対を押し切って海で撮影してあまりの揺れの過酷さで一番後悔した山崎貴監督。

It definitely was well deserved. We should be proud. Hopefully GXK will do well too. Obviously it won’t get a nomination, but reviews and box office success I wish for the crew behind GXK.

The ocean chase scene looked so real. Such an amazing film.
They filmed it on actual sea, pretty crazy considering there would be no green screen available

I didn’t realize how many visual effects shots were in this movie. What’s even more mind boggling is how it was made on such a shoestring budget.

I've seen Godzilla Minus-One 3 times and after watching this visual effect breakdown, I have even more appreciation for the artistry and hard work that went into it. Loved, loved the movie.

This wasn’t shown in the video, but the close-up shot with the water mine in Godzilla’s mouth, I can’t tell if that's entirely CGI or an animatronic built for that close-up. That’s how good the VFX are in this film, much deserved Oscar Nomination 👏
This film must win Best Visual Effects. Takashi Yamazaki and his team deserve it.

One of the great movies of all time. Truly spectacular and with an amazing story and characters. If you haven't seen it yet you are missing something special. Godzilla is The King of the Monsters and he shows it here......
The effects in this movie were great im still not sure if the close up of Godzilla’s mouth was practical or cgi
All Godzillas were made with CGI. So Mr. Yamazaki took full advantage of his closeups that were impossible with rubber-suit Godzilla.
$15 Million which isn’t even a quarter of the budget used in the 2023 Hollywood movies and yet this looks better than all of them combined

The scene of Godzilla chasing the boat I honestly refuse to believe that wasn't a practical life size head in that shot. The effects just look so real in that scene.
This is why no matter one. No films will pass the films by toho. They’re the creator of the beast and know how to use him.

what Minus One understood (and Shin Godzilla understood even better) is that you CAN make CGI look practical, so long as you limit the animation to an extent.
It's not the texture detail that gives CGI away, it's the animation. Too much movement in CGI always looks kind fake. Godzilla always looks best when his movements are slow and deliberate. I think Hollywood can learn a lot from this approach

Proof that the problem in films IS NOT the use of CGI, but rather the lame stories and directors use of the tool. We give far too much credit to Directors who are mostly hacks. CGI has long been saving these guys films, which theyve long used as an eyecandy crutch for their lack of good ideas and good direction. And as such.. theyve only gotten worse over time to the point that even CGI can no longer save them. But here is a film that uses a ton of cgi in the way its suppose to be used, and guess what? in the right hands with the right minds... GOLDEN!!! stop blaming CGI when its the failure of pre-production.

Funny how people always run away in the path of the monster instead of left or right and get out of their path...
The vfx staff was too elaborate in their own cuts, so several cuts were left unattended. So Director Yamazaki planted trees in the mountains himself, and planted grass on the airfield for the Shinden scene.
