That opening was utterly nostalgic.
Hey NUSensei! Here for some C&C between arrows?;D
Soundblaster Config for DOS... that certainly does bring back many happy memories.
Absolutely love this game. Incredibly innovative both in gameplay and in the story telling medium.
Was so sad that Westwood got gobbled up.
Hopefully the remasters end up being good.
RA2 is one of the first videogames I ever experienced, and I still play it to this day, timeless...
For me, Dune 2000 was my first proper PC game (as in, not a demo disc) and my brother bought RA2 soon after. :D
Both long time favourites, alongside Metal Gear Solid, and Ocarina of Time!
@@JanTuts Same here! :D ... Dune 2000 was my first game and it completely blew my mind! I truly felt like a god or something controlling little people. Not to mention it got me to read the novel when i eventually learnt how to, lol.
Me too. It's probably my favourite Westwood game of all. Heard somewhere that the whole C&C series is going to get a make-over, but with EA you have to see it to believe it.
@@MRayner59 They've got Petroglyph-ie some of the original CnC guys, incl Frank Klepacki-tagged to do it, so looks like it's serious at this stage anyway.
me 2
Where's the rest of the ending?!?!!
A bit late, but the version on the GDC site is a biiiit longer! :) Unfortunately it is also not the full thing, but at least you know what Louis was talking about. www.gdcvault.com/play/1025777/Classic-Game-Postmortem-Command-Conquer starts at about 56:15
My heartfelt thanks to you for making my childhood awesome.
Kia Montgomery's voice maintains a constant pitch, making it sound almost synthetic. What a unique timbre.
She's got a face to go with that voice too. Back in the day must have turned some heads.
I love you guys . The Red Alert 2 and Yuri Revenge are my #1 games .
This is totally maxing out the nostalgia factor. I remember buying that PC magazine with an eye-popping grayscale cover photo from C&C that contained a CD with the actual demo of the game on it. I played the hell out of those 3 levels as a kid... Haven't played any strategy game I enjoyed so much ever since then.
Where is the final part?!?! Pleeeeaaaseeee!!!
In the end, really nice talk, very inspiring, all the challenges they faced reminded me about those far times where everything related to game development wasn't so obvious and natural as it is now, luckly for every one of us.
New artists and developers should look back to those times and feeling how amazing was finishing a project despite all the technology limitation we had, all the uncharted routes those people had to navigate in order to create games and tools and designs and so on without help, internet, books, thousands and thousands of tutorials now available for free, just dream your game and work hard and smart every day for it!
I've been on a bit of C&C binge lately for some reason after I finally got Red Alert 2 to work properly, so the timing of this is absolutely perfect. Thanks for the great video, GDC!
We were there, I'm glad GDC decided to release this to the public. For our summary:www.moddb.com/mods/tiberium-secrets/news/gdc-19-and-command-conquer-postmortem-recap They eneded with a performance from Frank, which is not on the video for some reason, probably rights reasons. It was Hell march BTW.
I've never even played a C&C game and I can't help but grin through the whole thing. It really does sound like it was an amazing project to work on, and an amazing team.
LOVE! to watch these. Important game for me. This channel is awesome.
I truly loved the franchise not only the games itself but also to the community as well. It's always been my heart and soul....
Love this game. Seeing that installation screen again genuinely made me feel warm inside.
Frank Klepacki is a sonic god. Seriously, an immensely underrated video game composer.
After 24 years Joe still doesn't age a bit just like Kane.
Wait a minute...
Joe and Kane both look the same.
Joe and Kane both doesn't age.
Joe and Kane both are awesome.
Conclusion : Joe = Kane
Does that mean Joe is secretly Kane pretending to be a normal guy?
HE WAS THE MESSIAH ALL ALONG!
KANE LIVES!
Brotherhood. Unity. Peace.
Peace through power!
Wonderful game, wonderful studio.
Great intro in the video, and thank you Louis for putting this together. Like CnC, very innovative and inspiring.
One of my favourite game series of all time, Kane is also one of my favourite characters, the dude that played him really got into that character and totally stole the game.
I don't even remember clicking the like button, but here it was, before 2:00
I upgraded my 486 DX2 66 to a CD ROM and sound card just to play this game! It was glorious :-) And this was one of the best DoS installs ever.
Openra lives on
I played OpenRA Dune 2000 earlier this week! :D
Liked before watching ! Gotta finish some stuff first then I will watch this! AMAZING!
I can't wait for the C&C95 and RA1 remaster.
Me too
Let's hope they come over to the consoles; they'd be very welcome guests.
Man, that Installation routine was something else … I mean … talk about immersion!
Warcraft, Starcraft, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun. Golden age of gaming and soundtracks!
Awwwwww…. where is Hell March at the end?!
That was a Red Alert piece, not CnC.
TD's soundtrack kicks all the follow-ups' asses, hell march is kewl but it ain't no Act on instinct.
God bless Tiberian dawn, what a game; gameplay, presentation, sound, they don't make em like they used to.
Hope they can remaster them right, since the Original people are involved, from Petroglyph...
Awesome intro Thanks!
What was the "something special" they ended that with? I was waiting to see what he was talking about then *poof*, video ends. :(
In the end of the GDC Vault video, Frank grabs a guitar and starts strumming as the Hell March is playing, but the performance is cut off there as well as there seems to be some technical issues? www.gdcvault.com/play/1025777/Classic-Game-Postmortem-Command-Conquer
If I had to guess, it might be a performance rights problem as it involves music, easier to just truncate for the Vault/UA-cam.
These guys are absolute gods
why yes youtube yes I would like that. RIP Westwood you were another level of developer, I wish to be just like you.. but you know.. ALIVE. lol
Petroglyph is involved in a remaster of the original CnC and RA. (Kane Lives!)
I absolutely love CnC! The intro clips where it showed the installation brought me back to the excitement of playing this game on my pentium 1. lol crazy.
Westwood Studios was my childhood
I remember playing Red Alert when I was about 3 on a Windows 95, it was one of the major influences that made me get into game design.
Hahahaha that audio guy at the end had one job. . .
EA employee for sure!
Oh lou you're just being lazy. Haha Good Stuff.
Later they did it again with Blade Runner. Intel told them it could not be done. But they did it:
"When we told Intel that we were doing a 640x480, 65,000 color game that emulates true color, with a 16-bit Z-buffer and six channel CD-quality audio, they said you can't - the PCI bus can't support it. So we felt good about ourselves, because we hadn't even mentioned the 750,000 polygons for the characters yet."
Too bad we can't have awesome installation sequences like that anymore, since most games are behind DRM such as Steam.
As if games installed from CDs didn't have DRM. Anyone remembers StarForce?
Uh... I never said that, though.
Steam is not a DRM.
Yes, it is. You need it running (even in offline mode) in order to play any games you purchased in its Store.
If you uninstall Steam, you lose access to your games until you reinstall it and keep it running in the background.
@@MBOmnis What you've just said has nothing to do with DRM.
Where's the rest of it!?
Great talk
Holy shit! Finally!!!!!
Nod forever Kane will never die
Peace through Power!
If I am cut, do I not bleed?
Nope, Herzog Zwei was the first modern style RTS.
But Dune 2 was in fact the first of its kind, thee first Westwood RTS, yes.
Oh, just a couple minutes later he does in fact mention Herzog, wow.
Awesome to see this :D
before C&C4 came out, it's one of my biggest fandom
still playit everyday, on openra form, sure has some diferecnes from original but its a blast to play
For the Brotherhood!
ONE VISION ONE PURPOSE!
PEACE THOUGHT POWER
Nox post mortem next, please!
According to an article by Variety (variety.com/2019/gaming/features/ex-westwood-devs-reminisce-about-making-original-command-conquer-1203169973/) the final part of the talk (which is cut off here) was a live guitar performance by Frank Klepacki.
Good thing it was cut off, based on the intro performance
C&C and AoE i say had top install on how they installed and what they did
The UA-cam Compression went nuts on this intro xD
Westwood knew how to incorporate FMV in to their games, not like Sierra. Plus dope music tracks and innovative gameplay. Combination that could not be beaten then and gave rise for them to become the leader in RTS games of the 90s.
A remaster of CnC and RA is coming, though not very soon, a subreddit about it exists and news articles...
How could this video end without showing us the special ending they wanted to show???!?!!?
Dammit why cut it like that in the end :(
EA has a DLC for that
one vision. one purpose!
Peace through Power!
Remember registration cards?
The intro should've Hell March 2 or Grinder.
Aww too bad the finish didnt work out.
Why cut off the special end?
I'm surprised nobody talked about the sandbagging bug. 😁
?
@@Ytnzy250 the enemy will not destroy sandbags. So you can create a sandbag structure that stretches all the way to the enemy base, then encircle it trapping the enemy in.
Now that you don't have to defend against enemy attacks, you can focus on building a massive army, move it in bulk towards the enemy base, attack once and win the game.
Never heard of that one.
But that's cheating thou bruv, where's the fun in that?
Okay, maybe the 1st time you be lol. 😁 👍
@@Ytnzy250 advanced levels can be frustrating because the enemi AI cheats and can build an army faster than you (and without the resources to do so).
So used sparingly the sandbag trick can help. In c&c 2 they fixed it though. 😁
Holy shit that Orangutan story, I couldn't stop laughing.
AH NO, WHY DOES THE VIDEO END THERE?!
A bit late, but the version on the GDC site is a biiiit longer! :) Unfortunately it is also not the full thing, but at least you know what Louis was talking about. www.gdcvault.com/play/1025777/Classic-Game-Postmortem-Command-Conquer starts at about 56:15
It starts at 00:04:00
In games like this you just don't want to skip 1 second.
what you cut the ending off.
Looks like the video is incomplete, is there a point to watch it? :p
No, you're bad and you should feel bad!
rain in the night
You can find "some" of the final surprise here (but not that much, sorry :( )
www.gdcvault.com/play/1025777/Classic-Game-Postmortem-Command-Conquer
C&C is a great game but the real magic happened in Dune 2, the first RTS.
"It took us forever to code C&C."
"It took us five seconds."
compile not code
I LOVE Klepacki as a composer, but that was some god-awful guitar playing at the start there.
Yes and out of tune too.
Yes
23:33 - KANE LIVES.... AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved C&C
then EA made a C&C mobile game and it's been AYYYYYYLMAO ever since.
then again, i doubt they can compete with starcraft in the competitive space so what does that leave for a C&C type game?
C&C was always about long single-player campaigns, world-building, and fun multiplayer.
Its niche was occupied by series like Total War, Dawn of War, and Company of Heroes, but CA and Relic made some blunders recently and there is a lot of demand for new games from RTS fans.
They will remaster CnC and RA - originals, there is a subreddit...
Guys, I was not mentally prepared to listen EVA tell stories about her life.
How I miss the old command and conquer. EA butchered it !!! Now we have command and conquer rivals which did the same thing that Blizzard is doing to Diablo. Two of my childhood friends being killed in front of me with no hesitation or remorse.
The content itself is great but sound levels are so screwed :( volumes are going randomly up and down.... A pain for non-english ppl to hear :(
It's weird coming back to its opening scenes and seeing it clearly as the militaristic murican proganda as it was.
WHERES THE SPECIAL ENDING???!
7404 Monroe Spring
Kane lives in death.
Joe Kucan has barely aged except for his (facial) hair color.
Seth's actor though... Yikes, the years have not been kind to him :(
wew, EVA is a hottie
Command & Conquer rules.ini
tesla coils !
pretty sad. they only known for these 2 games , were they have made dozen of other rts.
Music was great but honestly this game had some of the most poorly designed missions ever where it relied on player trial and error to figure out exactly what you were supposed to do. I particularly hate the mission where you just get like 3 vehicles and need to run directly through enemy fire to a fenced off area. Also the mission where you get 6 grendiers vs 3 turrets and a fucking tank right off the start is just pure bullshit.
so mechanical man was a parody XD!
I just peed a little
Weird way to end a video.
Postmortem is sadly a bit too appropriate here. EA literally killed C&C with the final blow of mobile gaming.
Except C&C hd remaster is happening. So yeah, let the good old times roll.
@@Lowlightt can't wait for the shoed-in microtransactions!
@@blacxthornE part of the contract with petalgryph studios is no microtransactions and no. Loot boxes or skinshops.
How bout that remaster, bois?
Skip the first four minutes
koalabrownie If you suck, sure.
Ok I'm skipping through this video and I see a lot of people's heads and not enough screenshots of game-related material. What the hell is this? Some big butt kissing postmortem?
I loved and still love C&C, but this presentation is total crap. Way too many "presenters". No clear direction, just random blah blah from many people. Too bad :-(
51:50 sure aged poorly, kek
Aw yeah, this is going to be good! :D
