Hi Eliot, FunKey S creators here, great video as usual. If the creators see this comment, kudos to them, we do not blame people for using our OS or hardware, on the contrary, we encourage it. The whole point of being open source and open hardware is for other people to benefit from our work and create new things with it (the powkiddy Q36 or the Anbenic Nano are great examples of this). So well done guys, you made a great product and a lot of work must have gone into it, especially since it's handmade.
"Here's an unmoded GBA..." Shows a monstrosity that I have never seen before that makes me question if I woke up in a different dimension... It seems that YOU are the one from a different dimension, thought you might like to know.
@@traviswreynolds that happened to me TWICE this week! Do you know how bored i am of the forest of damned souls? Passing every damn time just for a potion. Why can't the merchants sell it?!

9:55 The Allwinner V3s is a fascinating SoC. Most SoCs require ram, but there are some SoCs like this one that also has the ram in the package like a microcontroller, but they have an mmu and everything required to run an os like linux. The Allwinner V3s cost alround 5 dollar on LCSC.
This just gave me the idea of using the PCB of the Gameboy Micro and putting it in a mini version of the original GBA shell. It might be the sweet spot between this and original GBA in size.
Yeah I was pretty confused. Not that familiar with the game boy advance so even though something looked strange I wasn't sure what it was. 😂 Looked for the video about it but couldn't find it until I found a link to his main channel.
The Allwinner V3s processor is visibly hand soldered. This seems a little silly, since you can just use assembly service, but it just indicates what sort of a small manufacturing operation it is. The LCD is an off the shelf unit, same as initially considered by Funkey according to documentation. However eventually Funkey had to order semi custom LCDs with a different flatflex which is way way longer and snakes off more to the side, so it can be rolled up in the hinge. As such the rest are also off the shelf parts. So by all reason it's a clone, not a device made from Funkeys taken apart, or they would have kept the LCD. The Funkey contains absolutely zero custom in-built firmware. The first stage bootloader is standard in this processor, which just goes through bootable ports in order, and the only thing connected to one of these ports is the SD-Card which contains the second stage bootloader and the operating system.
I like that you've been doing more videos like this on your second channel. I enjoy content on both channels, of course. I may not comment on every video, but I do watch them all. 😀👍💯
Cool of FunKey to encourage this. That said, even if they didn't, I still see no issue with this. Even if these people are buying retail FunKey Ss and modding them by hand without telling FunKey, FunKey is still getting those donor console sales. They're still getting paid! I genuinely see no ethical issue with these sorts of mods even if the brand never verbally encouraged it.
Hi Elliot, I messaged you earlier on eBay about possibly signing a Gameboy if I bought one from you for my Dad who's a massive fan of yours. He's a a real difficult few years with his health and him having a sign piece in his Gameboy collection from you would make his year. He doesn't know I'm contacting you. But it’s because of you that he started to fix up and collect Gameboys again and he now has over 50! Thanks for your time. Keep up the amazing videos. Kobe.
The Nano Game Boy was gorgeous, this one is delicious. I have an original FunkeyS and it's a very delightful novelty. This form factor though is very alluring. The Funkey OS is very good, and after having had a look inside, I might just consider a purchase on this little fella. Good find. Also; I saw the screen tear.
If only someone could make a wider version of the unmodded GBA. Or a taller version. I like my Gameboys to be useable as a cricket bat or a small picnick table.
Funny note: the funkey OS this thing has is def modified, funkey OS is made to render on a 1:1 screen and this seems to have some sort of 3:2 screen meaning they did modified the kernel a bit in order for this to render properly on the 3:2 screen. However it is funny that it says funkey S on boot XD
I have NEVER seen a GBA Advance like that before. It’s so wide! I’ve looked online and can’t find any pictures or information or anything! Am I missing something here?
Dude I wish you would make a dedicated video about using the UI of the mini gameboy, as well as this GBA. I wonder if save states are available in that chinese UI, but we just don't know it's there. Really, we need someone from the other side of the great firewall to pull back the curtain on this-
The FunkeyS is OpenHardware though, so legally they can even make an identical copy as long as they don't call it a FunkeyS. For example the RG Nano is just a FunkeyS in a metal shell.
I had a Funkey S, two of them in fact, was super excited to fund the kickstarter but I was disappointed in the end as I had to find the bios files to run certain emulators on roms, the shell would click on the edges when I’d press the buttons, and the battery life was extremely small. I cannot recommend the Funkey S for PlayStation 1 emulation. It’s really designed for quick play and go or just a novelty. I’d rather play on the original Gameboy micro for GBA.
Hey Elliot, would you be interested to make a video about RetroAchievement? Its a plattform where people can experience retrogames with achievements, where you can really earn them by people who digged up the memory Just a video idea because the community and the handling is very cool and introducing it to more people is always nice!
If you like the horizontal form factor on a micro console, but without the suspicious jankiness of it apparently being a modded console in the shape of another console. There's the TrimUI Smart. I'm thinking it should be the same size as this, also two buttons + shoulders + dpad. Screen in 4:3 tho, for better or worse.
I already have the RG Nano for “tiny gameboy purposes” (read: it’s great for pokemon and shiny hunting), but now I am really itching for this tiny GBA. The RG Nano is obviously better on the eyes (not by much, haha). But this scratches that Tamagotchi collector in me so hard and the need for itty bitty tech.
So this new gba mini is really powerful, right? Oooh la la, I want one for myself one of these days! How much does it cost? Does it emulate nes/snes/n64, master system/gamegear/genesis/saturn, Turbografx-16/Supergrafx/CD, 3DO, Atari jaguar/Lynx, gameboy/color/advance, Neogeo pocket/color, ps1, dreamcast, and ps2, gamecube, right? Is the lcd comfortable to read and play?
That's weird that you have to go into the menus and change it to the proper aspect ratio rather than using L&R like you would on an original Game Boy advanced. Lol
Despite being advertised as GBA, does this device come with all of the games that would come on a standard funkeys or would i have to add the games myself?
Hello everyone, I have the ambernic rg nano aqua color and I'm in love with it. I play it everyday and the size is just adorable and it came with a case usb c cable and honestly it was only $75 on Amazon. It's also preloaded with over 5,000 games if anyone is interested in mini gameboys. I'm a collector and a fan of the mini electronic gameboys and plan on purchasing the funky s, gameboy advance mini and gameboy mini soon. Thanks for this video, I love this ❤
What the hell is that purple knockoff you're trying to pass off as a game boy advance at the beginning of the video? It takes literally 2 seconds on Google to see that you're comparing apples to bananas
