Thank you for so expertly putting this pedal through its paces! I'm honestly flattered that someone can talk about this thing for as long (and in as much depth) as you did!
Thank you for reminding me how much this pedal rules-been too long since I plugged it in and I did so immediately after the intro lol. Every EAE pedal deserves a feature film.
Haha I saw this comment last night and forgot to respond because I got caught up rewatching your video on this... again. You've got THE definitive longsword demo on youtube.
I think the thing i like the most about your channel is how chill u are, but at the same time, through your calm demeanor, u can see the sheer passion u have for the pedals u demonstrate. I really enjoy the detail and lengths u go to explain these pedals and what makes u enjoy them so much within your own workflow, plus i like your playing style.
I've been waiting for you to make this video for a while now. This is my desert island pedal. I haven't had a board without it in over a year. I can't agree more with "the sound in my head of distortion," or however you put it. Impeccable taste Mark!
The Black Hole Symmetry, now the Longsword, keep doing pedals I already have! Both videos excellent and have given me newfound appreciation of how good they are and how to get the best out of them, thanks Mark
Fantastic demo!! One of the most dynamic and powerful distortions I've ever played- EAE slays it!! I do like the independent boost on the Limelight - my favorite pedal. However, I think the boost on the Longsword works well with such a thicker gain structure.
Incredible! Think I may need to explore eae after watching both the model fet and this video. Curious how your setting the dream and ruby…so much clarity in the dirt sound! Thanks again🙏
Killer tones, might be my favorite intro track of yours as well! Also, thanks for not including the Stella in this video, every time I hear it in your videos I spend a solid hour debating selling off my gear to grab one! The Melody Queen might be starting to give me the same feelings though😂
Fantastic dive into a pedal. Thanks for the in depth breakdown. Really helps in assessing what I am looking for in my own search. I concur about the distortion pedals vs drive. I am leaning more and more into distortion style break up.
@@markjohnstonofficial hey Mark, have you made a video on the EAE Halberd? I have not played with it but I imagine the Longsword is more versatile-complete guess-but are the sound possibilities so different? I have had it on my wish list for a long time but that’s probably because I’m a touch compulsive. Anyway, I love your channel and the quality of information you provide.
Mmm I really like the longsword but for something as versatile as it, it would really go a long way being MIDI programable to leverage its possibilities. EAE wouldn't make a custom longsword MIDI would they? Does anybody have any recs on MIDI controllable distortion pedals (but don't only cover overdrive)? Not sure about CBA Brothers or Strymon Riverside.
That intro track was killer man! Not sure if I missed if you mentioned or not but what settings were you using for the chuggy rhythm part? So good. I recently picked up the Limelight and I am in LOVE with it. I was actually thinking I now need a distortion pedal to take my Badger into more saturation than what the Limelight does. Looks like this could be it!
Hi. I just wanna say your pedal reviews are very in depth and informative. I am looking for a distortion pedal and I am torn between this and the 1981 drv. The longsword looks more tweakable with all that EQ options but I was thinking if the 1981 drv can also achieve this since I have an EQ pedal on my board. If you choose between the two what will you choose? Just wanna know your input thanks
I watched your demo, among others, for the Halberd, and I think the Halberd is more what I’m looking for. It sounds a bit fuzzier, and more dynamic. Would you say that’s a fair assessment?
How would you compare between this or the drv? I'm a simple person and the idea of a couple distortion pedals seems like a bit too much. They seem to have their own flavor and place, but loving this guy a lot
@@markjohnstonofficial sweet! I bought the Mode FET and the Longsword, and they are both awesome! From what I understand, the dagger is a condensed version of the Longsword, so I think we are good. 😁👍
Yeah Ive got a full video on it here on the channel. I really dig it, totally different beast than the longsword. I would consider the FET to be more of a bedrock preamp where I would use it in stacking whereas this can be the standalone drive.
@@markjohnstonofficial it’s so good. Now it gets tough though. Don’t want to take off my Benson Pre, Plasma Pedal, or Wave Cannon MkII… gotta see if I can make room
@Mark Johnston it does a thing for sure. It's probably the dirt pedal I use more than any other for the low gain preamp thing. Tons of character. I miss it any time it's not on the board. Also, the high gain side with humbuckers is rowdy but cleans up so good. It's a killer circuit, for sure.
There is certainly nothing special about that distortion. Your guitar, your recording equipment and your specific settings give it a nice sound, but that distortion is just plain. 1950s analogue technology at 300 usd a box. Digital distortion is harsh and 2 dimensional , but can sound great through headphones over the net and for 50 bucks you can get it in a multi FX pedal- great value. Analogue is a little more 3 dimensional and has signal boosting properties to go with it with its OP-AMP circuitry so is mildly better, especially in real life and can be used in conjuction with digital as a pre-amp of sorts but can still sound harsh when the gain goes too high and the pedal shouldn't cost you more than 50-100 USD in a large metal box with lots of knobs. Tube distortions are the smoothest and most expensive. Not necessarily better, obviously value for money goes down, but the most 3d sound, best harmonics and feel IRL and the gain can never be too much, even over majorly oversaturated it still sounds smooth. Versatility goes down and so does value for money, but tube is the best there is. This thing ain't even tube, lol. Go get a blackstar HT tube based distortion pedal. That is all there is to this technology. Everything else is just marketing.
Thank you for so expertly putting this pedal through its paces! I'm honestly flattered that someone can talk about this thing for as long (and in as much depth) as you did!
Please tell me you guys are working on a “Limelight V3!”
I’m new to the pedal world, but this is one I’m gonna have to have in my collection! Beautiful work
Ordered mine. You guys make the best dirt pedals that I’ve ever tried.

Versatile well voiced distortion is one the hardest things to pull off and the Longsword does it in spades.

My all time favourite drive pedal, now I can stop commenting on your vids that you have to try one haha!
We finally got there and I’m lame for having taken this long. The longsword is, hands down, a top 5 drive for me of all time.

Cool pedal. Very flexible. Quite the deep dive demo, well done.

That MQ looks so light. The body shape is just so graceful.
That’s absolutely nothing about that guitar I don’t love
I only have the EAE Longsword and Model Fet. They are both so very good and genuinely among my favourites. EAE is super good.
John is possibly the best drive pedal designer in the industry right now.
@@markjohnstonofficial hear, hear! Scooped up the Halberd (quite irresponsibly) about 4 days after getting a Longsword. No ragrets.

UNREAL demo once again!

I’m not sure I said it explicitly anywhere but the breakdown is largely the silicon clipping mode
cool guitars

I think the 1981 is just a (very nice) Rat. So I feel this is more special, unless the Rat sound is what you're after

Very generally speaking, I would say the DRV is more chimey and compressed sounding whereas the Longsword is more open and beefy.
