  • When To Use An ANTIDEPRESSANT for HOT FLASHES at menopause// Were you prescribed an antidepressant for menopausal symptoms like hot flashes or night sweats? This can be a common scenario for many women, and may be confusing as to if this is the right treatment for them. In this weeks video, I will break down the three times when I find that "antidepressants" are a good option for women suffering with menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. I also discuss how these medications work for menopausal symptoms in this week's video.

I recently went to my doctor last week to prescribe me something for these horrible night sweats!! I had a hysterectomy last year so I’m just now going into menopause at 55. I have high blood pressure so my doctor recommended biofluxitine I believe, I know I use to take 5mg of fluoxetine in 2011 for anxiety but I wiened myself off, was able to manage my anxiety.
so when she mentioned 36mg of bio I went along with it but that sounded abit too high and I have not picked up the prescription?????
I cannot afford to be highly sedated since I work in a school with over-active children, I must be fully alert and fast moving throughout the day.
I was taking estroven for months then it all of a sudden stopped working although i took it regularly.
To be honest, I've become so desperate that now i'm self-medicating by taking one zyrtec a day because I’ve read it’s proven to reduce hotflashes by 40% if taken daily over a few weeks. so far it’s been a month and the Zyrtec has worked, I’m not on fire as much as before especially since I pop one at night. with high blood pressure I don’t know if this is safe to take long term but at this point I’m just mentally drained and desperate for relief and it’s working.
It could possibly affect my heart but for all women going through this we become desperate for relief at all cost.
the Zyrtec does not cause me to sweat profusely during the day either. I just believe hot flashes & nights sweats should be classified as a disability because it truly is….
the slightest change in body temperature will set off a hot flash. and forget about your workout routine you’ll instantly heat up with exercising so basically you just gain weight because you are restricted from moving.
Another thing, in a day I go through over 80oz of ice water because I must do what I need to stay cool.

Neorotin and Paxil have worked miracles for my severe hot flashes !! I went from 12-15 A DAY, literally sweat dripping off my whole face, running down my neck ,,, DAY AND NIGHT !!! Embarrassing and made me sick .this made me dizzy & unable to focus , when they came me on so suddenly. This were destroying my daily life , my job , my relationships! I’m SO GRATEFUL FIR THESE MEDICATIONS!! I now get 1-2 once in a while, during stressful situations and intense physical activity

I’ve been on it for 2 weeks now. I was having 2-3 dozen hot flashes a day frequently preceded by little anxiety bouts. Couldn’t sleep at night because I’d go back and forth all night long…hot cold hot cold hot cold. From the first dose (10mg) I had instant relief. Just a handful of very very mild flashing and not anxiety.
In fact after taking Paxil I realized how irritable I had been. There were times I wanted to scream at my husband to shut up and then when he wasn’t talking I’d be sad that he was “ignoring” me. So Paxil hasn’t only been beneficial for me but for my marriage too

Sounds like what I went thru ! Neurotin ( aka Gabapentin) and Paxil STOPPED THEM . Maybe 1-2 once in a while

Really helpful thank you. I went for HRT here in the UK about 4 years ago when my flashes first started. The clinician strongly discouraged HRT because of cancer risk and she prescribed anti depressants. My periods returned and the flashes went away so I didn’t take them. Some time later the flashes returned sporadically but with night sweats too. I went back to the same clinician she again discouraged use of HRT and also said she could only prescribe for 5 years and all the symptoms would then return. I’m still having a period on and off and seeing your video I think I will go back to the doctor and take the anti depressants. Thanks to this doctor (a specialist in women’s health) I’m now quite fearful of taking HRT despite all the excellent advice I hear on UA-cam from you and other clinicians 🙁

I am fervently trying to wean off of Paxil after being on it for 3+years. It’s horrible withdrawals. I’ve spent 6m going from cutting pills in half to fourths and finally going every other day. I get nausea, headaches brain flashes and hot flashes. I’ve decided to go back on estrogen gel and progesterone pills. If I had known the withdrawals were so bad I NEVER would have started it.

I was prescribed venlafaxine 3 months ago. I am 51 and in peri menopause, but I am also on tamoxifen. I tried acupuncture for 3 months that didn’t work for me - also diet changes and exercise was a must. I would say the venlafaxine takes off the “edge” of the hot flashes. Maybe reduces the hot flashes by about 10-20%... better then nothing! Take care ladies !

Dr. Hirsch , my mother had HERr2 positive breast cancer at age 65 that went to her bones 15 years later. Is that a contraindication for me for HRT? Thank you!

  • @victoriafine8209

Dr. Hirsch, I'm adopted and have no medical history other than my own. Started HT earlier this year (well into menopause) but I want to be aware of any negative side effects. So far none. How would one know if their HT is causing any internal problems? Are there early indicators to be mindful of? All good thus far.

Hard to say. Not having bleeding or breast tenderness is a great sign your dose is good!
