  • The Marmalade were one of the most popular bands of the 1960s and 1970s, scoring a host of hits including "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" and "Reflections Of My Life" with original singer Dean Ford. Dean left the band in the early 70s.
    In 2009 broadcaster Hugh Brown spoke with original member Graham Knight and lead singer Sandy Newman at The Minto Hotel, Edinburgh, on 1st August 2009 for a chat. This short programme also features acoustic unplugged versions of two of Marmalade's hits, "Rainbow" and "Lovin' Things".
    Interesting facts - Marmalade were the first ever Scottish band to top the British charts! Former member, Junior Campbell, went on to do the music for Thomas the Tank Engine!

    What a lovely interview, Graham was always a great bass player, and it was very interesting to hear how Sandy came to join them. For me though, Marmalade will always be the classic line up featuring Junior, Dean and Alan. Full marks to Sandy for keeping the flame burning, although I think of them now in 2024 as a very good tribute group with no original members.

    I met Graham in 2016 he had a relative in the same nursing home as my mum in Bognor Regis. Lovely man, very warm and friendly. I didn't know who he was until one of the nurses told me a few days later. Shame, as I would love to have talked about 70's music with him!

    Good interview. I loved Dean Ford, but love Sandy Newman. He is still a fabulous frontman for Marmalade. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      AW?...Dean Ford and Junior Campbell made Marmalade and the sound they had was because of them, not Sandy

    People all praise Dean Ford and yes he was a good singer but he left the band, his choice, after only 3 years. Sandy Newman joined as singer, guitarist and keyboardist in 1975 and stayed for over 40 years.

    I know Graham, he was married to my best mate's sister and we met on several occoasions and we just hung out. If you read this Graham I was Mike's mate John, remember coming into my big bedsit with Mike and seeing the picture of the foot! We last had a chat at Tim and Debbie's house when you turned up at some ungodly hour, we cracked couple of beers and had a chat for while. You are looking well mate.

    The Marmalade actually recorded Lovin Things a year before The Grassroots 1969 version so Graham got it a bit wrong!

    • @souldeep69
      @souldeep69 Рік тому

      Correct. Grass Roots member Warren Entner was honeymooning in England in 1969 when he heard Marmalade's "Lovin' Things" on the radio and bought the single to bring back to America, thinking it would be a perfect song for the Grass Roots. Producer Steve Barri agreed and it remains a highlight of the Grass Roots' catalogue.

    The above 2 men are not from The Marmalade group of the 1969 which loved! What happened to them? I'm a great fan since I was a teenager...I knew Dean Ford had passed away but how about the rests in the group? There were 2 guitarists and the drummer! Thank you...Greetings from S'pore!
