It was interesting when a much older Dean Ford rerecorded Reflections of My Life prior to his passing. It was a little sad to see him sing it later in life as if he was living out his life in the song. He did an amazing job with his rerecording. It was as if he was saying goodbye.
I agree totally. It was always a great song, and was very much a case of right song right time with its Vietnam connections; then coming across Dean Ford's rerecording, along with his daughter I recall, is brilliant on yet more levels. Can't help but be moved to your soul. If you haven't listened to it, FIND IT and spend a quiet 5 mins reflecting.
Reading Dean's story, I realized how much success, but also the lack of it, led someone to a not so desired path, which was alcoholism. But, fortunately, before he passed away, people who liked him were able to provide a brief but rich return to showbiz. This way, we can remember and be moved by this great artist. See you one day, Dean Ford. Thank you very much for existing.
This one my favorite bands here are my top 10 Marmalade songs 10 - Lovin' Things 09 - Falling Apart at the Seams 08 - Wait for Me Mary-Anne 07 - Sweet Little Lady 06 - Baby Make It Soon 05 - Rainbow 04 - Back on the Road 03 - Cousin Norman 02 - Reflections of My Life 01 - I See the Rain
At Fort Leonardwood at the PX in 1970 I listened to Dean Ford.. Reflections. I was totally moved by it. A beautiful song that said it all for the times.
I was in Vietnam in 1970 when I first heard Reflections, when I hear this song today it takes me back to 1970. I guess its a anti war song but I never made the connection at the time.
I was brought up living next to these guys when they started. I still remember their Ford transit van with the Marmalade logo parked in Lethamhill Road. I was a few years younger than them but still remember Junior Cambell playing acoustic left handed and giving me some of my first guitar lessons.
Pat the bass player was a friend of mine and opened a pub called SCOTLAND YARD in the valley. I used to deliver beer to him and he was a sweetheart ! I got to play paint ball with him and ALAN WHITE, and he was super cool too !
What they should have done is go on a tour with the band BREAD. The BREAD and MARMALADE tour would have been a massive success!! They would have been the TOAST of the music world!😂🤣😅😂🤣
I got best of marmalade in 1970.. before I heard reflections! It is one fantastic record! I started trying to collect them!! Every lp I have I love !! Great overlooked band!! Still a favorite on our turntable! God bless this band
Reflections of some memories, the future and the past. Of times to come, of things I;ve done the first things and the last....You know how oft I wonder what some people really mean. With eyes and ears, and thoughts and tears, of loved ones and a dream. I wonder what tomorrow brings, will our love still be true? But through the years I'll hide my fears and keep on loving you! Reflections of some memories, some make me cry they do. Will the future bring this song I sing, this song called "loving you" ? I wrote that 50 years ago in 1974 not ever hearing of Marmalade. Thank you Tim, my brother for putting these lyrics to a wonderful melody. Those were good times. And now the reflections of my life... some make me cry they do........
Reflections of my life is my favorite song of all genre and im Black American born and raised in Miami. I wish could have met them i think. I don't know if they were racist or what but thru their music i believe they were good men. I could be wrong but i pray not.
Not mentioned is the influence of Scottish Radio 1 DJ Stuart Henry, who gave them a lot of airtime on what was, at the time, the only real popular music station in the UK.
Imagine if the Beach Boys, in say--1971--decided they were going to exclusively play their newer progressive songs live, and refused to play "Fun, Fun. Fun". I think they, too, were contemplating doing the same thing Marmalade did at the time.
I always thought that Marmalade were a bloody good group and produced good songs. I especially liked the song that Junior Campbell released called Hallelujah Freedom back in the early 1970's.
Reading Dean's story, I realized how much success, but also the lack of it, led someone to a not so desired path, which was alcoholism. But, fortunately, before he passed away, people who liked him were able to provide a brief but rich return to showbiz. This way, we can remember and be moved by this great artist. I know Graham, the bass player, he married my best mate's sister. I enjoyed some good times with Graham, a really lovely bloke. We never talked much about music, we mostly met at family things, his wife was one of 12 kids so we met quite few times.
When the narrator mentioned that the lads had called themselves The Gaylord’s… I had a snorting coffee moment down my nose and all over my t shirt ….. it’s been 15 mins since then and I’m still pissing myself laughing … you couldn’t make that up , I’m aware that word became a kinda insult in later years and is now frowned upon and I’d never use it these days … but it doesn’t mean it’s not still funny as fk 😅 👍🏴
I'm not sure if you knew, but Junior Campbell (as far as I know)composed the music for Thomas The Tank Engine when Ringo Starr was narrating it.Marmalade's music was very enjoyable.
Hugh Nicholson still recording and writing ,sadly his good friend Dean Ford died. A couple of years ago in America .Reflections of my life is one the best songs of the seventies. This video suggests that Hugh and Dean fell out not so they remained friends until Deans death
Their best album by far was released in 1971 called “Songs”. It’s a really mature singer/songwriter type album, definitely not like their early stuff. Worth checking out.
To the comment below by Jose... What are you on about? This is about a band called "The Marmalade". Listen / watch the video and try to appreciate one of the greatest bands from my teen years. Please try to retract your inappropriate racist comment. You are clearly at the wrong party.
Nice overview. Thanks. The lineup changes were a touch hard for me to follow. Therefore am curious if anyone knows: who was in the band during the summer of 73. I saw them play in either July or August at the Marquee. Junior Campbell had a single in the charts at the time (Sweet Illusion) but I seem to remember both he and Dean Ford in the lineup. Does anyone know for sure?
Had a can of beer with Dean Ford on the grassy slope at the top of Wembley way 75' I think it was . He was looking for a ticket. I was not much of a music person but we just talked in general and said our goodbyes.
One of the first bands to use backing tracks at their live shows when this practice was not acceptable ( early 1980's ) . My local newspaper headlined their gig after their performance at the time as '' The Mimalade '
Marmalade was a good band but a lot of it is luck and it seems they didn’t get a lot of it it’s how to sell the band to it’s a pitty they were a very good band bless them
When it comes to so-called "one hit wonders", I've always said--:listen to the rest of their stuff". You may be quite surprised that the other stuff is even better than the one hit!
First saw them in Easterhouse ymca mid 1960s they were called the countdowns then changed it dean ford & the gaylords first group I seen playing live. Hard to believe it’s almost sixty years ago and I’ve reached 75 yrs. what happened to singing with roger daltrey about dying before we got old😂
I had no idea who this was so I checked out a video. I discovered 2 things: 1. All this time I thought it was the Bee Gees. 2. The blackface boy on the drumset really did not age well.
"Reflections Of My Life" is without doubt in my opinion one of the greatest pops songs ever written.
Reflections is the most beautiful song ever its reflects my life ,love it xxx

I love this version with his daughter

"Reflections of My Life" was VERY popular in Southeast Asia among US troops when it came out.
At Fort Leonardwood at the PX in 1970 I listened to Dean Ford.. Reflections. I was totally moved by it. A beautiful song that said it all for the times.

Okayyyy lol! You are still taking the meds yeah? lol 😂
They could later have supported The Jam 🤣🤣
Fun Fact
There is actually a Bread tribute band called Toast.
I got best of marmalade in 1970.. before I heard reflections! It is one fantastic record! I started trying to collect them!! Every lp I have I love !! Great overlooked band!! Still a favorite on our turntable! God bless this band
Rock on!
Reflections ....... , only got to number 3 , but if a record ever deserved a 5/6 week run at Number 1 its definitely that one.
Reflections of some memories, the future and the past. Of times to come, of things I;ve done the first things and the last....You know how oft I wonder what some people really mean. I can assure you, they absolutely were not racist.
they are from glasgow racsist is not in our DNA
I’m Glaswegian
And so where they
Never rascist

And most amazingly they morphed into the kinks at 4:45 😂
Love Reflections..... will be part of my funeral when that time comes.
Junior Campbell had a solo hit with the song Hallelujah Freedom and went on to compose and record tv music.
And Sweet Illusion.
I always thought that Marmalade were a bloody good group and produced good songs. I especially liked the song that Junior Campbell released called Hallelujah Freedom back in the early 1970's.

Weird no mention of Cousin Norman, which was a UK No 6 .
When the narrator mentioned that the lads had called themselves The Gaylord’s… I had a snorting coffee moment down my nose and all over my t shirt ….. it’s been 15 mins since then and I’m still pissing myself laughing … you couldn’t make that up , I’m aware that word became a kinda insult in later years and is now frowned upon and I’d never use it these days … but it doesn’t mean it’s not still funny as fk 😅

Marc Almond has just covered Reflections on my life on his new album out 12 July on BMG. A short clip was released today
Oh lord, I hope he hasn't ruined it...
Picture of The Kinks at 4:40?

Wish editors of these type of 60s groups. Would check the photos they use. Showing pictures of Marmalade that aren't them
I know, I was waiting to see what the Kinks had to do with them.
@@paulhagen5645 copyright problems, I would guess!
Silly name but there's no doubt they made some class tracks back in the day.
I've always been told that in the early days, they used to come around to our house in Barlanark, so that my father could tune their guitars.
Ok,they had that one song.Oh ,but what a great, great, great song it is.
Why did you show a picture of The Kinks at 4.41?
Nice overview. Thanks. The lineup changes were a touch hard for me to follow. Therefore am curious if anyone knows: who was in the band during the summer of 73. Good question!
@@whathappenedtothem_ bad answer...........................
Não era mais o Dean Ford . Era o impostor . Dean saiu em 1971 e nunca mais pertenceu a banda nenhuma .
BREATHE IN ‘ then talk ‘ then remember to breathe again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Marmalade just wasn't the same without Dean Ford.
why was there a picture of the kinks in this?
Why is there a photo of the Kinks at the 4:42 mark? 🤔
Had a can of beer with Dean Ford on the grassy slope at the top of Wembley way 75' I think it was . He was looking for a ticket. I was not much of a music person but we just talked in general and said our goodbyes.
Reflections of my life did not top the British charts. It's highest position was number Two.
Why was The Kinks included in the photos?
Why is there a picture of The Kinks. How hard is it to get that right? 😂
Good spot Colin
@@oscarpistoffalot2076 Cheers Oscar. 😀
around 4:42

I See the Rain , top ten of the best singles ever , Flower 🌹🌹 Pop , did I play this a hundred times and more !?
They don't look like the old Marmalade members at all! 😂
GayLords? LOL Different meaning then though.
Once Robertsons took the golly's off I stopped eating it .
I still have a Golly badge.
There are lots of rumours about marmalade but I won't spread it about
You showed The Kinks. Why?
Marmalade was a good band but a lot of it is luck and it seems they didn’t get a lot of it it’s how to sell the band to it’s a pitty they were a very good band bless them
Fascinating I thought they were just a one hit wonder
When it comes to so-called "one hit wonders", I've always said--:listen to the rest of their stuff". You may be quite surprised that the other stuff is even better than the one hit!
Yeah, the turning down of the Three Dog Night tour was a huge mistake.
6:23 is a picture of the band BLUE, formed by Hugh Nicholson, whose debut album is a harmony pop classic in the style of Badfinger.
I remember Junior Campbell at school (Eastbank Academy) in the 1960's. He was one of the "Big Boys" who had so much class.
Junior Campbell lived across the road from me in Springboig. I also went to Eastbank Academy in the 60's.
First saw them in Easterhouse ymca mid 1960s they were called the countdowns then changed it dean ford & the gaylords first group I seen playing live. Hard to believe it’s almost sixty years ago and I’ve reached 75 yrs. what happened to singing with roger daltrey about dying before we got old😂
They got into a real jam.😅😅
Yes a sticky situation
🤣
They must have got in a jam
Got caught up in the jam. Rock music was a very sticky situation.
Marmalade was never the same when it was deemed that Golllies were racist.
What you talking bout Willis ? 🤷
What happ have happened to Marmalade ? They have turned themselves into Jam.
MC 5 came along and kicked out the jams.
It went on my toast this morning.
You beat me to the punch. Damn!
Can you imagine 3Dog night and marmalade playing together?
There mgr seems to have not wanted them to make it or was pure dumb.
They became the jam
Falling apart at the seams was a hit early 1976 not 77 .
Whos the member at 9:55 of the video i think he was a lead singer?
The bald guy left is Sandy Newman. He is leadsinger and leadguitarrist of Marmelade.
Was wondering how Dean Ford had transformed into that guy.
No mention of my little one good song i loved
it when it came out in the early 70ts good lyrics 😊
Did they do that song featured in Animal House "I gave my love a cherry"/
I love that scene 😂
They turned into jelly
But were good they had a good hit
Hilarious. Not
When they tried to cover too many styles of music they spread themselves too thin.
Whats with the picture of the KINKS??
That's what I thought!
Correction they formed a group not a band, Americans call groups bands and for some unknown reason they are called bands in England now
The word "band" has been used in England for a loooooong time. It's good that you finally caught up though.👍
I dunno - but who is that in the photo?? Not The Marmalade anyway. 🙄
You breathe into the mike when speaking sounds like a lot of air puffs
They were stuffed when Paul Weller formed The Jam
What are the Kinks doing at 4.45? lol
They're toast now. It's a pithy, kind of bittersweet. Never rind though.
04:40 that is a pic of The Kinks!
Marmalade got spread 😆
They ended up jamming
I used to live about 10 houses down from Pat Fairley when I was a teenager in the mid 70's.
He gave me an album once - Yes's Tomato.
It went bad..
...and I threw it out.
They got spread on a piece of toast.
Marmalade? They turned sour.
"People just don't buy it anymore"?
Reflections of my life did not get to number one in the uk .
The Gaylords 😂
They got into a jam and couldnt be preserved
They get spread?
Was Pete Cummins a manager of marmalade.
what a load of nonsense..the new album was still using my drum tracks..Once Junior left the band imploded
Mr. Whitehead. I don't think anyone in here realized you were the drummer for Marmalade. Congrats sir! great group, great songs.
Omg I just got it! Marmalade was spread too thin! Lol
Why a photo of the Hollies
I had no idea who this was so I checked out a video. I discovered 2 things: 1. All this time I thought it was the Bee Gees. 2. The blackface boy on the drumset really did not age well.
I was always a Jam fan myself 😮
Trigger's broom!!
They teamed up with Martha and the muffins, and were jamming 😁
I bet you can't say, purple burglar alarm 🏴✌️
Q - How do you spell Marmalade ?
A - J.A.M.
